A weekend of family fun
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Elizabethtown is the place to be for two fun events on Friday, Oct. 13, and Sunday, Oct. 15.
For October’s 2nd Friday, the theme will be “Friday the 13th Hocus Pocus,” and the festivities will feature a variety of family-friendly activities from 4 to 8 p.m., said Clint Gibble of LIV-Etown. “The Sanderson Sisters will return this year for a meet-and-greet, and there will be a
free scavenger hunt - The Spells of E-Town,” he said. “Everyone that completes the hunt will be entered into a drawing for $150 in gift cards to downtown Elizabethtown businesses, and everyone gets a candy prize, provided by The Candy Unicornium candy shop located off the square.” Scavenger hunt sheets will be available until 7 p.m. to give participants a chance to complete them. Girl Scouts earn Silver Award
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Asmembers of a local swim team, friends Eleni Brehm, Valerie Hall, Emily Addams and Brianna Thatcher observed a recurring problem.
People using Willowood Swim Club on Bainbridge Street in Elizabethtown weren’t doing their best to help the environment.
“We noticed that Willowood had no recycling bins, and all the recyclables went into the trash,” Brianna recalled.
All four girls are members of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 71686, so they decided to take action to solve the problem and earn their Silver Award in the process.
“For our project, we made a butterfly garden at Willowood Swim Club to replace the rose bushes close to the public bathroom,” said Valerie, who is the daughter of
Jeremy and Christine Hall of Mount Joy. “We fundraised by selling bricks that you could put your family or swimmer’s name on. We then used the money to get recycling bins for the pool, because we realized that a lot of people bring cans to the pool.”
teach kids about recycling, plants and pollinators,” shared Eleni, the daughter of Matthew and Christine Brehm of Elizabethtown. “We put the painted rocks in the garden for decoration.”
The project challenged the girls to push outside their comfort zones and ask people to buy bricks, and it took a physical effort as well to create the garden space. It was all worth it in the end, Emily said, noting, “To me, the most fun part about the project was planting the flowers and watching them grow.”

The Girl Scouts began working on the project in April and completed it in August. In addition to selling bricks and creating the garden, the girls came up with a way to involve younger members of the swim club.
“We held a rock painting activity after swim practice one day to
Troop leader Christine Hall was impressed with the girls’ dedication to the project and their desire to earn the Silver Award, which is the highest award Girl Scouts in sixth, seventh and eighth grades can earn.
“I am very proud of the girls,” she commented. “This was a big project that they worked on all summer long. I think they were all stretched

When she was a child, Tess Gerritsen couldn’t resist a good mystery book. “The first mystery novels I read were Nancy Drew books,” recalled the New York Times bestselling author of more than 30 novels. “I remember thinking, ‘I want to do that. I want to tell those kinds of stories.’”
Becoming an author wasn’t a straight course for Gerritsen, who will headline the Council of Friends of Public Libraries’ fall author event at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9.
“Being from a practical AsianAmerican family, my parents wanted me to do something more traditional for a career,” she said. She graduated from Stanford University and went to medical school, eventually becoming a doctor. Her desire for storytelling never faltered, however, and when she was on maternity leave after the birth of her first son, she wrote her first novel, “Call After Midnight.” It was published in 1987, and by her third book, “Harvest,” Gerritsen made her New York Times bestseller debut in 1996.
She had started following her

