Summerfest will offer food and music
in a picturesque setting
BY CATHY MOLITORISNothing says summer like an outdoor concert. Toss in time with friends, tasty food, beer and wine, and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect night out. Nissley Vineyards will host its annual Summerfest concert series on Friday and Saturday evenings from July 5 through Aug. 31. Concerts will be held on the lawn at the vineyard, 140 Vintage Drive, Bainbridge.
“We are one of the area’s longest-running outdoor music venues, with 2024 being our 42nd season,” said Jonas Nissley,
general manager. “It’s a beautiful, relaxing setting to be enjoyed by dancers, music lovers, wine lovers, beer lovers and anyone who enjoys live music in a relaxing, picturesque environment.”
New this year, Nissley will feature family-friendly Friday nights, when milkshakes and non-alcoholic slushies will be served, and face painting will be available. Saturday evening concerts are for people age 21 and up.
Adding the family nights will help bring the Summerfest experience to even more people, Nissley said. “We want to be able to share our venue with people of
all ages,” he explained. “For many years, children were welcome at our lawn concerts. Later in life, those kids started attending our concerts as adults. We want our venue to be a place where different generations of the same family can enjoy what we offer.”
To find bands for the summer concert series, Nissley staff members scout local shows in search of top talent. Many of the performers have been entertaining at the vineyard for more than a decade, Nissley noted. Summerfest will kick off on Friday, July 5, with a concert by PopScotch. The band performs
BY CATHY MOLITORISMarietta Fireworks will present its annual display on Thursday, July 4, but for Gary Schatz and other volunteers, the show is a year-round endeavor.
“I pay attention to what other people do and look around to see what’s available,” Schatz said. “I see our supplier on and off all
year, and we toss ideas around. I look at it like, ‘Can I do that? What does it take to do that?’”
The fireworks will be shot off from Donegal Intermediate School on River Road in Marietta beginning at 9:15 p.m. or when conditions permit, and this year’s show promises to be as impressive as ever, Schatz commented.
BY CATHY MOLITORISLectures, concerts, children’s programs and more will be part of the Pennsylvania Chautauqua happening this summer in Mount Gretna. Chautauqua, an Iroquois word with several meanings, began in the late 1800s as an adult education movement designed to bring programs and lectures to rural areas, said Sue Hostetter, chair
of the PA Chautauqua Summer Programs Committee.
The program was created by Sunday school teacher Lewis Miller and John Heyl Vincent to train teachers and educate the middle classes, Hostetter explained, adding, “The Sunday school here is not what most of us think of today. It was an actual school that met on Sundays for children who worked the other six days of the week.” At the turn

“We’re going to be about half an hour again this year,” he said, noting that about 70% of the show is programmed electronically, while 30% is shot off manually.
Several things make Marietta Fireworks unique, he said, including the organization’s nonprofit status, its long history in the community - dating back to the late 1950s - and the nature of the show. He noted that the show includes a variety of fireworks, effects and a meticulously planned design.
“We also do something rare for a local show. We do what’s called a 360 show,” he added. “We try to be entertaining to anybody that’s out in kayaks or
boats watching, in town watching or anybody that’s east, west, north or south of us.”
Two great spots to watch the show in Marietta are War Memorial Park, 344 E. Walnut St., and Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road. The church will host a family-friendly event beginning at 4 p.m., featuring close to 20 food trucks, live music from Common Vine from 6 to 8 p.m. and kids’ activities.
Putting on the fireworks display is a labor of love for Schatz, who started creating fireworks displays with the Marietta Jaycees in the 1980s.
“It’s in my blood. It’s my passion,” he said. “I really enjoy the design, trying to
get an idea of what to put together.”
Marietta Fireworks operates with an all-volunteer committee, and Schatz noted that community support makes the event possible. Putting on an extensive fireworks display is an expensive endeavor.
“We get a lot of support from the clubs, organizations and businesses around town,” he said. “I

