a 5K
BY CATHY MOLITORISFor more than 20 years, Jerry Cole has dedicated his time to supporting the mission and programming of GEARS in Elizabethtown. To honor his contributions to the organization, a tree was planted in front of the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St. Current
BY CATHY MOLITORISYou might think of taking Mom out for brunch to celebrate Mother’s Day, but the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown has a different way to show your love. The ninth annual Mother’s Day Run/Walk will be held on Sunday, May 12, at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown.
Packet pickup and raceday registration will open at 1:30 p.m., and the race will step off at 3 p.m. The race will begin at the Veterans Grove. Once on the Masonic Village property, race participants should follow signs for parking.
People are encouraged to walk or run with their mom, participate in honor of their mother or compete to take home a trophy to present to their mom. “We just want to celebrate moms on their special day,” said Dan Brill, race co-chair. “We try really hard to stay on a strict timeframe, so people still have plenty of time for dinner
with Mom. We’re usually done no later than 4:15.”
Prizes will be awarded for the top overall male and female finishers as well as the top three male and female finishers in seven age brackets: age 14 and under, ages 15 to 19, ages 20 to 29, ages 30 to 39, ages 40 to 49, ages 50 to 59 and age 60 and older. All mothers will receive a flower in honor of Mother’s Day.
“We just want to celebrate moms on their special day.”
“We also have some great door prizes to give out in addition to our awards,” Brill noted,
adding that the event will feature music and snacks as well.
Race T-shirts will be available while supplies last. “We want to give a huge thank you to our generous business sponsors who are listed on our shirts,” he said.
“And one to mention is Masonic
Village for the use of their beautiful grounds.” The 5K course will trace a loop through the picturesque retirement community property.
Even though it’s a timed race, the event features a casual, fun atmosphere, Brill said. Walkers are encouraged to participate, and the event is perfect for people of all ages.
Proceeds from the race will be used for various projects of the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown. With a motto of “Service Above Self,” the group supports a variety of community organizations and efforts throughout northwestern Lancaster County, including projects to benefit students in the Elizabethtown Area School District and GEARS. The club will mark its 100th anniversary in 2025. The service organization holds other major fundraisers throughout the year, including the Taste of Western Lancaster County with Elizabethtown Public Library, so the race event is mostly just an opportunity for community members to

“Smile and wave” with the Donegal Alumni Band
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen Glen Leib formed the Donegal Alumni Band in 2004, he had a dream. The longtime Donegal High School band director wanted to gather 100 people to participate with the group in a Memorial Day parade.
After Leib’s death last July, members of the group are working in earnest to make his wish come true.

The Donegal Alumni Band is looking for members - and you don’t have to be a Donegal grad to join. Anyone is welcome, especially people who live in the Donegal area or are connected to Donegal alumni.
The band formed 20 years ago during the 50th anniversary of Donegal High School, said Jason Spickler, who is a member of the band steering committee.
“Before that, alumni were invited to participate with the high school band at football games and various things like that, but the Donegal Alumni Band formed to be more of a parade band for Memorial Day events and other special events,” he said.
Joining the alumni band was a no-brainer for the current members, said Sharon Boyer, who is also on the steering committee and who enjoyed playing in the band in high school.
“It was always a whole lot of fun. I loved the camaraderie with everyone,” she said, noting that Leib was a persuasive influence. “Anything Mr. Leib wanted you to do, I would do it.”
Stan Tucker, a former drum major and current band member, agreed, adding, “Mr. Leib was one of those guys who was just energetic all the time, and his energy was contagious.”
FRESH MEAT DEPARTMENT
Currently, the Donegal Alumni Band has about 50 active members. The group performs with small ensembles at events such as Winterfest in Mount Joy and has played in the Manheim Memorial Day Parade.
This year, the group will participate in the Mount Joy Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 25; the Marietta Memorial Day Parade in the morning on Monday, May 27; and the Maytown Memorial Day Parade in the afternoon on May 27.

celebrate the 50th Elizabethtown Fair. The Elizabethtown Fair relies on community support for the barbecue, not just from the people who purchase a meal. The chicken for the barbecue will be donated by Wenger Feeds and prepared by Harvey’s Main Street BBQ. Herr’s will provide potato chips, and Pepperidge Farm will donate the rolls. Swiss Premium Dairy will supply discounted drinks. Mars Wrigley will contribute the desserts, and Charles & Alice will donate the applesauce.
“This is the only fundraiser to benefit the fair,” said Sally Nolt, fair secretary. “The fair committee is very thankful for the support of the community and the sponsors.”
Advance tickets for the chicken barbecue may be purchased from Elizabethtown Fair members and friends or by calling 717-808-1397. Tickets may also be purchased at the following Elizabethtown locations: Brandt’s Farm Supply, 601 E. High St.; Groff’s Meats, 33 N. Market St.; and B&G Lumber, 212 W. High St. There is a discount for purchasing tickets in advance, but advance purchase is not required.
The 51st annual Elizabethtown Fair will run from Monday, Aug. 19, through Saturday, Aug. 24. A tentative premium book and schedule can be found at https://etownfair.com.

integral role in starting GEARS in 2000,” said David Wendel, executive director of GEARS. “Jerry served as the chairman of the GEARS board and helped lead the organization through some difficult times, most notably the pandemic. Jerry could always be relied upon to volunteer his time outside of his duties as board chairman, especially with programs that targeted children and seniors.”
Cole said volunteering has always been important to him. “I have a strong passion for
recreation and its importance in our community,” he shared. “Being able to give back to my community as a member of the GEARS board was so important because recreation impacts all members of our community, from children to seniors. The benefits are endless.”
Cole, who lives in Mount Joy Township, served as a Mount Joy Township supervisor for 30 years. “I helped start three park projects in Mount Joy Township, so I understand the value of recreation,” he said.
Volunteers like Cole play a critical role in supporting the operations and management of GEARS, Wendel commented. “In addition, they act as ambassadors by promoting the programs and events provided by GEARS in our community,” he said.
GEARS is a regional provider of recreation and community services in Elizabethtown Borough, East Donegal Township, West Donegal Township and Mount Joy Township. It serves more than 40,000 people with recreation activities and events, licensed child care services and senior center programs.

rehearsal for anyone who can attend on Thursday, May 23, but attendance is not required to participate in the parades.
Rounding out the steering committee of the Donegal Alumni Band are Steve Hassinger, Shawn Kreiner, Jackie Wein Roberts and Debbie Painter, Leib’s daughter.
Tucker noted that the band is looking for band front members as well, and he emphasized that there is room for everyone in the band.
“There are people I run into who say, ‚ÄòI can’t play anymore,’” he said. “And we say, ‚ÄòThat’s OK. Just come along and walk with us. Just join us.’” The group will also have a truck or trailer to transport people who want to participate with the band
but aren’t physically able to march, and the group has instruments for players to borrow if needed.
Uniforms of hats and T-shirts are provided, and the shirts display a message that has special meaning for the band members.
“The back of the shirt says, ‘Smile and Wave,’ and that is our theme,” Tucker explained. “It came from one of the first times we played in a parade, and to say the spectators were a little hostile is an understatement. And Glen, in his wisdom, he said, ‘You want to be courteous always. Just smile and wave.’”
