Support dogs in need at The Bully Brunch

What’s better than Sunday brunch?

How about a brunch to benefit man’s best friend? Pitties.Love.Peace (PLP), an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit organization, will host The Bully Brunch on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grandview Vineyard, 1489 Grandview Road, Mount Joy.

The festivities will include a catered brunch buffet by Sweet T & Greens, a mimosa and Bloody Mary open bar, giveaways, adoptable dogs, music, lawn games and a photographer. Garden party attire is encouraged for the event, which is for people age 21 and up, and all proceeds will go directly to the dogs in the care of

Pitties.Love.Peace.

It’s been a few years since the organization hosted a larger-scale fundraiser, said Carrie Booth, PLP volunteer and brunch organizer.

“We thought it was important to get back to having events like this to not only raise money for the rescue but to also help promote awareness and advocacy for our organization and the breed,” she said.

Founded in 2011, PLP has rescued more than 1,000 dogs. Currently, the organization has 42 dogs in its care. It is an all-volunteer, foster-based nonprofit dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of primarily pit bull and bully breed mix dogs and puppies. “It is PLP’s goal to save those neglected, suffering or simply unwanted, and place them

in loving, forever homes,” Booth shared. “Many come to PLP with serious medical needs, others simply needing love for the first time in their lives. Whatever is needed, PLP provides.” Those needs could include anything from medical care such as lifesaving surgery to food, toys and bedding. In addition, PLP spays or neuters every dog prior to adoption to ensure that there will be no future litters of puppies.

PLP also serves as an advocate for the breed, which is often misunderstood, Booth shared, adding, “Pit bulls are wonderful, loving animals. They are intelligent, highly trainable and very eager to please. They are playful and have a great sense of humor; they will make you laugh every day.”

Students experience science

Donning lab coats and wearing protective goggles, some very young scientists explored hands-on experiments recently at Elizabethtown Child Care Center.

The students enjoyed a Science Explorers assembly called “Kooky Concoctions,” where they watched how dry ice creates smoke, learned about viscosity and more.

“It was a very interactive program,” said Lisa Botelho,

When it’s hot, hot, hot outside, there’s no better way to cool down than splashing in the creek. On Monday, Aug. 19, you can embrace the water’s chilliness while also learning about the environment at the Chiques Creek Stomp. The event will be held in Little Chiques Park, 229 Park Ave., Mount Joy, from 6 to 7 p.m.

“The creek stomp will provide the opportunity for participants to get in the stream and collect samples of the aquatic wildlife,” explained Tim Elder, treasurer of the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, which hosts the activity. “Representatives of the Lancaster County Conservation District will be on hand to identify what is collected and help explain how the types of aquatic life living in the stream provides

The Bully Brunch will benefit the dogs of Pitties.Love.Peace., some of whom are pictured here with their humans.

executive director of the center. “I’m sure they all went home and talked to their families about how great this was. They all had a lot of fun.”

The program was made possible through a $10,000 grant the center received from the STEM Alliance. The STEM Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing science, technology, engineering and math initiatives. A board member applied for the grant, which awarded funds to fulfill classroom wish lists, provide playground equipment and support programs such as the science assembly.

Science Explorers provides interactive programs to help young children engage with the wonders of science. At the end of the assembly, each student took home a kit of supplies to conduct experiments at home. “They received kits with four activities of things they can make - sidewalk chalk, super balls, insta-snow and magic sand,” Botelho shared.

“This isn’t just babysitting,” Botelho said. “We have an educational program with a curriculum.”

STEM is an important part of the curriculum, she said.

Chiques Creek

an indication of the health of the stream.”

While the creek stomp is fun for the whole family, it serves a bigger role than just entertainment, Elder said. “The purpose of the event is to educate people on the importance of keeping our streams clean to protect wildlife in the stream,” he shared.

The Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance is a volunteer-run organization with a mission to promote good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Creek Watershed in order to protect and preserve the Chiques Creek for the present community and future generations. The Chiques Creek Watershed covers approximately 126 square miles of area, almost all of which is in Lancaster County. Beginning in Lebanon County, the Chiques Creek flows 31 miles to its confluence with the Susquehanna River near Marietta Borough. Six townships - East Hempfield, Mount Joy, Penn, Rapho, West Cornwall and West Hempfield - as well as two boroughs - Manheim and Mount Joy - have areas contained within the watershed. In addition to the creek stomp, the organization holds other community events and works with a variety of local organizations to promote environmental initiatives. Meet -

ings are held at the Penn Township municipal building, 97 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month. There is no charge for the creek stomp, and no reservations are required. Participants should wear old shoes and clothes that they don’t mind getting wet and dirty.

Brunch

Brunch attendees will enjoy a soul food menu of items such as collard egg bake, Cajun candied bacon and pimento grits while enjoying picturesque surroundings and learning more about PLP, Booth said. “The event is being held in the tented pavilion on the lower lawn at Grandview Vineyard, so straight off, it’s just a beautiful venue for a Sunday brunch with family and friends,” she commented. “It’s just a really nice way to spend a late summer Sunday afternoon enjoying time with friends, family and fellow dog lovers. It’s also no secret that it is a really tough time right now for animals and animal rescue organizations. Sadly, there are record numbers of strays and animals needing care and homes right now.

So this is just a really great way to help make a difference in the life of an animal.”

PLP is always looking for additional volunteers and particularly foster families, Booth said, noting that the organization receives daily requests to take in puppies and dogs. “As an all-foster rescue organization, we depend 100% on individuals and families that are willing to open their home to help a dog in need until they are adopted into their forever families,” she shared. “There is truly no greater reward in animal rescue than knowing you saved a dog and watching them flourish in a forever loving adopted home. PLP provides the cost of all food, crates, toys, supplies and medical care, so it is really just a matter of opening up your home to help a dog in need. PLP currently has volunteers and fosters throughout the central PA area.”
