Sharing love and lessons through Bible2School
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When children participate in the Bible2School program, they learn life lessons, explore biblical truth, make new friends and have fun. Elizabethtown’s Bible2School program will kick off on Tuesday, Oct. 1. It will offer free classes to second-grade students from East High Street Elementary School on Tuesdays and third-grade students from Bear Creek School on Wednesdays. Students are bused to and from classes, which are held in a one-room schoolhouse at Rissers Mennonite Church.
“The children bring their lunch,
and we usually start out with time to check in with them and they can share anything that’s really on their hearts,” said Karen Olweiler, site coordinator. “Then we’ll have a lesson - Old Testatment curriculum for second grade and New Testament curriculum for third grade.”
Lessons are underscored with questions such as “How do you show love to others?” and “How do you forgive?” and are reinforced through songs or hands-on activities.
“There might be an experiment or a demonstration for the children to see,” Olweiler said. “It helps them understand what you’re trying to teach. Sometimes, there’s
a skit with the Bible lesson. We might go over the story and have them act it out. The kids really like that, especially Daniel and the lions’ den. We have little manes they can wear and a crown for the king.”
Bible2School began in 1979 in Manheim and has expanded to more than 30 schools throughout the county and the state. The program came to Elizabethtown Area School District in 2016 and has been held at Rissers Mennonite Church since 2021.
Olweiler, who has been volunteering with Bible2School since 2016, said she’s always impressed with the children’s enthusiasm for learning as well as their
Author Louise Penny will highlight library benefit event

A murder has been committed in Three Pines, a tiny Quebec village, but don’t worry. Inspector Armand Gamache is on the case. Gamache is a lead character in 18 bestselling books by author Louise Penny, and he’ll star in her newest book, “The Grey Wolf,” which will be released in October. Fans of Penny (and Gamache) are invited to meet the author at an event on Thursday, Oct. 31. Penny will sit down with WGAL news reporter Anne Shannon to share her writing process, how she finds inspiration and more during the talk, which will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, beginning at 1 p.m.
Hosted by the Council of Friends of Public Libraries of Lancaster County and Midtown Scholar Bookstore-Cafe, the author event will raise funds for all of the public libraries in the county, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, who is a member of the Council of Friends.

Beyond making services available to veterans, the Lancaster Vet Center (LVC) has a desire to make sure those benefits are being used. LVC wants to serve veterans in much the same way that veterans served others.
“Some veterans will say, ‘Why me? Why do I deserve this?’’’ said Phil Grant, who’s been LVC’s director since February of 2022.
“The reason is because your service qualified you for these services. There’s no fee. There’s no cost. The eligibility doesn’t expire. They earned it through their time in the military.”
“Our motto is ‘Connection, Camaraderie, Community,’” continued Grant. “We want to live up to that. When you come here, you’ll be able to connect with your vet community and build that camaraderie. That’s
Organization opens retail shop
Hope Within Ministries has opened a retail shop, the Treasure Trove - also known as the Trovethat repurposes furniture and other items. The Trove will be open to shoppers on Friday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Other upcoming hours will be on Fridays, Oct. 25 and Nov. 22, and Saturdays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 23. All proceeds from the Trove will directly support Hope Within Ministries.
Hope Within Ministries provides free primary care at its Community Health Center, located on East Harrisburg Pike in Elizabethtown, for uninsured, low-income residents of Dauphin, Lebanon, and Lancaster counties. Hope Within Dental and Counseling Services are donation-based and incomebased, respectively. The Community Health Center is operated by part-time staff members and volunteers, and it is open to those
who meet eligibility guidelines.
The idea for the Trove was born out of Hope Within Ministries’ pop-up Holiday Shop, a once-ayear retail display that was held at Christmas inside the Community Health Center. In 2024, a building on the same property as the clinic became available for a larger retail display.

The Trove features home d é cor and gifts. Many of the items are making fresh appearances after being brought out of attics, basements, and closets. In its Creative Corner, the Trove offers items by local artisans, including slate slabs that feature landscapes and passages from Scripture, sea shells with floral designs that can be used as dishes for rings or other small objects, and illustrations and paintings.

event, because no matter where you live in Lancaster County, this event will support your public library,” she said. “Our proceeds are divided between all 17 libraries, the Bookmobile and the Be READy Rover, which focuses on early learning.”
Established in 2000, the Council of Friends of Public Libraries is composed of volunteers who are committed to promoting reading countywide. Over the years, the organization has raised more than $229,000 for local libraries.

