More than a century ago, a Boy Scout troop formed in Elizabethtown. Today, the troop is still going strong, and the community is invited to a celebration of Scout Troop 1’s 110th anniversary. The party will be held at Cassell Farms, 522 Cassell Road, Elizabethtown, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 27.
“We will have Scout activities, memorabilia and a campfire that will surely bring back fond memories for past Scouts and provide a sense of nostalgia,” said Caitlin Fickes, a parent of a Scout in the troop. “The display of memorabilia from the last 110 years will showcase the rich history of the troop and its evolution
over the years.”
At 6 p.m., a troop photo will be taken, and all past and present members of Troop 1 are welcome to participate. “It will be a

Scout Troop 1 is the oldest troop in Elizabethtown. “The mission of the Boy Scouts Troop 1 is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law,” explained leader Leo Gomez. “The purpose of the Boy Scouts, incorporated on Feb. 8, 1910, and chartered by Congress in 1916, is to provide an educational program for youth to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship and to

Featuring seven exercises you can complete in seven minutes, a new Fitness Court has opened in East Donegal Township. The court, created by National Fitness Campaign, is one of just 500 such spaces in the country and the only one in Lancaster County.
“For years, we’ve been looking at trying to develop something like this,” said Scott Kingsboro, assistant township
manager, adding that he originally considered installing a traditional fitness trail with various exercise stations along a path. When he discovered National Fitness Campaign and its all-in-one court, he was intrigued. He soon learned the company, which has a mission to change health outcomes in America, provided grant funding to help support the cost of the court.
The Fitness Court is located at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial

Representatives from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will also participate. “Sam discovered a little fish called the logperch, so they’re bringing a video on that,” Mark said. “He also studied freshwater mollusks, so they are hopefully bringing some of those. Kids will be able to touch them and see what they feel like.”
A Native American area will be set up as well, featuring games, a teaching table and a storyteller. “There’s going to be animal skins, scat, skulls and tracks, and the kids can try to figure out what they are,” Mark said. “Adults can try, too. This is for people of all ages.”
A talk will be given at 1:30 p.m. on fossils of Lancaster and York counties. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, with cake and ice cream to mark
Haldeman’s birthday. Tours of the Haldeman Mansion will be offered as well. Built in the early 1800s, the mansion overlooks the Susquehanna River. Haldeman lived from 1812 to 1880 and was an amateur scientist who became a respected scholar mostly through self-study. He contributed to the fields of zoology, linguistics, archaeology, geology, chemistry and natural history.
“If you enjoy nature and learning about it, this is the place to come,” Mark said. She noted that the preservation society used to hold Samuel Haldeman Day years ago, and when she was teaching a homeschool class on the property recently, the idea came up to host the day again.
“We thought it would be a good opportunity for more people to come here and see this place and enjoy it,” Mark stated. “It’s a beautiful place to spend a day. Bring lawn chairs or blankets, and spend as much time here as you’d like.”
There is no admission charge for Samuel Haldeman Day.

