“Asa nonprofit, GEARS appreciates all the great things the community does for us,” said Lee Eckert, program coordinator. “We love doing big activities for everyone as a way of saying thank you to the community for supporting us all year.” GEARS will host the 12th annual Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St.
The Fall Festival will have something for people of all ages, Eckert noted. “Our barrel train is back this year, and that’s always popular with kids,” he stated. “New this year, our senior center will be running bingo out of ag hall. We’re really looking forward to that.”
GEARS will again partner with members of Elizabethtown Area Middle School’s Student Council, who will offer a variety of free yard games. Elizabethtown College students will provide several free activities, including Halloween bookmarks, leaf crafts and sand art bracelets. Members of the Elizabethtown College wrestling team will operate a haunted barn from
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “That’s for all ages, so they’ll change the experience depending on if a little kid is going through or a high-schooler is going through,” Eckert said.
A variety of inflatables will be onsite, including a slide, a bounce house and a basketball hoop. “This year, we’re having an inflatable obstacle course as well,” Eckert remarked. Wristbands may be purchased for all-day access to the inflatables and will include the opportunity to paint a pumpkin. Additional activities will include balloon art from The Balunguy from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., pumpkin golf and hayrides.
The Elizabethtown Area High School basketball team will operate a concession stand, and Hitch Coffee and Fuego Latino will be on-site with food trucks. The Kids Center at GEARS will host a chicken barbecue at the Fall Festival, with tickets available for purchase at GEARS in advance or onsite on the day of the festival. Each meal will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, a roll, applesauce and a dessert.
The Elizabethtown Fire Department will have fire trucks on-site,
and a variety of vendors and information booths will be set up.
“We really want to thank the Elizabethtown School District and fairgrounds for use of the facility,” Eckert said, noting that Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church also provides use of its parking lot for the festival. Members 1st Federal Credit Union is the event sponsor, he said, and he expressed thanks to the Elizabethtown Police Department and fire police for their support of the festival.
“It’s really cool to be able to do an event where you can come a spend a little money if you’re able to or you can just do all the free things,” Eckert said, noting that the Fall Festival would not be possible without the groups that partner with GEARS. “It’s great when the community comes together, and everybody is on the same page to offer a fun event for the community.”
For more information on the Fall Festival, visit www.geatintogears.org. To purchase tickets for the chicken barbecue, email wendymusser@get intogears.org, call 717-367-0119 or stop by the GEARS Kids Center office, 70 S. Poplar St, Elizabethtown.

be presented in a less-scary format for younger children and anyone who might easily be frightened. A scarier version will operate from 7 to 9 p.m. each night.
Haunted Marietta is free, but donations will be accepted to support Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA). As MRA volunteer Rebecca Carroll Baltozer explained, a Marietta resident named Willis Boyles created a Halloween attraction in his backyard for many years, inviting the community to attend free of charge. “It was a really neat event,” she stated. “I went to him about collaborating on making it even bigger.” Relocating Haunted Marietta to the Union Meeting House also meant the event could take place no matter the weather.
Boyles and his family will be on-site for Haunted Marietta, and Boyles does all the design and
creativity for the haunted house, Baltozer said. New features are added regularly, including a “swamp room” this year.
This year, MRA decided to expand Haunted Marietta beyond what the event has traditionally featured.
“We’re adding food trucks and haunted ‘spooky’ vendors that will be in the field adjacent to the house,” Baltozer remarked. “They’ll have Halloween merchandise and other fun things to buy.”
Proceeds from the event will benefit MRA and the organization’s mission to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of Marietta. Among the group’s ongoing projects are restoration and upkeep of the Union Meeting House and the
Old Town Hall building on Walnut Street, which houses the Marietta Museum.
Baltozer encourages everyone to come out for Haunted Marietta, noting that the event has received positive feedback over the years. “Don’t let the fact that it’s free fool you,” she said. “I’ve heard lots of people say it’s a quality haunted house.”
For more information on Haunted Marietta, search for “Haunted Marietta Vendor Market & Haunted House” on Facebook.
Treasures To Be Found At Yard Sale
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Walk in the doors of the fall yard and vendor sale at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, and you never know what you might find.
“I like to tell people at the door, ‘Go in and find your treasure,’” said Chrisie Emswiler, event chair. “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure.”
The church will hold the sale on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items will be for sale both inside and outside the church, located at 11 E. Elizabeth St.
“We really have a little bit of everything for sale,” Emswiler noted. “We sell everything but clothing.” Items include household goods, toys, glassware, seasonal décor, linens, shoes, scarves, books and jewelry. “We have a dining room table and
chairs for sale,” Emswiler said, adding that all items are priced to sell. Tickets will be sold for two basket giveaways as well - one featuring fall and Thanksgiving items and one featuring Christmas items.
The church has been holding the yard sale annually for more than a decade, although the pandemic put a pause on the event. This will be the first time it’s been held since 2019.
The sale will also feature free coffee and doughnuts for shoppers, and the Egg Roll Lady will operate a stand outside the church from 8:30 a.m. to noon. A variety of baked goods prepared by church members will be for sale as well.
Proceeds from the sale benefit the mission and outreach ministries of the church, Emswiler said, noting that the church supports Friends of Donegal, among other organizations.
Items for the yard sale are donated by church and community members, and donations will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 14. To make a donation, contact Emswiler at 717-468-6601.
Emswiler remarked that the yard sale is just one way the church works to impact the community. “We’re a small church, but we have a big heart for others,” she said.
Program To Discuss Fulton Theatre
The Elizabethtown Historical Society, 57 S. Poplar St., will host a special program on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m.
Speaker Jeff Coon will share about the Fulton Opera House. Also known as Fulton Theatre or The Fulton, the structure has been a cultural mainstay in the city of Lancaster since 1763. Named after Lancaster County native Robert Fulton, the building was constructed on the foundation of Lancaster’s pre-Revolutionary jail.
The program is open to the public, and there will be light refreshments. For more information, call 717-361-9382 or email info@etownhistory.com.

