Solving A Problem In A Park BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ETN

Walking through Old Trolley Line Park in Mount Joy Township, Brendan Heisey noticed something was missing, so the rising senior at Elizabethtown Area High School took action. He built four benches with bases placed in various locations throughout the park, earning his Eagle award in the process. “I was introduced to the Old Trolley Line Park when I was helping with the Eagle Scout project of my brother, Chad Heisey,” Brendan said. “I saw that the park was still very new and didn’t have any sort of place to sit. It was here that I decided that benches would be a good fit.” Brendan, the son of Anthony and Sandy Heisey, is a member of Troop 117, Elizabethtown, chartered by the United Church of Christ. He completed his Eagle project in December 2020 and was awarded his badge at a See Park pg 3 Sally Nolt displays this year’s premium book.

The theme sums up the fair perfectly, said Sally Nolt, fair secretary, who noted that the fair committee is ready to go after having to cancel last year’s fair. “We’re back after a year off, and we’re back in full force,” she said. “You can see all of things you’d expect to see. We

rebooked all of the entertainment from last year.” The fair will feature rides, games, food, agricultural exhibits, livestock shows, competitions and more. “We really have something for all ages, from the baby contest to the Senior Citizens’ Day and all ages in

In a building off Erisman Road in Manheim, a team of volunteers is bringing the past back to life. Members of the Erisman Mennonite Church have been working to restore the Lincoln School, located across the street from the church at 8 S. Erisman Road. They will host an open house on Saturday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. The Lincoln School was built in 1884 as a one-room school and was used until 1952, when it was sold by Rapho Township to the church. It served as a home for pastor John Eby and his wife, who remodeled it for residential use and lived in it until selling it back to the church in 1985. Although the property

Church member Dennis Nissley, whose background includes historic restoration construction work, knew he wanted to help. “It had been a vision of mine for many years to try to do something with the building,” he remarked, noting that his father attended school at the site. Nissley led a team of volunteers that started work in early 2020. Although the pandemic stalled the project a bit, the group has spent most of the past year tearing down drywall,

Court of Honor in June at Conoy Brethren in Christ Church. To reach the rank of Eagle, a Boy Scout must earn 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership and serve the community through coordination and completion of an Eagle project. Participating in Boy Scouts has brought opportunities to try new activities and attend summer camp, Brendan said, noting that he wanted to earn his Eagle to hone lifelong leadership skills. “Looking at other older Eagle Scouts, I could see that the values they learned had stuck with them,” he stated. He added that his project was physically demanding but rewarding. “I would say the hardest part was the transportation of materials from one bench site to the other,” he stated. “The benches were spread over the entire walking path, so many loads of dirt and stone

had to be brought from the larger pile to the separate areas.” Thankfully, he wasn’t alone in the work. “Eagle projects are not done by just one person,” he remarked. “Scouts, friends and family members all came to my project to help in the construction. I would like to thank them for taking time to support me.” In addition to Boy Scouts, Brendan is active in the band and orchestra at school and enjoys reading and playing drums outside of school. He plans to attend college to study chemistry. Brendan encourages other Boy Scouts to go for the Eagle. “I would tell them that, despite the work they may have to put into it, they will not be disappointed with the results,” he said. “There will always be fellow Scouts and other Eagle Scouts that are willing to give guidance.”

and the open house will also showcase live performances. Cavod moved into the Manheim location on July 1. The 1,000-square-foot space required some work to transform it into a performing arts studio, including replacing the existing floor with a dance floor, hanging new mirrors and installing sound panels. “Our Manheim campus will be a micro-campus,” explained

Julie Haney, who will be the artistic director. While the New Holland location of Cavod offers more than 100 classes in music, theater and dance, the Manheim site will start smaller. “We’ll be starting off with dance classes,” Haney said, adding that Cavod will launch a new training program for dancers ages 18 to 25 called Ornate Dance Theatre.

Haney noted that the new space helps Cavod fulfill its mission of guiding students to “create with purpose” while also connecting with the community. “It’s a great opportunity to expand into our community and build relationships with more people,” she said. “I’m excited to welcome new students. I’m excited to see kids discover their passion.” Classes will begin at Cavod’s Manheim location on Monday, Aug. 23. For more information, visit https://cavod.org or call 717-354-3355.

program will focus on women’s art and the ways women make meaning with their hands. The presenters will be Narda LeCadre, an original member of the African American Quilters Gathering of Harrisburg; Rachita Nambiar, a classical Indian dancer; and Julie Smith, who makes hooked rugs. Amy E. Skillman, a folklorist, will moderate the discussion. The program is free to attend, but viewers must register at www.susquehanna folk.org. The in-person dance class, “A Spoonful of Jazz,” will be held on Friday, Aug. 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Hall of Philosophy, 212 Gettysburg Ave., Mount Gretna. The class is intended as a companion activity to a concert set for 7:30 p.m. in the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Penn-

sylvania Ave., Mount Gretna, featuring the New Orleansstyle jazz band Tuba Skinny. The concert and class have separate costs. “A Spoonful of Jazz” will be taught by world champion swing dancer Carla Crowen. After learning steps traditionally found in New Orleans, such as the Charleston, participants will learn a routine choreographed to the music of Tuba Skinny. The class is open to people of all ages and ability levels. No partner is needed. Attendees should wear comfortable shoes. The indoor venue is large enough to allow for social distancing, but attendees may wear a face mask. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the aforementioned website. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has announced the appointment of Sara Male as chair of its board of directors. Male stepped into the role previously held by Mary Ellen Davis, who served the LSO as board chair from 2017 and in many capacities before that role. Male has performed in the LSO for 10 years, most recently as acting principal cellist. She also chairs the LSO’s education committee, providing insight and direction for its eight education initiatives. Over the last season, the LSO provided a wide variety of free online concerts and expanded its educational offerings to include musician interviews and a Link Up concert in partnership with Carnegie Hall. The LSO also launched a new program, StandPartners, which pairs elementary school classrooms with professional musicians to share performances and excite young minds about music. Male noted that the LSO aims to grow its education

programs in the future, and it will also meet four music director finalists as guest conductors next season. Male received an Associate of the Arts in Music degree from Victoria Conservatory of Music in Canada, where she won the Principal Emeritus Prize. She earned a Bachelor of Music with high honors from Rutgers University and a Master of Music from the Mannes College of Music in New York City. She is a chamber-music recitalist and soloist, as well as a founding member of the Newstead Trio and Duo Chiaroscuro. Male collaborates in chamber music programs with her husband, violist Peter Kenote, and performs not only with the LSO, but also with the Reading Symphony, Kennett Symphony, and Harrisburg Symphony. Male teaches private lessons and also instructs cellists at Franklin & Marshall College and Elizabethtown College. She has directed chamber music programs and
