Maker’s Market will celebrate creativity
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“OurMaker’s Markets truly highlight local talent,” said Megan Shank, owner and operator of The Shank Shoppe. “ We celebrate the people we love and support by bringing their items to you. All of our vendors are curated, and we truly go the extra mile to find quality and variety.”
On Saturday, June 10, The Shank Shoppe will host a Kick Off to Summer Maker’s Market at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“We have a large variety of vendors, such as candle makers, macramé, paintings, baking, woodworking, home decor, bath and body items, blown glass, paper flowers, embroidery, apparel, upcycled
Strawberry Festival will feature food and fun
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Strawberries will be in the spotlight on Sunday, June 4, when Haldeman Mansion hosts its annual Strawberry Festival. The event will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at the mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge.
“We’ll have lots of food, plus games, music and activities for children,”
said Elaine Jackson, corresponding secretary for the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society. Food will include hot dogs, Groff’s bratwurst, chicken corn soup, chili, chips, strawberry shortcake with Turkey Hill ice cream, cheesecake with local strawberries, milkshakes, sundaes, strawberry lemonade and other drinks.

products, jewelry, stationery, stickers, hair accessories … and so much more,” Shank stated. Along with 100 vendors, the market will feature a petting zoo with baby goats (weather permitting) free face painting, a free blow-up slide, live music, a free photo booth area, a live art demonstration, giveaway baskets and a variety of food trucks. A free Pound class, which is a workout class using drumsticks, will be offered at 10 a.m. The first 100 guests to arrive at the market will receive a free tote bag.
Shank noted that The Shank Shoppe officially started in 2022, but she has been creating customized home decor, gifts and apparel for many years as a parttime hobby. “I have always made products for close friends and family, and when I was participating
in vendor markets, it frequently felt like markets weren’t focusing on the makers,” she explained.
“Deciding to handle markets differently was an easy decision to be able to highlight and serve the talented vendors right here in our area.”
Prior to opening The Shank Shoppe, Shank worked in the corporate dental industry for more than a decade. The combination of the pandemic and her daughter’s medical needs prompted Shank to focus on shifting careers to better serve her family’s needs.
“The Shank Shoppe is proudly a family-owned small business supporting fellow family-owned small businesses,” Shank stated, adding that she was able to hire her first two employees for the 2023 season.

Lasagna Love delivers kindness
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
There’s something comforting about a lasagna. That’s the message behind Lasagna Love, an international organization that began in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, recruiting volunteers to make and deliver lasagnas to people in need.
Sandi Mauer, coordinator of Lasagna
Love for Lancaster County, said the organization is looking for volunteers, as well as people who would like to receive a lasagna.
“ We are here to help anyone in need, and there’s no judgment whatsoever,” Mauer stated. “The goal of the program is to feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities.”
Mauer began volunteering with Lasagna Love last summer, and she soon found out that the county coordinator for the program didn’t live locally. She stepped up to organize efforts in the area, and lasagnas are currently delivered throughout Lancaster County by Lasagna Love volunteers.

Tina Mark will offer guided tours of the mansion, and a demonstration of hearth cooking will be featured. “We’ll have homemade bread, served with strawberry jam, of course,” Jackson remarked.
A silent auction will also be held, featuring candy from Mars Wrigley as well as other items. NEV Bluegrass will provide live music, and a variety of old-fashioned lawn games will be offered. “We always have a coloring contest with something that’s related to strawberries, and we have books to read to children as well as crafts for children,” Jackson stated.
Proceeds from the festival will be used to fund ongoing work at the man-
sion, which dates to 1811.
Current projects include replacing mantels on two fireplaces and renovating a room to hold a museum on Samuel Haldeman, a professor and scientist who lived at the property.
“I would encourage people to come to the Strawberry Festival, because the music is great and the view overlooking the river is so beautiful,” Jackson said. “You can meet up with people you know and meet new people, and it’s always a lot of fun.”
People are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the festival. Admission to the festival is free, but there is a small charge for parking. For more information, call 717-426-3794.

