The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. “We are again partnering with E-town College and the E-town Middle School Student Council,” said Lee Eckert, program coordinator for GEARS. Elizabethtown College will participate with its 30th annual “Falling Into the Streets” initiative, which encourages community involvement for students. Their activities will include sand art bracelets, candy corn bowling and mini cornhole, pipe cleaner pumpkins, leaf tracing and Halloween bookmarks. Providing support for pregnancy loss BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The loss of a baby affects a family for a lifetime, and care and support are needed well beyond the immediate time of loss. People who provide that care, whether in a professional or personal capacity, can benefit from attending “A Journey of a Lifetime,” an in-person perinatal conference sponsored by Share of Lancaster. The conference will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 26 E. Chestnut St.,
Lancaster. It will present information for people in the medical field as well as therapists and others who have touched the lives of families that have lost a baby. “It’s been a while since Share had an in-person conference like this one,” said Dr. Serena Wu, who is a maternal fetal medicine physician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the executive director of Share. “To have a conference that is pulling in nationally recognized speakers on this subject matter is unique.” See Support pg 4 R100308
and Members 1st FCU. The festival allows GEARS to give back to the community, Eckert said, noting, “As a nonprofit, GEARS appreciates all the great things the community does for us. We love offering special events throughout the year for the community as a thank you. We also love giving families the opportunity to spend a day together at an affordable price.” Many of the festivities are free, including the activities offered by Elizabethtown College and the middle school students, or people may purchase a wristband that includes all of the other activities. Eckert hopes the community will turn out for the event, noting, “It’s a great way to spend a Saturday.” LIV-Etown is seeking performers for the entertainment stage. basketball hoop shoot, a soccer kick and a football toss. The Balunguy will provide balloon art from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and haunted barn tours will also run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additional activities will include pumpkin golf, pumpkin painting, a hayride and a barrel train ride. A variety of free activities will be hosted by the Elizabethtown Area Middle School Student Council, including a bean bag toss, a sack race and pin the bow on the skeleton. The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center will host bingo with prizes for kids and adults, and LIV-Etown will feature an entertainment stage of live music and more. The Elizabethtown Police Department will be on-site, as will a variety of food trucks, including Hitch Coffee, Philly Cheesesteak Co. on the Roll and Dutch Country Soft Pretzels. Elizabethtown boys’ basketball will host a concession stand, and information booths will be set up by Wheatland Federal Credit Union
Great things are happening at Cornerstone Youth Center, and you’re invited to see the action firsthand when the center hosts an open house. It will be held on Friday, Oct. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown. The open house will offer the public an opportunity to see the
new Cornerstone Café, which opened in August. “We will thank those who have contributed to and helped with the Café renovation project,” said Jim Bush, executive director. “Our students and staff will also be giving tours of the new Café and other parts of the building. It’s a way to remember our babies and spend time together. We have readings of writings submitted by Share members. We show a video presentation, and we call out every baby’s name. our students, staff and volunteers.” Coffee and desserts will be served as well. Bush noted that it took a village of people, businesses and organizations to transform the space at the center into the coffeehouse and complete other renovations at the site. Interior design was provided by Anna and Lee Gehman of Gehman & Co. Rosalyn Gehman of Conestoga Country Kitchens provided design and drafting work. The Rotary Club of Elizabethtown presented a $5,000 grant to help with the cost of furniture, and members of the club also donated time to help paint. Members of Victory Church painted the new entrance hallway, and Mitchell Forry Wallcovering hung wallpaper. Numerous Cornerstone volunteers and board members helped to complete the project, including Jesse Myers, who did electrical work; Norm Smith and John Fry, who handled carpentry; Mason Brown, who installed drywall; Michelle Bush, who painted; and Ken Wolfe, who assisted with furniture delivery. An anonymous donor provided an espresso machine. The Cornerstone Café is the result of requests from students who asked for a coffeehouse on-site. It’s just one of the recent changes at Cornerstone. In August, the center hired Jenn Gibson as the coordinator of girls’ programs and communications. “Her responsibilities will be to oversee all girls’ programming, including discipleship groups, clubs and student recruitment and retention,” Bush shared. “She will also be involved with planning and executing all Cornerstone student events and activities. She will coordinate the publication of our monthly newsletter, update our website and oversee our social media presence on various platforms.” Hiring a full-time female staff member was a high priority for Cornerstone after the passing of former executive director Laurie Shepler in June of 2022. “We recognized that although we have many great female volunteers, we needed a full-time staff person who could be a consistent voice into the lives of our girls,” Bush said. Cornerstone Youth Center is a 4,000 square foot facility that serves middle and high school students in Elizabethtown and the surrounding areas. In addition to the new Café, Cornerstone offers an indoor skate park, a basketball court, a rockclimbing wall, ping-pong and pool tables, and a music room for students to learn the keyboard, guitar and drums. “We offer homework help and tutoring, and we provide a
