Lions Club car show and barbecue will support community organizations

Avariety of vehicles, food, entertainment and more will highlight the 23rd annual Cruise In and chicken barbecue hosted by the Elizabethtown Lions Club. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rheems Fire Department, 350 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown. Registration for the car show will begin at 8 a.m.

“It is open to all vehicles - cars, trucks of all sizes, motorcycles, and tractors,” said John Lerch, treasurer of the Elizabethtown Lions Club. “Antique and modern, stock and custom, even

professional and commercial vehicles are also welcome, both in service and retired.”

Several trophies will be awarded, including Best of Show, Participants’ Choice, Best Truck,

“It’s fun to stop by and see some great cars.”

Best Motorcycle and Best Tractor, among others. “There will be a special award in memory of club member and retired Donegal High School band director Glen Leib,” Lerch shared.

Along with vehicles, the event

will feature food trucks, music from a DJ, vendors and fire trucks from the Rheems Fire Department. Chicken barbecue meals will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature a half-chicken from Peters’ BBQ, a baked potato, a roll, applesauce and water. Although the deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, Sept. 4, a limited number of meals will be available for purchase on the day of the show. Tickets for the chicken barbecue may be purchased from any Elizabethtown Lions Club member or at Sloan’s Norlanco Pharmacy, 428 Cloverleaf Road; B & G Lumber, 212 W. High St.;

Set against a backdrop of beautiful fall-like weather, the 2024 Elizabethtown Fair ran from Aug. 19 through 24. The fair drew thousands of people, who enjoyed agricultural exhibits and competitions, indulged

Lecture Series will feature changemakers

People who are making an impact on the world around them will be featured in Elizabethtown College’s 2024-25 Lecture Series. Each brings a unique perspective designed to get audiences thinking, said Brad Weltmer, director of communications and social media for the college.

“E-town’s Lecture Series is free to attend and offers a tremendous opportunity to be enlightened, engaged and entertained,”

he shared. “This year’s series features three internationally known speakers who are the leading voices on relevant, thought-provoking topics that deeply impact our world.”

All three lectures will take place at 7 p.m. in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center on the college campus at 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown.

Winona LaDuke will kick off the series with a talk on Thursday, Oct. 24. She will speak on the topic “The Green Path Ahead: Indigenous Teachings

Rookie Lacrosse will be offered for boys and girls ages 5 to 14 on Sundays, Sept. 15, 22, and 29, from 4 to 5 p.m. at Jane Hoover Field at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Participants will be introduced to the basics of the game of lacrosse. The skills of catching, passing, and shooting will be emphasized along with small group games to highlight the skills learned. The program will be led by Elizabethtown Youth Lacrosse Club coaches. Participants will receive a T-shirt.

Parent and Child Swim -

ming will take place on Saturdays, Sept. 7 to Oct. 26. Sessions will be offered from 8 to 8:30 a.m. for children ages 6 to 24 months and from 8:40 to 9:10 a.m. for children ages 2 to 3 years old. A parent or guardian must participate in the pool with each child. This class is designed to help young children feel comfortable in and around the water. Both classes will be held at the Masonic Village Patton Pool, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown.

Paint a Pillow will be offered at the Winters Heritage House, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. of the late William and Soria Louka Dous. She was a homemaker, a sensational cook, mother, and wife as well as an accountant working in her husband's esteemed Veterinary Animal Hospital. She was a member of St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church, where she was a Sunday School Teacher and cherished her time at the church. Manerva's passions included cooking, music and reading. Bright colors, and rainbows brought joy to her life. She also took great pleasure and pride in assisting newcomers from Egypt to America, dedicating herself to helping them adapt to their new surroundings. Manerva was a very vibrant and secretly feisty person; known for her deep kindness. She will be cherished in memory by all who were lucky enough to know her. She is survived by one daughter: Mary F. Awad, Elizabethtown. One son: John F. (Marisa) Awad, Philadelphia. Siblings: Magda Dous; Samir (Treza) Dous and Samia (Magid) Rouphail.

Church to host Serb Fest

The St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church, 601 S. The weather was perfect, the crowds were huge and the excitement was palpable as the Elizabethtown Fair returned for another year. The weeklong festivities, held from Aug. 19 to 24, included the crowning of the fair queen on Monday night, when Alexandria Neff earned the title. During Senior Citizens’ Day on Wednesday, Jerry Ober was named senior king and Sandy Leyh was named senior queen. Visitors to the fair enjoyed a variety of livestock competitions, agricultural exhibits, live entertainment, games, rides and more. Here are the winners of various competitions.

“While speakers bring their own ideals, a committee made up of faculty, staff and student representatives select the speakers each year to provide a variety of backgrounds and perspectives for our students to gain a deeper awareness of a topic impacting society,” he explained.

The lectures are open to the public, and Weltmer said the series is part of the college’s commitment to serving the greater community.

“The lecture series was developed to enlighten our campus and engage with the surrounding

community,” he commented. “The college believes sharing diverse views is essential to education and furthers our commitment to civil discourse and the peaceful expression of ideas within our living and learning environment.”
