Visit the Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club, and you’ll step inside another world. “It’s taking the world and putting it into miniature,” said John Monti, club vice president, describing the 1,600 feet of track in seven display areas. “You could look at the same scene six times and see something new every time.” The club will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6, at the
club building on Freemason Drive on the grounds of Masonic Village at Elizabethtown.
For 25 years, the club members have been sharing their passion for trains with the community. The display features seven gauges, ranging from standard scale to Z scale. The latter layout is so tiny, it’s housed in an open briefcase. “It’s very unusual to have seven scales under one roof,” said club treasurer Bill Fishel.
Although the club is housed on the grounds of Masonic Village, its
50 members are about equally split between residents of the retirement community and the wider region, Monti said.
The elaborate layouts fill the building, with scenes of northwest, southeast and central Pennsylvania, as well as local attractions such as the Star Barn. A working replica of a Pittsburgh incline operates in one area, while another area features holiday scenes that change throughout the year. The club members note that the layout is always evolving,
with plans for redoing a warehouse district and swapping out a cityscape with an HO-scale amusement park.
“It’s never done,” said club president Gary Latshaw. “This is 25 years of work, and it’s always changing.”
Most of the club members have been into trains since their youth, said Latshaw. The club provides members with a space to indulge in their hobby without having to set up an elaborate layout in their home, but it also serves another purpose.

“We showcase local craftspeople and handmade goods,” said Maryann Swartz, describing the Winters Heritage House Museum’s Heritage Craft Show. The show will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The show will include a variety of items from artisans and family businesses, noted Swartz, who is the museum director. Vendors will display their wares throughout four historic buildings, including the 1760 log homes that make up the museum and the brick Victorian house next door, she said. The craft show will feature handmade jewelry, stationery, artwork, clothing, doll furniture and accessories, baby gifts, turned wood items, soaps, lotions, holiday décor and more.

Admission to the craft show is by cash donation or a nonperishable food item. The admission fee will be waived after noon on Nov. 12. Cash and food donations will benefit the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, with the exception of what’s sold in the “100% room.” That room showcases items made in-house and includes quilted and crocheted crafts.
Proceeds from anything sold in the room are used to offset the cost of the museum’s educational programming.
This is the 32nd year for the craft show, Swartz said. “It’s really become a tradition,” she remarked.
“It’s part of our mission of giving back to the community.” She
explained that recognizing the community is important to the museum, because the Winters Heritage House would not exist without the community’s support. “We were initially saved by the efforts of the community,” she shared. “People donated their time and expertise to preserve the building, so we want to give back.”
The Winters Heritage House Museum offers a variety of programming throughout the year, including workshops for children and adults. Girl Scout troops and a church meet on the property, and the organization leads an annual walking tour for third-grade students and hosts an annual quilt show in the spring.

