You’re invited to a block party

Celebratingcommunity will be at the heart of the Elizabethtown Block Party. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Elizabethtown Borough Community Park, Ken Lane and South Mount Joy Street.

The party will feature an opportunity for people to learn about social service agencies in the area, while enjoying free family fun, said Erica Onufer, one of the leaders of Atonement House Ministries, which is hosting the event.

“We will have 16 different agencies represented, which is the most we’ve ever had,” Onufer stated. “Each will have a table with information and giveaways and will showcase how they can provide support to people.”

Participating organizations will include Love INC., ECHOS and Atonement House Ministries. Elizabethtown Area School District will have a stand as will the Elizabethtown Borough Police Department.

“ We will also have a kids’ area, featuring free fun and entertainment, everything from a bounce house to balloon animals, face

Library schedules book sale

For six days, the community room in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library will be overflowing with books for a bargain when the Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library hold their fall book sale.

The sale will begin with a special event on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from 2 to

7 p.m. at the library, 10 S. Market St. Admission to that event is for Friends members or by a small fee, said organizer Laurie Shaffer.

The sale will continue with free admission from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9.

painting, games, and then there’s a playground and field area there as well,” Onufer said.

Entertainment will be featured throughout the day, from live bands to a meet-and-greet with police dogs and a reptile show.

Boston Bachert will headline the entertainment. “He does a little bit of everything,” Onufer said, noting that Bachert’s act includes juggling, illusion, comedy and more.

Everyone who attends the block party will receive a ticket for a free meal, including a side, dessert and drink. Attendees will also be entered in a drawing for prizes, which will be awarded throughout the party.

Organizers are working with members of LIV-Etown, who will serve as masters of ceremonies during the prize giveaways. “We have been gifted a lot of great prizes,” Onufer noted, adding that items include a scooter, sports equipment and gift cards.

“Everybody gets a ticket for the prizes, and we put the kids’ tickets in one drawing and the adults’ in another,” she said, noting that people must be present to win.

People will also get a small passport when they arrive at the party, and they are encouraged to visit each table to receive a stamp. “It’s a good incentive for people to be sure they’ve heard about all the opportunities in the community that are available to them,” Onufer said. Atonement House Ministries is open Saturdays from 7 to 10 p.m. at 105 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. “Everybody is welcome to come in and join us,” Onufer said of the ministry that provides resources to people in need in the community. The organization took over hosting the block party from previous hosts the Elizabethtown Ministerium this year after participating in the event last year. “It was such a great event last year, and we had such a great turnout,” Onufer said, adding that she hopes this year’s party will draw a large crowd, too.

“By doing this event, we’re really trying to bless the people in our community and get more resources into their hands,” she said.

Since the festival began 35 years ago, it has cemented its role as a beloved tradition in the community, and it draws more than 1,000 attendees each year. The event serves as one of the largest yearly fundraisers for Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The funds raised from ticket sales and duck sponsorships are used to cover the organization’s operational expenses and cost of treatment for patients who cannot pay in full. The price of adopting 15 ducks will cover the cost of one hour of a patient’s uncompensated treatment. “We never turn a client away based on their ability to pay,” said Kristen Masengarb, associate director of fund development for Schreiber. “As an organization, we lose an average of $75 per hour of treatment that isn’t covered by insur-

Native tree and shrub fundraiser planned

The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program of Lancaster County will host its fourth annual native tree and shrub sale. The sale will feature a limited supply of 28 different trees and shrubs, all of which are native to Pennsylvania.

The trees and shrubs provide food, shelter and nesting habitat for wildlife, as well as privacy, shade, foliage and landscape beautification. Planting trees can also reduce flooding, stabilize soil and filter pollutants. The Master W atershed Stewards noted that fall is one of the best times to plant new trees.

Proceeds from this fundraiser support the Lancaster County Master Watershed Steward Program and its efforts to share information and inspire improvements within local watersheds.

Preorders are required; no plants will be sold at the pickup locations. To place orders through Sunday, Aug. 27, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ mws-tree-sale.

Plants may be picked up on Friday, Oct. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

To learn more about the tree sale, visit the aforementioned website. A complete list of

trees and shrubs with planting requirements is available at https://tinyurl.com/MWS -2023TreeSale under the “Tree/Shrub Catalog” tab. To place an order by phone, call 877-345-0691 on Mondays to Fridays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Book sale frompg 1

“We have all different categories of books,” said Shaffer. Categories will include adult hardback fiction, trade paperback fiction, regular paperback fiction, nonfiction, history, cookbooks and children’s books. DVDs and CDs will also be for sale.

“Everything is priced to sell,” Shaffer noted.

The Friends hold two sales a year - one in the spring and one in the fall. In the past, the spring sale was limited to just a few categories of books, but the response from the public to the sale was so great, the group decided to expand both sales to include all categories.

The book sale helps the Friends group fulfill its mission to support the library.

“All proceeds go directly to the library to fund their programming,” Shaffer said.

The Friends group accepts donations for the book sale year-round, and volunteers also sort books year-round. The group is always looking for new members, who can sign up at the library or during the book sale. The Friends offer individual and family memberships.

Shaffer invites everyone to come out and come shopping for books. “We really have something for everyone,” she said.