“Anything Goes” features toe-tapping musical numbers and lots of heart
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Expect hijinks, mistaken identities, and all sorts of shenanigans when Susquehanna Stage presents “Anything Goes,” a comedy about a diverse group of people aboard a cruise ship. The musical will be performed at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates from Friday, July 26, through Sunday, Aug. 4.
“This show is a situational comedy about a celebrity cruise line,” explained Gracious Mattson, who portrays debutante Hope Harcourt. “There are stowaways. There are criminals on board. There’s a debutante and a renowned evangelist. It’s a show that makes fun of everythinganything goes.”
Featuring the music of Cole Porter, “Anything Goes” includes classic songs such as “I Get a Kick Out
of You,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “You’re the Top” and the show-stopping number “Anything Goes.”
“That’s the Act 1 finale, and it’s a big dance number,” said Ethan Reimel, who plays the gangster Moonface Martin. “This show features a lot of different dance styles - tap, jazz, tango, samba, foxtrot.”
Each of the main characters in “Anything Goes” has a unique backstory, said Jared Mattson, who plays Billy Crocker.
“Billy Crocker is a broken-down broker living in Manhattan, N.Y., in the 1930s. He meets a beautiful woman, Hope Harcourt, and instantly falls in love with her,” Jared explained. “He spends the rest of the show just trying to get her to notice him. He’s a little bit of a fool, but his heart’s in the right place.”
Gabrielle Dina plays evangelist Reno Sweeney. “Reno is in love with Billy, but he does not love her at all,” she shared. “She’s looking for love in all the wrong places, but she does
find true love in this show.”
Ethan describes his character as “a gangster who’s really bad at being a gangster. He puts on this tough image, but he’s a bit of a softy deep down.”
Although the show takes place in the 1930s, it has not lost its appeal to modern audiences, Gabrielle said.
“This is a fun, lighthearted show, but it has a little bit of social commentary to it,” she said. “There’s a focus on celebrity mania, which I think is a very modern problem.
A huge subplot in the show is the captain desperately searching for celebrities on his ship because they have none sailing with them, and that means people won’t buy tickets to the ship. He doesn’t care if these celebrities are good people or bad people. There’s definitely some commentary about how people will worship criminals just because they’re celebrities.”
Because of its elaborate dance numbers and wide range of characters, “Anything Goes” is often per -
formed on a big stage with a big cast, but space is a bit limited at Susquehanna Stage. The theater staff was up to the challenge, said Jared.
“The production team has done a really good job with this show,” he noted. “There are 25 people in this cast, and it’s been impressive to see how such a big show is coming together here.”
Gabrielle said audiences can expect toe-tapping musical numbers, lots of comedy and a happy ending.
“Come for a lot of fun, a lot of laughter, a lot of humor and comedic timing,” she said. “If you’re feeling sad, come see this show. It will lift your spirits.”
“Anything Goes” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, July 26 and 27, as well as at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 2 and 3. Additional performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, July 28 and Aug. 4. For more information, visit www.susquehanna stage.com.

Saxophonist Jackie McLean encouraged her to make her first foray into playing jazz music on the harp. After graduating from college, she was active in the jazz and commercial recording scene in New York City and earned a Master of

In 2022, she became the first black woman to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. She has worked with cultural icons including Common, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, and Moses Sumney. Younger seeks to honor the work of trailblazing harpists Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane, and her most recent album, “Brand New Life,” is about forging new paths.
Born in Joplin, Mo., and raised in Detroit, Mich., saxophonist Charles McPherson has a musical style rooted in the blues and bebop. He worked intermittently with jazz bassist Charles Mingus from 1960 to 1974. He was also commissioned to help record ensemble renditions of pieces from Charlie Parker on the 1988 soundtrack for the film “Bird.” In 2020, the JazzTimes magazine readers selected McPherson as Artist of the Year and chose his album “Jazz Dance Suites” as Best New Release.
Recent high school graduate and pianist Yang has played the piano since she was 5 and the violin since
she was 10. She currently takes piano lessons with Dickinson College professor Eun Ae Baek-Kim. On the violin, Yang has participated in various PMEA festivals and qualified for the Dorothy Sutton state showcases in 2022 and 2023. She is the winner of the 2024 West Shore Symphony Orchestra (WSSO) Concerto Competition, as well as the 2024 Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra (HSYO) Concerto Competition. Additionally, she has been a part of the HSYO ensembles on the violin since seventh grade. This fall, Yang will attend New York University to study political science on a pre-law track. She hopes that she can continue to play the piano and violin as a hobby.

A graduate of Indiana University School of Music and a former student at the Hochschule fuer Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, Austria, Eley has performed as a soloist with orchestras from Germany, Canada, and China, and has given numerous recitals across the United States. The clarinetist’s most recent album, “Imaginary Animals,” features chamber music along with compositions by African American composers.

