When Sylvia Spagnolo was sworn in as commander of the American Legion Post 329 in Elizabethtown, she made history. Spagnolo became the first female commander of the post, located at 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown. In her new position, she’s working hard on another kind of history - making sure the service of veterans is never forgotten.

“The American Legion does a lot for our veterans and a lot for the community, which was important to me,” Spagnolo noted. “Locally, they participate in events like the Memorial Day parade, provide service to the VA hospital and raise money for local organizations. I enjoy the community of the club and being around other veterans.”

with dance music, the event will feature hors d’oeuvres, water and soda, with a cash bar available. A basket giveaway will help raise funds for the theater, McCrady said. “We’re doing five big baskets,” she stated, noting that themes will include tailgating and “pamper yourself.” A quilt made by Ruth Shoop and donated by the Madara family will also be featured.

Proceeds from the dance party will help the theater continue its mission of providing community access to the arts, McCrady said, noting that an architect is currently completing a master plan for the building. “Right now, we’re using pews as seats in the theater,” she stated, explaining that the space is a former church. “We’re looking at updating to theater seating, updating the bathrooms and making other improvements.”

A dance fundraiser will support Marietta Center for the Arts.

Although the event is intended to raise funds for the theater, McCrady hopes it will serve another purpose as well. “We want to open our doors to the public, so they know we exist,” she remarked. “We want to expose people to the creative arts and let them know everything that goes on in this building.”

Since 2011, Encore! has participated in the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards, which recognize local students for outstanding work in a high school play or musical. The troupe has earned 35 nominations, seven honorable mentions and nine Apollo Awards.

Encore! was started in 2001 by Panyard, Debra Bell, Vicki Dincher and a group of moms from the Learning Center homeschool co-op as a way to

give homeschool students in central Pennsylvania the same type of theatrical opportunities available that they would have in conventional schools.

“It is a play often performed by high school groups because it stands the test of time,” stated Panyard. “The issues presented, including prejudice ... are relevant today, and they are displayed in real, emotional ways through the lines of the script. Everyone should take

The play focuses on 12 jury members who must decide whether a 19-year-old man is guilty of murder. Eleven jurors initially vote that the man is guilty of the crime and then try to convince the one holdout to change his vote.

Members of the theater troupe represent various school districts in central Pennsylvania. The cast of “12 Angry Jurors” includes Ian Riethmiller of Camp Hill as the judge/guard and Morghan Norcott of Marietta as the foreman. Members of the jury include the following: Josiah Evans of Elizabethtown, Landon Hunsicker of Mechanicsburg, Emily Norcott of Marietta, Lily Patota of Marietta, Giselle Bartlett of Lancaster, Callaghan Petrosky of Lancaster, Emma Riethmiller of Camp Hill, Brock Sunday of Annville, Seth Snyder of Middletown, MaryKate Kenny of Harrisburg and Felicity Younts of Maysville.

The director of “12 Angry Jurors” is Jill Panyard, who has been directing Encore! plays for 18 years. She is also the head of the Theatre Academy at the Hershey Area Playhouse, directing and teaching students in grades one through 12.

The ride will occur rain or shine. There is a fee per rider with a discount for passengers. Proceeds will benefit Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. For more information, call 717-330-0755 or search for “SWEET RIDE Motorcycle Poker Chip Run” on Facebook.

It’s a different dynamic. It is intense and emotions fly.”

E-town’s Braden Cummings makes the catch over Lower Dauphin’s Logan Chiara in the Bears’ 41-28, nonleague win in Hersheypark Stadium on September 9.

The girls’ soccer team hit their first bump of the 2022 season on September 7th, falling to Ephrata, 2-1, thanks to two second half Mountaineer goals. Lily Heistand, with help from Jena Witters, had given E-town an early lead but Ephrata was able to flip things in the second half. Keegan Miller absorbed the loss with five saves.

on September 8th breaking up E-town’s 3-0 start. Mikaela Condran picked up the lone goal in the opening frame, but the Comets pulled away for the win from there.

BOYS’ SOCCER

As you might expect with a 41-point outburst, the offense was humming, totaling 545 yards with a near perfect split of 277 rushing yards and 268 passing yards. Josh Rudy posted a stellar outing, completing 21-of-24 passes with two scores. Braden Cummings snagged 10 passes for 208 yards and both scores while Logan Lentz and Hayden Haver combined for 204 yards and four TDs on the ground.

E-town made it two in a row by topping Northeastern 2-0 on the 10th. Miller needed just one save to post the shutout. Witters netted the first score again, this time it was Hein with the assist. Meiley Shuck added a second half insurance goal.

The tennis team ran its winning streak to four matches with a 7-0 victory over Cocalico on Sept 8th and a 6-1 win over Donegal on the 13th. First 3-0 Start Since

Bell continued his two save run, this time in a 6-1 win over Manheim Central on the 13th. Five different Bears scored with only Stark lighting the lamp twice. Giron, Garcia, Kai Laszakovits and Noah Locke picked up the remaining goals while Flory finished with four assists with Schoenberger adding two more.

The Lady Bears wasted no time getting back on track, topping Hempfield 4-1 on the 13th. Pope picked up the win despite no saves. Condran picked up two scores, one with help from Reagan Flory with Kendra Griffie and Lyla Fair accounting for the remaining two goals.