Tony Gibble of LIV-Etown noted that the Pirates Plunder will include a scavenger hunt for One-Eye Willy’s treasure, and both kids and the young at heart can sign up to join the pirate crew, setting out on a voyage to find everything they’ll need to fit the part. “An eye patch, tattoo, physical training, your bandana and more will be provided by participating businesses and LIVEtown,” he said. “You’ll be able to fight a pirate. heart, and she didn’t plan to return to medicine. “We moved from Honolulu to Maine, and I was so determined to focus on my writing, I decided not to apply for a Maine medical license,” she said.
She took what she knew
from the medical field and put it into her books, which have been published in 40 countries and often have a tie to medicine. Publisher’s Weekly dubbed Gerritsen the “medical suspense queen,” but she also made a name for herself in the
industry for creating the “Rizzoli & Isles” series, focused on a partnership between two crime-solving women. The book series became a global hit and inspired the long-running TNT series of the same name.
Gerritsen will discuss her latest book, “The Spy Coast,” at her November talk, where she’ll be joined on stage by WITF’s Scott LaMar.
“I don’t do book readings, because I think they’re kind of boring,” she said with a laugh. “What I like to talk about is, ‘Where do ideas come from? What is my process of approaching writing a
new book? How do I develop characters? How do I keep going when I hit a wall?’”
Proceeds from Gerritsen’s appearance will benefit all of the public libraries in Lancaster County, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, leader of the Council of Friends.
“When I read Tess’ bio, I realized how unbelievable she is,” Steinhauer said. “It just goes to show you that her early passion manifested itself as an adult, and she was able to put that passion, along with her education and training as a doctor, into doing something she loves.”
Gerritsen said she hopes her story will inspire others
to follow their dreams, noting that she often hears from readers, many of whom have done just that. Sometimes, however, the stories she hears are sadder.
One reader told her he’d been an engineer all his life, but he had wanted to become a fashion designer. “He told me he really regretted his career choice,” she said. “I like to tell people, ‘Find a way to make what you want to do work for your own family circumstances. Carve out some time to do it.’”
The Council of Friends event will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley

Community invited to 5K and Fall Fest
For more than 20 years, Ginger Goudie taught students at The Janus School in Mount Joy, making an impact every day.
“She taught math, and she also taught our junior and senior success classes, where she helped students with internships and opportunities to be more involved in the community,” said James Dempsey, dean of students. “She was also a big fan of fall and a big fan of the outdoors. She was an incredible person who gave it her all in the classroom and outside the classroom for our students.”
Goudie passed away from cancer last November, and the staff members at The Janus School wanted to honor her memory. They are organizing the Ginger Goudie Memorial 5K and The Janus School Fall Fest on Saturday, Oct. 28. The events will be held at the school, 205 Lefever Road, Mount Joy.
“We think it’s absolutely important to remember her and her legacy,” noted Dempsey, who added that all profits from the 5K will support the Ginger Goudie Financial Aid Fund.
The 5K will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a kids’ halfmile fun run at 11:30 a.m. The
Model railroad club sets open houses
The Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will hold open houses on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7 and 8, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Attendees will be able to watch trains of various scales running on 1,600 feet of track in the club’s “train station,” which features seven display areas. The gauge sizes run from G scale (also called garden scale) to the tiny Z scale.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
The Railroad Club building is on Freemason Drive on the grounds of Masonic Village at Elizabethtown. Once on the campus, follow the directional signs. Ample parking is available.
For more information, call 717-287-2086 or visit www.facebook.com/Masonic villageMRRC. Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club was founded in 1997, and membership is open to the community. New members are welcome, and interested individuals may talk to any club member at the open houses.
Fall Fest will also begin at 11:30 a.m.
Medals will be awarded for various age groups in the 5K, and trophies will be presented to the top male and top female finisher.
The Fall Fest will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, including bounce houses, crafts and food. Food trucks on-site will be Gourmet Julie’s Way, Noel’s Café, Stoney’s Burgers and Fries, What’s For Supper and TJ’s Ice Cream.
The festivities are open to anyone in the community, and head of school Heather Strunk hopes the day will raise awareness of everything The Janus School does.
“We are the only K to 12 independent school for students with learning differences in southcentral Pennsylvania,” Strunk explained. “We serve students in six counties - Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York.”
The Janus School currently has 74 students enrolled, but new students are accepted throughout the school year, she noted.
“We’re working to empower our students to be the best versions of themselves and to become lifelong learners and

She emphasized that many parents comment on the support their children receive at The Janus School.
“Many of our students were not thriving in other placements,” she said. “They weren’t getting a lot of positive feedback, and the parents never heard things their child can do. We focus on strengths here. Children at The Janus School can feel seen, safe and valued.”

