Elizabethtown

World War II veteran marks 100 years with a look back

A20-year resident of Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, Robert “Bob” Emberger Sr. celebrated his 100th birthday on July 9. As he reached this milestone, he reflected back on his life, including serving in World War II.

After graduating from high school, Bob, who lived in Philadelphia at the time, signed up for naval aviation, because it sounded fun. He didn’t think he’d be accepted, but he did so well on the entrance tests, he earned a spot in a training program.

“I was not a good student in high school. I could have been, but I was interested in sports,” he said. “I had no background to push me into aviation.” In fact, Bob had never been in an airplane. He didn’t even have a driver’s license.

But the lure of the skies was appealing, he said. “It sounded pretty good to me,” he stated. “I was a young guy, and this really appealed to me.”

Bob enrolled in West Chester State Teachers College, now West Chester University, while awaiting assignment to an aviator training class. After his freshman year, he joined a Naval cadet training unit at the University of Pennsylvania, entering active duty on March 4, 1943. He then moved to Mount St. Mary’s in Maryland, where he flew his first solo flight in a Piper Cub.

“When I went to land, I bounced all over the place,” he recalled. “I couldn’t figure out what was happening, because it

always worked when the instructor was there. So, finally, I just let it bounce out, and the instructor came over and said, ‘I thought we were going to have to shoot you down.’” It turned out the underseat parachute in the plane had shifted forward, preventing Bob from fully pulling back on the yoke to land the plane smoothly.

Bob moved up to open cockpit

planes and four-engine B-24 planes. He received his wings and officer’s commission Oct. 18, 1944, in Corpus Christi, Texas, and then was sent to Jacksonville, Fla., where he flew a Catalina seaplane on anti-submarine and Air-Sea Rescue patrols.

Bob was deployed to Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, where he continued to fly throughout the Pacific

The Manheim Farm Show will turn 70 this year, and in honor of that anniversary, all former Farm Show queens are invited to a reunion.

“We would like all former queens to come to the opening ceremonies on Monday, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m. to be recognized as former queens,” said Denise Hess, junior queen coordinator and member of the Farm

Compass Mark wants to be an ideological lightning rod and a guiding light in the community.

The nonprofit approaches its mission through three guiding principles - “follow the science,”

“an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and “the sooner the better.”

The ultimate goal is to manage and curb addiction or control

the behavioral part of it that can be controlled.

“Compass Mark can help you get to where you want to go in life; we can keep you on the right path,” said Teri Miller-Landon, Compass Mark’s director of programs. “There’s so much science out there on what leads kids to addiction. We’re not preaching abstinence. We’re trying to delay use as much as possible. We’re teaching them to make other

choices and to connect with people in healthy ways.”

Headquartered at 1891 Santa Barbara Drive, Suite 104, Lancaster, Compass Mark attempts to reach children in kindergarten through grade 12 before alcohol, drugs and gambling do. It drives its message home through workshops, skill-building, student assistance programs and good old-fashioned communication and interaction.

Last school year, Compass Mark connected with 8,000 kids in 66 schools from 28 school districts in Lancaster, Lebanon and Chester counties.

“Before I came here, I didn’t know what prevention was,” said Tim Steffen, director of development and communications at Compass Mark. “We want to make clear how prevention works. We’re actually saving lives. For every dollar spent on prevention, you’re saving $18 in the future. You’re saving taxpayers by nipping it in the bud.”

Some of the factors

that put kids at risk for addiction include low commitment toward school, parental attitudes favorable toward antisocial behavior, low perceived risk of drug use and low neighborhood attachment.

“For kids 13 or younger who use any kind of substance, they have a 70% chance to develop an addiction in seven years,” said Miller-Landon. “We use data to know what’s going on in our community. It’s things we need to target as we design our programs. It’s much, much easier to prevent bad habits from starting than to try and change them. That’s much of the thinking. Sometimes substance abuse can lead to contact with the criminal justice system and a criminal record.”

Overseen by a board of directors, Compass Mark employs 20 full-time workers and about 20 part-time staff members, all trained to deliver the curriculum.

“A lot of people are skeptical about prevention,” said Miller-Landon. “But prevention works. It’s about talking to kids often

Free backpacks and supplies offered through Tools 4 School

Suzette McCarty, who is organizing the event, said the faces of the students who come in are unforgettable. “You can see how much the students - and the parents - appreciate it,” she noted. “School supplies are expensive, and when you have a family with two, three or more students, it really hits them hard.”

Students of all ages are invited to come to the giveaway and get what they need. “Students first pick out a backpack. We have different colors and different sizes,” McCarty

said. “Then they go down the line of school supplies filling their backpacks. We have pocket folders, (paper) tablets, colored pencils, crayons, markers, pencils, pens, rulers, erasers.”

Students may also browse used books and select a free book or two.

This is the church’s 16th year for the giveaway, which is always well-received by the community, McCarty said. More than 150 students received backpacks and school supplies last year.

“We want to be sure everyone has tools to help them succeed in school,” McCarty remarked. “This is a great opportunity to help students get ready for school.”

The Farm Show held the first queen contest in 1955. The competition is open to any female between the ages of 16 and 20 who resides in or attends Manheim Central, Donegal, Hempfield, Elizabethtown or Warwick school districts.

