Rissers Mennonite Church will host community picnic
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Fun, fellowship and food will be the focus of the annual community picnic hosted by Rissers Mennonite Church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown. The picnic will be held on Saturday, July 27, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The event will start with a meal featuring chicken from Peters’ BBQ, said Arlene Heistand, connections/outreach committee chairperson.
The theme of the picnic is “Community Helpers,” and picnic activities will reflect that topic. At 6 p.m., first responders will be on-site to greet guests.
“There will be various emergency and other vehicles on display to view and for an opportunity to
learn more about these helpers,” Heistand commented.
The picnic will include additional activities for people of all ages. A bounce house will be set up, along with face painting and yard games. Both children and adults are invited to participate in bingo games as well.
All food and activities at the picnic are provided free of charge. With a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, the picnic helps members of the congregation reach out and connect with the greater community, Heistand shared, noting that the church members emphasize the importance of community relationships. Hosting a community picnic is a time-honored tradition at Rissers Mennonite Church, with some families returning year after year
for the festivities.
People should bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the picnic, and everyone is welcome, Heistand said, adding that organizers hope to see familiar faces from past picnics as well as newcomers.
“We enjoy the opportunity to invite our neighbors to this picnic,” she stated. “Hopefully, there is a chance for many to meet a new friend.”
Rissers Mennonite Church holds services on Sundays beginning at 9 a.m. with Sunday school for adults and children, followed by worship at 10 a.m. In addition to the picnic, the church holds other community-focused events throughout the year and hosts Bible2School classes for children in grades two and three during the school year.

Toys for Tots’ Touch-A-Truck is vehicle for enhancing young lives
BY JEFF FALK
Lancaster Toys for Tots continues to do amazing things in our community. But it’s work that can’t be done alone, or without the support of many generous donors.
Lancaster Toys for Tots’ latest venture, Touch-A-Truck Family Day, looks to build off that altruistic spirit and take the organization’s work to a whole different level.
“We’re helping kids in Lancaster County, and there’s a big need in Lancaster County,” said Gil Bixler, Lancaster Toys for Tots’ coordinator for the last 37 years. “I’ve got a fantastic team of volunteers who just enjoy doing it. That’s what it takes to make it all happen. They work harder than I do.”
Associated with the United States Marine Corps Reserve, Lancaster Toys for Tots’ Touch-ATruck Family Day is a brand-new,

kid-friendly event. It will be held outdoors at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster, near Tires Plus, on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event is free to attend, but families are encouraged to donate a new, unwrapped toy. It is also being used as a way to draw attention to autism.
“Park City came to us and said, ‘What do you think of this idea?’” said Bixler. “We thought it was great. The goal is to create awareness and supply toys for autism groups. Autism is more prevalent than you and I know. We want to get the public more aware of the needs of these children.”
On hand that day will be nearly 100 vehicles - cop cars, fire trucks, emergency medical services vehicles and tow trucks - as well as a LifeLion helicopter and a state police helicopter. Many members and representatives of police departments from Lancaster County townships and Lancaster County’s first responders will be present.
Touch-A-Truck Family Day will also include food trucks.
“I perceive it being a growing event every year,” said Bixler, himself a retired Marine. “It’ll be a lot of families, a lot of kids, a lot of fun. The state police will show the kids their helicopter. They can climb all over the fire trucks. And they can get in the cop cars and the officers will explain what they do.”
Lancaster Toys for Tots also raises funds for its annual Christmas toy drive for local underprivileged children by conducting a golf outing at Overlook Golf Course in May, by hosting car shows in the spring and fall and through a motorcycle ride in October.
In 2023, Lancaster Toys for Tots distributed 63,523 toys and supported 15,138 children, mostly from Lancaster County. Those toys were provided through monetary donations to Lancaster Toys for Tots and through 7,000 collection bins placed throughout the county.
Founded in 1947 by the United State Marine Corps Reserve, Toys for Tots is a national organization with more than 800 chapters.
The Lancaster chapter of Toys for Tots began in 1987 with veterans distributing new toys from the trunk of a car. For additional information on Lancaster Toys for Tots, go to https://lancaster -pa.toysfortots.org.
“It’s helping us and it’s great (public relations) for them,” said Bixler of the public servants.
Up to 500 people are expected to attend.
Lancaster Toys for Tots’
“Through those donations, we support 56 other organizations,” said Bixler. “Where else can you help so many children at one time? I meet so many wonderful people in this position. I really enjoy it.”

