Elizabethtown Fair seeks queen contestants

Do you want to be the face of the Elizabethtown Fair? If you’re a young woman between the ages of 16 and 20, you’re encouraged to apply for the Elizabethtown Fair queen program.

The queen will represent the Elizabethtown Fair, which will run from Monday, Aug. 21, through Saturday, Aug. 26, this year. “She helps to promote what our fair has to offer to the community and encourage our

Car show and tour will spotlight antique cars

Hemay be only 23 years old, but Nick Sieber is an oldfashioned guy. He’s really into antique cars, and he owns several, including a 1930 Ford Model A, a 1928 Buick and a 1940 Buick.

Now he’s inviting other people to share his passion for the vehicles. He’s organizing the Stone Gables Prewar Car Show and Tour. The event will be held on Saturday, July 29, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.

“There are so many car shows that focus on cars from the 1950s or 1960s,” Sieber noted. “For folks who have pre-World War II or preWorld War I cars, there are not a lot of opportunities. I wanted to give people a chance to take their car out and enjoy it as it should be.”

Unlike other car shows, Sieber’s event is a tour, meaning participants will be able to drive their vehicles

through the roads on the property’s 275 acres, offering rides to attendees.

“People from the general public can come out for the day, ride the 1860s steam locomotive on the estate’s private railroad, enjoy some lunch, tour the Star Barn and just enjoy the grounds,” Sieber stated.

The car show and tour will highlight cars built in 1942 and earlier, and Sieber said he’s been pleasantly surprised by the response he’s gotten from participants. People are driving their antique cars from Maryland, New York and New Hampshire, among other places, and one of the cars dates to 1910.

This past year, Sieber drove his 1930 Model A to a car show in Michigan, where he networked with other car enthusiasts who are helping to spread the word about his Elizabethtown event.

Sieber noted that he’s always been into old cars, starting when he was a young boy. “My maternal grandmother was born in 1923, and

growing up, every Sunday after church, we’d go back to her house, enjoy dinner and sit and talk,” he recalled. “She would always reminisce about stories of growing up in the 1920s and 1930s. Her brothers had these old jalopies - Model Ts and Model As - and she remembered riding in the rumble seat. She talked so fondly of her childhood, I fell in love with it.”

At 16, Sieber bought his first car, a 1925 Ford Model T. “That started what you could say would be a slight obsession,” he said with a laugh.

He invites anyone with an interest in antique cars to come out to the car show and tour, noting that it will be a unique event.

“The big draw for this is that it’s a driving show,” he stated. “You’ll get to see and hear the cars running, and you might even be able to take a ride in one.”

For the past four years, Eugene Williams has been delivering smiles along with packages as a driver for FedEx - and he’s made an impression on customers along his route throughout Mount Joy and Manheim.

“He is such a happy, engaging person,” said Kathy Anderson, who regularly receives deliveries from Williams. “Eugene treats everyone special and makes us all feel like we’re his favorite customer.”

One day earlier this year, however, Kathy and her husband, Dan, noticed something about Williams. “He didn’t seem like his usual bubbly

contestants,” said Lia Swartz, fair queen program coordinator. “The queen attends events during the week such as handing out ribbons, crowning the senior king and queen, and participating in children’s games and fair auctions. Not only does the queen participate in the events during the week of the fair, but the entire court is encouraged to participate.”

Swartz, who was crowned Elizabethtown Fair queen in 2013 and state queen in 2014, said the queen competition offers more than just a crown and sash. “The competition is full of opportunity - the opportunity to learn more about the fair and the community, to make new friends and to gain new skills,” she noted. “Don’t let the fear of an area of the competition hold you back from trying. My personal experience running for fair queen opened doors for me to learn more about myself as well as introducing me to people who would change my life.”

self, so we asked him if he was OK,” Kathy recalled. “He briefly shared about his situation. He didn’t share a lot of details and wasn’t complaining, but he was clearly feeling burdened. We knew right away that we wanted to help.”

In early June, the Andersons and several of their neighbors, including Kimberly Rudis, surprised Williams with a gift of money; gift cards; a basket of snacks, drinks and treats; and homemade cards created by neighborhood kids.

Williams, who lives in Elizabethtown, said he was completely surprised by the gifts. He explained that he was going through a particularly hard time.

“The picnic has good food, good fellowship and good atmosphere,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the community picnic planning committee at Ruhl’s Church. “People can expect to have lots of fun. Our church picnic grove is a special place where people can relax and enjoy each other’s company.”

The church will hold its annual community picnic on Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. It will be held at the Ruhl’s Church Picnic Grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim.

“There will be plenty of f ood available for purchase throughout the picnic,” said Ruhl. “Early in the morning, we will begin preparing our traditional chicken corn soup, following the recipe that has been used for many generations.” Takeout soup sales will begin at 9 a.m.

A full lunch menu will also be offered, including soup, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and hot sausage sandwiches with toppings including grilled onions and peppers. “An assortment of delicious homemade desserts and beverages will also be on the menu,” Ruhl stated.