Park, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. It is open to anyone age 14 and up, and it features equipment for bodyweight exercises including squats, push-ups, pull-ups and lunges.
Users scan a QR code, displayed on a wall of the court, to learn how to use the equipment.
“I truly think this piece of equipment is for anyone from age 14 to 99, because they can customize it or modify it to their comfort level,” Kingsboro said. A push-up station, for example, features tips for beginners (“Apprentice”) to experts (“Savage”).
Residents are invited to attend an opening-day launch event on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 3 p.m. to try the Fitness Court and learn about upcoming community wellness events and programming.
East Donegal Township is working with GEARS in Elizabethtown, which will provide “ambassadors” to promote the court and demonstrate how to use the equipment.
Mike Brubaker, a township supervisor, said he’s excited to see the court put to use. He recommends that people stop by the site and scan the QR code and then go home to review the exercises before tackling the equipment. “That’s just what I would do, but people can come here, scan the code and start their workout if they’d rather do that,” he explained. To get started, visit www.national fitnesscampaign.com.
He thinks the Fitness Court will be a nice addition to a park that already includes tennis and pickleball courts as well as walking and running paths.
Chair yoga classes planned
“We think it’s important to provide healthy options of things for people to do,” Brubaker said. “Not everyone can afford a monthly subscription to a health club. This is free and outdoors. It just provides another thing for people in our community to do that’s healthy.”
While the grant covered some of the cost of the Fitness Court, the township is looking for businesses, organizations or individuals who would like to become
sponsors of the court. For more information, contact East Donegal Township at 717-426-3167.
After the launch event on Aug. 6, Susquehanna Regional Police Department will host National Night Out activities from 6 to 9 p.m. at the park. The free event will include music, games and food, along with opportunities to meet and interact with local police officers, firefighters and other first responders.
GEARS will offer Chair Yoga from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesdays, Aug. 14 to Sept. 4, at Fighting Dragons, 101 Cherry St., Elizabethtown. Using the support of a chair, participants will perform the movements in a seated or standing position. The class is for people age 14 and up.
There is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for residents. To register or for more information, visit www.getintogears.org or call 717-367-0355.

Udder Bliss, which offers fresh, handmade ice cream, reopened with five improvements, including more quality ingredients, new menu items, new local flavor collaborations, expanded hours and the offering of R&K Subs.
Owners Scott and Leah Nagle grew to love and appreciate the business when Leah became one of the main ice cream makers and part-time manager in 2020. When the former owners decided to sell, the Nagles jumped at the chance to take over the reins of this community sweet spot.
Leah reinvented the brand logo with a new cow named “Angela” last fall. The enhancements also included finding a nonGMO option for the dairy base, which came from South Mountain Creamery, a local dairy that was expanding its territory. The company’s grass-fed non-GMO base was used in the Under Bliss Creamery recipe for chocolate and vanilla in a blind taste test, and it won. During that same tasting event, six new flavors were launched that highlight local businesses: bacon from Groff’s Meats, Folklore Coffee & Company, sticky buns from Rise Bake Shoppe and Coffee Bar and Perisol’s Nuts, which can be found at Root’s Country Market.

The exhibit showcases specimens of sea life, shells, and plants from the more than 250,000 objects in the North Museum’s collection. These items depict life that is present in the Caribbean Sea, the coastal Atlantic Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean, and how each has developed traits to survive and sometimes thrive in its environment. The exhibit includes items that have not been displayed since the 1960s, and it is the first exhibit to be fully curated from North Museum’s collections.
Visitors may lend their creative touch to a collaborative artwork project by coloring pictures of underwater life and adding them to a depiction of a coral reef.
“Shallow Seas” will remain a main exhibit of the North Museum through May 31, 2025.
Now in its 72nd year, the North Museum impacts thousands of local students and their families annually through its education initiatives in the museum, in the community, and at home. Programs include field trips, early childhood education programs, summer camps, STEM Sisters, the Science and Engineering Fair for middle and high school students, and many other programs designed to create access to free and reduced-cost STEM learning opportunities and to strengthen the foundation of youths in the Lancaster community and beyond.
