Two EAHS FFA teams will head to nationals

Later this month, Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) will send two teams to the national FFA competition for the first time in almost 15 years.

Seniors Faith Musser and Mya Ellis, along with juniors Aleigh Shenk and Cami Lewis, will represent the school as members of the ag sales team. Seniors Calista Bryant, Kylie Hottenstein and Natalie Ott, along with junior Ellia Spang, will make up the floriculture team. They will be joined at the four-day competition in Indianapolis by their advisers, Mark Anderson, who coaches the floriculture team, and Stephen Geib, who coaches the ag sales team.

To qualify for nationals, both teams placed first at the state FFA competition in June.

“I think we went in with a lot of confidence, because we were

really well prepared,” said Faith.

“We were confident we’d place in the top three, but when we won, we were surprised and excited.”

At nationals, the ag sales team will sell Kubota skid steer loaders.

“There are two different types of skid loaders and like 20 different types of attachments,” Faith explained. “We have to find the best fit for whatever customer we’re given.” Team members will compete both individually and together, and the event will include both a written exam and a sales call to fix a customer concern or problem.

The floriculture team will complete a written test, make corsages or boutonnieres, create flower arrangements, identify plant diseases and more.

“We are preparing by memorizing a lot of different things,” said Calista. “There is a lot of unknown with our competitions, but we’ve been practicing.”

Calista, whose mother

represented EAHS at nationals as part of a meat evaluation team, said FFA has provided both life skills and a potential career path.

“FFA opened a lot of doors for me,” she said. “I never thought I would get into flowers, but I’ve worked at a greenhouse for three years now, and I love it.” After graduation, she plans to attend West Virginia University to major in wildlife forensics.

Faith, who plans to attend Penn State Harrisburg to study agribusiness, agreed that FFA is about much more than farming.

“FFA really teaches an individual a lot of life skills that not only will they use to win competitions, but they’ll use throughout their entire lives,” she said. “We compete in a lot of public speaking events. We learn communication and networking skills. Even in a career where you’re not directly connected to agriculture, you’re still getting something out of

Celebrate the season by heading to the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds for the 14th annual GEARS Fall Festival. The family-friendly event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at

“The GEARS Fall Festival is an annual tradition that allows us to serve the community while bringing together groups of all ages to enjoy fall-themed activities and create memories with their friends and families,” said Karrie Norman, GEARS

When LIV-ETown hosts its annual Halloween parade and party, people can expect an evening of family fun.

“It’s called the ‘Elizabethtown Not-Too-Scary HalloweE-town Parade,’ where everyone is invited to join in the fun by entering in one of nine categories to try and win a trophy or by dressing up and attending the show,” said Tony Gibble, who is organizing the parade with Clint Gibble. “The theme is all things

Halloween but meant to be not too scary as to keep it fun for all ages.”

The parade will step off at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, leaving from Cherry Street and College Avenue and ending at Elizabethtown College, where college groups and local organizations will host festivities.

Awards will be presented for entries in the following categories: ages 1 to 5; ages 6 to 10; ages 11 to 14; age 15 and up; couples; groups and organizations; best on wheels

Activities will include pumpkin golf, pumpkin painting, a haunted barn with age-appropriate levels of scariness, hayrides, barrel train rides, a new jumbo Hungry Hungry Hippos game and more. The Elizabethtown Senior

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sincerely,

Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

haunted barn.

A variety of craft vendors will be on-site, and the festival will feature food trucks, including Philly Cheesesteak Co. on the Roll, Mocha Motion Coffee, MAD BBQ LLC and the Candy Unicornium.

While the main goal of the festival is to provide a fun family outing, it serves an additional purpose, Norman shared. “Partnerships (with community groups) allow GEARS to highlight the talents of the younger generations and promote the value of serving your community,” she explained. “They play a huge part in the success of the event in offering so many free activities and interacting with guests.”

Norman emphasized that the festival also relies on sponsors, which help GEARS hold the event year after year. The major sponsors of the event are Members 1st Federal Credit Union, RE/MAX Pinnacle Greg Grogan/Kate Storm

Team and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. Norman encourages people to come out to the festival, which promises to be an entertaining event.

“Students have been working hard to prepare activities for all to enjoy, so stop by and share in the excitement of fall,” she said. “While many of the activities are free of charge, some activities will require a small fee. These activities can be purchased individually, or a wristband may be purchased for (a set price) at the event.”

The Fall Festival will be held rain or shine. For more information, visit www.GetintoGEARS.org/ fall-festival.

Haunted Marietta to return

Haunted Marietta is back for another year, encouraging brave souls to experience some spine-tingling fun - if they dare!