Child heatstroke prevention tips
As the weather gets warmer, the Municipal Emergency Services Authority of Lancaster County (MESA) reminds parents and caregivers to not leave children in hot cars. Vehicle-related heatstroke is one of the leading causes of non-crash, vehicle-related death for children age 14 and younger in the United States.
degrees warmer than outside air temperatures.
So even if it is a cool day outside, a vehicle may still pose a threat to a child.
A busy parent or caregiver may unintentionally forget that a quiet or sleeping child is in the back of the vehicle. These deaths can even occur at home.
Internal vehicle temperatures can rise quickly and become up to 50
A child’s body temperature increases three to five times faster than an adult’s.
Parents and caregivers should form a habit of looking in the back seat every time they get out of a car. They should never leave a child in a vehicle unattended, even for a minute, and they should always lock the car and put the keys out of reach of children.
Warning signs of heatstroke include red, hot, and moist or dry skin; no
sweating; a strong, rapid pulse or a slow, weak pulse; nausea; confusion; or strange behavior. If a child exhibits any of these signs after being in a hot vehicle, the caregiver should call 911 or a local emergency number immediately. They should also quickly spray the child with cool water or with a garden hose. They should never put a child in an ice bath.
MESA provides 911 emergency medical services previously provided by Northwest EMS to member municipalities in northwest Lancaster County. More information is available at www.mesalancasterpa.gov.

At the upcoming fairs, they will present covers of songs by a variety of artists, including Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton. Sponsorship is provided by Tim McGowan, owner of Tim McGowan Studio in Myerstown.

Changing lives through Second Grace
Malone Remodeling
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
There is power in mentorship, and positive things can come out of one-on-one mentoring relationships. That’s the message behind Second Grace, a Mount Joybased organization that pairs young single mothers - “Graces” - with trained advocates called “Sages.” Candace Abel created Second Grace in 2021, and the program is expanding. A new program coordinator has been hired, and more mothers will soon receive services.
As the new program coordinator, Juanita Smith brings with her a background that includes working for a private foster care agency as well as working with individuals with mental health and substance use disorders.
“We have contracted with Healthy Beginnings Plus and Lancaster Children and Youth for referrals of young mothers between the ages of 18 and 25 who could use extra support,” Smith shared. “We have received multiple referrals and are in need of more Sage mentors to train and be paired with these young women.”
Sage mentors receive approximately 30 hours of training prior to matching with a Grace. “This training includes¬†topics of trauma, Sage roles and responsibilities, communication methods and styles, substance use disorder, mental health, child welfare, mandated reporter and confidentiality,” Smith stated. “We then offer ongoing training and connection meetings monthly for active Sages.”
move into new apartments and helped with child care while they unpacked.”
Smith said Second Grace focuses on being proactive rather than reactive. “Second Grace and its volunteers are on the front end, proactively engaging with families to prevent or eliminate child welfare involvement and to empower young mothers to believe in themselves, achieve their goals and surpass all they thought they were capable of accomplishing,” she said.
Under Smith’s guidance, Second Grace is hoping to expand its volunteer roster to serve more mothers.
Sages have a variety of roles within Second Grace. “They are first and foremost positive, encouraging connections for the Grace they pair with,” Smith remarked. “Aside from that, they may provide transportation to appointments, a job or the grocery store. They can help connect their Grace to community services like food banks, WIC or GED classes. They may go to the park or just spend time visiting for social connection. Recently, we helped a couple young women
A good Second Grace volunteer is a woman who has compassion and empathy for young mothers and who is eager and willing to be an emotional and physical support, Smith said. “We ask for a two-year commitment of six to 10 hours each month, to allow for the building and establishing of a relationship between Sage and Grace,” she said.
Volunteers are also needed in other roles, including men and women who can assist with fundraising, marketing and social media; physical labor such as moving furniture; transportation; office help; serving on the board and more. “If someone has a passion to serve these

young women and their children, we would love to partner with them and find a way for them to be involved,” Smith said.
Volunteering with Second Grace is an opportunity to change the trajectory of a mother’s and a child’s life, she said. “When we can meet the physical and emotional needs of an individual while building a trusting relationship, the future of the family will effectively be changed for the better,” she noted. “I cannot think of a better way to spend a few hours a month than to pour it into building a relationship that will literally change someone’s future.”