“Once the queen is crowned, she will reign over the Farm Show, interacting with adults and children who attend the show,”

Hess stated. Queens also attend all of the livestock competitions and hand out ribbons to the winners as well as attending the bake sale and auction at the Farm Show, among other responsibilities.

“Another major requirement of the queen is to represent the Manheim Farm Show at the State Fair Queen competition in Hershey, Pa., in January,” Hess said. “The queen committee works with our candidate in the weeks leading up to the competition, teaching her skills that are needed for the competition.” Other duties of the queen include teaching children about an aspect of agriculture

Donations to support

The Touchstone Foundation recently awarded Youth Mentorship Partnership funds. This new program supports training to allow staff members and volunteers to become mentors for youth mental wellness in Lancaster County. The Touchstone Foundation has awarded a total of $47,000 to Bench Mark Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region, and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County.

Bench Mark Program is a strength-based family of mentors supporting highly at-risk youths through community-based intervention and diversion initiatives. Using the funds from the Touchstone Foundation, the program will seek to enhance the effectiveness

through an Ag in the Classroom presentation.

Hess is hoping for a large turnout of former queens at this year’s Farm Show.

“We would love to have former queens come and join the celebration with the other former queens, be recognized for their contribution to Farm Show, and to encourage young girls to enter the Farm Show queen competition,” she said.

“If any former queen has any of their queen memorabilia - sash, crown, etc. - we would love for them to bring it along and wear it to the Monday evening opening ceremonies.”

Former queens may contact Hess at 717-665-7295,

providing their name, the year they were queen and their contact information.

Details about what to expect on Monday and Wednesday of the Farm Show will be sent directly to attendees.

The Farm Show is also looking for girls to sign up for this year’s queen contest. All requirements will be listed in the Farm Show book published at the end of August. In the meantime, questions may be directed to Farm Show queen coordinator Jennifer Witmer at 717-203-9145.

The 2024 Manheim Farm Show will run from Monday, Oct. 7, through Friday, Oct. 11.

An estimated 100 youths will receive mentoring.

CASA provides a court-appointed volunteer advocate to every child who is abused

and neglected to ensure children have a safe, nurturing, and permanent home.

The organization’s Older Youth Mentorship Project will provide advocates with mentorship training so they can assist older youths in becoming self-sufficient, independent adults. The program will seek to bridge the barriers to success and connectivity to the community. An estimated 275 youths will receive mentorship support.

In total, the three organizations estimate they will serve 422 Lancaster County youths with mentoring in the coming year.

LancasterHistory names Fellows

LancasterHistory recognized three individuals as Fellows of the Lancaster County Historical Society at LancasterHistory’s annual dinner, held on June 13 at Excelsior Lancaster. Tom Ryan, LancasterHistory’s president and CEO, celebrated John H. Brubaker III,

Darlene A. Colón, and Dr. Leroy T. Hopkins Jr., awarding each a bronze medal and naming them as Fellows.

According to LancasterHistory’s institutional records, the Fellows of the Lancaster County Historical Society program was created in 1992 by incoming historical society president Hopkins. The designation recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the community’s understanding of Lancaster County’s history over an extended period of scholarly activity or who have had a significant impact on the vitality of LancasterHistory over an extended period of service.

The first recipients of the award were President James Buchanan and Thaddeus Stevens, honored posthumously, and John W.W. Loose, the then outgoing president of the historical society. Since 1992, this honor has been conferred on 17 individuals over 22 years.

Brubaker is deeply connected to Lancaster’s history, having spent more than four decades as an investigative reporter and the author of the “Scribbler” column. He has written seven books, including “Down the Susquehanna to the Chesapeake” and “Massacre of the Conestogas.” He is a regular contributor to

Giant offers back-to-school lunch ideas

The Giant Company’s team of dietitians shared five solutions to help families simplify food preparation for back-to-school lunches.

First, parents should get their children involved. Have children make a list of their favorite foods from each food group - starch, protein, vegetable, fruit, and dairy - and get them excited by bringing them to the store to shop for their favorites. Together, parents and children can build a balanced lunch, making sure children have one item from each of the five food groups. Ideas for a balanced lunchbox include

English muffins, sliced ham, carrots, strawberries, a cheese stick, wheat crackers, hummus, sugar snap peas, clementines and nonfat Greek yogurt.

Second, lunches should contain protein. Protein helps keep stomachs full and minds focused. When thinking about breakfast, lunch and snacks, include quick and easy foods like lunch meat, cheese, nut butters, Greek yogurt or hard-boiled eggs.

The third tip is to get colorful. Colorful fruits and vegetables provide a variety of nutrients. Entice kids with daily color challenges to encourage produce vari-

Fourth, parents should stock convenience items. Be prepared with pre-sliced apple packs, granola bars, applesauce pouches and trail mixes available for grab-and-go after-school snacks, and load up on frozen waffles and pancakes, fruit cups, oatmeal pouches and drinkable yogurts for easy breakfasts.

The fifth tip is to make dinner easy. Balanced dinners do not have to be elaborate. Keep it simple on busy weeknights with

At Masonic Village, Bob stays active by walking every day, gesturing to his walker and joking, “I run with this when nobody’s around.” He likes to watch sports and have meals with his girlfriend, Betty, a 98-year-old fellow resident.

Asked what the secret to his long, healthy life has been, Bob doesn’t hesitate to answer. “Probably being stubborn,” he said. “It’s my way or the highway.”
