Patriotism On Parade BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Ever since she was very little, Lily Hostetter wanted to be a poppy princess in the Bainbridge Memorial Day Parade. It was a dream of her father, Mike, to see his daughter raise money for veterans through selling poppies and then participate in the parade. Mike was killed in a car accident in 2018 when Lily was just 7 years old, but the Bainbridge Elementary School student was determined to fulfill her dad’s wishes. She’ll be one of four poppy kids in this year’s parade, to be held on Monday,
May 30, beginning at 9 a.m. “Lily’s dad had a lot of military friends and friends who were veterans,” said Lily’s mom, Alicia. “She was raised to be very patriotic. When we first moved to Bainbridge in 2013, we saw this poppy competition and Mike thought it was the most amazing thing. He just couldn’t wait for this year to get here. … Lily decided that she wanted to do it still in memory of her father.” Lily has been going door to door in Bainbridge asking for donations and has contacted local businesses as well. Not only does she want to sell the most poppies See Parade pg 5

Serving Up Nostalgia BY CATHY MOLITORIS
here’s an occupational hazard when you park an ice-cream truck in your driveway, as Julie Ramsey and her family recently found out. Everyone who drives by wants to know when they can get some of the frozen treats. The answer is “now.” MAR’s Delights - the letters stand for Mom & Abby Ramsey - is open for business. The ice-cream truck is named for Julie and her daughter, who plan to operate it throughout neighborhoods near their Elizabethtown home as well as into Mount Joy. It’s a family affair for the Ramseys, as dad Greg and brother Matt also help with the business. Owning an ice-cream truck has been a longtime goal for Julie. “This is something I’ve wanted to do for over 20 years,” she said. “The last few years, I started seriously thinking about it, and finally I thought, ‘I’m going to do it.’” She knew just who to recruit for help. “She walked into my room and

Extending A Helping Hand BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When United Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) hosted an open house of the expansion of Community Place on Washington (CPOW) in April, it fulfilled a longtime goal. “For many communities, there is nowhere for people to go for help in difficult times,” said Doug Lamb on behalf of UCEA. “The churches of Elizabethtown have been dreaming of a campus where everyone is welcomed to come find their path forward. Some would say this has been 40 years in See Helping Hand pg 4

weather cooperates throughout the summer, along with participating in special events during the day. At first, Greg was hesitant when his wife proposed the idea of the icecream truck, but he soon got on board. “I had a few sleepless nights, wondering how this was all going to work, but I also came up with my own ideas and I got into it,” he said. One of Greg’s suggestions? Selling a treat he enjoyed as a kid - vanilla and chocolate ice-cream cups complete with wooden spoons. Along with treats for humans, MAR’s Delights will sell Frosty Paws ice-cream treats for dogs. The truck will operate on a cash-only basis. As she prepares to see a longtime dream come true, Julie said she hopes the ice-cream truck will bring smiles to the faces of everyone who encounters it. “I love the nostalgia of an ice-cream truck,” she stated. “Older people remember it from their neighborhoods, and it can be the start of creating new memories for the next generation.” For more information, search for “MAR’s Delights” on Facebook.

said, ‘Do you want to be my business partner?’” recalled Abby, of the conversation she had with her mother a few months ago. “She has wanted to do this for so long, and I thought it would be even more special if I did it with her.” The Ramseys purchased the truck in January and spent the first quarter of the year turning the former tailgating truck into an ice-cream confectionery on wheels. All four Ramseys put in hands-on work on the renovations, and Julie especially credits her brother, Don Stoltz, with being instrumental in the truck’s transformation. Abby created the company’s logo of two icecream treats in a flying saucer. Operating an ice-cream truck required a lot of hands-on learning, from finding the perfect vendors to figuring out how to keep the treats cold when the truck is not in operation. “This is our first shot at being entrepreneurs,” noted Julie, who, along with Abby, has another fulltime day job. MAR’s Delights plans to operate every evening that the

Educational seminars will be held on the porch of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., and admission is included for tour ticket holders. At noon and 2 p.m., Rosemarie Curcio will present “Bats in the Garden.” At 1 and 3 p.m., Carrie Lyn Strong will present “Garden Recipes.” A pulled pork barbecue meal will be served from 11 a.m. until sold out in the Marietta Community House during the tour for an additional charge. Karen Sullivan, one of the tour coordinators, said the tour has been held in Marietta for more than 10 years, after a group of garden enthusiasts revived a tradition started years earlier. “We wanted to have a garden tour again because there are so many nice gardens in Marietta,” she stated. Sullivan noted that she and Baker often discover places to highlight during walks through town in the summer. “We go up and down alleys and we’re always looking,” she said with a laugh. “If something looks like a good option for the tour, we’ll knock on the
Marietta is a community full of creative gardens, and several of them will be on display when the Marietta Garden Tour is held on Sunday, June 5. The self-guided tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature eight stops. Proceeds will benefit the preservation of the Marietta Community House. Highlights of the tour will include a newly placed rock garden on a property whose history can be traced
back as far as the 1760s. Other gardens will feature fountains, raised vegetable beds, heirloom plants, fruit trees and colorful perennials. “One garden on the tour has more than 150 varieties of daylilies,” noted Lauralee Baker, one of the tour coordinators. Along with private homes, the tour will feature the gardens of a local business and a prayer garden at a Marietta church. The First National Bank and Mulberry Thrill will be open at 100 W. Market St. for tours and refreshments during the garden tour.

