The Not-Too-Scary HalloweE-Town Parade will feature a host of costumed characters.
Celebrate Halloween with a not-too-scary parade BY CATHY MOLITORIS
n Sunday, Oct. 29, the streets of Elizabethtown will be overrun with a cast of creepy characters when the NotToo-Scary HalloweE-Town Parade rolls through town. The parade will begin assembling at 4 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Community Park and will step off at 6 p.m. It will feature awards in nine categories, provided by Elizabethtown College. The categories are ages 1 to 5; ages 6 to 10; ages 11 to 14; age 15 and up; couples; groups and organizations; best on wheels (wheelchairs or scooters); motorized, vehicles and floats; and pets. “The parade steps off onto Mount Joy Street at the park heading south and turning left onto College Avenue, ending at the Elizabethtown College Hoover parking lot, where there will be a Halloween inflatable walk-through area, trick-or-treat by downtown and local businesses and a Trunk or Treat made up of trunks decorated by college groups handing out candy provided by The Candy Unicornium,” said Tony Gibble of
“If you love Halloween, love a sense of community and love seeing fun - and some spooky - costumes and floats, this should be your not-to-miss event.”
stands for, and this year’s parade will be truly fantastic,” Waters said. “We have a larger Trunk or Treat experience and nine food trucks from the community that will be offering a great variety of snacks and edibles. We again will have the costume contest with judges E-town College president Betty Rider, WITF’s Scott LaMar and ABC27’s Ali Lanyon.” There is still time to sign up to participate in the parade, said Clint Gibble of LIV-ETown. “October 27 is the cutoff for floats or vehicles. They can email livetownevents@gmail.com to sign up,” he stated. “You can sign up for the walking and pet categories anytime on that Sunday between 4 and 5 p.m. at Pavilion 2 in the Elizabethtown Community Park.” The park is located at 201 S. Mount Joy St. “Come be a part of this new tradition in our town,” Tony said. “Even if you aren’t from E-town, you are welcome to come be a part of this growing family or just attend and enjoy the show. If you love Halloween, love a sense of community and love seeing fun - and some spooky - costumes and floats, this should be your not-to-miss event.”

The goal of the Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter (EES) is to provide a place for individuals and families experiencing street-level homelessness to get out of the cold from early December through the end of March, said Natalie Dixon, development director for Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS). The shelter
could use your help to make sure it can meet the needs of its clients during this coming winter. Volunteers are sought for a variety of positions within the shelter, and a volunteer training will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. The training is mandatory for all volunteers. “Volunteers form the backbone See Shelter pg 5
Check out the Amazing Maze BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When you’re out trick-or-treating on Halloween, or if you’re looking for an alternative activity, visit the Amazing Maze at the Park Street Chapel. The free box maze will be open to kids to explore from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the chapel, located at Park and Spruce streets, Elizabethtown. Peter Ogilvie has been creating the maze for more than 10 years. He saw an example at a church
years ago, and he decided to build his own. “My kids were very active and rambunctious when they were growing up,” he said, of his nowgrown five children. “I was a youth leader at the time, and I thought, ‘Let’s make a box maze,’ and I put one up in our church, and the kids loved it.” Over the years, he’s become an expert in assembling the maze, which is created out of boxes donated by Turkey Hill Dairy. Enter Haunted Marietta, if you dare BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Things will get spooky when Marietta Restoration Associates hosts the annual Haunted Marietta event on Friday, Oct. 27, and Saturday, Oct. 28. It will feature a walkthrough haunted house from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Union Meeting House, 80 N. Waterford Ave., Marietta. The first hour, from 6 to 7 p.m., will be a non-scary experience for younger children. Lights will be on and there will be no costumed actors in the haunted house. From 7 to 9 p.m., visitors will experience a dark haunted house full of scares and spooky characters. “This is a free haunted house with a small parade beforehand,” said Meghan Fisher, who is helping to organize the event. “It’s a haunted
house that is comparable to other attractions in the area.” The Union Meeting House, which was built in 1818, has been transformed into a spooky site under the supervision of creative director Willis Boyles and his family. Boyles had created a Halloween attraction in his Marietta backyard for many years, inviting the community to attend free of charge. In 2019, Marietta Restoration Associates approached Boyles about collaborating on the event and moving it to the Union Meeting House, where it could take place no matter the weather. Boyles still handles all of the design and creativity for the haunted house, with new features added each year. New this year, the haunted house will open after a costume parade that will begin
on Market Street at 5:30 p.m. and travel to the Union Meeting House. For the first time last year, Marietta Restoration Associates expanded the event to include food trucks, which will be on-site again this year, along with some Halloween-themed vendors. EES volunteers represent over $100,000 of value that is donated to the organization and the clients we serve.” Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, she said, including churches, civic organizations, local businesses and family groups. “At the training, our staff will explain the role of the volunteer as well as go over the various shifts available,” Dixon explained. Volunteer opportunities include checking guests in to the shelter; serving dinner; providing guests with hygiene items, bedding or other needs as they settle in; and serving as an overnight volunteer as a backup for
4 FOR YOUR CAR and TRUCK NEEDS HERE the ECHOS staff member on-site. “Our morning volunteers arrive in time to help guests wake up for the day, serve them breakfast, provide them with to-go food, and ensure they all exit the shelter on time,” Dixon said. There are also opportunities for individuals or groups to provide dinner each evening for the guests, preparing the meals off-site and delivering them to the shelter, hot and ready to serve. Volunteers also may serve by cleaning the shelter twice a week during the day when guests are not present. Along with food for three meals a day as well as other basic essentials, shelter guests have access to a shelter advocate who can help connect them with community resources, search for employment and housing and help them work through
any obstacles they may be facing on their path to stability. Guests also can use on-site laundry and shower facilities as well as storage lockers for their belongings and have access to the Enrichment Center, which includes free Wi-Fi, computers, private meeting rooms, workshops, to-go food and hygiene items, employment assistance and additional services. Nothing at the shelter would be possible without the dedication of staff members and volunteers, said Briana Anderson, ECHOS executive director. “One thing I love about the Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter is the sense of community,” she stated. “We pride ourselves on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere where guests feel cared for and don’t have to
worry about the things that we all should be entitled to like a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs. Running the Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter takes a village, and that village celebrates the successes of each and every one of our guests.” For more information on volunteering or to register for the volunteer training, visit https://echoslancaster.galaxy digital.com or email Carrie Stricker at volunteer@echos lancaster.org.