The Bears used a 4-1 win over Manheim Central on the 13th for their second three game winning streak of the young season. Witters kept her run of scoring first intact, using a Heistand pass for this score. Shuck made it 2-0 in the 26th minute with Heistand finding Witters for another score in the 27th minute. Heistand, with help from Bruno, finished the scoring. Miller finished with four saves.

squad to a 4-1 win over Red Lion on the 8th. Flory posted a hat trick of the assist variety, setting up Jason Stark, Dax Kelly, and Zach Verghese to push E-town to a 3-0 lead. Tavan Schoenberger tacked on the final score with Owen Mowrer providing the setup.

You can’t win them all may be an old movie, but it fits when talking sports as evidenced by the field hockey team’s 8-1 loss to Penn Manor

That was a long time coming. The last time the Elizabethtown football team started a season 3-0 was in 2017, until now. With a 41-28 triumph over Lower Dauphin on September 9th the Bears remain undefeated.

Two more Bell saves came on the 10th, this time allowing Elizabethtown to collect a 3-0 win over Northeastern. Flory continued his impressive run, setting up Caleb Garcia for the game’s initial score while converting Xavier Giron’s pass for the final score. In between it was Schoenberger finding Kelly for a 2-0 lead.

The Bears’ Bradley Candy sets up to block Lower Dauphin’s Gerald Sanders in E-town’s 41-28, nonleague victory in Hersheypark Stadium on September 9.

The boys’ soccer team followed the same script, a loss to Ephrata followed by wins over Red Lion, Northeastern and Manheim Central. The Bears suffered the same 2-1 final opposite Ephrata on the 7th with Hayden Flory’s goal in the 3rd minute not enough to withstand two Mountaineer goals in the second half. Tyler Bell finished with two saves.

In between E-town made the short trip to Milton Hershey for their annual field hockey tournament. E-town opened with a 5-0 win over the host Lady Spartans but dropped the championship game to Newport 2-1.

Elizabethtown got right back to winning, topping Red Lion by a 5-1 final one day later. This time Miller’s five saves were enough to secure the win. That was thanks in large part to Heistand who scored twice while setting up Danielle Bruno and Kylie Hein. Witters got things started in the second minute, taking a Hailey Sheetz pass, and redirecting it into the net before setting up Heistand’s first score.

Despite the two-score final margin, things started tight with both sides scoring twice in the opening frame. E-town started to pull away in the second with Cummings hauling in his second 23-yard TD of the game coupled with Haver’s one yard plunge that made it 28-21 at the break. Lentz iced the game with his final two touchdowns that pushed Elizabethtown’s lead to 41-21 before LD tacked on a late score to set the 41-28 final.

The Tapas Shindig will raise funds for North Star Initiative.

Tapas Shindig Will Benefit North Star Initiative

Giving women an opportunity to hope again. That’s part of the mission of North Star Initiative (NSI), a nonprofit that works to combat human trafficking. You can help support that mission by attending the Tapas Shindig. The fundraising event will be held on Friday, Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.Theevening will feature networking time, a silent auction, tapas and mocktails, followed by a program, a live auction and dessert and coffee. This is the fourth year for the Tapas Shindig, said Janelle Esbenshade, interim executive director of NSI. “In 2019, we wanted to create an event that was nontraditional from the typical sit-down dinner experience,” she explained. “(We wanted) to offer individuals an opportunity to connect with one another in the community over good food and drinks while learning about the mission of North Star and how they can help support survivors of sex trafficking.”

“The program is strengthsbased, tailored to the survivors’ individual needs and matched to their current stage of change,” Esbenshade stated. “Each woman participates in individual and group therapy; has access to basic medical, dental and legal services; and receives an education and jobskills training. Our goal is for each survivor to leave The Harbor fully restored so she can return to the community and enjoy a life of sustained independence.”NSIestimates that tens of thousands of people are victims of sex trafficking in the United States, and the organization turns away up to 10 survivors a week due to lack of space. To serve more survivors, NSI launched a capital campaign to raise funds to build the Survivor Center adjacent to The Harbor. Along with providing restoration services and treatment for local survivors who do not

NSI was founded in 2010 with a goal of providing physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual care with a Christ-centered focus. The organization operates The Harbor, a restoration home and program for female survivors of human trafficking.

Greystone Manor Plans Horse Show

Anne Wissinger rides Violet in the 2021 horse show. She is accompanied by (from left) William Devorick, Hannah Zimmerman, and her instructor, Ellen Barnes.

Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual horse show on Saturday, Sept. 24. This year’s show is titled “Horses and Heroes” and is inspired by the everyday heroes who helped the community come through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first class will start at 9 a.m., and the show will conclude around 3:30 p.m. Board member and equestrian Marilu Garofola will serve as the judge.

During the show, the 37 featured participants will demonstrate their achievements in equitation over the year. Each participant will guide his or her horse through a hero-themed obstacle course. Groups of heroes represented in the obstacle course include medical professionals, caretakers, volunteers, first responders, educators, members of the military, and service animals.

Nathan Buckwalter rides Sir Sampson during the 2021 horse show. He is accompanied by (from left) board member Kathy Phillips, barn assistant Diane Garrett, and his instructor, Ellen Barnes.

GMTRC will also have several local heroes at the event to welcome guests and share

sponsors and advertisers.

For 41 years, GMTRC has been offering therapeutic riding lessons and equine-assisted learning to children and adults with special needs. Clients’ diagnoses include Down syndrome, neurological injuries, autism, depression, and anxiety. GMTRC’s therapeutic riding program seeks to aid clients in overcoming some of the challenges associated with their diagnoses with the help of 11 specially trained horses and ponies.