allure of screentime and gaming,” said Steven Courtney, who wrote the show. “I find it interesting to observe the youthful cast as they ‘pretend’ to bring this ‘play’ to life through their hard work yet willing spirits. Collectively, there are so many elements of teamwork, collaboration and planning to produce this playful, upbeat show with a rather serious undertone. More and more studies are showing the addictive power of devices.”
Courtney, who is the producer, songwriter and playwright of the show through Sun Hill Productions, worked in partnership with Kami Deppen of Big Dream Players, who is directing the show and served as costumer and set designer. The pair held auditions earlier this year for local youths to record the musical’s soundtrack.

from pg 5
Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization founded in 2020, HARTZ PT spends an average of 50 volunteer hours and contributes more than $1,000 per employee in support of local charities each year. To date the company has raised more than $350,000 by planning various charitable events, including an April food drive
“The recording of the soundtrack demo was super fun, and it went as good as we could have hoped,” Courtney recalled. “We used the demo versions of the songs to share with the cast. After the cast selection process, we provided the soundtrack for actors to rehearse with prior to our official rehearsals. The instrumental parts of the soundtrack will be used in the live show, and the cast will sing live vocals for the performance.”
The cast of “When We Climb Trees” is primarily youths ages 10 to 16 from Lancaster and York counties.
This is the first youth musical Courtney, a singer-songwriter, has written, but he knows it won’t be his last.
“I am presently developing a new musical themed around my song ‘Steven

the Pirate,’” he shared. “I’m having a blast exploring the options for the storyline. There are a few other ideas in the vault as well. I do think I’ll stay in the ‘youth musical’ lane for moving forward.”
He hopes audiences will enjoy “When We Climb Trees,” noting that it will be performed in Landis Hall, a state-of-the-art production theater at the Junction Center.
“This show is all-ages friendly and will run around 65 minutes,” he said. “Bring

“The vision behind what we’re doing is to bring various service organizations together to do something for the community,” said Linda Eberly, who is on the committee organizing the Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine event. “This event is the perfect

