Fun and learning will go hand in hand when Chiques PreK opens at Chiques United Methodist Church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The private school will operate Mondays through Fridays year-round and will offer classes for children ages 3 to 5. Cindy Beyerlein, acting director, said the school is a natural fit for the church because it will further the church’s mission of community interaction. “We were looking for opportunities to expand into the community,” she stated. “We wanted to increase our outreach and find new ways to connect with the community.”
Plans began for the preschool in January, and Emmy Brenner was hired as the lead teacher. She’ll be joined in the classroom by assistant teacher Kathleen Geigley, along with church volunteers. Beyerlein noted that the teacher-to-student ratio will be 1 to 10.
“ECHOS strives to actively prevent homelessness, or at least make experiences of it brief and non-recurring,” said Natalie Dixon, development director of ECHOS. To help support its mission, the organization will hold its second annual ECHOS of Hope Gala on Thursday, Sept. 22. The event will take place from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.“Theevening begins with a cocktail hour and silent auction,” Dixon explained. “Thanks to the generous support of local businesses and individuals, we will be auctioning off a wide variety of items.” Auction items include eight vacation packages for domestic and international trips, provided by AmFund; a variety of experiences such as a charcuterie class or photography session; gift baskets; and more. Guests will be invited to enjoy the FX Photo Booth during the cocktail hour as well. New this year, the gala will also feature a special event called Champagne & Diamonds. “We will have 100 champagne glasses available for purchase during the cocktail hour,” Dixon remarked. “Ninety-nine of the glasses will hold cubic zirconia, and one will have a real diamond. A qualified jeweler will be on-hand to inspect the gems and find the lucky winner of the real diamond. The winner will be announced later in the evening and will be able to exchange their diamond for a piece of jewelry valued at $2,500 to $3,000, generously donated by Andrew Douglas Jewelers.” The evening will also include a dinner hour with a buffet catered by Food for Thought Catering, an open bar sponsored by Funk Brewing, a short program and dancing, Dixon said.Funds raised at the gala directly support families and individuals at risk of or experiencing homelessness in the greater Elizabethtown area, which includes the northwest region of Lancaster County, she noted. “The gala’s fundraising efforts help support the Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter, Enrichment Center, supportive housing programs, eviction prevention and the Crisis Response Counseling Program at the Elizabethtown Area Middle and High schools, as well as

additional programs and services offered by ECHOS,” Dixon commented. Brenner brings with her more than 15 years of experience as a preschool teacher, including working at Head Start. She describes the Chiques PreK curriculum as academic-focused, with an emphasis on creativity.
“We’ll have circle time with songs, stories and Spanish immersion. We’ll have lots of opportunities for students to burn off their excess energy with gross motor play both inside and outside. We’ll also be incorporating rest time into the day,” Brenner remarked, noting that students will bring their own lunches. Daily lessons in reading, math and science will be offered, along with small-group instruction and opportunities for tactile activities, imaginative play and more at various learning centers. There will also be a focus on social-emotional development of students, Brenner said. Students will also take field trips and will be treated to guest speakers and readers from the community. “I’m hoping to bring in someone from the police department as well as other community groups,” Brenner noted. Beyerlein added that the students will also be treated to intergenerational learning opportunities, when members of a group at the church called The Elderberries will visit the classroom. “We’ll be working on integrating them into the school as storytellers or to do crafts with the children,” she explained. Brenner emphasized that an academic-focused preschool program is an essential first step for students. “Pre-K gives students a better foundation for kindergarten readiness,” she stated. “It’s setting the child up for success.” School staff are working with area school districts, including Donegal, Hempfield, Columbia, Manheim Central and Elizabethtown, to make sure the preschool curriculum complements what the public schools areSpaceoffering.is limited in the preschool to 20 students initially, although Beyerlein noted that there is room to expand to up to 60 students down the road. She anticipates lots of interest in the program. “The quality of this program is what sets it apart,” she said. “We are so blessed to have Emmy. The Iddy Biddy Soccer Program for children ages 3 to 5 will take place on Saturdays, Sept. 10 to Oct. 29, from 9 to 10 a.m. or 10 to 11 a.m. at Elizabethtown Area High School’s Field 2, 800 E. The annual Labor Day Auction will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3, and Monday, Sept. 5, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 101 Park Ave., Quarryville. The rain-or-shine event, which has been held for the past 38 years at various locations, will benefit Hospice & Community Care. Admission and parking will be free. Both days of the auction will begin with food that is made from scratch and sold by members of the Amish community. Handmade doughnuts, sticky buns, pretzel logs and more will be provided by multiple local families as a way to give back to Hospice & Community Care for the services it offers the area. “Hospice cares for several Amish community members. Patients and their families are able to stay at home and dictate the care they want,” said Amy Lewis, director of philanthropy for Hospice & Community Care. “It’s very significant the Amish community can help us in that way. Their food sales account for a huge portion of the auction’s revenue each year, and their milkshakes are rival to none.” Both lunch and dinner will also be available to purchase later in the day. Multiple specialty auctions will begin following breakfast, held simultaneously throughout the day in five separate buildings. The auctions will not be limited to one category; the event will include auctions for tools, gift baskets, gently used items, handmade quilts and sports memorabilia, to name only a few. “You can find anything you could possibly think of,” said Lewis. “If you aren’t interested in an auction, you can just pop into the next building and find so many different things.”

The purchase will fund an entire day of service for a patient in hospice care. The auction is the largest fundraiser for Hospice & Community Care and raised over $800,000 last year. “Our decisions about who we’ll care for don’t have to be made based on how patients can pay for care,” said Lewis.
