How did you spend your summer vacation? If you’re Josh Curry, a senior at Lancaster County Career & Technology Center, you took a bike ride. A very long, very challenging bike ride.
Josh, who is the son of Anita Curry of Lititz, participated in the Adirondack Boys Summer Challenge Ride with Lifecycles, an organization that promotes character building and faith development through bicycling. For a week in late July and early August, Josh rode more than 350 miles from Pennsylvania to Whiteface Mountain at the north end of the Adirondack Mountains.
“Some of the highlights were the beautiful scenery in upstate New York, the amazing food and great fellowship and discipleship,” he said.
Challenge Ride is an accurate name for the trip, he stated, adding, “Some of the challenges were days with a lot of climbing.” The route included traveling along the Susquehanna River to its source at Cooperstown, N.Y., across the Erie Canal and into the mountains, finishing with a ride to the 4,867-foot summit of Whiteface Mountain.
Josh has been participating in Lifecycles for four years. He encourages other students to join the group, noting, “There is no other organization like it, and it will build your character.”
Character building is something volunteer Al Vega has noticed during his seven years with the organization. Like Josh, Al participated in a Challenge Ride this summer.
He drove a support vehicle for a girls’ team that rode from Manistee, Mich., to Mackinac Island. The ride covered 230 miles

“Almost every woman knows someone whose youthful plans were upset during their late teen years,” said Judy Kay Bard, chair of the Women for Women scholarship offered by
the Elizabeth Hughes Society. “Sometimes family problems demanded full-time assistance; sometimes the young woman just felt abandoned amid outside pressures. And that is just the sort of situation Elizabeth Hughes members created this

With new move, Jewel David Ministries expands services
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
To better serve clients and expand its counseling offerings, Jewel David Ministries (JDM) has moved to a new location. The nonprofit is now located at 29 S. Market St., Suite 201, Elizabethtown.
The move comes after 11 years at the organization’s previous location in Elizabethtown, said Dolores Reidenbach, founder and president of JDM.
The Christian counseling organization began in 2010.
“JDM started its counseling center with the Lights of Hope Thrift as a means to share our service story and generate income from a social enterprise to support our mission,” Reidenbach explained. “JDM continues to provide counseling services for uninsured and underinsured people that desire professional services but could not otherwise afford them.”

along the scenic coast of Lake Michigan and took place over a week in mid-August.
“The girls and leaders had an amazing experience,” Al shared. “The beautiful scenery stops along Lake Michigan and biking around Mackinac Island were highlights, with plenty of time for photos and exploring.”
Al first participated in a Challenge Ride with Lifecycles in 2018, when he
rode along with his then13-year-old son on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Trail from McKeesport to Washington, D.C. In 2019, they rode from New Holland, where they live, to Boston. In 2020, they completed a loop from Gettysburg to Harpers Ferry to Columbia as a substitution for a planned ride that was postponed due to the pandemic. The postponed trip eventually happened in
2021, he said.
“I joined the 60-day TransAmerica ride from Oregon to Delaware,” he recalled of the 2021 trip. “In 2022, we rode from Niagara Falls to Lubec, Maine, and in 2023, from Portland, Maine, to Philadelphia.”
Al said he was impressed with Lifecycles as soon as he met the organization’s director, Lee DeRemer.
“The camaraderie among the leaders and their enthusiasm for the program immediately drew me in,” Al said. “I attended the first ride of the season and saw the strong bonds between the boys and leaders and how they learned from one another. I kept coming back, and now my whole family participates.”
Founded in 2014 by Lee and his wife, Marcie, Lifecycles has a mission to build young men and women of character through weeknight local rides throughout Lancaster County as well as Saturday rides and
the weeklong Summer Challenge Rides. There is no charge for teens to participate in Lifecycles, and bikes and equipment are provided if needed. In the county, rides leave from Marietta and Landisville. Since its inception, the program has served more than 350 teens who have ridden more than 368,000 miles.
“Lifecycles offers a Christ-centered outdoor adventure that fosters growth, character and leadership in teens through biking and teamwork,” Al said. “Teens learn essential life skills - from leadership and teamwork to money management and healthy living - all under the guidance of dedicated mentors who help them transition into adulthood with integrity and confidence.”
Lifecycles is open to any teens in Lancaster County. The program runs from April through October. For more information, visit www.lifecyclesteam.org.