Dinner And
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“We encourage people to come into our church, check out us, share a meal and have some fellowship,” said Gail Ruhl, describing the annual chicken potpie dinner at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, and this year, it will feature “A Night With Noah” after the dinner.
The meal will be available for sit-down service or to go from 4 to 6 p.m. or until sold out, Ruhl said. The menu will include chicken potpie, green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts and assorted beverages. There are separate prices for adults and for children. Children age 5 and under may eat for free.
Proceeds from the dinner will be used to support upcoming mission trips. Although the destination of next summer’s trip is not
finalized yet, Ruhl noted that the church has a long history of supporting projects around the world. “All proceeds will be used for mission work locally, nationally or globally,” she said.
This is the first time the church is combining the dinner with an event afterward. “We haven’t done a dual event like this before, but we’re hoping families and

Bears
BY ERIC PYLES
High School Homecoming football, the highlight of the season for most teams, proved to be just another game for Elizabethtown. The Bears continued their torrid pace to the 2022 season, doubling up Daniel Boone 26-13 on September 30th, to improve to 6-0.
The Bears used a stingy defense to help support their offense to collect the win, forcing four punts while holding the Blazers to 159 total yards. Meanwhile what had been a high-powered attack managed just 312 yards and four scores, all from the arm of Josh Rudy.
Rudy finished with just 190 yards passing but had those four scoring tosses, three of which went to Cade Capello. The senior wideout caught four balls for 122 yards with scores of 18, 55 and 41-yards. Braden Cummings added two catches for 44-yards and snagged Rudy’s final TD pass which actually put E-town up 7-6 in the opening frame. Logan Lentz led the rushing attack with 86 yards on 24 carries.

Thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Ian the Lady Bear soccer team had just one game on the docket, a 4-1 win over Manheim Central on September 29th. Keegan Miller pitched a second half shutout to collect the win with Dani Bruno and Liana Endy taking care of the
offense. Bruno scored the first and last goals with Endy taking care of the two remaining scores. Taryn Hummer and Adyson Haak provided the setup for Bruno’s goals while Lily Heistand did the same for Endy’s second score.
BOYS’ SOCCER
If the 2022 Elizabethtown boys’ soccer team had a theme song it just might be DJ Khaled’s ‘All I Do is Win.’
The Bears sport an 11-2-1 mark and carry a whopping 10-game winning streak thanks to wins over Manheim Central and Cedar Crest with head coach James Sostack emphasizing the details of the game and maintaining mental toughness as the keys to success. “Overall, the Bears continue to take it one game at a time “respecting all and fearing none,” said Sostack.
That mental toughness allowed Etown to blow by Manheim Central on September 29th, using goals from four different players to collect a 5-1 victory. Jason Stark was the lone Bear to find the net twice, striking in the 19th minute for a solo goal and using Noah Locke’s feed for another in the 70th minute. Dax Kelly was not able to score twice but he did pick up two assists in setting up Xavier Giron in the first half and Hayden Flory in the second half. Flory flipped to the setting-up side of E-town’s final goal, finding Tavan Schoenberger for the 5-1 final. Tyler Bell finished with four saves in the win.
The Bears kicked off October on
Daniel Boone, Now 6-0
the 3rd with a 5-0 romp over Cedar Crest. Bell needed just one save thanks to constant pressure from Etown. All that pressure on the back end paved the way for the five-goal explosion, led by Schoenberger.
“Tavan Schoenberger demonstrated excellent finishing power by netting a hat trick,” said Sostack.
Hayden Flory and Zach Verghese interrupted Schoenberger’s hat trick with their second half scores while Flory helped by setting up Schoenberger’s final goal.
FIELD HOCKEY
With the end of the regular season in sight, Elizabethtown’s field hockey team is on the cusp of their first postseason invite since 2017. The Bears currently sit at 9-5 and just inside the District 3-2A postseason field.
E-town’s playoff chances took two hits with losses to Donegal and Lampeter-Strasburg but they did counter with a 4-0 win over Ephrata on September 28th. Kendra Griffie fronted that victory, turning a tight
1-0 game into a blowout with three straight goals for the 4-0 final. Caitlin Steffie scored first with help from Piper Patrick before Griffie took over. Sydney Pope finished with seven saves.
Griffie continued to find the back of the cage against Donegal on the 30th but with just one score the Lady Indians were able to steal the 2-1 win. Pope posted another seven save game while Mikaela Condran picked up the assist on Griffie’s goal.
October 4th sent the Lady Bears to Lampeter-Strasburg where they were handed a 4-2 setback. Griffie and Condran both scored unassisted goals and Pope collected eight saves, but it was not enough to survive three fourth quarter scores from the Lady Pioneers.
VOLLEYBALL
The girls’ volleyball team continues to inch their way to the postseason, posting wins over Manheim Central and Lampeter-Strasburg to improve to 10-1 overall. The Lady
Bears are currently on pace to make the L-L field as well as qualify for the District 3-4A playoffs.
Elizabethtown was able to sweep Central on the 29th, using 37 Hailey Oller assists to bookend wins of 25-19 around a 25-16 game two win. Chloe Merkt added 14 digs and 10 kills while Liz Kerin posted a team high 12 kills. Paige O’Connell added three aces. E-town posted their sixth straight win on October 4th, topping Lampeter-Strasburg by a 3-1 final.
CROSS COUNTRY
The cross-country teams traveled to Quarryville for their final regular season meet and the
result was matching wins over Manheim Central and Solanco, giving the Bears a nice 4-0 day.
Jordan DiRisio led the way for the Lady Bears, taking first with a time of 21:32 but Ali Fink (3rd-22:06), Rowan Hess (4th-22:50), Lilah Drager (5th23:04) and Jillian Wivell (6th-23:23) were just off the winning pace.
The boy’s side was not quite as dominating but still managed a 2-0 day with eight runners in the top 10. Jaycen Conrad was the leader of that pack, finishing 3rd with a time of 18:46. Jack Myers crossed five seconds later in 4th place while Nick Mascia rounded out the top five with a 19:01.

individuals will stick around for Noah’s ark,” she stated.
“A Night With Noah” will feature activities in multiple locations throughout the church, all based on the story of Noah’s ark from the book of Genesis. “It’s going to start off with a short, animated video
about Noah’s ark,” said John Renninger, who is the event coordinator. “Then, we’ll go into who Noah was as a person, talk about his family and so on.” Additional stations will include the opportunity to measure the distance of the ark’s length and width, play games and hear Bible verses related to the story of Noah.
“I have somebody who is going to be Noah, and then I have someone who will be speaking as the voice of God,” Renninger noted, adding that a backdrop of Noah’s ark will also be set up, along with animal face masks as a photo station.
Proceeds from the potpie
Attendees are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal along for the event, and Renninger noted that the activities are geared for people of all ages. “Any child through grade school and middle school can do these activities and enjoy them,” he remarked. “Older kids can help some of the younger children. It’s going to be a good, wholesome family event with a lot of things to do. It’s a way to get the whole family involved.”
“A Night With Noah” will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and Renninger recommends arriving in time to start at 6 as all attendees will progress in one group through each station. “If you want to see the whole story of Noah, come at the beginning,” he said.
For more information on the potpie dinner or “A Night With Noah,” visit https://ruhlschurch.org or call the church at 717-665-3400.
