For almost 20 years, Haldeman Mansion has showcased the autumn season at the Apple Fall Festival. This year’s festival will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, at the mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge.
The family-friendly event will feature fun for people of all ages, said Elaine Jackson, who is helping to organize the event. Activities for children will include apple games, crafts, coloring, flying disc throwing, jumping rope and more.
“Kids can play games and they can learn about Johnny Appleseed,” Jackson shared.
Drinks will be served by Riverview Café located on the property, and a variety of food will be sold by members of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society. The menu will include grilled Groff’s bratwurst, hot dogs, homemade baked beans, applesauce, soup, chips and a variety of apple desserts, such as apple dumplings, apple pie and apple cake. Drink options will include mint tea, coffee, smoothies, soda, cider and water.
A silent auction will include items donated by local individuals and businesses, and an apple cider making demonstration with free samples will be offered with Bainbridge resident Darl Williams using his antique cider
press. Live bluegrass music will be performed by Stone Mountain. Tina Mark will lead tours through the first floor of the mansion, which was the home of Samuel Haldeman, a renowned 19th-century naturalist. The building dates to the late 1700s. Projects of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society have included restoration of interior fireplaces as well as exterior work on the space between the mansion and the property’s summer kitchen, where the café is housed. Proceeds from the event will be used for ongoing restoration work at the mansion, which will house a museum dedicated to Haldeman in rooms on the first floor. Artifacts and objects for
“Donegal to Donegal” mural connects past to present
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On a wall of a building at 19 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, the past comes to life. The “Donegal to Donegal” mural, originally painted in 2002 by Wayne Fettro, depicts the journey of the Scots-Irish from County Donegal, Ireland, to Donegal Township in Elizabethtown. Over the years, the once-vibrant colors of the mural faded and the paint
began to peel. Understanding the mural’s importance, Elizabethtown Preservation Associates spearheaded a restoration project with funding provided by community donations. The newly restored artwork was unveiled at a ribbon cutting in late September.
Local artist Nancy Landis, a former director of the Winters Heritage House Museum, directed the restoration work

“I think supporting local businesses is something that’s been on everyone’s minds since the pandemic, but I think as we’ve gotten further from 2020, it’s less top of mind,” said Mary Auker-Endres, owner of Snake + Skein in Elizabethtown. “I would love to see our community rally around our local places again and also really see the depth and breadth of businesses we have right here in Elizabethtown that you don’t have to drive to Lan-
caster or Harrisburg to see.”
With that in mind, Auker-Endres had a conversation with other female business owners in town and the Elizabethtown Women’s Shop Trail was born. From now through Saturday, Oct. 26, the shop trail will encourage people to check out the variety of small businesses located throughout Elizabethtown.
“We have all kinds of businesses - bakeries, coffee shops, retail stores, a photography studio, so much more,”

E-town Grace Church, 305 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown, will host its fifth annual Community Faith and Blue Event on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will offer an opportunity for the community to connect personally with local police departments and first responders.
The police chiefs and officers
from Elizabethtown Borough, Mount Joy Borough, Northwest Regional, and Susquehanna Regional police departments will be present. Representatives of the Rheems Fire Department will be present as well as EMTs from the Municipal Emergency Services Authority (MESA). A question-and-answer time with