Performance issues that can affect older cars
Modern cars have much longer life spans than one may expect. Not too long ago, drivers often commemorated the milestone of their vehicles reaching the 100,000-mile mark. However, data from Car and Driver indicates the average vehicle now lasts around 12 years or roughly 200,000 miles. More advanced electric or hybrid vehicles may be able to go even farther, with some capable of reaching as many as 300,000 miles.
Thanks to advancements in technology, cars are more durable than ever, but that doesn’t make them immune from breakdowns or the need for repairs. A report from AAA found that more than two-thirds of service calls were for vehicles a decade or older. Here’s a look at some of the problems that can affect
older vehicles.
Among the problems older vehicles face are battery issues. The average car battery lasts between three and five years, according to Auto Zone. Batteries tend to show signs of wear at the four-year mark on average. Corrosion or dirt on battery terminals also can affect battery performance.
Older cars may also experience electrical system problems, caused by anything from burnt-out car fuses to bad or faulty electrical connections and contacts. Corroded or loose screws, nuts and wires can cause electrical issues, which may be more common in older vehicles that have significant mileage on them.
Vehicles may also have trouble with their suspension system, which consists
of springs, tires, shock absorbers, struts, anti-sway bars and other parts that connect the vehicle to the wheels. Suspension systems regulate the amount of bouncing in the vehicle while on the road and make it manageable. Eventually, all suspension systems wear out, and parts need to be serviced or replaced.
Evaporative emissions are another challenge. The evaporative system consists of a network of hoses, canisters and valves, and it helps vent pressure in the gas tank. An older vehicle may end up with a cracked hose that can cause a fuel leak. Hoses also may be compromised elsewhere in vehicles, so these points should be checked during routine maintenance.
As with other moving parts on a car, the brake sys-
tem wears down over time, and parts need to be replaced. Squealing, squeaking or a soft brake pedal are indicative of braking system issues and should be looked at by a mechanic promptly.
Modern vehicles are increasingly being controlled by computers. These computers handle a variety of features, including navigation and pairing to mobile phones, among others. Over time, systems may no longer work if there are no computer updates available. That means Bluetooth pairing may no longer function, or maps may not be current for GPS systems.
Due to technological advancements, cars and trucks have longer life spans than they used to. However, age is still a factor in the deterioration of vehicle systems.
How to conserve fuel without giving up driving
In today’s world, saving money is often a top priority for consumers, and bills paid at the gas pump are no exception. Drivers can follow a few simple tips to help save money on gas.
Lighten the load. How much weight is being carted around in a vehicle can directly affect the amount of gas it consumes. Remove any unnecessary items from the trunk or cargo area of a truck or SUV. Consider removing extra accessories, like roof racks or hitches.
Accelerate slowly. Resist the urge to gun it when beginning to move after a stop light or stop sign, as rapid acceleration wastes gas. Press the accelerator pedal gently to increase speed gradually and conserve fuel. Similarly, coast to a stop, rather than slamming on the brakes.
Don’t idle. Turn off the engine if the car will be idling for more than a minute. Modern engines do not need to be warmed up for more than 30 to 60 seconds, even when the weather is cold. Driving will warm
Warning signs that brakes are faltering
Drivers play a vital role in vehicle maintenance. Although diagnosing and fixing car problems is often best left to professionals, drivers who learn to recognize warning signs of various problems can prevent breakdowns and potentially costly repairs. Problems with the brake system are among the issues that drivers may learn to recognize.
Television shows and movies have lent credence to the notion that brake problems are marked by the sudden loss of a vehicle’s ability to stop. Although that can happen, warning signs of fading brake systems tend to be more subtle.
Certain noises are one of the signs that brakes may be failing. The most noticeable of these signs is a high-pitched squeal that occurs when drivers apply the brakes. Grinding sounds and noises like scratching and scraping also warrant a visit to a brake specialist.
Drivers may also notice an increase in the distance a vehicle travels before it stops after the brakes are applied. This issue may or may not require a brake replacement. In fact, it sometimes indicates that brake fluid levels are low, which can be remedied quickly and easily. However, an increase in stopping distance is significant enough that it should be brought to the attention of a brake specialist immediately.
Another warning sign of brake problems is that the vehicle noticeably pulls to one side as it comes to a stop. This behavior indicates that one side of the brakes is malfunctioning while the other is working properly. Like other issues with brakes, this one requires immediate attention from a professional.
Issues with brakes can be costly and dangerous, so it is important that drivers learn to recognize the warning signs of brake problems.
up the car faster than idling while parked, provided the car is driven moderately until the temperature gauge shows the car has reached the right temperature.
Consider whether to use air conditioning or put the windows down. While it’s true that the air conditioning will drain fuel when in use, driving with the windows open makes the vehicle less aerodynamic by causing drag. Some experts recommended leaving the windows down during slower city driving and using the air conditioning for higher speeds on the highway.
Keep tires properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can make a vehicle less efficient by causing more friction between tires and the roadway. Check the PSI rating for the tires and inflate accordingly. Many modern vehicles automatically alert drivers when tires are low on air.
Drive a consistent speed. When driving on the highway, switch to cruise control to maintain a consistent speed. This
action can reduce drag, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.
Stick to a maintenance schedule. Maintaining a vehicle by getting routine oil changes, fluid checks and
other simple upkeep helps a car or truck run properly, which can help conserve fuel.
These are just a few strategies drivers may employ to conserve fuel.

