Dark comedy will shine in “Arsenic and Old Lace”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“Expect the unexpected,” said Jacqui Anderton, an Elizabethtown Area High School junior, describing the school’s fall play, “Arsenic and Old Lace.” “If you come to see this show, you never know what’s going to happen or what’s going to come next.”
“Arsenic and Old Lace” will be performed at the high school, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, and Saturday, Nov. 9, with an additional performance at 1 p.m. on Nov. 9.
Set in Brooklyn, “Arsenic and Old Lace” revolves around the quirky Brewster family, whose charming exterior conceals a host of darkly comedic secrets. The story centers on two sweet elderly sisters, Abby and Martha
Brewster, who have taken up a sinister hobby: poisoning lonely old men. When their nephew, Mortimer Brewster, a theater critic, uncovers their shocking secret, he is pulled into a chaotic family drama that includes his delusional brother Teddy, who

thinks he’s President Theodore Roosevelt, and his nefarious brother Jonathan, who is on the run from the law.
The show will offer audiences a mix of comedy and drama, said Jacqui, who portrays Aunt Abby.
“The show is about two aunts who are very sweet people. They
are very charming,” she shared. “But they also think murdering old men is part of their charm.”
The women hide the bodies of their victims in the cellar and do their best to keep their villainous activities from their visiting family members.
“They poison elderly men using elderberry wine,” said Brendan Fritz, a senior who plays Mortimer. “They think they are providing peace for these men, who are lonely. They think they’re doing something good.”
“Arsenic and Old Lace” is set in the 1940s. The setting provided a bit of a challenge for the students, many of whom were not familiar with the show before joining the cast. Some watched the 1944 movie of the show to get into character.
“It’s been interesting with some of the 1940s references,” said

Grant provides canoes and more for anyone interested in getting out on the water
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Dr. David Eichler loves being out on the water. He also loves sharing his knowledge of boating with students of all ages. Now the member of Glossbrenner Church in Mount Joy can do both those things more often. Thanks to Eichler’s efforts, the church was awarded a Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) R3 grant in July.
“R3” stands for recruitment,
retention and reactivation. The grant awarded the church funds to purchase seven canoes, a trailer, paddles and personal flotation devices (PFDs).
Eichler taught health, physical and outdoor education at Donegal High School for 35 years. He used canoes provided through PFBC grants and fundraising initiatives to teach and certify students in boat safety. When he retired in January of 2020, he hoped to keep instructing

the museum site will be filled with a wide variety of artisans and crafters. Items for sale will include jellies and jams, handmade soaps and candles, natural beauty care products, wood working, hand-forged iron, paper crafts, jewelry and hand-sewn items. Additionally, the Winters Heritage House Museum’s own quilt and craft groups will be selling hand-quilted and handcrafted items.
“The Elizabethtown Heritage Craft Show has become a greatly anticipated community tradition,” said museum director Teresa St. Angelo. “The historic log cabins make a unique back-
drop for people perusing the many talented vendors as they shop for that perfect gift. While we are a smaller event, the craft show committee carefully reviewed each vendor application to ensure a variety of quality items would be offered.”
In addition to the vendors, Winters Heritage House Museum will sell hot dogs plus pulled pork sandwiches and chicken rivel soup from Gene Wenger’s Meats and Fine Foods. A silent basket auction will also be available through 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
“Thanks to the generous donations of area businesses and organizations, we have
some great items to bid on, including a NAPA car care bucket, Lancaster Stormers tickets, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre (tickets) and admission to several area museums,” St. Angelo added.
Winters Heritage House Museum is located a halfblock from the town square in Elizabethtown. Two of the buildings included in the museum property date to the founding of the town. The museum is a community project run mostly by volunteers and provides Elizabethtown with educational programs, the preservation of local history and a genealogy research library.

For Evelyn Kopp, a junior who portrays Aunt Martha, the show has been a lot of fun to work on because of the plot twists.
“There are a lot of different characters and different plot lines running throughout the show, and it all blends together,” she stated. “It’s sort of like a movie told from different perspectives, and there are a lot of little plot lines.”
Over the course of three acts, audiences are intro -
duced to a variety of eccentric characters, several of whom have their own questionable behavior.
“This show is full of twists and turns around every corner,” said senior Scott Creason, who plays Jonathan. “Come and see this show, and you’re definitely going to be entertained.”