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the
save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
with guidance from Susan Wheelersburg, a retired art teacher, and Cecile Madonna, who is a graphic designer, a mural artist and the owner of Lola Love Letter. Fettro, who has retired from mural painting, served as an adviser on the project.
“We started with just trying to get the paint off the wall,” Landis said of the restoration project that began in March and was completed over the summer. “We probably spent a month trying to remove it.”
Landis had a goal of restoring the original colors of the mural while also adding elements to the design, including more interactions among people.
“We wanted to show what people were doing in that day and age,” she said, explaining that the Winters Heritage House Museum uses the mural for third-grade educational walking tours. “Wayne originally painted the mural with a different purpose in mind. We had a chance to add some more insight into what life was like in Ireland and Colonial America at the time.”
Landis also included design elements such as a letter from a local family to relatives back in Ireland, urging them to come to America and join them. The letter was mentioned on the walking tour but the new design ensures that spectators who are not part of the tour can still understand what’s happening in the mural.
To complete the restoration, Landis and her team visited Chroma Acrylics in Lititz for advice. The business ended up donating almost all of the paint for the project.
As she worked on the restoration, Landis was excited to share more about the area’s history.
“One thing that’s really cool about what we’ve uncovered is when you look at the maps that are on the mural, you’ll see that there are similar names in Ireland as there are to this area,” she shared. “I think a large part of that reasoning is if you come from Donegal, Ireland, it’s not a trip many people could afford to make back in the day, and they probably left a lot of family behind, hoping they would see each other again one day. If they called this place Donegal, it was like they were saying, ‘Come here. We’re here.’ It was like a GPS, like a beacon calling them here so they could find each other again.”
Landis invites people to check out the mural as well as new educational resources and interactive activities being developed at the Winters Heritage House Museum. Grant money recently received from the Library of Congress’ Teaching with Primary Sources Eastern Region Program, coordinated by
Waynesburg University, will allow the museum to invest in more user-friendly technology to create an interactive photo experience. Grant funds will also be used to develop educational programs and workshops and improve the museum’s website to provide additional educational activities, games and resources.
“Our goal is to provide residents, visitors, teachers and students a look into the growth and development of Elizabethtown through images, newspaper articles, maps, songs, books and more held by the Library of Congress,” said museum director Teresa St. Angelo. “With this funding, we will be able to expand the educational programs currently offered, and by combining the Library of Congress collection with the artifacts and documents held at the Winters Heritage House Museum, our staff will develop lesson plans and educational resources that connect and compare the history of Elizabethtown with that of the United States and other countries. We will be able to provide teachers from all over with the tools to use primary sources to share their own town’s history with their students.”
The
“Donegal to Donegal” mural is the first restoration of several other updates planned on murals in Elizabethtown. The Winters Heritage House offers a “Talking Murals” virtual exhibit at www.elizabethtownhistory.org by clicking on “Education” and then “Virtual Exhibits.” Appointments for in-person tours of the murals may be arranged by calling the museum at 717-367-4672.

Auker-Endres shared. “Many businesses will have specials, and all will be excited to welcome folks. There are two giveaways for people visiting all or almost all of the businesses participating. Plus, you get the feel-good benefit of supporting local women.”
To get started, shoppers should visit any of the participating businesses to pick up a map, which shop employees will mark off to note their stop.