Healthy Homes Program
“People can sign up for a lasagna if they have any need,” Mauer explained, adding that people can sign up at https://lasagnalove.org/request. “It could be a financial need or a health issue or an emotional need, or anyone who just needs a break from life for a moment. They can request a lasagna, and then we match them up with a volunteer who will deliver it. We don’t turn anyone down for any reason.”
Mauer noted that Lasagna Love is a great program to volunteer with, because volunteers can set their own schedules. “If you only want to do one lasagna a month, you can do that,” she remarked. “If you only want to make a lasagna one time, you can do it one time and be
done. If you want to do four lasagnas a month, one every week, you can do that, too. You can also set up your own delivery radius and drive as far or as close as you want to deliver.” She noted that there are options to make meat or vegetarian lasagnas and that lasagnas can be delivered unbaked or baked.
Lasagna Love began in 2020 when Rhiannon Menn founded the organization in San Diego to spread kindness through home-cooked meals. Mauer noted that a study of more than 30,000 people who have received lasagnas revealed the impact of the program. “Ninetyeight percent of the recipients said that they were inspired to pay it forward,
and 21% had already done so within just a few days of receiving their lasagna,” she noted, adding that they didn’t necessarily make another lasagna, but did something f or somebody else. “I really love the ripple effect of this project. It just makes me feel good to participate in this project.” She also noted that quite often people who have been recipients of a lasagna become volunteers working for the organization.
Mauer, who says she enjoys cooking, noted that people do not have to be professional chefs to make a lasagna. “I follow different Lasagna Love groups on Facebook, and I’ll see there are new people signing up to do it who say they’ve never made a lasagna

Watershed Expo will highlight local environment
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This is our favorite outreach event because we are able to bring so many people together, both exhibitors and visitors, that share a passion for clean water and an excitement for taking measures to be good stewards of our local environment,” said Steve Gergely, describing the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance’s Watershed Expo. “Having families and children attend is also great to introduce young people to their local environment in a fun way. There are numerous hands-on activities that keep
everyone engaged.”
The expo will be held on Wednesday, June 7, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave.
“A variety of environmental organizations will have display tables,” said Gergely, who is the president of the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance. “The theme is ‘Environmental and Watershed Stewardship.’ We’ll also have a fish shocking demonstration from the Lancaster County Conservation District, fish-print T-shirt making, a creekside macroinvertebrate lesson from the Lancast-
er County Parks Department, tours of the recently renovated Memorial Park and floodplain restoration project, rain barrel painting and a giveaway, water balloon tossing, a food truck, free ice cream and a band.”
Gergely said the Alliance is especially excited to offer tours of the completed floodplain restoration project. “Hosting the expo directly adjacent to the park could not be a better way to demonstrate positive things that are happening in our watershed,” he remarked.
He encourages everyone to come out to the expo, noting, “Visitors can expect to have a nice family evening out by the Chiques Creek, where they can socialize and interact with various exhibitors. And they can expect to learn new things and to hopefully be inspired.”
Gergely added that people who wish to participate in the macroinvertebrate lesson in the creek should bring shoes and clothes that can get wet. For more information on the expo, search for “Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance” on Facebook or visit www.chiques creekwatershed.com.

“This is a free event that’s fun for the whole family,” said Danielle States, who is organizing the Marietta Community House Children’s Festival with Audrey Kushner Pombo. “It’s geared toward school-age kids.”
The festival will be held at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., on Saturday, June 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will include a variety of events and activities, said Pombo. “We will have live music from Nick DiSanto, a one-man band,” she stated, adding that magicians Mr. Sneakers and Alex Iverson will present a magic show at 1 p.m. Pony rides will be offered by Chateau Ponies, and additional activities will include a bounce house and face painting. Free food and drinks will be available as well. A variety of games, including a bean bag toss, cornhole and a fishing game, will be featured, with prizes.
As States explained, the Children’s Festival was created by Marietta Community House board member Kathy Lehman in 2019 with the goal of making it an annual event. The pandemic put a pause on the festival for a few years, but States noted she and Pombo are excited to bring the community event back.
All activities will be held outside, but restrooms will be available inside the building. Also inside, visitors can pick up information on Marietta Community House membership. With a history dating back hundreds of years, Marietta Community House has played a central part in the town. Originally a private home, it became a sanitarium at the turn of the 19th century and a soup kitchen during the Great Depression. Today, it’s a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and supporting Marietta through community events. For more information on Marietta Community House, visit https://marietta communityhouse.org or search for “The Marietta Community House” on Facebook.

