Bear Creek student will play in international baseball conference
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Shawn Shipton III might only be 10 years old, but the Bear Creek School rising fifth-grader has already made an impression internationally. He is one of just 22 baseball players in his age group across the country to be chosen to represent the United States at the Latin American Baseball Conference (LABC) happening in the Dominican Republic July 31 through Aug. 6.
“I’m excited to go, but I’m nervous,” Shawn said. “I’ve never
been on an island before.” In fact, Shawn, who lives with his grandparents Shawn Shipton Sr. and Patty Shipton of Elizabethtown, has never been on a plane or left the country.
He’s confident in his baseball skills, however. He’s been playing the sport since he was 7 years old, and he currently plays for both the Elizabethtown Boys Club and the Keystone State Bombers in Manheim.
“Ten thousand kids tried out across the country for ages 10 to 17, and they took roughly 12 kids
to a team,” explained Shawn Sr., adding that his grandson will be playing on one of two U10 teams.
The younger Shawn tried out in February at Keystone’s Manheim facility, and he did well, although he gave his grandparents a surprise.
“We expected Shawn to catch, because he is both a catcher and a pitcher,” Shawn Sr. recalled. “We were expecting him to come out in his catcher’s equipment with the other players, but we didn’t see him.”
Instead, Shawn III lined up

As ExHaLTT Performing Arts Academy prepares to begin a new season of classes, the Elizabethtown nonprofit invites the community to a free performance of “Disney’s Newsies JR.”
The show, featuring students who participated in ExHaLTT’s Summer Musical Theatre
Intensive, will be performed at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, at Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St.

For many people, interactions with police, EMS or other first responders happen in stressful or dangerous situations. To help build positive connections between community helpers and members of the community, Northwest Regional Police Department will host National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The event will be held at the Mount Joy Township complex, 8855 Elizabethtown Road,
Elizabethtown, from 6 to 9 p.m.
“Too many times, people come in contact with police when help is needed,” explained detective Chuck Tobias. “Come see and talk to the first responders and get to know them on a positive note.”
Added Jill Munafo, secretary of Northwest Regional Police Department, “It’s a great way for the public to interact with first responders in a community setting and get to know them on a personal basis, not just in the

ranging in age from 8 to 18. “It’s a 60-minute production, with no intermission,” explained Jill Thomasson, founder and artistic director of ExHaLTT.
“Disney’s Newsies JR.” tells the true story of newsboys in turn-ofthe-century New York City, who rally together to strike against unfair working conditions.
“This is just an awesome musical with an inspiring message and lots of energy and great characters,” Thomasson shared. “The kids are super enthusiastic about this show.”
“Disney’s Newsies JR.” is sponsored by John Smith Real Estate Group, which allows ExHaLTT to offer the performance for free, Thomasson said.
As ExHaLTT gears up for classes that will begin on Monday, Sept. 9, the organization will host an open house on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown.
“People will have the opportunity to register for classes, meet our board members, see the space and enjoy light refreshments,” Thomasson said. “Staff from A Dancer’s Pointe will be on hand with dance apparel and shoes for sizing, and we’ll have videos rolling to show what we do at ExHaLTT.”
ExHaLTT is a faith-based nonprofit that takes its name from its tagline: Expressing Hearts and Lives To Touch. The organization offers classes for people of all ages in dance genres including creative movement, tap, modern and hip-hop, as well as fitness classes, musical theater courses and a social dance series.
The social dance series will kick off on Tuesday, Oct. 1, with country line dancing lessons offered from 8 to 9 p.m. for

eight weeks. The first session of lessons is for beginners, while an intermediate/advanced session will be held later in the winter. “We’re going to be doing other social dance nights, including Wednesdays, when we’ll do foxtrot, rhumba and swing, and Thursdays, with salsa and bachata,” Thomasson said, noting that details of starting dates are still being finalized. While country line dancing is open to people of all ages, the other social dance classes are for adults.
“Engaging in movement and interacting with others are just two things that make these classes super fun,” Thomasson said. “It’s a great way to stay or get healthy, meet and interact with new people and dive in to try something new. It’s a way to engage your brain cells and your body all at the same time.”
When Thomasson founded ExHaLTT, she wanted to focus on community outreach as well as performance, and she has created a partnership with Cornerstone Youth Center in Elizabethtown, where ExHaLTT staff and students will teach hip-hop workshops in September.
“This is our first community outreach of this type,” Thomasson said. “We want to engage with the community and give back. That’s one of our tenets at ExHaLTT.” She is also currently

took notes.
Shiptons received an email.
“I was on the PlayStation, and Grammy called me out to her and I thought, ‘Oh, I must be in trouble,’” Shawn III remembered with a laugh. He wasn’t in trouble; he had made the LABC team.
“I asked him later what that was about and Shawn said, ‘He told me to throw it high and inside, so I threw it high and inside,’” Shawn Sr. recalled. “‘He told me to throw a curveball, so I threw a curveball.’”
“And I hit the spot,” Shawn III said with a smile.
Players found out at the tryout if they made the next round of the competition.
“I was thinking, ‘Please call my name,’” the pitcher shared. He heard his name, and he moved on to the next step, a two-hour Zoom interview with Jim Parque, a former White Sox pitcher.
A few days after the call, the
Shawn III will compete as a pitcher on a team against other players from Caribbean entities such as the Virgin Islands and Curacao, as well as the United States and Canada. Team composition will be determined by on-site scrimmages, and the tournament will ultimately crown a gold medal winner.
The Shiptons are excited to travel with their grandson to the Dominican Republic, although Patty admits it’s nerve-wracking to watch Shawn play.
“These two get nervous when I’m pitching,” the younger Shawn said. “I try to feel cool. I know I have other fielders behind me.

heat of an emergency. All of the participants really care about the community. It is a great way to come together as a whole.”
Several local businesses will have tables set up at National Night Out. Pony rides and a bounce house will be featured, along with food trucks, music, Star Wars characters, face painting and more. Local fire departments will be on-site, and K-9 demonstrations will be offered as well. The festivities will conclude with fireworks at 9 p.m.
LIV-ETown will operate an entertainment stage, hosted by Ross Productions and sponsored by the Elizabethtown Optimist Club, The Greg Grogan and Kate Storm Team and John Carl Auction Co. Grant Bryan will headline the entertainment, with additional music by DJ Ross Productions and performances by E-Dance Center.
Except for food purchases, all activities at National Night Out are offered free of charge.
“Events like this are an enormous undertaking. So many individuals, organizations and businesses have come together to make it possible for the community to enjoy,” said Tony Gibble of LIV-ETown. “A huge thank you goes out to everyone involved whether donating their efforts, fundraising or just being a part of it.”
Held annually on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out began in 1984 as a way to bring police and community members together. The first year, 2.5 million people across 400 communities in 23 states participated in the event.
Over the years, the celebration has grown to encompass 38 million people in 17,000 communities throughout the United States.
“People tend to talk negatively about the police and feel as though we don’t do enough or don’t do
things that they feel we should,” said officer Mike Shetter. “This is a good opportunity for them to ask questions and realize just how much we do handle within the community. It’s also a great way to show kids that we are here to help and aren’t the big and scary officers they may see on TV or in movies.”
Limited on-site parking will be available for National Night Out, but people are encouraged to park at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., and use a free shuttle to and from the event.