Schellhammer claims spot on Team USA
Local resident Kristi Schellhammer has qualified to participate in the WKC World Championships karate competition in Orlando in October.
Schellhammer, who has attention deficit disorder and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, enrolled in her first karate class in 2017 with the goal of improving her focus. During that first year in the sport, Schellhammer placed first in the Battle of Hershey Tournament, earning ribbons in both sparring and forms. Later that year, she earned a high green at the Fighting Dragons in Etown. Schellhammer had to train on her own during the pandemic, but in 2021, she was again winning tournaments, including first place in sparring and second place in forms at the Bucks County meet. That same year at the Battle of Hershey Tourna-
ment, she again placed first in sparring and second in forms.
In 2022, Schellhammer traveled to Pittsburgh, where she qualified for Team USA, and she then went to Detroit and won a gold medal along with the title grand champion. The icing on the cake came this past July at the Summer Shiai Competition, where she qualified for a spot on Team USA by placing first in weapons, second in sparring, and second in forms.
Schellhammer acknowledged the support of the Fighting Dragons and her family and friends in helping her to attain her martial arts accomplishments.
Donations are being accepted to help support Schellhammer’s trip to Orlando. For more details, call or text Schellhammer at 717-689-0439.

Fall Bazaar will feature treasures and bargains
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
You’re invited to go treasure hunting at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ. The church, located at 11 E. Elizabeth St., will hold its annual Fall Bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“You never know what you’re going to find,” said event chair Chrisie Emswiler. “Somebody’s junk is another person’s treasure. There’s treasure to be found here.”
The bazaar will feature tables set up both inside and outside the church, depending on the weather.
“We’ll have toys, glassware, books, stuffed animals, household items, baby items,” Emswiler noted. “We don’t have clothing, but we’ll have hats and linens. We’ll have some Christmas stuff.”
Free coffee and doughnuts will also be available during the event.
“We will also have at least three (giveaway) baskets,” she
said. “The church is putting together a Christmas basket with things like wrapping paper, bows, baking items for Christmas cookies. Someone else donated a light-up birdhouse, so we’ll give that away. And you do not need to be present to win.”
Proceeds from the Fall Bazaar are used by the church to support various missions and activities.
“We have a prayer blanket ministry,” Emswiler shared.
“We have a church member who makes blankets, and she prays over every knot that she puts in that blanket, and then the whole church will pray over the blanket. Then the blanket goes to someone who needs it who is in the hospital or sick or recently experienced a loss.”
She encourages everyone to come to the bazaar to hunt for a bargain. “Everything is priced to sell, and if you don’t like a price, make an offer,” she stated. “Starting at 1 p.m., most things will be marked down to
half price.”
Maytown Reformed Church holds worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m., both in person and on Zoom. Events like the bazaar help the church continue to operate even though the congregation is small.
“We are a small church, but we are mighty,” Emswiler said.
“We have a wonderful pastor, and everyone is very inviting. They include everybody, and it’s just a comfortable church.”
Donations are still being accepted for the bazaar and will be taken through Monday, Oct. 16. To make a donation, call or text Emswiler at 717-468-6601.
Circle Legacy Center begins Native American program series
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
For the first time in more than three years, Circle Legacy Center is offering a series of programs on the second Friday of every month. The goal of the series is to educate the community on the culture, history and traditions of Native Americans, as well as to raise awareness of modern issues. Each program will be hosted from 6 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., and participants are encouraged to bring a food item to share during a potluck dinner. Utensils, plates and cups will be provided.
Each program will highlight a different topic that pertains to Native American communities. The series kicked off with a meeting on Sept. 8 to welcome new participants and returning members, and Circle Legacy Center shared updates about its upcoming projects and plans for the remainder of the year. The organization also provided information on Every Child Matters, a movement that seeks to raise awareness of the abuse
of Native American children in residential schools. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also referred to as Orange Shirt Day, will be observed on Saturday, Sept. 30. Every year, observers of the holiday don orange clothing to represent the forced assimilation of indigenous peoples.
On Oct. 13, Circle Legacy Center will discuss Indigenous Peoples Day, which is observed by many communities on Oct. 9 instead of Columbus Day. The meeting will feature a presentation on past and present Native American groups in Lancaster. Circle Legacy Center’s program on Nov. 10 will offer Native American dishes for participants to enjoy as they discuss current economic, social and health issues of indigenous people. The meeting will also include a discussion on National Native American Heritage Month, which is annually designated as the month of November. On Dec. 8, Circle Legacy Center will host guest speaker Dave Costarella, who will share information on his project to help people experiencing home-
lessness in Lancaster city.
Circle Legacy Center was founded in 2007 by Victoria Valentine of Millersville, who also serves as the organization’s executive director. “I started out as an environmentalist, and I was always interested in Native American culture,” Valentine said. “As I learned more about it, I had a vision to make a bridge between the community and the Native American people, not only to educate people but to raise awareness of their needs.”
Although Circle Legacy Center has no physical headquarters, it remains actively involved with various local organizations. The nonprofit frequently participates in events at Blue Rock Heritage Center in Washington Boro and the Conestoga Area Historical Society. Some Circle Legacy Center board members are also active in similar groups such as the Carlisle Indian School Project, another nonprofit based in Conestoga. The project aims to build a heritage center and museum near the site of the original boarding school in Carlisle.

