Succeeding at STEM

Students from the Bear Creek School in the Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD) demonstrated their science prowess at the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 Elementary STEM Bowl Competition held earlier this spring. The Quizly Bear Avengers, comprising Aryanna Funk, Jackson Nash, Marci Steele and Isabelle Williams, took first place in a dramatic showdown, while the Quizly Bears Squared - Jack Auker-Ender, Rory Lesher, Jacob Hirst and Spencer Schickling - earned fourth place.

The competition featured a quiz bowl format, with teams scoring points for answering STEM-related questions correctly through six rounds. “The top two teams with the highest points after the six rounds play a ... finals match to determine first place

and second place, which takes place in front of all the teams, participants, coaches and staff,” said Eric Balak, Avengers coach.

The Avengers faced the L-S STEM Stars in the final round, and they triumphed, despite

having faced a setback against the team in the preliminary rounds, where they lost 195 to 55. It was particularly sweet to win against that team, Balak said, because the team wanted to avenge last year’s defeat to L-S.

He noted that the Avengers started strong and seemed to

be getting stronger before they faced the L-S team and encountered their first challenge. After that loss, the team regrouped and Balak provided words of encouragement.

“I informed the team that I was happy they lost and encountered that feeling of falling behind. I also informed them that they need to be like the goldfish,” Balak said, noting that he had learned from watching the television series “Ted Lasso” that a goldfish has a five-second memory. “(They had) to put that last match behind them and focus on their next match.” The last round went back and forth with each team in the lead at some point until it came down to the last question to determine the winner.

“It was a paper-pencil math toss-up question, out of which Jackson Nash was able to buzz in and provide the correct solution

Rolling along to grant wishes

When the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy rolls through town on Sunday, May 12, it will honor a tradition that began 35 years ago with the wish of one child.

“It all began with Wish Kid Matt Strawser,” said Michelle Ruel, director of marketing and communications for Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley. “Matt was

fascinated with big rig trucks, so it was no surprise he wished to ride in a big rig and talk to his sister, Heather, on the CB radio.”

Since 1990, almost 12,000 trucks have driven in the Convoy, and the event has raised more than $9.2 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.

This year’s Convoy will kick off with a carnival beginning at 9 a.m. at the Manheim

Supporting young adult business owners

Being a business owner is hard enough, but being a young business owner has its own unique challenges. With that in mind, the Young Adult Business Collective formed in Elizabethtown to offer resources and support in a collaborative manner.

“This is a group for young adult (age 40 or younger) entrepreneurs who are interested in connecting and collaborating with other like-minded individuals in whatever phase of their business

they may be,” said Nikita Grove, founder of The Wellness Grove, co-founder of the Elizabethtown Farmers Market Co. and one of the founders of the Young Adult Business Collective. “We run the group like a mini mastermind, where folks can share their challenges and successes with others for support, to learn from one another and inspire growth, new connections and ultimately create supportive synergy as the next generation of business owners in our community.”

Grove started the group with

Moore about the Civil War

Author releases new book Narvon resident and author Joel Moore is a stickler for details. When presented with the design for the cover of his latest book, “Real Boys of the Civil War,” Moore noticed issues with the equipment the boys were carrying and with their uniforms. He worked with the designer, Gien Carlo Tan, to correct drums and uniforms until he was happy with the look. “It’s gorgeous,” noted Moore of the cover, which depicts more than a dozen boys in Civil War garb.

said Moore. “(Gwynne responded), That’s not why I’m here,’ and he went in.” Gwynne rescued the flag when the color guard went down, but he lost an arm to cannon fire and suffered a leg wound as well. When Gwynne’s story made the newspapers, he was nominated for the Medal of Honor. That is when administrators in Washington, D.C., discovered the war hero was not enlisted. “They backdated his enlistment to when he first joined, and he got full pay,” noted Moore.

as lookouts, couriers, and supply movers, among other duties. “Williams became a wagoneer at age 7, and he served the entire four years of the war,” relayed Moore, adding, “At age 11, he was a veteran.”

Moore is known for his many works of historical fiction, including “Journey Into Darkness” and “West to Freedom.” “Real Boys of the Civil War was launched at

Moore pointed out that more than 200,000 underaged young men took part in the Civil War. “Real Boys of the Civil War” is Moore’s first work of nonfiction. The book begins with the historiography research paper Moore originally wrote as a student at West Chester University. The book also tells stories of the individual boys who served, and it finishes with photo selections of many of the young soldiers.

Moore, who has been researching and writing about the boys of the war between the states for 20 years, was in communication with professor Jay Hoar, a University of Maine at Farmington retiree, until Hoar’s death in 2023. Moore has permission to use Hoar’s research, and Moore included Hoar’s story of Benjamin Franklin Williams of Georgia in the book. Williams was a member of the home guard - boys as young as 6 years old who served

One of the boys included in the book, Nathaniel McClean Gwynne, was still a civilian when he served, but his valor earned him a Medal of Honor. Moore explained that because Gwynne was too young to enlist, he went off to war as a camp helper. “At the battle of Petersburg, (Va.), the captain reminded the boy that he couldn’t go into battle,”

The Wellness Grove opens in Elizabethtown

The Wellness Grove (TWG), 222 S. Market St., Suite 101A, Elizabethtown, opened its doors to the community on April 5.

Nikita Grove, a registered dietitian and Elizabethtown native, founded the nutrition counseling practice in 2021 while living in Philadelphia. Motivated by Grove’s passion for wellness and her husband’s young adult cancer diagnosis, the couple left the city and moved to Grove’s family farm, planting TWG in its new, permanent location.

TWG supports all individuals with nutrition and lifestyle counseling and has a special focus on disordered eating, chronic

disease management, cancer prevention and more. The practice accepts most major health insurance plans, which often cover the cost of nutrition counseling requiring, little to no out-of-pocket costs for its clients.

Believing in a holistic approach to wellness, the dietitian team at TWG also offers yoga classes and personal training services.

TWG’s mission is to promote health and longevity in its community by helping others nourish their body, mind and planet with a focus on sustainable lifestyle changes in nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress reduction, local food access and social connection.

Grove grew up on her family’s farm in Marietta and graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 2011. She has a Bachelor of Science in dietetics and sports nutrition from Mansfield University and a Master of Science in nutrition education and coun -

effort put forth by small business owners to provide fine quality crafts, as well as other products and services. For the past years, local area crafters and makers have offered handmade crafts, hobby items and decorating items for sale to the nearly 1,000 people who

attend this event annually. In addition, the library is making space available to vendors of other, non-craftrelated businesses that wish to capitalize on the foot traffic and make their presence known in the Elizabethtown area. Applications can be

obtained in person at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, or at www. etownpubliclibrary.org.

For more information, visit or contact the library at 717-367-7467 or information@etownpubliclibrary. org.

Kennel Club posts dog show

Lancaster Kennel Club will hold the 80th annual Red Rose Classic All Breed Dog Show and Rally Trials on Saturday, May 11, at the Lebanon Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon. This event is a family-friendly conformation show.

Breed, best of group, and best of show ring times and locations will be available at www.raudogshows. com/judging-programs/ in early May.

Admission to the show is free. There is a per vehicle

parking fee. Due to safety concerns, strollers are not allowed in the show or grooming areas. In addition, only dogs entered in the show may be on-site.

For more details, visit www.lancasterkennelclub. org or search for “Lancaster Kennel Club” on Facebook.

The major sponsors for

the show are the Lebanon County commissioners’ Hotel Tax Grant Program and Fortitude Canine. Lancaster Kennel Club was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2023 as a Centennial Club for being in existence for more than 100 years, having been founded in 1921.
