“Follies” Looks Back At The Past BY CATHY MOLITORIS

If you had a chance to relive the past, would you take it? That’s the question at the center of “Follies,” which will be performed at Susquehanna Stage from Friday, July 23, through Sunday, Aug. 1. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “Follies” reunites

performers from a musical revue that ran between World War I and World War II until closing in 1941. “The theater where the Follies were is being torn down,” said Sharon Boyer, who portrays Heidi Schiller in the show and is also the vocal director. “The characters come together 30 years after the last Follies, in 1971, to reminisce.” See “Follies” pg 4

Eric Schubert, talking on the phone with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, has been recognized for his genetic genealogy work.

Solving Genetic Mysteries hen Eric Schubert was about 10 years old, his mom gave him a DNA test kit. She thought it would keep her son entertained for a few days, but Schubert had other ideas. Ten years later, the rising junior at Elizabethtown College is still into DNA, and it’s become much more than a hobby. Schubert, 20, uses genetic genealogy to solve crimes, among other applications. “Investigative genetic genealogy is revolutionizing cold cases and crime scenes, but it is still a relatively unknown piece of new technology,” said Schubert. Genetic genealogy uses DNA and other genealogical methods to connect biological relationships between people. Locally, the type of work

from high school, in 2019, The Philadelphia Inquirer published an article about Schubert and his genetics work. Detectives in Montgomery County saw the article and contacted him for help with a criminal case that had grown cold. “It took me about two weeks to solve the case,” he said, noting that he got the case the day before he left for college, but didn’t sit down to work on it until he came home to Medford Lakes, N.J., on a school break. Since then, he’s been contacted about helping with other crimes and currently has about half a dozen cases he’s working on. At Elizabethtown College, Schubert is majoring in history and political science, and he says he sees genealogy as being more of a side job than a career.

Northwest Emergency Medical Services (EMS) recently awarded two scholarships to graduating seniors at Manheim Central High School. Audrey Miller and Jenna Wagner were awarded the Robert C. Stirling Scholarship, named in honor of Bob Stirling. Stirling was an active member of the Manheim community, including the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association, which merged

Schubert does has been used to solve cases including the murder of Christy Mirack. Schubert didn’t jump into crime solving immediately. After his initial introduction to genealogy, he started offering traditional services, including helping adoptees locate biological parents or assisting with building family trees. Soon, however, people began asking him to help with more complex DNA puzzles. “I really started mastering genetic genealogy,” he stated, noting that he knew the science was beginning to be used to solve cold cases but that he didn’t expect to get involved in that work. “I thought, no one is going to come to a 17-year-old and say, ‘Hey, can you help us solve this murder?’” he recalled, “but then it did happen.” The week he graduated

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) held its annual Chopped Competition virtually in March as part of National Nutrition Month. Winners were selected in eight categories. Among the winners are Darlene Colon and Capt. Michael Buzzard of Lancaster Salvation Army. The top two recipes were chosen from each category based on ease of preparation, presentation, and creative use of ingredients. Colon and Buzzard were the runner-up in the Main Entrée division with their Spaghetti Squash Burrito Bowls recipe. The annual Chopped Competition is a way for the CPFB’s partner agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, and more, to share resources and best practices for nutrition education and wellness that they can pass to the neighbors they serve on the local level. For this year’s virtual competition, partners were asked to make a healthy recipe using squash, ham steak, and beans. Bonus points were awarded if a participant used more than one of the healthy ingredients in each recipe. A recipe booklet can be found at www.centralpafood bank.org under Latest Food Bank News at the bottom of the homepage.

with preconceived notions of who people were or what you thought you would be or who you would become, but now maybe your life hasn’t turned out the way you thought it would.” Lindsay Bretz-Morgan, who plays Sally in the show, said the musical doesn’t have a typical happy ending or saccharine sweetness to it. “The characters in this show are very relatable,” she stated. “These are people who are going through life, but they are not truly happy. They’re just going with the flow of life and where it takes them, and I think a lot of people can relate to that.” Mike Kohler, who portrays Ben, said “Follies” isn’t performed often because it’s a technically challenging show. “The music is hard, the lyrics are hard, the costumes are elaborate and there’s a lot of different styles of dance in the show,” he noted. Gagliano said that despite the challenges of putting on “Follies,” the result is well worth it. “The music is fabulous, the costumes are incredible, and the dancing is great,” she stated. “It’s just an allaround wonderful show.” “Follies” celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Broadway debut this year, and Susquehanna Stage will hold a special event, “Follies at 50,” on opening night, July 23. The event will feature a wine and cheese social before the performance and a catered event after the show. For more information or to purchase tickets to “Follies,” visit www.susquehanna stage.com.