“They donate about 100 boxes, all about the same size,” said Peter’s wife, Sharon Ogilvie. “He connects them all with rivets, and he’s really mastered the art of building a box maze. He makes it even more crazy every year. He’s put slides in it. He’s put towers. There have been years where he’s said, ‘I don’t know if I can do this again, because I’m so tired,’ but then he’s ready to go again.” It takes Peter about a week to construct the maze, which is located on the upper floor of the chapel. He said he doesn’t know for sure when or where inspiration for the design will strike, but he’s open to feedback from participants. “When I hear kids saying, ‘This one was easy,’ I try to make it less easy the next year,” he said. “My kids were good at making it very hard, but then, if it’s too hard, kids get stuck in it and they cry, and you don’t want that, of course.”
The maze is not scary as much as it’s adventurous, said Sharon, who noted that the room is dark and only lit by strobe and blue lights. The sound of water dripping in caves provides a spooky ambience. People who come to the maze can also enjoy free popcorn, apple cider, candy, cookies and more in the chapel. Park Street Chapel does not hold church services, but hosts open prayer every morning from 6 to 7 a.m. Peter, who is a hospice chaplain, serves as chaplain of the chapel as well. The Amazing Maze offers a way to bring people into the chapel and for the Ogilvies to give back. “We do this to reach out and bless the community,” Sharon explained. “It’s something fun for the kids, and we have kids that come back every year. It’s a fun time and a nice time to do this, when everybody is out that night in the community.”
Student musicians plan pops concert The Elizabethtown Area High School orchestra will present a pops concert on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. The event will take place in the auditorium at the high school, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown, and admission is free and open to the public. This year’s theme is “Dance Dance Revolution: World Tour,” a celebration of dance music from various times and cultures. The theme was chosen by the students, reflecting their enthusiasm for the 1998 Japanese arcade and video game “Dance Dance Revolution.” The program will showcase the talents of the 91member high school orchestra and the 25-member middle school Allegro Ensemble.
The catalyst for this year’s concert planning is an original composition by director Rich Winey, titled “Scottish Hymn and Dance.” Lancaster bagpiper Keith Espenshade will perform alongside the combined student ensemble. Selections will also include Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance No. 5,” “City of Stars” from the movie musical “La La Land,” the Latin dance-pop standard “Let’s Get Loud,” and “Kingdom Dance” from the Disney movie “Tangled.” To add to the festive atmosphere, sections of the orchestra will be dressed in costumes that align with the concert’s theme. After the concert, attendees may enjoy refreshments.
Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Bonni Greiner will speak on “10 Truths I Would Share With My Younger Self.” She created the talk after reflecting on what she would have liked to do differently in her life based on truths found in the Bible. Bonni and her husband, Nevin, farm in Manheim, where they raised their eight children. Bonni enjoys speaking to women’s groups, praying, gardening, traveling and being with friends and family.

Proceeds from the bazaar will be used to fund an elevator at the church and will also be split between outreach ministries. The church sup-
ports the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank and provides supplies for students through Tools 4 School. Eshleman noted that the bazaar always draws a good crowd, which comes searching for bargains and unique items. “It’s just a great place to look for gifts, for yourself to decorate your home for fall or Christmas or to give to someone else,” she said. “You can also get something good to take home and eat.”

kids from Donegal High School’s National Art Honor Society who are going to run games for kids,” shared Candace Abel, production manager of Girl Crush and president and founder of Second Grace. “They have planned a lot of activities.” The students will host activities, including rock painting, a ring toss, a selfie station, pumpkin bowling and barrel train rides. Creativity will be on display - and for sale - when Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church hosts its annual bazaar on Friday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 4. It will be held at the church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days. “Most of the things we sell are handcrafted,” said Mary Ann Eshleman, bazaar organizer. “There’s a core group of us, about five or six of us, who meet throughout the year. Once a month, we get together and work on craft projects, and some people do crafting at home.” The bazaar will feature crocheted items for sale, along with beaded jewelry, a variety of ornaments, gift tags and gift bags, memo pads and notebooks, Christmas wreaths and arrangements and more. Birdhouses, handcrafted by a church member and featuring old license plates as roofs, will also be sold. “We have a bunch of wooden things, including some new
items and some old favorites,” Eshleman stated. “We make wooden bears each year in three different sizes, and they are very cute and usually sell out. We have pumpkins, turkeys, penguins, owls and snowmen. There are just lots of cute things to decorate your house with.” This year, the bazaar committee will sell tickets for a giveaway of a unique chair. “It is a repurposed wood chair made from an old door,” Eshleman explained. “It would look great on a porch, in an entryway or mudroom.” A white elephant area of the bazaar will feature jigsaw puzzles, books, decorations, games and other gently used items. “Everything is priced very reasonably, and this area is also very popular,” Eshleman said. “There’s always something different there. You never know what you’re going to find.” Food is also a large part of the event, she noted. “We will have cold soup and barbecue to go,” she shared, adding that soup varieties will include beef vegetable, chick-
