E-Dance will present “A Night at the Movies”
BY CATHY MOLITORISCome to Elizabethtown College for “A Night at the Movies,” but don’t expect anything on a big screen. Instead, get ready to enjoy a recital featuring hundreds of dancers from E-Dance Center in Elizabethtown. The recital, featuring a movie theme, will be held in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 9.
“The recital features over 270 dancers ages 6 to 70 years old,” shared Camille Gubbins, owner of E-Dance Center. Dance genres will include ballet, tap, hip-hop, musical theater and clogging. Audiences can expect to see tributes to popular movies, including “Avatar,” “Trolls,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Guardians
of the Galaxy,” “The Sound of Music,” “Barbie” and more.
“There really is something for everyone in this year’s show,” Camille said. “We have numbers from old Western movies to space movies to current trends such as the Taylor Swift Eras Tour. We will even have a red carpet entrance into the lobby at Leffler Chapel.”
A movie theme was the perfect way to showcase the dancers’ talent and emphasize the creativity of the arts, she explained.
“Movies have a profound impact in our lives and the world around us. They remind us that within the boundless realms of our imagination, anything is possible, and that is a truly empowering and inspiring message,” she said. “Movies allow us to envision worlds beyond our own, to dream big and to create something truly remarkable.”
Camille, who became the owner
of E-Dance Center last June with her husband, Christopher, has been a teacher at the studio for a decade. E-Dance is in its 19th year serving students in central Pennsylvania. Camille said taking an active role in the local community is an important goal of the studio and its dancers.
“We have been involved in parades both here in Elizabethtown and in Harrisburg,” she commented. “We perform at retirement communities and baseball games and various local events. Our goal is to share our love of dance and the arts with our community.”

BY CATHY MOLITORISIn a former parking lot next to George Shinkosky’s house in Marietta, a grand piano serves as a garden centerpiece. The musician and avid fan of whimsy has removed the keys and planted pansies in their place. It’s just one of the many secret treasures you’ll discover on the Marietta Garden Tour. The event will be held on Sunday, June 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature eight gardens, each with unique perspectives.
“There are some very unusual creations by people on this tour,” said Karen Sullivan, garden tour chair. “You’ll be surprised by what you see. The difference among the eight is unusual also. It’s amazing what people think of and invent in their gardens.” George and his wife, Pat, spent more than a year transforming the area next to their home into a two-level space filled with yard sale and architectural finds, including a greenhouse George built from repurposed parts. A highlight of the space is a

new hometown of Mount Joy. In the beginning, the product selection was more of a general store - appliances large and small, electronics, toys, bikes and accessories, mowers and garden tools, paint and automotive (a very small section). The store moved from the small space at 18 W. Main St. next door to its current location (and former G.C. Murphy) in 1982 and the garage was built in 1985. two parts, the first of which focused on imagery. Each student had prepared two or three pieces with titles that evoked images, and the students had spent time reflecting on how the composer had sought to create a picture using sounds. Some students had created stories based on their pieces. Before each student played, Bubacz spoke about the pieces, and the student played excerpts that illustrated different elements of the image or story. The student then played the pieces in their entirety. The selections included “Whirlwind,” “The Planets,” “Clair de Lune,” “Sunrise,” “Square Dance,” “Teasing Song,” “In a Japanese Garden,” “Bridling,” “On the Blue Ridge,” and “Why Am I Blue?” In the second part of the program, the audience heard compositions by Kuhlau, Massenet, Bastien, and others. A folk song and a selection from “Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach” were included. The program ended with Sarah playing a violin solo accompanied by Bubacz.
Clint Gibble of LIV-Etown, one of the organizers of the event, noting that the social will be held on Father’s Day. This year’s event is partially sponsored by the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown and the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce and presented by LIV-Etown. “LIV is an acronym for ‘local interactive vitality,’ and (LIVEtown) strives to create free community events and activities that bring people together by being a part of the event, not just attending it,” explained Tony Gibble, one of the event organizers.
Ross Productions will serve as master of ceremonies and DJ at the amphitheater in the park, and the event will include live entertainment and food trucks. “This year will feature two firsts for the Strawberry Social - the Berry Paws Couture dog fashion show by Fetch! Pet Care and our strawberry queen, United States of America’s Mrs. Pennsylvania, will crown the first strawberry princess,” Tony said. “The princess will be selected based on who attends showing the most spirit and devotion to the theme which is ‘Strawberries, Red and Wild.’”
The social will also include a variety of games
and children’s activities with prizes, free chocolate-covered strawberries from Mars Wrigley and the Masonic Village Farm Market, a maker’s mart area presented by Trade Faire, a “meet the businesses of downtown” area, free strawberry ice cream by Figments in Sprinkles, a free strawberry candy buffet by The Candy Unicornium, free bounce houses and a pie- and cupcake-eating contest sponsored by Myers Advantage Realty. Free water bottles will be provided throughout the park by Weis Markets.
The Strawberry Social offers countless ways to have fun, Tony said, whether that’s by relaxing in the park or getting in on the action. “You can kick back and enjoy the entertainment at the amphitheater, play some games and watch some street performers,” he said. “Get messy by taking part in the pie- and cupcake-eating contest, and cool off at the end of the day with a water blaster battle. You can also do some shopping from local artisans and sample some offerings from the local area and downtown Elizabethtown businesses.”
He encourages people to come out to the park for a day of fun, adding, “Whatever you do, whether
it’s one thing or you do everything, if you enjoy a laid-back, small-town community event with charm and fun for all, this is one you don’t want to miss.”
Anyone who would like to participate in the Strawberry Social as a volunteer, representing a business or showcasing a talent may contact LIVetownevents@ gmail.com.