A spectacular 15-1 regular season for the girls’ volleyball team not only earned the Lady Bears a spot in the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs, but it also dropped them directly into the semifinals, courtesy of winning the Section Two title. That meant an October 20th semifinal battle with Conestoga Valley in Elizabethtown. The Lady Bears started slowly with wins of 25-19 and 25-22 but closed out strong with a 25-10 game three win, securing the 3-0 sweep.
Hailey Oller finished with 25 assists while Liz Kerin and Chloe Merkt both posted a team high 11 kills. Kerin added four blocks with
Jacqueline Raybold tacking on two aces. Paige Horst posted 22 digs. That sweep earned E-town their second consecutive L-L finals trip, opposite Hempfield on October 22nd. The Lady Black Knights handed Elizabethtown another silver medal, posting wins of 25-19, 25-9 and 25-10 with the Lady Bears earning a 25-23 game three win to avoid the sweep.
“Saturday was a huge stage for us,” said head coach Katrina Shelly. “I was super proud of the girls for putting in the effort to make it there.”
Horst tallied 35 more digs while Oller dished out 18 assists. Kerin finished with 12 kills and one ace while both Jadyn Lloyd and Bella Lutter had two blocks.
With the L-L playoffs finished the Lady Bears turned their attention to the district bracket and their opening round match with Exeter Township on October 25th. Elizabethtown was not able to run away with the match but did post comfortable wins of 2516, 25-15 and 25-18 to earn a trip to the quarterfinals. Oller (21 assists), Kerin (11 kills) and Horst (28 digs) led the way in the sweep.
TENNIS
The girl’s tennis season came to an official close on October 21st when Dasha Gencturk and Kathryn Barraclough took part in the District 3-3A playoffs. The pair found themselves
pitted against Reading’s Ashley Retana and Halley Guerrero, the top seed in the 3A draw and ended up on the wrong side of a 6-1, 6-0 final, bringing their season to a close.
FOOTBALL
The weather turning a bit colder and the leaves turning colors not only signals that autumn is here, it also means that the high school football season is inching close to completion. Week nine brought Garden Spot to town with second place in Section Three on the line. The Spartans grabbed sole possession of second courtesy of a 66-21 win, dropping the Bears to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Despite the final score E-town did have some success but 21-first quarter points for the visitors put Elizabethtown in a hole too deep and they were unable to climb out. The Bears’ success came in the second quarter where they scored all three of their touchdowns, the first on a two-yard keeper from Josh Rudy. Cade Capello added a four-yard touchdown run while Brady Breault hauled in Rudy’s lone passing score, a 19-yard completion that made it 42-21 at the break. Spot used a 24-0 second half edge to cruise to the 66-21 final.
Rudy finished with 176 yards and that one score through the air while Breault added two more catches to his TD snag for a total of 41 yards. Logan Lentz topped the rushing attack, collecting 64 of E-town’s 93 yards with Capello adding 22 yards and that second quarter score. Braden Cummings continued his stellar season with eight catches for 115 yards.
BOYS’ SOCCER
A fantastic run through the regular season feels empty if postseason success does not follow. That was the backdrop for the Elizabethtown boys’ soccer team as they looked to shake off a surprising quarterfinal exit in the L-L playoffs with a deep run in the District 3-3A bracket.
That district run kicked off on October 24th with the top ranked Bears hosting Susquehannock and posting a 6-2 victory.
“Susquehannock was an exercise in flexibility and putting the team before the individual,” said head coach James Sostack.
Sostack was referencing a line-up switch that flipped Hayden Flory from the midfield to attack while bringing Xavier Giron back to the midfield. The change paid dividends early as Juan Lopez found Flory for a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. A few minutes later Flory went solo, giving
the Bears a 2-0 cushion at the break.
Elizabethtown continued to press and the result was back-to-back goals from Tavan Schoenberger, one unassisted and one with help from Flory. Susquehannock was able to
break up Tyler Bell’s shutout bid with goals in the 57th and 63rd minute but E-town countered with goals from Max Gerhart and Kai Laszakovits for the 6-2 final. With

“I have learned so much from these guys,” said club member David Newhart. “The club has kept me busy, and it’s created a group of friends.”
At a typical open house, eight or nine trains may be running at one time. “When you see this layout running, you can’t believe it,” said Monti, who noted that visitors should look out, down and up, because trains run overhead the display as well. “We’ve even gotten down and looked at the layouts from a child’s point of view, so we know there are things they can see from their vantage point,” he shared.
Club members will be on hand at the open house to answer
questions, fix derailments and promote the club, which is always looking for new members. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month, and club applications will be available at the open house.
Admission to the open house is free, but donations will be accepted to keep the display running. Additional open houses will be held on Saturdays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17; on Sunday, Dec. 4; and on the first Saturday and Sunday of the month from January through April. Times vary, and a complete schedule may be found at www.mvetrainclub.com or by following the club on Facebook at “MV&E Model Railroad Club.”