Girl Scout troops seek members
The Elizabethtown/ Donegal Girl Scouts organization is seeking new members. With a mission to build girls of courage, confidence and character, the Girl Scouts of the United States of America seeks to provide a safe and supportive environment where young girls can thrive. The organization was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low.
Locally, the Elizabethtown/Donegal Girl Scouts enables girls to develop life skills, engage in community service and explore their interests. Troops in the Elizabethtown/Donegal area are led by volunteers who are committed to fostering a sense of leadership and self-assurance in each girl. From outdoor adventures and STEM activities to arts and crafts, the Girl Scouts program offers a diverse range of experiences. Through a variety of hands-on activities, girls can earn badges that recognize their achievements in areas like camping skills, first aid, entrepreneurship and environmental stewardship. The Girl
Scouts also emphasizes the importance of community involvement, encouraging members to take part in service projects that make a positive impact on their neighborhoods. In addition to the skills they acquire, Girl Scouts build friendships with their peers. For many girls, the bonds they form with fellow Scouts become lifelong friendships.
The Elizabethtown/ Donegal Girl Scouts welcome girls from kindergarten through high school. The program is divided into different levels, each tailored to the developmental stage of the girls:
Daisies, open to girls in kindergarten and first grade, start their Girl Scouting journey with activities that introduce them to the values of friendship, teamwork and respect.
Brownies, for girls in second and third grades, dive deeper into exploring their interests and earning badges, all while enjoying outdoor adventures and creative projects. At the Junior Girl Scout level for fourth- and fifth-graders, girls begin
to take on more leadership roles within their troop, planning activities and working on community service projects.
Cadettes, for girls in sixth through eighth grades, focus on building their leadership skills and exploring more complex topics, such as financial literacy, science and technology.
Senior Scouts, for girls in ninth and 10th grades, and Ambassadors, for 11th- and 12th-graders, offers opportunities for girls to take
on significant leadership responsibilities, mentor younger girls and work on projects that can lead to earning the Girl Scout Gold Award.
For more information, visit www.gshpa.org, contact local troop leaders at gsleader16@gmail.com or search for “Elizabethtown/ Donegal Girl Scouts” on Facebook. Financial assistance is available to ensure that every girl can participate. Adult volunteers are sought.
Annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction slated
The 47th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, beginning at 9 a.m.
The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $19 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year.
In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and longterm cleanup and rebuilding efforts from disasters such as earthquakes in Haiti and tornadoes and floods in
Pennsylvania.
Separate auctions include the main auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, two silent auctions, the heifer auction, the coin auction, and pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once.
Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to
be bid on only by children. A children’s store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, as well as face painting. A balloon artist will create balloon animals for kids, as well. Also available for youngsters, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides and pony rides, the latter of which will be offered for a nominal donation.
Food is a large part of the auction each year, with options including made-
on-site Amish soft pretzels and doughnuts, a cafeteria, food stands, breakfast, and a chicken potpie dinner. Other components of the auction include an area for arts and crafts and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked goods, including homemade pies.
To find out more about the auction, visit www .brethrenauction.org, call 717-823-2745, or pick up an auction booklet at many local retailers.
Local Girl Scouts who recently earned the Gold Award include (from left) Emily Fasig, Sarah Hamm, Olivia Nilsen and Kate Datorre.
Bidders take part in a previous auction.

Program to focus on ABLE accounts
Individuals receiving government benefits often have limits on how much money they can save before their benefits are affected. But these limits make it difficult to save for housing, a car or educational or other goals. ABLE accounts, which are tax-advantaged savings accounts that can fund disability-related expenses, were created to assist individuals with disabilities to overcome these barriers.
Hope Served will host an ABLE account community training program with Diana Fishlock from
the Pennsylvania Treasury Department on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Attendees will learn who is eligible for the accounts, how to open an account and how to utilize an ABLE account for the benefit of themselves or a loved one.
Fishlock is one of Pennsylvania’s main experts on the topic. The training will be held at Hope Served’s offices at 201 W. High St., Manheim.
To register, contact Rachelle at office@hope served.org or 717-3479785 to ensure adequate seating and refreshments.

With the move, JDM will expand its counseling services and add mental and emotional wellness services.
“Beyond offering accessible counseling services, JDM has a team of experienced counselors,” Reidenbach shared. “While we are planning to expand our team, our current team (members) have been serving the community for over 12 years. Our team is credentialed and trained as professional counselors and can offer a faith-based approach to counseling if that is kindred with the client’s treatment plan.”
The organization moved on Aug. 31 and is still in the process of setting up fully, but Reidenbach predicts a bright future for JDM.
“We will be offering mental and emotional wellness services, and we ask the community to stay tuned on our newly launched website and Facebook page,” she said, noting that the move also prompted the organization to create a new logo. “We will begin posting upcoming group therapies, wellness programs for adults and teens, events and fundraisers as