This year’s event will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26, and will feature two attractions: a haunted house at the Union Meeting House, 80 N. Waterford Ave., and a haunted corn maze and other activities behind Molly’s Courtyard Café, 17 E. Market St.

From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

night, the attraction will feature thrills and chills for adults throughout the interactive attraction. On Oct. 26, people are invited to join in a costume parade starting in the square in Marietta at 5 p.m. and walking down to the Union Meeting House for the children’s hour.

At Molly’s Courtyard Café, visitors can explore a corn maze and enjoy a variety of food trucks and vendors, said Ali Marquart, a board member of Marietta Restoration Associates, which organizes the event under creative director and Marietta resident Willis

Boyles had created a Halloween attraction in his Marietta backyard for many years, inviting the

community to attend free of charge. In 2019, Marietta Restoration Associates approached Boyles about collaborating on the event and moving it to the Union Meeting House, where it could take place no matter the weather. Boyles still handles all of the design and creativity for the haunted house, with new features added each year.

Marquart invites people of all ages to come to Haunted Marietta, noting that a small admission fee will be charged for each attraction. Donations will be accepted as well.

“People can expect a scary night ahead of them when entering either of the Haunted Marietta attractions,” Marquart said. “For those who are not a fan of getting scared, they can enjoy the vendors and food trucks for a family fun evening.”

Proceeds from the event benefit Marietta Restoration Associates, an organization founded in 1965 by a group of Marietta citizens that wanted to preserve the history of the town. “Since then, the organization has grown to be a staple in the community by organizing events such as Haunted Marietta and the Candlelight Tour,” Marquart said. “The money from these events goes towards continuing to preserve Marietta’s cultural and architectural heritage.” Both cash and credit cards will be accepted for Haunted Marietta, but cash is preferred. For more information, search for “Haunted Marietta PA” on Facebook.

Hope’s Haven to host community hoedown

Hope’s Haven Rescue & Youth Camp, 114 Kissel Barrick Road, Bainbridge, will hold a community hoedown on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. The event is free to the community.

Hope’s Haven is a faithbased ministry, where rescued horses are paired with children dealing with

conflicts or trauma in their lives. The hoedown will include horse rides, hayrides, food for purchase and pumpkin painting. It is also an opportunity to meet volunteer staff members and learn more about the program. Any cancellation information will be posted at www.facebook .com/hopes haven4Life. In the event of cancellation, the event will not be rescheduled. For additional details, visit the aforementioned Facebook page or www.hopeshaven 4life.org.

Among the attractions at the event will be hayrides.

Celebrating the music of Ephrata Cloister

The community is invited to experience the unique and original music of Ephrata Cloister in a special concert by the Ephrata Cloister Chorus on Monday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. The free performance is open to the public and will be held at Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown.

The Ephrata Cloister Chorus will perform four pieces from the 1739 hymnal “Zionitischer Weyrauchs-Hügel,” one of the earliest

collections of hymns composed by the religious community at Ephrata Cloister. In addition to these rare works, the program will feature selections from other early American musical traditions, including pieces from the Lititz Moravian community and the Shaker community of Mt. Lebanon, offering a diverse exploration of sacred music.

Preceding the performance, archivist Rachel Grove Rohrbaugh will discuss the recent conservation work completed in 2023 on two rare

Ephrata music manuscript books.

These handcrafted books, created at Ephrata Cloister in the mid-18th century, are housed in the Hess Archives and Special Collections at Elizabethtown College and feature examples of Pennsylvania German fraktur artwork.

The Ephrata Cloister Chorus is an educational program of the Ephrata Cloister Associates. The group is directed by Mark Herr and accompanied by Juliet Mitton.

your experience through FFA.”

As president of the FFA club, Kylie said she’s honed a variety of skills. “I’ve learned delegation, which is still hard to be honest,” she said. “I’ve also gotten lifelong friends through FFA, and it’s definitely a family that I cherish.” After graduation, Kylie plans to participate in the Christian gap year program Miracle Mountain Ranch, work with horses and possibly pursue equine massage therapy as a career.

Natalie said she can’t imagine her high school career without FFA. “I never felt like I fit in anywhere, to be honest, but then Faith and Kylie asked me to join FFA my freshman year, and I felt something click,” she shared. “It was a community you could

be yourself in and learn so many different things.”

Her post-high-school plans include attending Delaware Valley University to study landscape architecture.

Ellia joined FFA last year, not sure what to expect from the group. “It’s been a great experience,” she said. “The community in FFA is so welcoming. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you like to do. We all come together, and we have fun together.”