EASD welcomes new assistant superintendent
The Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD) recently welcomed Daphne Kirkpatrick to its leadership team as the new assistant superintendent. The board unanimously approved Kirkpatrick at its Aug. 22 regularly-scheduled action meeting. She is currently the director of education for the Milton Area School District, where she has served for the past nine years.
Kirkpatrick was hired following an extensive search process that involved a series of interviews. The interview team comprised district and school administrators, teachers and school board members.
Kirkpatrick’s hiring fills the void created when Karen Nell was elevated to the position of EASD superintendent. A start
date is being worked out with Kirkpatrick.
Kirkpatrick has extensive educational and leadership experience. Presently, she is responsible for evaluating positions, programs and course offerings across her current district. She also coordinates the curriculum, instruction and assessment efforts; directs the professional development, training and growth programs for all staff members; and monitors the ongoing evaluation of teaching and learning programs for the Milton Area School District.
In addition to her present role with the Milton Area School District, Kirkpatrick has served as acting superintendent, assistant superintendent and director of curricu-
lum, instruction and technology for the Midd-West School District in Middleburg as well as director of curriculum, instruction and technology and director of technology for the Danville Area School District in Danville. Kirkpatrick began her career in education as an elementary teacher for the Danville Area School District. Kirkpatrick is a member of various professional organizations.
Kirkpatrick holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Bloomsburg University, a Master of Science in instructional technology from Bloomsburg University and a doctorate in educational leadership from Pennsylvania State University. She received
supervisory certification in curriculum and instruction from Bloomsburg University and completed the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project from the Columbia University Teachers College in New York, N.Y.
VisionCorps opens new facility
VisionCorps opened its renovated Technology & Accessibility Center (TAC) on Aug. 24 at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Lancaster County commissioners - chair Ray D’Agostino, Josh Parsons, and John Trescotjoined Dennis Steiner, VisionCorps president/CEO, to officially open the new facility. A public open house was held on Sept. 6.
The TAC is used for individual assessments of clients who are blind or have vision impairments. It includes areas set up as a kitchen, a living or family room, an office, and a technology display area.
Clients can also use the TAC to try low-vision solutions such as task lighting, cell phone options, magnifiers, TV remotes, stove and microwave operation, kitchen tool prepara-
tion, and white cane instruction. In addition, clients can learn about technology topics such as computer operation, software, apps, magnifiers, and some wearable technology solutions.
A $100,000 grant was used for the creation of the TAC. This funding was provided through the American Rescue Plan Act.
The TAC, located on the second floor of VisionCorps, 244 N. Queen St., Lancaster, is open by appointment. For more information, call VisionCorps at 717-205-4141.
VisionCorps is a nonprofit with a goal of empowering people who are blind or vision impaired to attain independence by providing them with the tools and training, including employment, to empower them.