for that, no pun intended.”
The Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine will be held on Saturday, July 27, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. along Main Street from New Haven Street to Jacob Street. It will feature a car show with about 40 awards presented by various businesses, clubs and organizations, including Kinley Automotive Group/Whitmoyer and Marietta Notary, the major sponsors of the event. Additional sponsors include Lime Ridge Auto Sales, Member’s 1st Federal Credit Union and State Farm (Greg Sallade & Tyler Parmer), as well as Drohan Brick & Supply, The Gathering Place, Guardian Barrier Services, Sheetz Funeral Home and Thru-It-All Body Shop.
A Best of Show award will be sponsored by the event organizers, and five memorial awards will also be presented. The awards ceremony will take place at
1:30 p.m. at the event tent near Market Street.
The first 250 people to register their vehicles will receive a dash plaque featuring last year’s Best of Show winner, a 1958 Super 88 Oldsmobile owned by Terry Albright.
“We had more than 350 cars participate last year,” Eberly said. “So, this year, we expanded the show area to accommodate a large number of cars.”
Mount Joy has hosted the annual car show for more than 20 years. For a few years, Main Street Mount Joy took over the car show, but when that organization disbanded, volunteers from various community service groups stepped up to continue the tradition. Members of the Mount Joy Rotary, Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems, Mount Joy Lions Club, Voyage Mount Joy and the Red Rose Antique Auto Car Club are working together to host the event.
Along with vehicles, the event will feature food from area restaurants and food trucks. A food court will be set up on Main and Delta streets. Participating food vendors include Bube’s Brewery, Florin Church of the Brethren, Harvey’s Main Street BBQ, Isaac’s Craft Kitchen
cannot yet walk.
A parent or guardian and one other adult chaperone must escort the baby to the race mat. One adult chaperone will be positioned at each end of the mat, and the chaperones may use toys, bottles, binkies, and other items to help encourage the baby to crawl. The adults may not move or reach beyond their designated area during the race.
The baby who crawls from one side of the mat to the other the fastest will receive a cash prize. If no babies have crossed the finish line after 3 minutes, the baby who is closest to the finish line will be declared the winner. Babies who walk at any time during the race will be disqualified.
In addition to the race, competitors may participate in a costume contest with the theme “Barnyard Animals.” A panel of judges will evaluate the entrants based on creativity, adherence to theme, and overall presentation to choose the winner, who will receive a gift certificate to Carter’s.
To register, email the completed entry form to elizabethtownkiwanis@ gmail.com. Registrations will also be accepted in the Fair Office on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon. Walk-up registration will only be available if space permits.
For more information, call Cortney at 570-412-3336.
The annual Talent Show will be held on Aug. 20 at 6:30 p.m. on the Kiwanis Stage. The contest is open to any amateur from the greater Elizabethtown area. No full bands are eligible to compete. The contest will have four divisions: Adult Amateurs, Youth Amateurs (up to and including age 18), Lip Sync, and Itty Bitty (under age 10).
Any type of talent is acceptable. Contestants will perform a two- to three-minute act. Each presentation must be fully staged with costumes, props, dancing, and so on as appropriate. All contestants must supply their own CD for the song or dance to be performed. All lyrics and music will be used at the discretion of the contest officials.
No profanity or inappropriate actions or dress will be permitted. If an act is deemed inappropriate, the performance will be terminated immediately. Judging criteria will include musical ability (when applicable), choreography (when applicable), costuming, originality and creativity, stage presentation, effectiveness, and overall presentation. The decision of the judges is final. The top three winners will receive prize money. Entry forms may be

The Kiwanis Club will host a free pancake breakfast prior to the event at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 37 E. Main St., Mount Joy, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mount Joy restaurants, including Beanie’s Bar & Grill, Copper Cup and Joy’s Tavern, will offer specials during the day.
Eberly invites the community to come out for the car show, whether people want to enter a vehicle, peruse the cars or chow
obtained from Gina Mariani or in the Elizabethtown Fair Premium Book. All entries and entry fees must be mailed to Mariani. Entries will also be accepted at the Fair Office on Aug. 17 between 9 a.m. and noon. For an entry form or additional information, contact Mariani at 717-278-8484.
The annual essay contest and poetry contest will again be held as part of the Elizabethtown Fair. Both an original essay and an original poem may be titled “Why I Like the Elizabethtown Fair” or any other title relating to the Elizabethtown Fair.
The essay may be handwritten or typed. It may not exceed one page typed or two pages written and must be neat and legible. Judging will be based on clarity of expression, content, creativity, grammar, and organization.
The poem may not exceed two pages in length. It must be neat and legible but may be handwritten or typed. Judging will be based on clarity of expression, content, and creativity. Both contests are open to students in grades one to 12 and adults. There will be age divisions for judging. Prize money and ribbons will be awarded for five placings in each age division.
A cover sheet listing the
entrant’s name, address, phone number, and grade just completed or adult must accompany the essay and/or poem. Names should be on the cover sheet and not on the poem or essay. Entries are to be submitted in a page protector.
Essay and poetry exhibits may be picked up on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church.
A drug awareness poster contest will be open to students in kindergarten through grade eight. All posters must be on 11-by-14-inch poster board and must be done in dark pens, markers, or crayons. Posters must be neat and legible and will be judged on content and appearance. The creator’s name, address, and phone number should be noted on the back of the poster. There will be five age divisions for judging purposes, and ribbons and prize money will be awarded to five places in each division. Essay, poetry, and poster submissions will be received at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., on Aug. 19 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Entries will be displayed throughout the week.
For more information about the drug awareness poster contest, call Sally at 717-653-5985.
