“Double Dare” host will entertain in

Inthe late 1980s and early 1990s, if you turned on Nickelodeon, chances are you could see contestants on the game show “Double Dare” competing to run an obstacle course, completing silly challenges like “Pies in the Pants” or trying to avoid being covered in green slime. And hosting the mayhem while encouraging the contestants was Marc Summers. Now you can meet the television personality, comedian and talk show host in person when he comes to Elizabethtown.

Double Dare You to Come to E-Town with Marc Summers will be held on Saturday, July 29. The event will run from 4 to 8 p.m.,

Historical society in need of repairs

The building that houses the Elizabethtown Historical Society dates to the 1860s, and now it’s showing its age. “We need to raise some funds for building repairs,” said Dixie Kaley, president of the historical society. She noted that work needs to be done on the one-room schoolhouse that holds the historical society’s archives. “I’m calling the campaign ‘Save Our Little Red Schoolhouse Fund,’” Kaley said.

A few months ago, a volunteer noticed water damage on a wall, which led to an inspection of the schoolhouse’s original windows. “We realized we need to replace the windows,” Kaley remarked. “The wood around them has deteriorated to the point it can’t be painted anymore, and the

windows are no longer able to be opened or closed.”

The schoolhouse features 10 original windows, but two of them are interior windows that mark

with Summers appearing at The Tatted Toy Guys, 4 S. Market St., from 5 to 7 p.m.

Summers’ appearance coincides with a performance the following weekend at Mount Gretna Theatre, explained Tony Gibble, who is organizing the Elizabethtown event with Clint Gibble. “The Mount Gretna Theatre came to us about slime for the show,” said Tony, who owns The Tatted Toy Guys, The Candy Unicornium and Figments in Sprinkles with Clint.

“Having wanted to do a ‘Double Dare’-inspired event for some time, it seemed a perfect opportunity to make that come to life with the extra-special option of adding the show’s host to it. To our humble delight, Marc was enthusiastic about

doing it, and so the event was born.” Summers will perform “The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers” at Mount Gretna Theatre from Thursday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 6.

At the Elizabethtown event, Summers will talk about the show and answer questions. There will also be various games and activities hosted by LIV-ETown and downtown Elizabethtown businesses, all in conjunction with the theme.

Typically, LIV-ETown organizes events on second Fridays and some Sundays, but Tony and Clint said they have wanted to expand to Saturdays and when the timing worked out to host Summers, they jumped at the chance. “How many chances do you get to be in the same space and possibly get to

Rissers Mennonite Church will hold community picnic

“We encourage people to come out for food, fun and fellowship,” said Miranda Heistand, committee member and wife of pastor Daryl Heistand, describing Rissers Mennonite Church’s annual community picnic. “There is something for all ages to do.”

The picnic will be held on Saturday, July 29, beginning at 4 p.m. at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown.

Highlights of the event will include a 16-foot water slide for

both children and adults to enjoy, as well as lawn games, including cornhole and ladder golf. Young children can ride a barrel train and play in kiddie pools.

A meal, including pork barbecue sandwiches, sides and ice cream, will be offered as well.

The event will conclude with a showing of the movie “5000 Blankets” inside the church, beginning at 8 p.m. Inspired by a true story, the film follows a woman and her young son on their quest to find the woman’s husband, who has experienced a mental health crisis and is living on See Picnic pg 3

the wall between the older building and the newer edition built in the late 1990s, so only eight need to be replaced.

Kaley also hopes to raise enough money to install shades on the windows, so the shutters can remain open but the items inside the building would be protected from the sun.

She noted that it’s not a cheap project. “The estimates we have received are between $30,000 and $40,000,” she said.

In addition to asking for corporate sponsors and community donations, the historical society is organizing an online auction through John Carl Auction Company in Maytown. “We have some interesting pieces from Klein’s Chocolate Factory that people have never seen,” Kaley said, noting that the auction will include a variety of historical items from the society’s collection.

When it was originally constructed, the building at 57 S. Poplar St. served as a fire house. The fire company disbanded when its members left to serve in the Civil War, and the space was converted to a schoolhouse in the late 1800s. Over the years, it’s been home to a church, a community entertainment center and even a storage space for a local shoemaker. When Elizabethtown

resident Anna Olweiler Needham gifted the building to the community, the historical society was chartered in 1970, and the Kiwanis Club spent years restoring the space.

“A lot of faith and labor was put into this building by the Kiwanis members and volunteers, and we want to preserve that,” Kaley said.

She’s been working on establishing a research library on-site, and the historical society holds meetings throughout the year that are open to the public.

“We have a lot of history in this building,” she noted. “It was used to store wagons at one point, and it was home to the first Boy Scout troop in Elizabethtown. It’s been through a lot over the years, and it’s important to preserve the building’s integrity for future use by the community.”

To support the historical society’s fundraising campaign, call 717-3619382. Donations may also be mailed to the society or submitted in person.

Kiwanis Club sets pancake breakfast

The Kiwanis Club of NorlancoRheems will hold a pancake breakfast on Saturday, July 22, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 7 Marietta Ave., Mount Joy.

The meal is free, but donations will be accepted. The event will be held before the annual Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine.

The breakfast is a fundraiser for the Kiwanis Club, which supports children’s programs throughout the greater Mount Joy area. This year, the club is raising funds for its work with Rainbow’s End Youth Services to provide backpacks to children, for its support of service leadership programs at the Donegal Junior and Senior High schools and for other initiatives.

Local businesses are invited to sponsor the event. For more information, contact Ben Osterhout, past club president, at benosterhout@ pakiwanis.org.

the streets. Their journey sparks a movement of compassion toward people in need and inspires a city.

Picnic attendees should bring lawn chairs and towels or a change of clothes to dry off before the meal and movie.

The picnic offers an opportunity for the congregation to connect with the community, and it is open to everyone, whether they’ve attended before or are coming for the first time. This year’s event will have a relaxed feel, organizers said, with plenty of time for adult fellowship and conversations.

“The picnic is always one of the highlights of the year for us,” said Daryl. “We enjoy meeting new and old friends and neighbors. … We truly live in a wonderful community

here. Even if you can’t stay for the entire event, feel free to stop in and say hi.”

Rissers Mennonite Church holds services on Sundays beginning at 9 a.m. with Sunday school for adults and children, followed by worship time at 10 a.m.