One and done might be an OK phrase when talking about college basketball and the NBA but if your attention is turned to the world of high school sports and the playoffs that come with them, it is not a phrase you want to hear. Need proof, look no further than Elizabethtown High School...the Bears placed
three different teams into the postseason only to have all three falter in their opening round contests.
The first of those came on the baseball diamond where E-town dropped their District 3-5A first round game to Warwick on May 19th by a 6-1 final. The Bears enjoyed a 1-0 lead thanks to Kaden Kimble’s first inning RBI single, but it was all Warriors from there.
They knotted the game in the top of the second and moved ahead for good with a three run fourth. Add in the two run fifth and you get the 6-1 final.
Isaiah Shayter took the loss after covering the opening four and one third innings. He was hit with all six Warwick runs, although just two were earned thanks to three E-town errors. Kimble finished the pitching, adding two walks and three strikeouts to Shayter’s five walks and two strikeouts. Shayter did have two hits at the plate, but Elizabethtown managed only three other hits - Kimble’s first inning single as well as singles by Noah Locke and Cade Capello.
SOFTBALL
The softball team was up next, dropping their District 3-5A first round affair to Mechanicsburg by a 14-0 final on the 22nd. The contest lasted only five innings thanks largely to the Lady Wildcats
12-run second inning. Add in single runs in the first and third and the 10-run rule kicked in after E-town at-bats in the top of the fifth.
Breonna Edgell pitched the initial two frames and took the loss. Cassidy Leitzel and Savannah Bradley also saw action in the circle for the Lady Bears.
VOLLEYBALL
Elizabethtown’s final district playoff participant saw their season come to a close on the 23rd. It was there that the Bear volleyball team fell to Northeastern by a 3-0 final. The 25-14, 25-19 and 25-13 finals.
“There’s a reason they are top 5 in the state,” said head coach David Hoffmann. “Fahnestock has his team ready to play anybody and they are going to be contenders for the district and state title. We did our homework on film and in practice, but we caught Northeastern at a time where they needed
to get their season back on track.”
Eli Miller, one of E-town’s two second team Section Two All-Star members, dished out 14 assists with fellow second teamer Josh McCoy recording five kills. Cooper Torborg, the lone Bear on the First Team All-Star squad had one ace. Prabin Bhattarai matched that one ace while adding five digs. Finn McCoy tacked on two blocks.
TRACK
The track and field season came to a close on May 19th and 20th for all but one Elizabethtown athlete. That one athlete is Anna Rank who took part in the District 3-3A pole vault, clearing 12’ to take home bronze and earn a return trip to Shippensburg University for the PIAA meet.
The Bears had a few near misses in Shippensburg with Juan Lopez, Felicia Morris and Noreen Lehman all finishing 11th in their respective events. Lopez did his work in the 400m where he posted a 50.61. Morris picked up her 11th place finish after covering 35’ 2.5” in the triple jump while Lehman’s 11th place finish came in the javelin thanks to a 114’ 7” throw.
Ali Fink and Jordan DiRisio both took part in the 1600m where Fink finished 13th with a 5:18.21 and DiRisio 17th with a 5:24.45. DiRisio added an 18th place run in the 3200m to her weekend.
For the boys, the final district entry came from the 1600m relay team of Owen Dommel, Jason Stark, Djemba N’Dikwe and Lopez who finished 15th with a 3:34.26.

