Bear Creek students compete in national invention event
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Aproject that began in a classroom in Elizabethtown brought national attention for two Bear Creek School students. Liesel Keller and Fianna Clark, both rising fourth-graders, earned a spot at the National Invention Convention, where they competed with their project, Recyclified. While the girls did not win anything at the event, held in June at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn, Mich., they rose to the challenge of presenting in front of judges and showcasing their hard work, said gifted teacher Eric Balak, who oversaw their project.
Prior to the national event, the girls competed in the Pennsylvania Invention Convention, held in Hershey in February. There, they took first place for the invention, which gamifies the act of recycling. “The goal of their invention is to promote better recycling practices/habits through gamification, making recycling into a real-world game,” Balak explained. “It consisted of a recycling bin equipped with a portable circuit board, alligator clips, conductors and connecting a USB cable - using a Makey Makey invention kit - to their Chromebook.” The girls designed
a system so that every time a student pressed a button for recycling the appropriate item, the student’s corresponding grade level earned a point, and the grade level with the most points at the end of the competition period received a reward.
Winning first place at the state competition earned the girls a spot at the national event, where 438 finalists competed out of 178,500 total participants at state competitions across the country. “During orientation, they stated that the finalists represented the top 0.25% of the inventors who participated this year,” Balak said.
Liesel’s and Fianna’s family members joined them for the trip to Michigan, where the girls presented to three judges and three other inventors, pitching their invention and answering follow-up questions.
“The girls were well prepared for this national event, having made improvements to their tri-fold display board and their opening script for their skit,” Balak said. “For being the first time participating in this event, I thought that the girls performed well, meeting most of the expectations listed on rubrics used by the judges. … They were able to answer all of the questions asked by the judges, which shows they
did their research and knew the ins and outs of their invention, including how to troubleshoot any problems.”
The girls also had an opportunity to pitch their invention to a casting call member of ABC’s “Shark Tank.” Along with
presenting their project, the girls explored the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, sitting on the actual bus Rosa Parks rode on and getting to ride in a 1925 Ford Model T. “A big part of the event was connecting with other inventors and exploring

This past school year, students from the region took the stage in a play and a musical through Encore! Home School Productions. Their performances earned them nominations in the Apollo Awards, a program that recognizes high school theater students for their achievements. An award ceremony was held in May at The Hershey Theatre, and several Encore! students took home top honors.
“From our fall play, ‘The Curious Savage,’ and our spring musical, ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ we had a total of 10 nominations, and Encore! won four awards,” said Caleb Steindel, a member of the board of directors and marketing lead for Encore! Brock Sunday won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play for Hannibal in “The Curious Savage.” Alice Tomasetti won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Play for Fairy May in “The Curious Savage,” and Encore! took home both Outstanding Play for “The Curious Savage” and Outstanding Musical for

Bringing the islands to the Lancaster Liederkranz
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Lancaster Liederkranz holds its annual Parrot Fest on Saturday, July 20, don’t expect a flock of birds. Instead, the event will feature “Margaritaville at the Liederkranz,” with food, beverages and live music providing an island vibe.
“Our first Parrot Fest was held in 2008, and one of the questions we got prior to the fest was a call from a lady looking for information on what kinds of parrots we were going to have and how many,” recalled Paul Stanavage, fest chairperson. “So of course we told her we would have Parrothead fans, not parrots, but we would be throwing an island-themed party.”
“Parrotheads” is the term for Jimmy Buffett fans, people who love Buffett’s music and the island lifestyle.
Parrot Fest will run from 5 to 11
p.m. at the Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim.
Tropical Sunz will perform from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by headlining band Jimmy and the Parrots, which will play from 7 to 11 p.m.
“They are from the New Jersey area and were a Jimmy Buffett cover band when we met them at an Oktoberfest being held at a German restaurant in center city Philly called Ludwig’s,” Stanavage recalled, adding that the experience of seeing the band at an Oktoberfest event was unusual. Stanavage and his wife run a German Schuhplattler dance group called Alpenrose, and they were hired to dance at the Oktoberfest. Due to a scheduling conflict, no German bands were available, so the cover band stepped in.
“When we got there and saw there was a Buffett band playing, we were a tad surprised, to say the

the 400-plus youth inventions throughout the venue space,” Balak said. Other inventions at the national competition included projects focused on agriculture, food, transportation, health, education, aerospace and fashion.
Participating in the national convention inspired the girls to keep going with science projects, Balak shared, noting his gratitude that the girls and their families helped to raise funds so he could attend with them.