Although both teams hope to do well at nationals, the members are mostly focused on being in the moment.

“Our goal was to make it to nationals, so we all want to do well,” said Kylie, “but for most of us, this will be our only chance at nationals, so we just want to enjoy the experience and take it all in.”

The bride-elect is the daughter of Todd and Katrina Harrington of Ephrata. She graduated from Ephrata High School in 2021 and is scheduled to graduate from Messiah University in 2025.

Mr. Heisey is the son of Wayne and Simone Heisey of Elizabethtown. He graduated from Elizabethtown Area High School in 2020 and Messiah University in 2024. He is employed by Rohrer Seeds in Lancaster. A July 2025 wedding is planned.

Seniors invited to SALT ministry

For seniors, options to make connections in the community can be limited. The members of Mount Joy Church of God want to change that. The church is launching a new ministry called SALT - Seniors Are Living Treasures - open to anyone age 60 or older. There is no cost to attend the program, which will meet at the church, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy, on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Church member Tracy Miller said the time is split between organized activities and unstructured free time. “We will provide cards, games, puzzles, adult coloring, conversation, etc. Even our church library will be open for anyone who wishes to check out a book,” she said. “We will also have different activities every week: bingo, ice cream social, classic movies and popcorn, crafts and more.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), loneliness and social isolation in older adults are public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States and putting them at risk of serious medical conditions. A 2020 study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine shows that nearly onefourth of adults age 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated. According to the CDC, social isolation can lead to a 50% increased risk of dementia, a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke.

To combat those statistics locally, the members of Mount Joy Church of God

hope SALT becomes a true community effort. Several leaders of local churches have joined the effort to promote the ministry.

“The senior population in Mount Joy needs a place where they can congregate, socialize, share miseries or health conditions, meet new friends and not be lonely,” said Nancy Shonk, who attends Florin Church of the Brethren.

Joining Shonk on the leadership is Renee Haney from Swatara Hill Church of the Brethren, who got involved because she understands the loneliness that seniors can struggle with. “So many seniors are lonely and don’t know how to connect with others with similar interests,” Haney shared. “I’m hoping SALT will be a place where they can make meaningful connections with others in their age group.”

The idea for the ministry came from Mount Joy Church of God’s plans to mark its 200th anniversary in 2031. The church assembled a Vision 2031 team to look at challenges and opportunities in the community. The team noticed a lack of activities for seniors in Mount Joy. “We don’t have a location here in Mount Joy where seniors can just meet, have a cup of coffee, fellowship, play cards,” Miller said. ”I felt compelled to change that.”

While Shonk wants to provide opportunities for other seniors, the ministry is personal for her. “I am a senior, and even though I have a spouse, I am looking forward to being part of the leadership and helping make seniors feel like they are an appreciated member of the community,” she stated.

GEARS will offer activities to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for residents. To register or for more information, visit www.getinto gears.org or call 717-367-0355.

Making Budgets Work will be presented by M&T Bank on Friday, Oct. 18, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. Topics will include identifying personal obstacles to budgeting; creating a structure to track

Ministry leader Debbie Cohn, also a senior citizen, is excited about bringing her peers together. “It is important to be with people who understand your challenges, while sharing new ideas, thoughts and experiences,” she said.

Mount Joy Church of God senior pastor Richard Vaughn looks forward to what the ministry can do to help the community. “Our goal is to be a key member of this community, whether it’s participating in different downtown community events like Winterfest or simply providing access to our facility bathrooms during the car show,” he remarked. “This is an opportunity for our facility to be used by the greater community. Whether a senior attends our church, another church or doesn’t attend church at all, they will be welcomed to gather here with their peers and have a good time.”

Seniors who are interested in participating in SALT do not need to register. People may park on the street and enter the church off of Main Street or access the building without climbing steps through the

Piercing Word will present its original production “Sermon on the Mount: The Musical!” at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Audiences will witness Jesus’ most famous sermon set to original music. In this word-forword presentation of Matthew 5-7, Jesus describes what life is like in the Kingdom of God. Contrasted with the legalistic society of his day, Jesus helps to explain that man sees the outward appearance while God looks at the heart.

Piercing Word performs

Scripture in dramatic and musical presentations, word-for-word from the ESV Bible. The group, a nonprofit, 501(c)(3), Christian ministry based in Lancaster, has been performing Scripture across the country since 2007.

Piercing Word challenges people to memorize the Word of God for themselves and then equips them to do so through its Warriors of the Word Bible memorization resources. To find out more information about Piercing Word, visit www .piercingword.org or call 888-244-3461.
