Elizabethtown theater students earn Apollo Awards
BY CATHY MOLITORISBroadway performers earn recognition for their performances through the Tony Awards. High school theater students in central Pennsylvania have the Apollo Awards. Created in 2008, the awards are presented by Hershey Theatre, and this year, several Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) students were honored at the awards ceremony held on May 19.
Claire Hanlon won Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of the title character in “Mary Poppins,” the EAHS spring musical. Brendan Fritz won Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Bert in the same show. Brendan also won Best Actor in a Play for his role as Max/Cecil/Arthur
in the school’s fall production of “The Play That Goes Wrong.”
Olivia Gable and Emma Griffith were presented with the Spirit of Theatre Award to recognize their

contributions to the EAHS theater program behind the scenes. Along with these awards, EAHS was nominated for Best Play for “The Play That Goes Wrong,” Best Musical for “Mary Poppins,” Best Dance Number in a Musical and Best Student Orchestra. Olivia
received an honorable mention for Featured Performance in a Musical for her portrayal of Miss Andrew, and Scott Creason received an honorable mention for Best Actor in a Musical for his role of George Banks.
At the ceremony, the “Mary Poppins” cast entertained with a memorable number from the musical.
“The musical cast performed ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ on stage and was practically perfect,” said Christy Blaisdell, EAHS theater productions director. “Our students were respectful, supportive of each other and other schools, and showed class and grace all day.”

This summer’s music series, which includes 12 concerts at Long’s Park Amphitheater, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, will feature artists performing genres of music from American rock to gospel rock, from the blues to bluegrass, from country to pop rock. All of the shows will be performed on Sundays starting between 7 and 8 p.m., and most of the concerts last from 90 minutes to two hours.
The sponsor-supported, publicly funded, allweather shows are free to attend.
“As a foundation, we believe that music is not only important to a community but vital,” said Chronister. “Art is meant to be consumed, whether you can afford it or not. The summer series can enable people to experience music without leaving their community and not spending any money. We regularly have people thanking us because that particular artist got them through a hard time. That’s important to us. We believe music

On average, about 3,000 spectators make up the audiences for each performance.
“There is such a deep history with the Summer Music Series. It’s almost Lancaster lore,” said Chronister. “Not long after Long’s Park was founded, the amphitheater was built. The mission of the foundation became, ‘We’ve got this amazing venue, so let’s see what we can do to bring
music into Lancaster.’ From an evolution experience, we’ve grown it and then maintained it. We’ve taken cues from the public about what they want to hear.”

in southcentral Pennsylvania. The program offers scholarships and theatrical opportunities. “One of the best parts is the opportunity to perform on a professional stage for a larger audience,” Blaisdell said. “Whether or not students are planning on going into theater in the future, it is an amazing taste of the professional world.”
She noted that high school theater students deserve to be recognized for their hard work. “These students spend hundreds of hours creating a performance not just to entertain audiences, but to be a part of the experience of creating it,” she commented. “They grow and learn and perfect skills. They challenge themselves and others. They are equally important as academic scholars, athletes, artists, etc., and deserve to be celebrated for all that they give to the community.”
She said she’s proud of Brendan and Claire for their awards as well as all of the students who represented the EAHS theater program in the ceremony.
“It is an honor to be nominated and have hard work and talent recognized; however, at E-town, we always want students to know that winning or not winning an award does not dictate how amazing they are and it does not take away from their efforts,” she said, adding that one of the many benefits of performing arts is the opportunity it gives students to foster self-confidence. “Theater is a place where you can be a million different people on stage but be reminded that the person you are off stage is amazing and worthy of love and respect.”

Book provides meaning, perspective to unimaginable
BY JEFF FALKLife isn’t easy; it’s full of pitfalls and setbacks and heartache. But few things, if anything, can compare to the pain brought on by the loss of a child.
Since losing her 10-yearold daughter Libby two years ago, Brooke Carlock’s life has been consumed by grief. She has tried everything to cope with it - to somehow manage it - including authoring a book, “Grief Sucks (But Your Life Doesn’t Have To).”
“It was awful. It’s the most awful thing that can happen to anyone,” said Carlock, a resident of Elizabethtown and an eighthgrade English/language arts teacher at Warwick Middle School. “It’s the call you never want to get. You know it could happen to you, but you never think it will. What I was looking for was someone to tell me what to do. But there are no instructions for grief.”
Carlock self-published her book at the beginning of April. The 133-page publication, her first, took four months to write.
For Carlock, a published freelance writer, the book evolved from a blog designed to handle her grief.
“I always wanted to write a book, but never had anything I was super motivated to write about,” said Carlock. “It was much easier to write than I thought it would be. It was therapeutic. I just
kind of put everything I was going through out there. I’m not really anyone special. I’m just an average, everyday person putting it out there and being honest. I think that’s what people respond to.”
A fifth-grader at John R. Bonfield Elementary School in Lititz, Libby Shannon Miller was a joy for everyone to be around. But she was the apple of her mother’s eye.
The date was Feb. 9, 2022, and Libby’s older brother Max had just picked her up from dance class. At the precarious intersection of Lititz Road and Route 72, the car they were riding in was struck by a truck on Libby’s side.
She died at the scene.
“At her funeral, 10 kids spoke, and they all said she was their best friend,” said Carlock. “She was silly and funny, and she always had a smile for everyone. She was the kid who would sit with the kids who didn’t have any friends in the cafeteria. She was the best. She was a ray of sunshine.”
Since Libby’s passing, Carlock has started her own YouTube channel, gone through therapy, become a grief counselor and helped establish LiveLikeLibby, a foundation that provides financial aid for youths interested in dancing - the thing in this world that Libby was most passionate about. Carlock has also gone

back to work at Warwick Middle School, in search of her life’s new normal.
But before she did, Carlock had to face her grief and look it straight in the eye.
“How do you deal with it? Very simply, you don’t have a choice,” said Carlock. “It’s something you honestly never get over. I have a million memories of her every day. I know I have to keep moving forward. It’s never about getting over it. It’s a constant part of my life. My grief is my companion.”

To help nurture more watershed-friendly properties, Penn State Extension will offer the Master Watershed Steward Watershed-Friendly Native Plant Kit Sale through Tuesday, June 18.
The kits are designed to help individuals incorporate more native plants into their property. The pickup locations include sites in Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Delaware, Lancaster, Montgomery, and York counties.
The kits contain plant plugs carefully selected from species grown by Kind Earth Grower using locally collected, open-source pollinated seeds and 50% peat-free growing media. Plant plugs are smaller than those typically found in nurseries, allowing for easier transportation and planting within existing vegetation. The plugs have healthy root systems that should establish this fall so plants can flourish next growing season.
The kit options are the Sunny Soggy Bottoms Kit and Shady Soggy Bottoms Kit for wettersoil areas as well as the
Wildlife Magnet Kit, which contains generalist plants that provide food and habitats for numerous pollinators and wildlife. All three kit options are available in two sizes. Bountiful Kits include five species with five individual plants of each species, for a total of 25 plants. Container Kits include five species with one plant of each species, for a total of five plants.
Individuals may choose their kit and select the pickup location most convenient to them. Proceeds will support the Master Watershed Steward program in providing volunteer-driven education and restoration work in the customer’s region.