Entrance to the library is from the back of the building, accessible from Peach Alley, where a free parking lot is available. Customers are encouraged to bring their own bags or boxes.

Bash and Benefit will support nonprofit

“Grandview Vineyard is a family-owned and (familyoperated) business celebrating their 10th anniversary,” said Sarah Haines, owner. “You won’t want to miss this amazing celebration.”

Grandview will celebrate the milestone and support a local nonprofit at the 10th anniversary Bash and Benefit. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the vineyard, 1489 Grandview Road, Mount Joy. It will run from 1 to 8 p.m.

The festivities will feature music throughout the day from Adam Blessing, Ryan Moran, Schnazzy and the Grant Bryan Band. The Steel Wheels will headline the event with a performance beginning at 6:30 p.m. A variety of food trucks, including Fuego Latino, will be on-site, and wine and beer will be for sale. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

A grape stomp competition between two local businesses will take place at 3 p.m., and a live wine barrel auction will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the bash will benefit Aaron’s Acres. “They provide activities and services year-round for children and

young adults with disabilities,” Haines said of the Lancaster-based organization. For 25 years, Aaron’s Acres has been providing therapeutically based recreational programs to people ages 5 to 21. Activities are directed by specially trained and certified staff in an environment that bolsters socialization and communication skills. Care for the whole family, including emotional, educational and recreational support, is offered through the organization as well.

First Citizens Community Bank is sponsoring the Bash and Benefit, and additional sponsors are still being sought, Haines noted. For

more information on sponsorship, contact sarah@ grandviewwines.com.

Haines encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the beautiful setting of the vineyard while having fun and supporting a great cause. “What could be better than a relaxing afternoon and evening lounging by the vineyard, sipping on wine and beer with friends while listening and dancing to amazing local musicians and supporting children with disabilities?” Haines remarked. “This is a family-friendly event. Drop in for an hour or stay all day.”

Nominations sought for award

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is accepting nominations for the annual Mira Lloyd Dock Partnership Diversity Award, given in recognition of conservation work in environmental justice communities in Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Environmental Protection considers any census block group where 20% or more individuals live in poverty or 30% or more of the

population identifies as a minority to be in an environmental justice area.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, welcomes nominations of anyone in Pennsylvania who has shown exemplary leadership in his or her community through environmental restoration, awareness, education or conservation work. This work includes

community tree plantings, rain garden or native pollinator garden installation or plantings, regenerative agriculture or urban farming or permaculture, or community beautification in an environmental justice community.

Nominees are ranked on their community engagement, collaboration and environmental conservation work with environmental justice

Fulton Bank welcomes new board members

Fulton Bank recently announced the appointments of retired Rear Adm. Jan Hamby and Mike Shirk to the bank’s board of directors.

Hamby, a highly decorated naval officer, has more than 35 years of expertise and leadership in telecommunications, space, cyber and national security.

Prior to retiring from the U.S. Navy, Hamby served as the deputy chief information officer for the Office of the Secretary of Defense and vice director of command, control, computers and communications for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Subsequent to her naval career, she served as the chancellor for the College of Information and Cyberspace at National Defense University.

Currently, she serves on the board of Ligado Networks, and she previously served on the boards of the American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association and Cubic Corporation. Additionally, she holds advisory board roles with the Ocean Thermal Energy Corporation

and George Mason University’s C4I and Cyber Center. In addition to these board positions, Hamby co-owns Fair Winds Farm and TwinSet Designs.

Hamby holds a Doctor of Management from the University of Maryland Global Campus, a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College, a master’s degree in information systems and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Boston University.

Shirk, CEO of The High Companies, one of the largest

approaches to conservation. A volunteer committee of environmental leaders, past Dock Award winners, and others will determine the winners.

family-owned employers in central Pennsylvania, has more than 25 years of business management, strategy and engineering experience.

Shirk has led The High Companies as CEO since 2015 after starting as a member of the company’s board of directors in 2011. In this role, he has been responsible for strengthening the family of 11 diverse companies.

Prior to joining High, he served as vice president of architectural specialties worldwide for Armstrong World

Industries Inc. Additionally, he worked for Bain & Company Inc. in Boston, a global business consulting firm where he advised companies across several industries on a variety of corporate strategy, growth and operational effectiveness issues. He also previously worked for Lockheed Martin Corporation in the maritime systems and sensors division headquartered in Moorestown, N.J.

Shirk holds an MBA from Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He attended Bucknell University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

For more than 12 years, Shirk has served as a board member with the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. Additionally, he has been an active advisory board member with the Lancaster STEM Alliance since 2016.

To submit a nomination, visit https://tenmilliontrees.org/ contact/mld/. Forms are also available by emailing keystone trees@cbf.org or calling 717200-4543. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Sept. 29. The award winners will receive $5,000 worth of native trees and supplies from the partnership, to be used for a 2024 tree project.

Now in its fourth year, the award was created to honor the spirit of Mira Lloyd Dock, who pursued urban beautification and forest conservation at a time when women and people of color were not welcomed at the decision-making table.

Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to lead the way in forest conservation. She was an advocate for Penn’s Woods and in 1901 was appointed to the State Forestry Reservation Commission by Pennsylvania Gov. William Stone.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership will present the award during the Pennsylvania Forestry Association’s annual symposium on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Toftrees Golf Resort in State College.
