Elizabethtown Class of 2024 urged to step out of comfort zone
BY CATHY MOLITORISMembers of the Elizabethtown Area High School Class of 2024 were encouraged to take risks, work hard and step outside of their comfort zones in speeches delivered by students and faculty during a graduation ceremony held on June 4 at the LCBC Manheim campus.
“Floating down this stream of life we are all in, through all the bends and turns, it is easy to let the water take you, close your eyes and relax as the current does the work,” said senior speaker Jillian Wivell. “Until you hit a rock, then another and then run straight into a log, all because you’re not paying attention but letting the forces around you do the work as you simply follow. On the contrary, it is far more difficult to swim against the current.” She encouraged her peers to go against the flow, noting that fighting upstream will make them stronger.
“The world awaits, and at times when it seems dark, selfish and hopeless, we can choose to be the people that are remembered with fondness, the people that stepped out of the clique, out of society’s expectations and out of the crowd to be a positive influence in the lives of others,” she said. “Let’s leave our own original impact on our community and our world by stepping out of the safe zone with bold confidence in who each of us were created to be.”
Jaycen Conrad was named valedictorian at the ceremony. He urged his classmates to look back on the time they spent in school, remembering the friends they made, the teachers they liked and the athletic or academic accomplishments they achieved.
“I encourage you to take time to cherish the moments that are left in the past, because once you walk across this stage tonight, you are on a path straight to the future,” he said.
He also told his peers to take
action and create the future they want. “Do not simply wait around for an opportunity to fall directly on your lap,” he said. “The world before us is brimming with infinite possibilities and opportunities, and it is up to us to go and find them. Not just to find the opportunities that have been laid out for us, but to create them for ourselves - and maybe others
as well.”
Mikaela Condran was named salutatorian. In her speech, she encouraged her classmates not to be intimidated by the current state of the world. “As we begin our young adulthoods in a complicated and turbulent world where college and work are only a part, we also have the responsibility to consider the
BY CATHY MOLITORISSpeaking to her fellow Class of 2024 graduates, Mount Calvary Christian School valedictorian Alivia Rutt encouraged her peers to reflect on the past while looking to the future.
“These past four years have gone by quickly,” she said. “Beginning as little freshmen wearing masks, we felt slightly disconnected during our first high school memories. But that is not where we have ended. Today, we are closer than ever. Through meaningful memories - Bible studies, holding hands during prayer or worshiping on the beach and streets during senior trip - God has had His hand in every moment, bringing us closer together in our love for each other.”
Mount Calvary celebrated the graduation of 27 students on May 31 at the school, 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown. The ceremony included remarks from Chris Etter, secondary principal; an invocation by Elise McKelvey; Scripture reading by Abigail Yordy; and testimony by Kiley Etter. Ava Fouse and Alana Kelley provided special music. Bradley Burkholder, a member of the Class of 2005, delivered the commencement address.
Alivia, the daughter of Jamie and Tiann Rutt of Elizabethtown, reminded her fellow graduates to never forsake God, no matter what the future brings. “We must always be intentional to act like Christ … and to act on God’s call and conviction

Lauren Enterline was named salutatorian. She is the daughter of Brian and Kellianne Enterline of Harrisburg. “Freshman year brought five new students into our class. I was one of them,” she told her classmates. “I may have been new, but it did not take long to realize I had not joined a class but rather a family, a family that would learn and grow closer together over the next four years. When I reflect on my time at Mount Calvary, I think of two main words: connection and growth.”

She also fondly recalled the Class of 2024’s senior trip, when students spent a week at the beach.
“Whether it was a latenight trip to 7-Eleven, time spent on the playground blasting songs, a fire on the beach filled with sharing fond memories and crying tears of sadness and joy, singing worship songs together on the beach in the dead of night surrounded by the stars (or) kayaking through crocodile-infested waters … the connections and deepened friendships we built are going to keep us connected for years to come,” she said.
She emphasized how much the Class of 2024 has grown over the past four years, bonding as students and cultivating deep roots of faith.

