Two-day auction will benefit Mount Calvary Christian School
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This event is a social gathering for MCCS families to get to know each other as well as a fun community event for all ages,” said Lindsay Norris, director of development and community relations, describing the Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS) benefit auction.
“The money we raise goes toward making tuition affordable for as many kids as we possibly can.”
The event will take place on Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28, at the school, 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown.
Friday’s festivities will begin with dinner at 4:30 p.m. “We will have meals available for dine-in or takeout,” Norris said, noting that the dinners will feature Harvey’s Main Street BBQ pulled pork, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, a roll and a drink. Both adult and child portions will be offered. Dine-in meals will be served at the school. Takeout meals will be available for drivethrough pick up at the school’s
west campus, 35 Elm Ave., Elizabethtown.
Friday evening will also feature a variety of live and silent auctions. Hess Auctioneers will oversee the live auction portion.
“Our main auction time is on Friday,” said Eric Stone, incoming auction chair and a member of the auction committee. “We have auctions for teacher experiences, where kids get to go with a teacher and do something fun. Each class also puts together a basket, so
they will be sold Friday night. We have vacation getaways up for auction and different experiences around the community that businesses have donated.”
On Saturday, the event will kick off with an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet beginning at 8 a.m., followed by live auctions starting at 9 a.m.
“Saturday’s auctions feature home décor, tools and sports memorabilia,” Stone said.
Also on Saturday, Kids Fest will

“We’ll have a variety of carnival-type games. It’s student run, and the proceeds will go toward the National Honor Society,” Norris said. Kids Fest will also feature a dunk tank, cotton candy and snowcones.
MCCS has been holding a benefit auction event since the early 1990s.
“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” Stone said. “The

All proceeds from the Blood, Sweat, and Tears Run will benefit the Emily Whitehead Foundation. The central Pennsylvania-based organization is named after Emily Whitehead, who in 2012 became the first child to be treated for cancer using her own re-engineered T cells to fight her leukemia. This highly experimental treatment for Whitehead’s leukemia saved her life, and with the help of the foundation, it has received FDA approval and is now used around the world to help save the lives of both children and adults. The foundation continues to fund new and emerging advanced therapies in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Banquet will support Mt. Hope Retirement Community
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On Saturday, Sept. 21, you can enjoy dinner while supporting a great cause. A Fall Benefit Banquet for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will be held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the meal will be served at 5:30 p.m.
The homestyle meal will be prepared by volunteers as well as Peters’ BBQ and Amy’s Mixing Bowl. The menu will feature cranberry-orange sweet bread with vanilla icing streusel, sliced roast beef with savory brown beef gravy, gourmet cheesy potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans with bacon, a broccoli-cauliflower-carrot blend, creamy coleslaw, homemade soft dinner rolls with butter, a choice of desserts and drinks.
Following the meal, a short program will take place with guest speakers, personal sharing and special music. This year’s banquet will feature themed baskets in both silent and live auctions. Baskets will include homemade and donated items from local businesses and individuals, experiences and gift cards to local attractions and retail stores, as well as passes to events and local entertainment hot spots, said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope. “Also, part of the fundraiser (will include) catered meals that attendees will be able to bid on which are offered in homes of those with a personal connection to Mt. Hope as well as homemade pies, cakes and breads,” she commented.
The banquet provides muchneeded funding for the retirement community, Wilson said. “The mission of Mt. Hope will be shared, and attendees will also hear personal stories of how Mt. Hope touched people’s lives when they needed answers and provided a way to help families in need,” she stated. “Mt. Hope continues to be an inviting and welcoming place for everyone who needs our services. We continue strong in our founding mission to provide affordable, quality care in an environment based on Christ’s model of care for ‘the least
of these,’ regardless of someone’s resources or ever-changing financial and personal circumstances.”
This will be Mt. Hope’s third annual banquet fundraiser, she said, adding, “It’s our largest giving opportunity for the community to support our work. We will strive to exceed our goal of $55,000, which is what was so generously shared last year.”
People attending the banquet will have the opportunity to hear about everything Mt. Hope has accomplished over the past few years. “We will share the most recent updates and news about our endeavor to expand with building two new independent, single-floor living duplex cottages on our campus,” Wilson said. “Come ready to see architectural renderings of the newly anticipated cottages as well as where we are in the process with the expansion and the most up-to-date timeline and fundraising goals.”
According to Wilson, Mt. Hope provides more than $1 million in charitable care every year thanks in part to community support.
“For the most part, Mt. Hope is supported by Medicaid state assistance,” she explained. “A large, ever-growing gap exists in what the state reimburses long-term care facilities and the actual cost of nursing care, and about $200 helps bridge the gap for one resident for one day of nursing care. Raising funds to assist in helping residents who are not able to afford the cost of their care or benevolent care continues to be an increasing challenge.”
To reserve individual, couple or group seating at the banquet, individuals may contact Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthopenazarene .org. There is an opportunity to be an event or table sponsor, reserving six seats per table for a set donation. The benefit meal is free; however, attendees at the banquet will have an opportunity to financially support the ongoing work of Mt. Hope, and there is a suggested donation to support the cost of the banquet. The deadline for banquet reservations is Saturday, Sept. 14.

Dam Bridge Challenge will support Riverkeeper Association

You can help to ensure the quality of the water in the Susquehanna River by getting out on the river during the sixth annual Dam Bridge Challenge. The fundraiser to benefit the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning and ending at the Lock 2 Recreation Area, 2140 Fishing Creek Road, Wrightsville. Participants are invited to compete in three paddle races - a 10-mile route, a 3-mile course or a quarter-mile kids’ race - or enjoy a 1-mile recreational paddle during the event, which will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. before the first boats hit the water at 9 a.m.
“Typically for the Challenge, we get a wide array of boats out on the water, from surfskis, which are very fast kayaks, to outrigger canoes, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and recreational canoes,” said Ted Evgeniadis, executive director of the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association. Participants should bring their own boats, although there is equipment available for rent for people who need it.
The event gets its name from the 10-mile race, which pits participants against each other either up river or down river, Evgeniadis shared.
When the race started six years ago, the Riverkeeper Association’s office was located at Shank’s Mare Outfitters along the river. An
employee who is an avid stand-up paddleboarder and kayaker had the idea for the challenge race because of the organization’s location.
“It’s 5 miles from there to the Safe Harbor Dam, and it’s 5 miles to the Route 462 bridge that connects Wrightsville to Columbia,” Evgeniadis explained. “On the day of the event, the direction is chosen, and the registrants don’t know which way it will be - either to the dam and back or to the bridge and back.”
Prizes will be awarded for the top
three male and female winners in a variety of age groups, and all participants will receive a reusable tote swag bag filled with freebies.
Live music and refreshments will be featured at the race’s conclusion.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association. Founded in 2006, the organization works to promote clean water.
“We advocate against pollution and we educate the public through programming,” Evgeniadis said. “We have a lot of citizen science programming on monitoring for bacteria, microplastics, general water quality and more.” The group host cleanup events, advocates for research, funds scientific studies and works to ensure there is fishable, swimmable and drinkable water in the Lower Susquehanna River watershed.
“There’s a lot of great organizations that support the area around the Chesapeake Bay watershed,” Evgeniadis said. “This one supports work that is crucial to keep our drinking water safe, to make sure the water people recreate in is safe.” He encourages anyone who is interested to join the challenge, noting that the event puts a premium on safety.
“Don’t be scared to get out on the water,” he said. “This event is on the Susquehanna, but it’s being held on Lake Clarke, which is a reservoir