The show focuses on two couples - Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone. The two women were showgirls in the Follies and, despite their outwardly successful lives, all four people are fundamentally unhappy. The cast features young adults who portray various Follies performers in their younger years. “They are sort of ghosts on stage, playing the performers from the past,” explained choreographer Jill Gagliano. “They are onstage, but they don’t really interact with the current-day characters.” “Follies” is a bittersweet show, said Lorraine Ford, who portrays Phyllis. “The show is a really interesting exploration of life,” she stated. “Wouldn’t you like to look back and watch a movie of your life and see, as a mature adult, how the decisions you made as a 21-yearold are affecting you now?” Gagliano noted that audience members may seem themselves in the characters. “Think about going to your high school reunion,” she remarked. “You might go in

MUSSER’S TREE SERVICE

While a church picnic has been a tradition at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church for more than 100 years, the pandemic has caused the congregation to rethink its plans. The church had to cancel its picnic both last year and this year, but church members still wanted to serve the community, so they decided to offer their popular chicken corn soup to go. The soup will be available for pickup on Saturday, July 17, at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim. Soup will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out. “It’s our traditional recipe we’ve used at our church since we started having picnics,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the picnic committee. “People can bring their own containers, but we’ll also have prepackaged containers of soup in quarts.” Ruhl has been involved in making the soup for decades. “I was taught how to make the rivels, and I’ve done that for the last 30 years,” she stated, adding that her husband and daughters help out, as well. The committee cooks and prepares the chicken on

the Thursday before the sale, and the sale day is a very early morning for the crew. “We start about 5:30 a.m.,” Ruhl explained., and it’s a good thing they do, because people begin lining up early in the morning to get their soup, she noted. It also takes a village to serve soup to the community. “The soup sale is a church effort,” Ruhl remarked. “Many volunteers get together to help and make this happen.” The church members hope to bring back the picnic next year, which typically includes a full day of music, games and fellowship, but they felt the soup sale was a way to ease back into community outreach. “ We wanted to serve our community in a way that everyone would feel comfortable,” Ruhl said. “Lots of people come every year, and we wanted to be there for them.” Proceeds from the soup sale are used to maintain the picnic grove, where the church will hold services on six Sundays in July and August. For more information on the soup sale or church services, call the church at 717-665-3400 or visit www.ruhlschurch.org.

Wagner is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. “She stood out to us because during her high school career she dual enrolled in the college in the high school program, allowing her to complete six college credits,” Shenk stated. “Additionally, her application indicated that she has already taken steps to pursue her chosen degree by arranging shadow experiences at Penn Medicine/Lancaster General Hospital ICU and through a mentoring program facilitated by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce.” In school, Wagner participated in Spanish Club, marching band, jazz band, Tri-County Music Honor Society, Lititz Community Band, quiz bowl and the medical careers club. She also volunteers with her youth group. Northwest EMS is based in Elizabethtown, but has stations in Maytown, Manheim and Brickerville.

with Northwest EMS in 2013. The scholarship is awarded to residents of the Manheim Central community who are pursuing a degree in the medical field. Miller will attend Penn State Mont Alto campus in the fall and plans to become a physical therapist assistant. “She stood out to us because of her academic and athletic achievements, both on the school soccer team and on a community league soccer team, as well as her volunteer work in the community,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. At school, Miller was a co-adviser of the Interact Service Club and a member of the book club, the Spanish Club, the pingpong club and Student Council. She volunteers at the Water Street Mission and at her church, Salem United Methodist Church, where she serves and prepares meals and works in the church library. She also helped to organize and run the Elementary School Festival.

“Behind Fences: A Prison Chaplain’s Story,” a 284-page book with its roots in Lancaster County, was released in early June by author Esther Zeiset, who resides near Newmanstown. The book is about Esther’s husband, Nelson, and his 33-year career in prison chaplaincy. The Zeisets will hold a book signing event on Friday, July 23, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Tin Roof Cafe n’ Sweets, 108 N. Reading Road, Ephrata. Nelson sensed a call to prison ministry as a 12-yearold Mennonite boy. From that day in 1973, he ordered his life to fulfill the purpose of taking the Gospel message of hope and redemption to prisons. Readers of Esther’s book will learn of God’s faithfulness

through the 1980s AIDS epidemic, the Camp Hill prison riot, lawsuits and an inmate’s calculated scheme against Nelson, and of a prison church’s growth and crumbling racial walls. “Behind Fences” urges the reader to discover and pursue his or her own life calling and to view God’s faithfulness on that journey. The author interspersed her own perspectives as the Zeisets’ family life intersected with Nelson’s ministry. She has published inspirational articles, devotions, and fiction in The Secret Place, The Upper Room, Power for Living, War Cry and varied local publications. “Behind Fences” is available through Masthof Press, on Amazon and at local retailers.

She resides with her parents but has many uncles and aunts all around campus. The students all love her sassy ways. Her favorite place to be is with the frat boys when they are playing games. For their win, Lyra and Peggy will receive a $50 gift card to Stoltzfus Feed & Supply in Gap.

Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will bring “Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” back to its stage on Thursday, Aug. 5, after closing its previous run at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The return of the show will also mark the theater’s first show operating at 100% capacity after more than a year of following the state mandates that had been in place from COVID-19. “Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” will play at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Aug. 5 through Saturday, Sept. 4. This is a new musical adaptation of the 1993 Warner Bros. film about two aging neighbors who have been feuding most of their lives. The two grumpy retirees, whose verbal and sometimes physical altercations date back to their high school days, peak in rivalry when a beautiful, eccentric and charming woman moves into the neighborhood. Back to reprise their lead roles is Luther Charkurian as John Gustafson, a retired history teacher and neighbor to retired TV repairman Max Goldman, played by Rob Summers. Ariel Truax, a college professor, is played by Miranda Jane. A range of adult dinner and show ticket prices are currently available. The show is rated PG-13 due to some adult humor. Group pricing is available for groups of 16 or more. Tickets can be reserved by calling 717-898-1900, visiting www.DutchApple.com or stopping at the box office at 510 Centerville Road in Lancaster.