Professionals warn aspiring cliff divers not to jump to conclusions
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDIn the ever-changing world of social media and the online landscape, new trends often take the country - and even the whole world - by storm. Nearly every American will groan at the mention of formerly ubiquitous internet trends such as the “cinnamon challenge,” which encouraged thousands of people to try swallowing an entire spoonful of the potent spice without coughing. As always, the general public gradually loses interest in these trends to make room for whatever hot topic will take its place. Most online trends are relatively harmless, but some of them, including the budding fad of rock and cliff diving, pose a serious risk to people who engage in them without taking the necessary precautions.
In recent weeks, various social media platforms have seen an increase of content depicting thrill seekers who enjoy plunging from the top of steep cliffs into rivers and
other bodies of water. The precarious pastime has been safely practiced by trained professionals and extreme sportsmen for years, but the abrupt and widespread interest among teenagers and young adults has prompted many local school districts to issue a warning to Lancaster County residents interested in trying it out themselves. Due to the county’s proximity to the Susquehanna River, which is easily accessible to areas such as Pequea, Washington Boro, Holtwood and Columbia, local medical professionals have made an effort to discourage attempts to practice cliff jumping in the area.
Recently, some school administrators sent an email to students and their parents to highlight a few specific concerns, asserting “there is nothing remotely safe about cliff jumping or diving into the Susquehanna River.” Due to the presence of a hydroelectric dam in Safe Harbor, the river has an unpredictable variation in depth that

poses a threat to any diver, and many submerged objects are not visible from high above the surface.
Additionally, many people believe jumping into water is entirely safe because of the cushion the water provides. According to the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) website, most cliff diving related injuries are associated with the water entry, and divers’ entry position plays a key role in how severely an individual can be injured.
BIA announces Parade of Homes
The Building Industry Association of Lancaster County (BIA) has announced the annual virtual and in-person Parade of Homes. The event opened on June 15 and will continue on Wednesday, June 19, through Sunday, June 23. Tour hours are
weekdays from 5 to 8 p.m. and weekends from noon to 6 p.m.
Sponsored by Fulton Bank and UGI Utilities and presented by BIA, the Lancaster/Lebanon Parade of Homes is a free public event that opens new homes for in-person and virtual tours.
This year’s parade features 22 single-family homes, duplexes and remodeling projects from 13 different builders, ranging in price from $499,999 to over $1 million. Participants may visit 19 of the 22 homes in person and/or all the homes virtually utilizing 3D technology, providing a room-by-room view of each home’s innovative designs and details.
Detailed information on all of the home entries is available at www.lancaster paradeofhomes.com.
The ParadeSmart app is an additional feature that provides home details, directions and customizable routes. After downloading the app from their
app store, users should select the BIA Parade of Homes. The Parade of Homes Guidebooks with the same information is available at the BIA office, 204 Butler Ave., Lancaster, and copies of the book were mailed to more than 100,000 Lancaster and Lebanon County households.
The 2024 Parade of Homes showcases more than $17 million in new home construction and remodeling in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, incorporating the latest in design, decorating and trends, including smart home technology. This year’s featured trends include a first-floor owner’s suite, flexible living space, neighborhood amenities, smart features and a 55 and up community. Each trend is assigned an icon with the home’s listing in the guidebook and website to help people find the features they are looking for.
During a study conducted in 2013, NLM determined foot and ankle injuries as the most common result of cliff diving, and more than 50% of injured divers entered the water feet first. While you’re brainstorming fun activities to try out this summer, it may be wise to heed medical professionals’ warning and remember that the Susquehanna River isn’t known for its diving-friendly landscapeno matter how exciting the activity may seem online.
Other elements in select homes include hidden storage solutions and flex rooms; a secondary, prep kitchen with a sink, dishwasher, microwave and beverage fridge; primary baths with freestanding soaker tubs and tile showers; a two-story family room with double chandeliers and a wall of windows; stone and shiplap fireplaces; coffered and tray ceilings; quartz countertops with oversized islands; wood beam-cased openings at the foyer; matte black appliances; interior and exterior statement lighting; and hardwood staircases with open stringers and high-contrast metal stair railings.
The homes were judged by a panel of building and industry experts, with awards presented at the annual Parade of Homes Gala on June 14. Homes were classified into divisions by price and judged with other homes in the

What starts out as an odd series of deaths in the town turns into an international crisis that draws in the president of the United States and an old Vietnam veteran with a promise to end the lives of those responsible for these crimes.