People are really interested in the Marietta Community House and want to see it thrive.” The Marietta Community House is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and supporting Marietta through community events. Along with the greenery on display, the tour will give participants a chance to take in some of the unique architecture in town, Baker said, adding, “There’s a nice historical aspect to the tour. the making. So, to see a new facility able to directly help the homeless, those seeking further education, others needing financial counseling and individual case management, is truly an amazing success story.” Construction on the two-story building at 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, began in the fall of 2020 and was completed in January of this year. The community center houses various local social service agencies, including the Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS) offices and emergency shelter. “The building expansion at CPOW is truly a blessing,” said Brie Anderson, executive director of ECHOS. “One thing is for certain: Without this new space, ECHOS would not have the physical capacity to serve the number of community members who have sought us out for support. This building and partnership with UCEA have not only physically provided additional space to serve our neighbors in need, but have created a place where community partnerships can continue to be formed so that rural Lancaster residents have access to a network of services.” Natalie Dixon, development director for ECHOS, said although the agency moved into the new space last October, construction was just completed, and the open house gave the community the opportunity to see everything that’s available at CPOW. While ECHOS is the main tenant and features an emergency shelter, enrichment center and additional housing stability programs, CPOW also includes the Community Cupboard, Clothing Barn, Toastmasters, Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and more. “It is a central campus for community members in need to find a variety of social service agencies to meet their needs,” Dixon noted. Dixon emphasized that CPOW exists to support the community and the open house offered a way

IT’S BETTER FROM THE COUNTRY
For 120 years, Maytown has honored veterans with a Memorial Day parade. The early parades were sponsored by the Order of United American Mechanics, but after World War II, the American Legion Post 809 became the sponsor. This year’s parade will be held on Monday, May 30, beginning at 4 p.m. It’s part of a full day of activities in Maytown. The 59th annual Antique, Art, Craft and Collectible Show will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on East High Street. Sponsored by the Donegal Post 809 Ladies Auxiliary, the event will feature approximately 50 vendors. Food will be available for purchase, including fried vegetables and chicken corn
soup. The auxiliary will have a stand selling engraved bricks to honor veterans in Maytown Square. Beginning at 1 p.m., the community is invited to help decorate veterans’ graves, said Janie Garber, parade coordinator. “We’ll start at Maytown Reformed Church, and we’ll have a ceremony at each cemetery,” she stated, noting that members of the Bainbridge Band will play a selection at each location. The parade will kick off from North King Street and will proceed through town before ending at Maytown Square, where a ceremony will be held. The theme of this year’s parade is “Maytown Remembers.” “We have four bands participating in the parade

and be crowned Poppy Queen at the end of the parade, but she would also like to sell the most poppies ever of all past participants. “We’ve walked around in the rain with our umbrellas, selling poppies,” Alicia said. “Lily has been reaching out to everyone she knows. She’s very passionate about this, and she’s very close to her goal.” Lily will be joined in the parade by the other poppy kids - Mailyha Brady, Josie Neefe and Cayden McFadden. Proceeds from poppy sales will be donated to the Lebanon VA Medical Center. The parade is sponsored by the American Legion Post 197 and will feature the Bainbridge Band, local veterans and more, said Gina Mariani, parade coordinator. “We’re a true hometown parade,” she stated. “We have a really tight-knit group of people who participate every year. We also have a bike decorating contest, and we get about 20 or 30 little kids on bikes they’ve decorated.” The parade will leave from Bainbridge Elementary School and head south on Second Street to the Bainbridge Cemetery. At the cemetery, retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John Emrick will be the featured speaker. “We’ll also decorate veterans’ graves,” Mariani noted. The public is invited to a community picnic at the Bainbridge Fire Hall, 34 S. Second St., following the ceremony. For more information, contact Mariani at 717-278-8484.

Jillian Wivell, Kendall Hein, Lilah Drager and Olivia Shenk capped the podium finishes with a fifth place run in the 3200m relay. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team was hit with a double surprise following their season ending loss to Lancaster Mennonite on the 11th. Not only did the loss put the Bears at 11-8 overall, but it also dropped them to 15th in the final District 3-3A rankings, a mere 0.000333 behind State College for the final postseason berth. The second surprise came before the Mennonite game when head coach Lamar Fahnestock announced he was stepping down. “After much thought and changing my mind more times than I can count, I decided it was the best decision,” said Fahnestock. “I have poured my heart, soul, and much more into every team I have coached over the last 27 years. I leave having coached 22+ different teams of boys and girls at every level from middle school to club to college with the bulk being as a boy’s HS coach. “I can truly say I have loved every player I coached and will most definitely miss the chance to positively influence young athletes. However, it is time for me to take a breath.” As for his final game on the sidelines, it ended up being 3-1 loss to Lancaster

He served in the Air Force from 1958 to 1962. The poppy princess will be Vianna Brydon, a senior at Donegal High School. She is the daughter of Danny and Janet Love. Danny served in the military for 20 years. The featured speaker at the ceremony in the square will be Joseph Gallagher, a Vietnam War veteran who served in the Air Force. His speech is titled “All Gave Some, Some Gave All.” The Bainbridge Band will perform a medley of music at the square, and Post 809 commander Scott Mackison will read a list of Maytown veterans who have passed away. “We always get a lot of good feedback on the day,” Garber said. “People tell us it was very memorable, very moving and very veteran-oriented.” For more information, search for “Maytown Memorial Day Parade” on Facebook.