Travel was once a key component of the picture that working professionals created of their ideal retirements. While the COVID19 pandemic put many retirement travel plans on hold in recent years, jetting off to distant locales is once again on retirees’ radars. Eagerness to get back on the road, in the air or on the high seas could make it easy to overlook some principles of safe travel. Such an oversight could lead to complications that could make it hard to enjoy time away from home. The following tips may reduce the likelihood that seniors encounter trouble while traveling.
- Determine if any health
issues are affecting the planned destination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers an online resource that provides the latest travel health notices for a multitude of travel destinations, along with recommendations of vaccinations that travelers should have. To access the resource, visit www.cdc.gov/travel/page/ travel-vaccines.
- Speak to a physician. A pre-trip consultation with a physician can uncover any issues that might arise during a trip. Health conditions may be easily managed for domestic travelers who are not planning to visit any especially remote locations, but some issues may not necessarily be as easily navigated when traveling overseas. Physicians can also recommend vaccinations or other
measures to protect one’s health while traveling. In addition, a pre-trip doctor visit is a great time to refill prescriptions that will be needed during a vacation.
- Take financial precautions as well. Of course, not all travel-related concerns are medical. Finances also require attention prior to a trip. Inflation has caused a sharp spike in the price of various commodities since the start of 2022, so travelers should study up on the cost of food and attractions at their destination to ensure they take enough money. Baggage costs have risen significantly in recent years, so seniors traveling on a budget may want to pack less and do laundry while traveling in an effort to save money. In addition, the unpredictable nature
of travel since the onset of the pandemic has underscored the utility of travel insurance. Seniors can look into travel insurance that could reimburse them in the case of delays or cancellations.
- Privately share the trip itinerary. Prior to departing, travelers should share their itinerary with friends and family members. They should avoid sharing the itinerary on social media platforms, which can make them a target for criminals at home and at their destination. The itinerary should include where travelers are staying, the dates they will visit certain locations and the dates of activities they will be engaging in on the trip.
Seniors rediscovering the joy of traveling can take various measures to make their trips more safe.
Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but plenty of others do their part to maintain the well-being of individuals. Among these caregivers are home health aides.
Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, assist people with activities of daily life. An aide typically helps a person who may need assistance with tasks he or she cannot perform due to illness or disability. The aides may work in a person’s home, in a group home, or in another care facility.
AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location. Their duties may include assistance with personal care, such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from a bed to a chair; checking vital signs; monitoring a client; light housekeeping; meal plan-
ning and cooking; picking up prescriptions; and providing companionship. Aides typically will not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications.
Individuals can enlist the services of home health aides who work independently or are placed through agencies. Sometimes a doctor or hospital has connections to aide services and can make referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential aides to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A good aide is compassionate, patient, and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, aides must be able to adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations.
Home health aides serve an important role in the health care community by providing care and companionship to those who can no longer live independently.
Various changes are associated with aging, and these can be physical, mental, and emotional. Although each person manages these changes in his or her own way, there’s no denying that social interaction can benefit people from all walks of life as they navigate their golden years.
The Foundation for Senior Care says socializing can give seniors a sense of purpose, stimulate the mind, relieve boredom, potentially prevent feelings of depression, and give individuals something to look forward to.
The senior living center Aston Gardens says socialization provides a significant boost to the cognitive health of older adults, helping to prevent or delay conditions that can affect memory. Individuals looking to cultivate healthy social interactions may turn to clubs and other groups. If there’s a dearth of opportunities, individuals can start and promote their own social club.
When considering forming a new group, people must decide on the group’s purpose. Social clubs can meet and be organized around any number of themes or interests, such as gardening,
crocheting, reading, or other shared hobbies. Friends also may be interested in doing food and beverage sampling. In such instances, a luncheon social club makes sense.
After choosing a theme, conduct a search of groups already meeting within a 50-mile radius to see if an existing group already meets your criteria. If not, proceed full speed ahead to establish the new club.
People may turn to social media to spread the word about their group. Although traditional methods of communication may still be available, such as posting information in a community bulletin or on a message board at a local house of worship, the internet can sometimes be a speedier messenger. Facebook groups are one way to organize social clubs, as is the website Meetup.com. The latter is a large online network of offline groups that meet all over the country and the world. The website makes it a snap to organize a local group or find an existing club.

People forming new clubs are advised to start small and then build. For those new to hosting social clubs, it may be better to begin with only a few members as everyone gets into a groove. As the group becomes more established, it can be opened up to more members, although people may consider capping membership so that the group is more easily managed.
Social clubs are a great way for seniors to stay connected and active. When there isn’t one that meets a person’s interests, he or she may consider starting one.

Jackson has been organizing events at the mansion since 2001.
The Apple Fall Festival will be her last event, she said, and she hopes people will bring their families out for a day in the countryside.
“They get a beautiful view of the Susquehanna River,” she said. “People like to come, relax, listen to the band, spend time with friends. It’s just a nice way to spend an afternoon.”
Admission to the festival is free, but there is a small fee for parking. For more information on Haldeman Mansion, visit www .haldeman-mansion.org.
LOCATION:
SAT., OCT. 19 • 8 A.M.
In addition to ham, the meal will include buttered pasta, a vegetable, a roll and butter, applesauce and dessert.
Although there is no cost for the meal, reservations are required by noon on Monday, Oct. 14, by calling the church office at 717-653-5493, ext. 270. Callers should give their name along with their phone number and the number of meals they are requesting.