though they are murder mysteries.
“When someone opens a Louise Penny book, they know what they’re going to get,” she said, noting that all of the books in the Gamache series are set in Three Pines. Penny’s books have won multiple honors, including nine Agatha Awards, given to mystery books, and they have been translated into 31 languages.
Although fans of Penny’s books will be drawn to the author’s talk, Steinhauer noted that the Council of Friends’ events bring in a wide audience.
“We have some fans of the event itself, not just the author,” she said. “We have people who love being at an event where the main focus is authors and their writing style. They have the freedom to ask the author questions during a question-and-answer portion of the event. We open it up to the audience so people feel a real connection with the whole process of being an author. We also have people who feel closer to these authors who they have admired for years by coming into the library and checking out a book, and now they get to meet them in person.”
“There’s a core group of Louise Penny fans who are very loyal to her and love her books,” Steinhauer remarked. “They love that the books are an ongoing series, like a soap opera, with the main character showing up in every one. People get very attached to that character.” Penny has shared that her late husband, Michael, inspired the character of Armand Gamache, and Penny described Michael as “kindly, thoughtful, generous, a man of courage and integrity, who both loved and accepted love.”
Steinhauer said Penny’s books are also popular because they bring a cozy familiarity to readers, even

Finally, ECCC maintains a 4-star rating from Keystone STARS. Keystone STARS is Pennsylvania’s quality rating and improvement system (QRIS). A QRIS is a continuous quality improvement system to approach, assess, and communicate the level of quality in early and school-age care and education programs.
Child care programs within Keystone STARS earn a STAR 1 to STAR 4 rating based on quality standards that measure staff education, classroom/learning environment, and other criteria.

States military veterans through one-on-one counseling, group therapy, veteran events and outreach programs. A branch of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and affiliated with the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Hospital, LVC also works with other outside organizations to resolve any difficulty a veteran might encounter.
“We are here to help veterans and their families readjust to life after their experience in the military,” said Grant. “It’s a lot of moving pieces. We want to help the community know who we are and what we do. We work with veterans for very specific treatment plans. We maintain relationships in the community to get them a higher echelon of care if that’s necessary.”
LVC serves between 80 and 100 veterans from Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties each month. According to a 2021 census, those counties are home to a total of 26,351 veterans.
“We have vets who have been in combat,” said Grant. “We have some vets who are out of active duty and just want to connect with the community. Some have PTSD (post-trau-
matic stress disorder). Some are just trying to successfully transition from the military and move on. It’s a wide swatch.”
“Once veterans know we exist, some will determine it’s not something they really need, and they’ll spread the word,” added Grant.
“These benefits exist because people use them. If they weren’t used the funding would disappear. No one is taking a service away from someone else. Some vets don’t need the services. Some are good right now and can come back if they need to.”
One of 12 veterans’ centers in the state, LVC was established in 2010. As a whole, the veterans’ center program was established in 1979 and now

operates 300 branches nationwide.
“We want to give veterans a place where they can come so they can live their best lives, not just for themselves but also for their families,” Grant said. “It’s not just for them; it’s also for everyone in their circle. For the veteran community in general, it’s sometimes hard to come to the table and trust that systems are going to do what they say they are going to do. Where we could do a better job is pounding the streets, getting the word out and showing the veteran community they can trust us.”

As summer winds down, the residents of St. John’s Herr Estate are ready to serve up fun, flavor and fantastic finds during the annual Fall Fest. The event will be held at the retirement community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The indoor yard sale will feature a large variety of items, said Carolyn Livingston, who is helping to organize the event.
“We have it set up in departments,” she said. “We have jewelry. We have baked goods. We line up paintings along the walls in the second-floor hallway. We have items for the kitchen, decorative items, puzzles, seasonal items, electronics, linens. We have oodles and oodles of books, CDs, DVDs and other mixed media.”
As resident Mary Miller stated, “You could almost decorate your entire apartment with everything you find here.”
New this year, visitors to Fall Fest
will have the opportunity to win a handmade quilt as well.
Along with yard sale items, Fall Fest will feature a variety of food.
Baked goods prepared by residents will be for sale, as well as hot dogs, sloppy joes and beverages.
Chicken corn soup, prepared by the St. John’s Herr Estate chef, will be available by the bowl or quart.
“People can take their food to go, or they can sit in our dining room and eat here,” Livingston said.
Fall Fest has been held at St. John’s for more than 20 years. Items for sale are donated by residents and their families, and a group of people helps to sort and price everything.
“Originally, we started sorting and pricing a few weeks before Fall Fest,” Livingston said. “Last year, we started in April. This year, we started in March. We had so much fun. On Saturday mornings, we would get together and sort and price. We just had a great time.”
Over the years, Fall Fest has grown significantly, she shared. It

started out just in the chapel of the residence but has since moved into neighboring spaces.
“We’ve had to keep expanding,” she said. “There are items in the chapel. The rotunda has puzzles and children’s items and jewelry. Our rec room has been taken over by baked goods, and we had to move the food into the dining room.”
Proceeds from Fall Fest are used for a variety of purposes, including to provide holiday gifts for staff and residents in personal care, as well as supporting St. John’s benevolent
fund and local organizations such as Hands Across the Street, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Columbia Public Library and Bookmobile and children’s programs of Luthercare, the parent organization of St. John’s Herr Estate.
“This is our major fundraiser,” said resident Gloria Gordon, who added that Fall Fest will offer something for everyone. “The prices are great. Everything is priced to sell.”
Fall Fest is a cash-only event. Free parking is available in a large lot at St. John’s Herr Estate.