Gretna Music sets concert, kids’ activities
Gretna Music will present the Ulysses Quartet in concert on Sunday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will take place at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna.
Founded in 2015, the Ulysses Quartet strives to perform and promote classical music from the past and present to expand understanding of the musical arts. The quartet consists of Christina Bouey and Rhiannon Banerdt on violin, Peter Dudek playing viola, and Grace Ho on cello.
The upcoming program will feature works by woman composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Fanny Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E Minor, a string quartet by Germaine Tailleferre, and the String Quartet in B Minor by Teresa Carreño. The Ulysses Quartet will also perform “Wild Summer” by living female composer Joan
Tower.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and there will be First Listen performance at 6:45 p.m., featuring pianist Daniel Huang. First Listen programs present local youths in free mini-concerts before the mainstage concerts.
Additionally, the Ulysses Quartet will participate in two events in the kids’ music program GM4K. Both events are free and will take place in the Hall of Philosophy, 212 Gettysburg Ave., Mount Gretna.
On Saturday, June 29, at 2 p.m., “Around the World” will offer an opportunity for children to explore music from different parts of the world. Participants will be introduced to the concepts of rhythm, harmony, and style, along with string techniques, and they will learn about a variety of composers. This event is recommended for kids in grades four
through eight.
The quartet will also be featured in “Animal Friends” on Monday, July 1, at 10 a.m. Children will learn about animal sounds and characters in music from different eras using concepts of texture and stringed instrument characteristics
and techniques. This event is recommended for those in kindergarten through fourth grade.
To purchase tickets to the concert and for more information, call 717-361-1508 or visit www.gretnamusic.org.
pop, rock and funk music. On Saturday, July 6, Bunchafunk will entertain. The group plays rock, jazz and funk. Additional highlights include Mama Tried, a high-energy variety dance band, on Saturday, July 13, and the Kracker Beez, a rock and dance cover band, on Friday, Aug. 30.
Each concert will also feature food trucks. On July 5, food will be available from Brotherly Love Scratch Kitchen, Wich Way Sandwiches and Scoop O’Dough. On July 6, food will be
provided by Nano Burger, Brewster’s Bar-B-Que and Pretzel Spot Café.
Guests are also welcome to bring in their own food, Nissley said. Nissley wine will be available for purchase, along with beer from Moo-Duck Brewery.
People are also invited to bring lawn games to set up on the macadam lot, and concert-goers should bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the music. Concerts are held rain or shine unless there is substantial, sustained rain.
Summerfest concerts offer a perfect escape where rows of ripening grapes, shady woods around an old lime kiln and a stone-arch winery provide a beautiful backdrop, Nissley said.
“The venue is a perfect place to gather friends and family or create a romantic night out,” he shared. “It’s the right balance of fun and relaxing.”

of the 20th century, there were more than 200 Chautauquas across the country, with some traveling and some settled in one place.
Mount Gretna’s Chautauqua is one of about 15 that remain, she said.
While the program has changed over the decades, some things have remained consistent, including a focus on programs based on four pillars: religion, recreation, arts and culture and education.
All summer programs at the Pennsylvania Chautauqua are open to the public and funded entirely by donation. Highlights of this summer’s schedule include book reviews presented by Lebanon Valley College professors and poetry lectures with Jesse Waters of Elizabethtown College.
“There is a lecture in August on artificial intel -
ligence - its many applications in its current state, its limitations and where it might be headed,” Hostetter noted. “‘Beyond the TwoState Solution’ with international human rights lawyer Jonathan Kuttab should be an interesting talk. There are lectures on edible plants of PA, eco-gardening and biological diversity; an Agatha Christie film series; a six-part history series called ‘Decades That Transformed the Modern Western World.’ Also popular are the art lectures by Gloria Mast and nationally known artist lectures brought in by the Mount Gretna School of Art.”
Children’s programs include Kid’s Art with Kelly, kids’ yoga and Gretna Music for Kids. “The Fourth of July brings a morning bike parade and an evening patriotic concert with the

Keystone Band of Rehrersburg, back for its 64th year,” Hostetter commented.
Crafts and cuisine programs include hands-on sourdough bread making, nature drawing for beginners and copycat recipes.
Planning for the summer programming is coordinated by an all-volunteer committee that meets from November through March annually. The group focuses on the four pillars, and committee members scout lectures, exhibits, concerts, newspaper articles and books to find subjects for programs.
“Just within Mount Gretna, we have any number of talented people who willingly share their stor ies and expertise with us,” Hostetter said. “In addition, we are fortunate to have relationships with some of the four excellent colleges within a 20-mile radius of us.”

League play will be on Mondays in September, with match times between 6 and 8 p.m. The season will finish with a tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26 and 27. The fee includes the league fee, league tournaments, uniforms, and AAU insurance.

Lola Love Letter celebrates grand opening
A ribbon-cutting event was held on May 31.
Lola Love Letter, a mural painting and graphic design business founded by local artist and Elizabethtown College instructor Cecile Madonna, held a grand opening of its new creative studio on May 31. Located at 153 E. High St., Suite 102, Elizabethtown, the studio aims to become a center for creativity and community engagement.
After four years in business, Lola Love Letter is now expanding offerings to include a range of classes led by Madonna. The summer class list features opportunities for participants to explore brush lettering, cursive writing and mural painting. The cursive writing classes aim to enhance penmanship skills, and mural painting students will create a real-life mural in the studio.
