Building character through bicycling
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past decade, Lee DeRemer has watched great things happen with Lifecycles. The nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program aims to build young people of character through bicycling.
“This program appeals to a wide range of young people with different gifts and skills, but it seems to really attract teen boys and girls who haven’t found their way in a team sport or another program in school,” he said.
“For many kids, this is the first thing that clicks, and that’s very rewarding.”
Lee and his wife, Marcie, started Lifecycles with a mission of supporting youths in the community.
“This program always has been and still is 100% free for the boys and girls who participate,” Lee said,
noting that bikes, helmets and other safety gear are all provided if needed, along with a free hot meal every time the group gets together for a ride.
“This year, we’ve got 139 boys and girls registered, and 38 of those are first-time participants,” he shared. “The bulk of our participants are from Lancaster County, but we have folks from York, Lebanon, Dauphin and Perry counties, too.” The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and Lifecycles teams are split into boys’ and girls’ groups. Boys’ and girls’ teams ride from Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, on Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m., and boys’ and girls’ teams also ride from Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville, at 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays.
In addition to the groups enjoying rides around the countryside
of Lancaster County, some of the more seasoned participants are training for longer, challenging rides taking place this summer. A girls’ team will ride a six-day, 230-mile route along the coast of Lake Michigan, finishing at Mackinac Island. Boys’ teams will ride a six-day, 320-mile route from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., on the Great Allegheny Passage/C&O Canal trail; a six-day, 290-mile route to Niagara Falls; and an eight-day, 350-mile route from northern Pennsylvania through the Adirondack Mountains. A boys’ team will also take a 13-day, 430-mile ride in Colorado, finishing with a summit of Mount Blue Sky on North America’s highest paved road at 14,271 feet.
“It’s going to be a very fun summer,” Lee said. “We are also rolling out an internally
Ten senior varsity athletes from Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) were honored on May 8 at the Spring Athlete Recognition Day ceremony, surrounded by their families, teammates, friends, and coaches. The event marked a milestone as the athletes confirmed their commitment to play collegiate sports next fall.
The student-athletes were spotlighted during the ceremony, announcing their decisions on where they will continue their athletic and academic journeys.
The following student-athletes were recognized along with their chosen sport and future institution: Maggie Clouser, who will play basketball at Lancaster Bible College; Alexis Cook, committing to play lacrosse at King’s College; Hayden Haver, joining Alvernia University’s football team; Holden Haver, continuing his lacrosse career at
Alvernia University; Jackson Kay, participating in cross-country and track at Messiah University; Bradley Kreider, running cross-country and track for Messiah University; Seth Rajnic, playing volleyball for Messiah University; Emma Schneider, baton twirling at the University of Memphis; Jillian Wivell, competing in cross-country and track at Gordon College; and Julie Zook, playing softball at Moravian University.
BY CATHY MOLITORISThe members of Proclamation Presbyterian Church in Mount Joy like to use a phrase to sum up their ministry: “All are welcome, all are needy and all are needed.”
“Christ gives His invitation to everyone, so are all welcomed in that sense,” said pastor Troy De Bruin. “We are all sinners in need of a Savior, so we are needy, and God has given gifts to every person, youngest to oldest, to
be used in service, so we are needed.”
As the church marks its 10th anniversary, De Bruin and associate pastor Collin Gingrich are looking forward to continued growth while looking back on their journey so far.
“We are a daughter church of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster,” De Bruin shared, noting that Westminster has a history of planting churches. De Bruin, who joined Westminster as a youth pastor
Proclaiming
in 2000, worked with Westminster staff to look for a new church home in the Mount Joy/Elizabethtown area in the fall of 2013.
By February of 2014, Proclamation Presbyterian Church was welcoming worshippers to services at Mount Joy Church of God. The church met on Sunday evenings, but after a few years, the congregation changed locations to be able to offer Sunday morning services. Proclamation met at Florin Church of the Brethren from April 2016 to March 2020 before moving to its current home at Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy.