scholarship to amend. Their encouraging financial support for a high school graduate over 25 can give a jumpstart for a woman to have more self-esteem and earn independence.”
This year’s recipient of the Women for Women scholarship is Virginia Mae Smith-Ross. Members of the Elizabeth Hughes Society presented the award to Smith-Ross in July.
“Virginia Smith-Ross stands out, on paper or in person, with her cheerful, enthusiastic readiness for whatever life may bring,”
Bard explained, noting that Smith-Ross is a single mother who is new to Elizabethtown and who currently works two jobs to support her children.
“She is also developing an online business selling organic lotions and healing balms. The award money will help her learn better online business strategies.”
The Elizabeth Hughes Society has been awarding the Women for Women scholarship for 15 years.
“Recent award winners have studied and qualified for careers long-sought or taken courses for new careers to support themselves,” Bard said. “Their thank-you letters warm hearts.”
Founded almost a century
ago, the Elizabeth Hughes Society began with a group of civic-minded women who wanted to start a local library. They accomplished that goal and continue to support the Elizabethtown Public Library as well as other local organizations such as the Elizabethtown Fire Department and Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS).
The group meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. The public is invited to the meetings, which feature programs of interest to the local community. On Oct. 28, the group will host “E-Town Live,” a presentation by Tony Gibble and Clint Gibble on new trends in Elizabethtown business. On Nov. 25, the meeting will feature information on the Catherine Hershey Early Childhood and Parenting Program, which will soon open a branch at Rheems Elementary. The Women for Women scholarship accepts applications annually beginning in the spring through June 1. Applications may be found in local libraries and churches or may be obtained by calling 717-413-6254.
Holy Spirit Lutheran Church’s Brunner pipe organ will be featured at the upcoming hymn sing.
Medal is cherry on top of Casey Kaufhold’s Olympic experience
BY JEFF FALK
Olympic athlete. United States of America Olympic athlete. United States of America Olympic medalist. Each has its own specific ring to it. For Casey Kaufhold, they’re titles that all hold special meaning.
At 20 years of age, Kaufhold is, and always will be, all three. The 2022 graduate of Conestoga Valley High
School is now more than a month removed from competing at her second Summer Olympic Games, and in many ways, the glow has yet to wane.
“I’m still riding the high because I worked so hard to get there,” said Kaufhold, one of the finest female archers in the world. “I’m definitely still settling in from the experience. So few people get an opportunity to

compete at the Olympics. So, to do it twice by the age of 20 and get a medal, I’m grateful and thankful.”
“I think the best part of competing was having my family there,” continued Kaufhold. “I also competed at Tokyo (in 2021), and I couldn’t have my family there (because of the pandemic). To get a medal and have them there was really special.”
On Aug. 2 in Paris, during competition in the 2024 Summer Olympics, Kaufhold and teammate Brady Ellison captured a bronze medal in the mixed team archery event with a 6-2 victory over India. The medal was the first ever for the United States in the mixed team archery event, and Kaufhold became the first American woman to earn an Olympic medal in archery since 1988.
Earlier in the Games, Kaufhold had finished 17th in the women’s individual archery event and was part of a USA squad that came in ninth in the women’s team archery competition.
“The women’s individual and team events were the first two events I competed in, and they didn’t go the way I would’ve liked,” said Kaufhold. “I struggled with nerves. When I went into the mixed team competition, I wanted to stick with my process. I didn’t feel I shot as well as I could have, and I wanted to show what I could do. I wanted to shoot the way I was in practice. My goal was to come home with a medal. I didn’t want to come home empty handed.”
At the Summer Olympics in Tokyo - which had been postponed a year because of COVID-19 - the then-17year-old Kaufhold finished 17th in the individual

women’s archery competition and was part of an American group that came in seventh in the women’s team archery competition.
“Tokyo was totally a different experience,” said Kaufhold. “It’s hard to even compare. I was 17, and I felt like I was new to everything.”
“For archers, the Olympics are our biggest event,” Kaufhold added. “Because it’s every four years, there’s a lot of hype around it, and it’s very prestigious. It’s hard to get there, and you can feel the pressure when you’re there.”
Since taking up the sport at the age of 7, Kaufhold has combined dedication, talent and skill with family tradition to become one of the top female archers nationally and internationally. It’s a foundation that has put her in position to compete at the next few Summer Olympic Games.
“I’d like to compete in Los Angeles in 2028, and in 2032, in Australia,” said Kaufhold. “I’m pretty locked in as far as my career goes. I’m someone who likes having a plan and I like having things set up. The Olympics have been a goal of mine since I was 12. To get there twice, feels great. It’s very fulfilling to have accomplished it by 20.”
Accordionists plan meeting
The First Lancaster Accordion Group (FLAG) will meet on Sunday, Sept. 29, at Zion Church of Millersville, 317 N. George St., Millersville. The meeting will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. For additional details, contact Miranda Hoffman at 717-940-4762.