Holding the picnic is a tradition for the church members, and the event helps the church stay connected with the community, Ruhl noted. “Church picnics have been around for a long time and are considered a community social event,” she said. “(It’s) a way for people to gather together, talk and share food. Church

picnics are a great place to see old friends and make new friends.”

Ruhl’s Church will offer vacation Bible school (VBS) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 17, through Friday, July 21, with a theme of “Sky - Everything Is Possible With God.”

“Activities each evening will include praiseworthy music, Bible adventures where children experience God’s word, fun-filled games, awesome crafts and a yummy take-home snack,” said Bev Snavely, who leads the VBS planning committee with her husband, Dennis. “The last evening of VBS, Friday, will be family fun night where parents are encouraged to stay and participate. The evening will end with an ice cream social.” Children may preregister for VBS or sign up on the first night.

Additionally, the church will offer services in the grove on Sundays beginning July 9 and running through Aug. 13. Services will begin at 7 p.m.

“I’m a single dad with three kids - two girls and one boy,” he said of his children. who are ages 14 years, 9 years and 21 months. He’s also the stepfather of two children, ages 17 and 21. “After I got divorced, it really affected my financial situation. I try to hide my problems, but my friend Kathy is so observant, she noticed something was bothering me through my smile.”

Williams proudly displays the handmade cards in his delivery truck and said keeping a positive attitude has always been important to him. “I grew up really rough,” he remarked. “As a kid, I dealt with a lot of racism. In my teenage years, I dealt with a lot of gang stuff, and in my early adult years, I dealt with a lot of drug things. I overcame all of that, so that’s why I try to stay positive because I know I can beat anything if I put my mind to it.”

He said he can’t imagine doing anything other than the job he loves and the route

he cherishes. “The people on my route are great,” he stated. “They are so generous, and I’m really grateful.”

Williams is also generous. W hen he learned that someone along his route is in search of a kidney, he volunteered to donate his. The

Andersons helped him submit his paperwork, but it turned out he wasn’t a match.

“Eugene is our friend, and our heart was to just help our friend,” Kathy said of the collection to support Williams.

“Life is so busy, and we all have our struggles. But God loves when we get out of our own little worlds and become more aware of the needs of those around us and live to be part of the solution when we can.”

Williams said he hopes others will take inspiration from his story and from his outlook on life. “Try to look on the bright side, no matter what you’re going through,” he shared. “No matter what situation you’re in, look at it with happiness and love.”

The Elizabethtown Fair will run from Monday, Aug. 21, to Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, High Street, Elizabethtown. The fair will feature a variety of contests, including a Baby Photo Contest and a Pet Photo Contest. This year, a new event has been added - the Rebar Metalwork Contest.

The Baby Photo Contest, featuring photos of children age 2 or younger, has an entry deadline of noon on Saturday, Aug. 19. Photos may be dropped at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or arrangements can be made by contacting Joyce Hardman at 717-367-0119. Photos will also be accepted in the Fair

Office from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 19.

Any 5-by-7-inch or 8-by-10inch photographs are acceptable for entry; however, organizers recommend that vertical 8-by-10-inch photographs be submitted for display purposes. Photocopies will be accepted. Parents’ names, the child’s name, and the family’s address and phone number must be on the back of the photo.

Photos will be displayed throughout fair week. It is recommended that photos be picked up Aug. 26 in the Fair Office following the announcement of winners at approximately 9 p.m. on Aug. 26. Any photos not picked up at this time will be available for pickup at the GEARS Community Center. All photos must be

claimed by Friday, Sept. 8.

For voting purposes during Fair Week, one cent equals one vote. The top three winners will receive cash prizes. Proceeds from the contest will benefit the GEARS Community Center and the Elizabethtown Fair. For more information, call Hardman at the previously mentioned number.

The 27th annual Pet Photo Contest is open to all pets. To submit photos, email Gail Peters at silverdl9@aol.com or deliver the photos to the Fair Office on Aug. 19 from 9 a.m. to noon. The deadline for entry is Aug. 19.

Photos must be 5 by 7 inches or 8 by 10 inches. To ensure good visibility, vertical 8-by-10-inch photographs are recommended. Photos must fit in an 8-by-10-inch space. If more than one photo of the same pet is submitted, both photos must fit in the 8-by10-inch space. Photos may be cut to fit and stapled or taped to the display.

The owner’s name, address, and phone number, as well as the pet’s breed and name, must be on the back of the photo. Entries are limited to two per family.

Photos will be on display for voting throughout Fair

Week. Photos can be picked up on Aug. 26 at the pet photo display following the announcement of winners. Any photos not picked up at this time will available at Brandt’s Farm Supply, 601 E. High St., Elizabethtown, until Friday, Sept. 8.

