Elizabethtown

Threads & Treads will support local students

At a gathering in Elizabethtown last year, a group of friends began brainstorming ways to help the community. “I did some research, because I’m not originally from Elizabethtown, and I realized E-town is known for candy and shoes,” recalled Nadinne Ziegler. “I asked a friend, ‘Do you think shoes would be needed for people in the community?’” She connected with Jenn Fields, a social worker for Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD), and learned clothing was needed, too.

From there, Ziegler assembled

a group of volunteers from her church to organize Threads & Treads. The event will be held at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, on Saturday, July 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities at Threads & Treads will include food, music by DJ Jimmy Jamm, a dunk tank featuring local celebrities, a bounce house, giveaway baskets, a bake sale, balloon art and face painting.

“We’re going to have mini cheerleading clinics by the girls’ cheer squad at Elizabethtown High School,” Ziegler said. “We’re also going to have lots of lawn games like cornhole and some

larger-size lawn games as well.”

Three food vendors will be on-site, said committee member Linda Munafo. “We reached out to local churches,” she stated. “We’re very lucky here in E-town to have several churches with their own traveling food trucks. We have the St. Peter’s Catholic Church Fryers coming. We also have Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church with their rolling root beer truck. One of our members will be here with the Philly Cheesesteak Co. on the Roll.” Popcorn and baked goods with also be for sale.

Proceeds from the event will go into a fund the church has

A passion for science

Looking at the title of Ella Stricker’s science fair project, it’s hard not to be impressed. Ella, a rising senior at Elizabethtown Area High School, entered a project called “Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) Production in Bacteria: A Sustainable Approach to

Eco-Friendly Plastics” in the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair this spring. The judges were impressed with much more than the title, and Ella took home the Overall Grand Champion Award. Winning that honor entitled Ella to an entry in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which

Head to Paramount Senior Living, 2760 Maytown Road, Maytown, on Wednesday, July 17, for a car show to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

Registration will begin at 5 p.m., and the event will start at 6 p.m.

“We love to host community events where the whole family can come out to do something fun together,” said Cindy Wivell, marketing manager for Paramount Senior Living. “Paramount has held car shows here

in the past, but this will be the first one in a long time.”

Any type of car is eligible to participate in the show. “This event is for the enjoyment of our residents that were primarily born in the late ’20s to the ’40s, so antiques will be appreciated by many of them,” Wivell shared. “However, the more cars that enter, the more enjoyable the event will be for everyone. We are offering trophies and bragging rights for Best Car, Best Truck, Best Paint, Resident Choice and People’s Choice.”

was held in Los Angeles in May.

Ella, the daughter of Brian and Carrie Stricker of Elizabethtown, has loved science since she was a little girl.

“Science has always been a passion of mine since I can remember,” she said. “Learning about the animal kingdoms, space, the functions of plants and the atmosphere has always fascinated me.”

Once she got to high school, Ella took a deeper dive into science through a course called Competition Science 1.“This class entailed entering into various science competitions, like Science Olympiads, and conducting a research project to enter at the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair,” she stated.

waste products to produce more PHB, but at a significantly lower cost.”

Entering the North Museum fair, she wasn’t sure how her project would be received. “I didn’t dream that my project would make it far. I was extremely proud of my hard work, but I didn’t imagine that I would win Overall Grand Champion,” she recalled. “When I heard my name called, I was beyond excited.”

Ella traveled to Los Angeles with her mentor, Elizabethtown Area High School teacher Theresa Swenson. She spent the week participating in student mixers, networking meetings, judging sessions and sightseeing.

This past school year, Ella discovered the science behind sustainable bioplastics, which led to her project. The project studied a type of bioplastic - a plastic that occurs naturally in nature - that is produced by a strain of bacteria that lives in dirt.

“It is an extremely promising alternative to the harmful petrochemical plastics we see today, for it is fully biodegradable and has similar physical properties to modern-day plastics,” she explained. “With all of these advantages, we do not see this sustainable substitution of plastic today because of its high production costs. In my project, I utilized agro-industrial

“There were over 70 countries represented, with 1,600 finalists competing,” Ella said, describing the event as the best week of her life. “I met so many amazing people from all over the world. The best part was that we all had a deep passion for science.”

When judging day came, Ella was nervous but also excited to share her project. “All of the judges were high-level scientists in the field of study that I wish to work in, so I was inspired to meet them,” she said. “While I did not end up placing in my category, I made lifetime memories and met many new friends. ISEF and all of the other finalists inspire me to continue working hard and pursue a future career in science.”

Ella noted that scientific research is her passion. “I love diving deep into niche topics and trying to break the boundaries of the ‘known,’” she shared. “ISEF and the North Museum created an environment for me to do so and allowed me to realize that nothing is impossible.”

created to pay for shoes and clothing needed by EASD students. Along with sales of food and basket giveaway tickets, money has been raised through donations from local businesses and event sponsors. The event’s platinum sponsors are DDMP Investment Advisors and Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. The gold sponsor is Vision Source Signature Eye Care.

When staff members at EASD schools see a need for shoes or clothing for students, they will contact Christ Church, where money from the fund will be used to purchase items.

Joining Ziegler, Munafo and Fields on the Threads & Treads committee are Diane Kretzing, Don Martin, Dave Andrick and Barb Reeser.

Putting the event together and working with Fields has been an eye-opening experience, Munafo said. “We really did not know the depth of the need in this community,” she shared. “It was kind of stunning to hear that a little over 40% of people in the school district are living below the federal poverty line.”

Ziegler said the committee hopes to make Threads & Treads an annual

event. “To know that there were that many kids who need that much, it surprised us,” Ziegler said. “We know that there are clothing banks available, but they are not always accessible to students during the day or to their parents. The school support staff and teachers see the need firsthand, and they’ll get in contact with us. … We are touching a need in the community.”