Both De Bruin and Gingrich note that Proclamation offers the strength of the Presbyterian denomination combined with a small-town, community spirit.
“As a denomination, there’s a
high focus and priority on preaching the Word of God,” De Bruin said. “Our worship is both with reverence and with joy. … We intentionally rehearse the Gospel in our worship service, and we partake of the Lord’s Supper every week. Being a smaller church, that helps us to be more of a family, with a welcoming feeling. There is a true welcoming spirit and love for one another.”
Added Gingrich, “It’s in our name: Proclamation. Our weekly proclamation is the Gospel. We remember the Good News that Christ died for our sins. Each week, we are remembering that each one of us is a sinner, and we’re saved by God’s grace. … People are coming to Proclamation and finding healing and hope and stability in their Christian life.”

pastor, Gingrich served as a pastoral intern with Proclamation, and the church is working on growing the internship program, which prepares men for ministry.
The church wants to be a good neighbor, De Bruin said, whether that means supporting a community organization or equipping its members to love their actual neighbors in word and deed.
De Bruin noted that he typically preaches through the books of the Bible, most recently focusing on Romans. “Romans 15:7 says, ‘Welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you for the glory of God,’” he shared. “If someone is thinking about coming to Proclamation, we would want them to know they’d be welcomed with open arms.”
Proclamation holds services on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., preceded by Sunday school for people of all ages at 9 a.m. A 6 p.m. service is also held on the second and fifth Sundays of the month, and the church will hold vacation Bible school this summer in late July. Although the season has already started, youths can join the program at any point. Volunteers are

Empowering at-risk youths
BY CATHY MOLITORIS717-367-1115 (Elizabethtown)
717-533-6310 (Hershey)
With a mission to support community initiatives, The LINK Foundation was created as an outreach of LINKBANK. The foundation provides grants for projects that positively impact the local community, and Cornerstone Youth Center recently received one of those grants. The nonprofit youth center, located at 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown, will use the funds for its Empower Youth Leadership Initiative, a program aimed at empowering at-risk youths in the community.
Empower will meet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays from June 13 through July 25, said Jim Bush, executive director of Cornerstone. Open to students in grades nine through 11, the program is still accepting applications.
a ripple effect of positive change within our community,” Bush wrote on the grant application. “As these young leaders grow and flourish, they will become agents of positive transformation, inspiring their peers and contributing to the betterment of their neighborhoods.”
“This program will give students opportunities to develop their Godgiven leadership potential, as well as experience some great summer activities,” Bush shared. “Lunch will be provided each day, and each week will feature a field trip and activity that relates to the topic of the week.”
Empower will provide workshops, activities, and mentorship opportunities focused on developing skills such as effective communication, teamwork, decision making, and conflict resolution. “By investing in the leadership potential of at-risk youth, we aim to not only empower them as individuals, but also to create
Topics covered in the program will range from financial literacy - with lessons such as how to fill out a 1040 tax return - to personal growth, with students taught strategic planning to reach personal, professional or academic goals.
Grant funds will be used to provide meals for students and adult leaders, develop the curriculum, pay guest speakers to share their experiences, and host a graduation ceremony for students and their families at the program’s end.
Empower was introduced at Cor nerstone Youth Center in the summer of 2017, under the name Man Camp. At the time, it served young men in grades six through 12. The next summer, it moved to another youth center under the same leadership, where it grew, and a complementary girls’ program was added.
“This year, we intend to bring this combined program back to Cornerstone under the Empower Youth Leadership Initiative,” Bush said. “So, although this program has not been held at Cornerstone for a few years, the program is not a pilot program. It has been successful under the same leadership for several years.”
Noting that Cornerstone intends to hold the youth program annually going forward, Bush hopes Empower will have a lasting impact on participants.
“(Students) will be taught the importance of honesty, integrity, character, and giving back to their