One cent equals one vote. The three pet photos with the most votes during fair week will receive gift certificates donated by Waggin’ Wheels Pet Supply. Proceeds from the Pet Photo Contest will benefit the 2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue and the Elizabethtown Fair. For more information, call Gail at 717-575-3160.

No other materials may be added, and entries may not be painted. The use of clear finish, glue, and welding materials is permitted. The total weight of the entry may not exceed 8 pounds.

Entries will only be received at the Fair Office on Aug. 19 from 9 a.m. to noon. There is a nominal entry fee. For more details, call Matt at 717-580-5409.

Lesley was one of 10 children - seven boys and three girls - of the late Jessie and Harry F. McCurdy Sr. He spent his infancy and youth in the Haldeman Mansion, where the

family lived for many years. He and four of his brothers served in the U.S. Army.

Lesley and Doris L. Tyson are the last surviving siblings. Lesley resides with his daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Brandon Fisher, in Mount Joy.

The birthday party was arranged by post commander James Hanley and post office manager Paige Fries.

Fair queen frompg 1

Components of the fair queen competition include a written essay of 300 words or fewer on the topic of “What My Fair Means to My Community,” as well as a personal interview, a threeto five-minute speech on the topic of “Why You Should Come to My Fair” and answering an impromptu question. Traditionally, part of the competition, including the crowning of the winner, takes place on the opening night of the Elizabethtown Fair.

The fair queen and the alternate will be awarded premiums in the form of scholarships for higher education. The fair queen will reign for one year and will participate in the Pennsylvania State Fair Queen Competition to be held in Hershey in January of 2024.

Swartz emphasized that she works with the contestants on

skills to help them succeed, and she noted that the program has developed a “Queen’s Closet” for any contestant who needs business or formalwear for the competition.

“This is a scholarship program, but it also offers so much in the ways of selfdevelopment,” Swartz stated. “Even if you do not win the title of queen the first time you run, there is so much still to gain from participating.”

The deadline to submit an application for fair queen is Monday, July 10. For more information, including an application and complete contest details, visit www.etown fair.com and choose the “Contests” tab. Information may also be found by following the Elizabethtown Fair Queen Program on Facebook or by emailing etownfairqueen@gmail.com.

Meeting planned to discuss quarry

A public meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, at 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy, to inform neighbors of the Rheems Quarry about the quarry’s expansion. During the drop-in gathering, neighbors may ask questions and sign a document containing comments about the expansion; this document will be sent to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

The comments were drafted by a federal environmental manager who lives near the quarry and is concerned about issues related to well water, sinkholes, PFAS and other topics. Signing the document does not prevent individual residents from submitting their own comments to the DEP by the Friday, July 14, deadline.

The document may be viewed and downloaded at http:// tinyurl.com/rheemsquarry.

Community improvement grants awarded

The Giant Company, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, recently announced the 23 recipients of its 2023 Healing the Planet program. The grants were awarded in support of projects that address food waste prevention, reduction and recovery across the Giant Company’s operating area. The recipients were named at an event held on June 22 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, which received $20,000 to complete an anaerobic digester project for conversion of community food waste

and dairy manure into biogas and grid-tied electricity.

Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000. Projects located in the Giant Company’s operating areas within Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia were eligible. Funding for the grants was provided by customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores who rounded up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar from March through May, benefiting program partners such as the Rodale Institute and Planet Bee Foundation.

The following local Pennsylvania organizations are the recipients of 2023 Healing the Planet grants: City of Lancaster, Lancaster Compost Co-Op; Creative Community Grow, Harrisburg; Horn Farm Center f or Agricultural Education, York; and York Fresh Food Farms.

All funded projects address food waste prevention, reduction and or recovery and can include community composting, increased access to compost for agricultural producers, educational programs regarding food waste prevention,

reduction and recovery, and diversion of food waste from landfills. Community gardens are eligible for funding but must have a food waste prevention, reduction or recovery component, such as education.

Since 2021, the Healing the Planet program has awarded grants to 110 recipients for projects connecting communities to green spaces and improving or helping to protect local waterways and water resources.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has supported community

improvement initiatives and encouraged community leadership, responsibility and a respect for the environment since 1990. Art Alley to showcase art, offer activities

The Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design will return as a partner with the City of Lancaster to program free, make-and-go, experiential offerings as well as creative experiences for people of all ages in the newly branded Art Alley. Activities will be available on First Fridays, July 7, Aug. 4, Sept. 1, and Oct. 6.

The Art Alley is located at William Henry Place between the Lancaster City Welcome Center and Lancaster Central Market. The mission of Art Alley is to extend the First Friday experience beyond observation and into participation, and CCE will involve creative partners such as the Demuth Foundation and the Lancaster Creative Factory.

The Art Alley also seeks to create space for artists of all kinds to showcase and sell their work and talk with the wider community. Art Alley will add to the existing opportunities to do so, such as brickand-mortar storefronts, traditional gallery spaces, and popup opportunities.

Artists interested in vending at Art Alley on First Fridays may visit https://tinyurl.com /lancasterartists.