One cent equals one vote. The three pet photos with the most votes during fair week will receive gift certificates donated by Waggin’ Wheels Pet Supply. Proceeds from the Pet Photo Contest will benefit the Elizabethtown Fair. For more information, call Gail at 717-575-3160.

me moving forward to gather ideas for next year’s event, which the girls already expressed interest in pursuing,” he said. “Whether we aim to make improvements and submit Recyclified 2.0 or invent something brand new is yet to be determined!”
Open to children from prekindergarten through eighth grade, the camp will include pottery, cooking, carpentry, and sign language. For more information, call 717-426-3758.

“The Wizard of Oz.” Additional nominations for Encore! were MaryKate Kenny for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play as Mrs. Ethel Savage in “The Curious Savage” and for Outstanding Featured Performer in a Musical as Aunt Em in “The Wizard of Oz,” Josiah Evans for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play as Titus Savage in “The Curious Savage,” Ian Riethmiller for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical as Hunk/ Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz,” Alice Tomasetti for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical as Dorothy Gale in “The Wizard of Oz” and Outstanding Dance Number in a Musical for “The Jitterbug” in “The Wizard of Oz.”
Encore! performances feature students from throughout Lancaster, Dauphin and surrounding counties. Locally, Josiah Evans lives in the Elizabethtown Area School District and “The Wizard
of Oz” featured students who live in Donegal, Columbia Borough, Lower Dauphin, Annville-Cleona, Camp Hill and West Shore school districts as well. Encore! performed “The Wizard of Oz” in March at The Junction Center in Manheim.
Participating in the Apollo Awards provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the hard work of the performers, Steindel said.
“It’s important to validate the importance of the art form and how much it brings happiness to people,” he commented. “It’s also important because these kids dedicate time and effort for a project outside of normal school hours, and it’s lots of hard, excruciating work. They need to know that there is a lasting impact with this art form that stays with people beyond curtain call.”
Steindel said the students enjoyed interacting
with other performers at the ceremony and seeing their peers recognized on stage.
“We love the Apollo Awards because they’re such a wonderful opportunity for us to meet and interact with other schools and celebrate their accomplishments,” he stated. “Encore! is grateful for these awards, but all the other schools did so
incredibly well, too. (We are) grateful to be a part of this program, grateful for the all-volunteer team that makes up Encore! and grateful to God for giving us these talents with which to perform.”

least,” Stanavage said. “But, they were really good and really entertaining. They played Buffett, and we did the German traditional stuff. We all had a great time.”
Stanavage stayed in touch with the band, and when he was looking for fundraiser ideas as then-president of the Liederkranz, he thought of Jimmy and the Parrots.
“They play a little trop-rock, Zac Brown, Bob Marley with plenty of Buffett sprinkled in,” Stanavage shared. “They tell us they love playing for us because from the first song they play ‘til the end of the night, our dance floor is packed with people dancing and having fun.”
The club’s first Parrot Fest drew more than 800 people, and after a few years, the crowd had swelled to 1,500. That was just a few too many people, Stanavage said, so organizers have capped Parrot Fest at 1,000 tickets.
Along with live music, Parrot
Fest will feature food, including hot dogs, hamburgers, “Cheeseburgers in Paradise,” pork barbecue sandwiches, jerk chicken, walking tacos, hand-cut french fries and vegan hot dogs and hamburgers. Food will be served from 5 to 9 p.m. A selection of German beers will be available on tap, along with a draft margarita wine and other beverages.
“The Lancaster Liederkranz offers a great venue just off 283 outside of Mount Joy along the scenic Chiques Creek,” Stanavage said, noting that Parrot Fest promises to be a fun evening out. “(There is) plenty of seating, a large dance floor, two great bands, food and drink.”
Stanavage encourages people to purchase tickets early for Parrot Fest. There is a discount for tickets purchased before Sunday, July 14. All tickets must be purchased in advance and may be purchased by searching for “Parrot Fest” on www .eventbrite.com.