Mt. Hope will mark birthday
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will celebrate its 54th birthday, and you’re invited to the party. The facility, which provides care for seniors and people with disabilities regardless of their ability to pay, will host a “Love Mt. Hope Giving Day” on Friday, June 2, which marks the community’s birthday, as well as an old-fashioned community picnic on Saturday, June 17.
“The one-day give is a chance to pay it forward, and together, we can change lives,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement at Mt. Hope. “On this one-day giving challenge, generous gifts make an impact today and for the future.” Donations may be made online at https://mthopenazarene.org or by mail to the retirement community. For details on how to donate by mail, contact Wilson at advancement @mthopenazarene.org.
“We encourage people to help us reach our one-day goal of $20,000,” Wilson remarked, adding that a few anonymous donors have pledged to match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000.
The community is also invited to the picnic, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., rain or shine, at Mt. Hope. “We are so excited to host an event on our campus again,” Wilson shared. “In the past, Mt. Hope always invited the community out for a summer picnic in June and a fall harvest fest in October, but we have not been able to do an in-person event since the summer of 2019 due to limitations and regulations on nursing homes surrounding the coronavirus.”
She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the landscaped grounds of the retire-
ment community while spending time with friends and family. “This is also a warm invitation for anyone who wants to see where we are located, hear about who we are, the work we do and relax in the rolling farming countryside of Manheim,” she added.
Mt. Hope’s old-fashioned summer picnic meal will include a choice of grilled burgers or chicken sandwiches, with the meat donated by Elstonville Sportsman’s Association in Manheim. Other picnic meal items will include Mt. Hope’s famous baked beans, chips, cookies and assorted drinks. Music will be provided at the picnic by Mark Shaw of the Lancaster County-based Celtic/Irish band Boys From Innisfree.
John Wagner, a longtime Manheim community resident and former Mt. Hope board member, described Mt. Hope as one of Lancaster County’s best-kept secrets. “My mother was there for almost 27 years until she passed at the age of 104,” Wagner shared. “Mother was well cared for and enjoyed the pleasant surroundings and loving staff. The meals were exceptional, and she loved it.” He added that Mt. Hope prioritizes caring for those in need of financial assistance as well as physical care. “That’s why their mission statement is ‘to minister to the least of these,’” he said.
There is a suggested minimum donation for each picnic meal. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn

chairs and blankets. The event will be held outside only, with outside restrooms available. Proceeds will support the residents of Mt. Hope. To reserve a meal, contact Wilson at advancement @mthopenazarene.org or call 717-682-8026.

Funding will benefit Girls on the Run
With aims to combat health disparities and advance fitness and friendships among adolescent girls, Rite Aid Healthy Futures has renewed its partnership with Girls on the Run (GOTR) through a $1 million grant supporting the organization’s continued inclusion, diversity, equity and access (IDEA)
work. The announcement comes as local GOTR councils prepare for their end-of-season 5Ks.
GOTR’s experience-based curriculum integrates running to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. The organization currently operates 171 local councils across the United States and Canada, serving nearly 200,000 girls annually.
The recent funding marks the third year of partnership between GOTR and Rite Aid
Healthy Futures, the public charity affiliated with Rite Aid. The grant supports the two organizations’ shared commitment to strengthening and empowering local communities.
The $1 million grant will benefit the GOTR headquarters as well as the 50 local councils in Healthy Futures’ f ootprint, with funding f ocused on the continued development of GOTR’s IDEA program. In particular, GOTR is focused on reaching girls
from underserved communities, promoting a culture of inclusion across the organization, building a culturally competent curriculum and increasing local resources in key communities.
Local councils will use the funds to diversify their coaching staff, increase program access for girls of color and further enhance programming that acknowledges the needs and realities of their communities.

swiftly adapting services and programming to serve girls meaningfully and safely during the pandemic.
Together with donors, Rite Aid associates, community partners and neighbors, Rite Aid Healthy Futures, formerly known as the Rite Aid Foundaion, has donated more than $15 million a year to causes, initiatives and organizations that make a difference in people’s lives. Visit

Luthercare recently awarded $18,000 in scholarships to help advance the education of local graduating high school seniors who are pursuing careers in nursing. The recipients had distinguished themselves through their written essay, letters of reference, and passion for the field.
One-time, $5,000 scholarships were presented to Annika Bollinger of Cocalico High School and Tori Heiserman of Lampeter-Strasburg High School.
A special one-time, $3,000 scholarship, the Mary Roth Nursing Scholarship, was awarded to Vanessa Russo of Northern Lebanon High School. The scholarship was named in memory of Mary Roth, a longtime Lititz and Luther Acres resident who passed away in 2019 at age 95. Her sister, who is also a resident of Luther Acres, wanted to find a
meaningful way to recognize what would have been Mary’s 100th birthday this year and chose to help fund the education of a future nurse by setting up the scholarship.
One-time, $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Kyra Bixler of Garden Spot High School; Sydney Brubaker of Donegal High School; Isabel Harnish of Annville-Cleona High School; Sophia Lutz of Lancaster Country Day School; and Savannah Stauffer of Ephrata Senior High School.
The winners will continue their education and professional development at Clemson University, Lebanon County Career and Technology Center, Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, Villanova University, and York College of Pennsylvania.