people, but he needed canoes and equipment to do so. When the school district held a public drawing for the canoes, kayaks and trailers that Eichler had used, members of Glossbrenner Church submitted ballots, but they were not chosen. “Doc,” as he’s referred to by his students, wasn’t deterred. He applied for the PFBC grant this year and took students on maiden voyages of the canoes in September.
A group of Boy Scouts from Maytown Troop 53 took to the water at Speedwell Forge Lake in Elm for the first trip. “The Scouts learned things like floating in their PFDs, how to retain body heat while in the water, the use of throw bags, safely capsizing their canoe, performing boat-over-boat rescues and
paddle strokes,” Eichler said. Scout Logan Kean commented, “I liked it when we went in the canoe and flipped it over. I think overall it was a fun day here.”
Assistant Scoutmaster Tim Ford added, “The classroom instruction was very interactive; even with the young boys it was very engaging. The on-water training was a lot of fun for the boys, and they did better than I expected!”
The second outing brought members of Glossbrenner Church out on Speedwell Forge Lake. “The goals for Glossbrenner Church members were to not intentionally capsize but to stay dry, learn some basic paddle strokes, properly don a life jacket or PFD, relax and have fun,” Eichler said of the group that
included church members Wayne and Debra Kennedy, Vaughn and Debbie Nissley, Steve and Pat Spence and Jackie Roberts and Glossbrenner Church youth member Jordan York.
“It was great to be out and about with church friends,” said Debbie. “The canoes and accessories are fantastic, and we are so blessed to have them.” Other participants emphasized the easy-to-follow instruction they received as well as the opportunity to enjoy nature, including a blue heron that followed their route.
“I haven’t canoed for over 35 years and was looking forward to the outing,” said Roberts. “I wasn’t disappointed and want to definitely participate again.”
Eichler proclaimed that
the Lord blessed his church with these canoes and related equipment through the graciousness of the R3 grant. “I’m privileged to have the ability to share my knowledge of canoe and boat safety to the Glossbrenner Church family and to the Maytown Boy Scouts,” he said.
He’s also hoping people from other areas of Lancaster County will want to use the equipment and take advantage of Eichler’s instruction. “Glossbrenner Church extends the canoeing opportunity to others in the local communities,” he said. “If your group, church, business, Scout troop, school, etc., has interest in 2025 and beyond, contact Doc at Glossbrenner Church at 717-653-5683 and leave a message.”
High school orchestra sets pops concert
The Elizabethtown Area School District will present a pops concert on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. The event will take place in the auditorium at the high school, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Admission is free.
For this year’s pops concert, the students chose the theme “Blast From the Past.” Celebrating classic pieces that defined their genre or generation, the performance will feature the 85-member high school orchestra and the 24-member Middle School Allegro Ensemble. The selections will include Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” Handel’s “La Rejouissance,” an arrangement of “Cinema Paradiso” by renowned Italian film com-
poser Ennio Morricone, and “Satchmo!” - a collection of standards associated with jazz legend Louis Armstrong. Various students will be featured soloists.
This year’s concert will feature a new addition to the orchestra program. Through a grant from the Elizabethtown Area School District Music Club booster group, the district has purchased four electric string instruments. The four- and five-string violins, viola, and cello will be featured in Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and a “Led Zeppelin Reunion” medley. Several orchestra members will also be featured on electric guitar and electric bass.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, sections of
the orchestra will dress in costumes that align with the concert’s theme. After
the concert, attendees may stay for refreshments.

Magic & Wonder Dinner Theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, has announced several upcoming events.
A free dinner and show tickets will be offered for veterans. This promotion is valid for any “Holly Jolly Jukebox” performance that will run through Saturday, Nov. 30. The attendee must present a valid badge verifying his or her service. The offer is valid for the service members only and does not include family members.
The dinner will be a traditional holiday meal with oven-roasted turkey, honey-glazed ham, creamy mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, macaroni and cheese, green beans, corn, a salad bar, made-from-scratch soups, dinner rolls, pumpkin pie, cheesecake and other seasonal desserts. For more information about the performances, including show dates and times, or to book tickets, visit www.magicandwonder show.com or call the box office at 717-323-3077.
The “Holly Jolly Jukebox” show takes audiences on a nostalgic journey through Christmas music, featuring some of the most beloved holiday hits with a new twist. The 2024 version of “Holly Jolly Jukebox” includes new segments like “Home for the Holidays” and a fresh take on the classic “White Christmas.” Audiences will enjoy classic holiday tunes that have been given a fresh update, along with performances that blend music, magic and dance. Additionally, the theater will present its holiday magic show, “Winter Wonderland,” on select dates through Nov. 30. The show depicts a magical journey that brings the wonder of the season to life with snow, lights and performances that embody the joy of Christmas. The show has become a holiday tradition for many families, blending visual effects, illusions and holiday music.

The Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD) received a donation of $500 from the Elizabethtown Lions Club in support of the district’s Facility Dog Program. The donation was presented at the Rheems Car Show, where all four of the district’s facility dogs were in attendance. The event was held in September.
Paul Lesoine and Dan Connelly, members of the Elizabethtown Lions Club, presented the check to EASD facility dog handlers Nancy Grundhoffer, Kyle Symonds, Amy Robinson, and Beth Straw. The handlers work closely with the facility dogs, which help to support the emotional and social well-being of students throughout the district.
The Facility Dog Program has been a key initiative for EASD, providing comfort, companionship, and support to students. The donation from the Elizabethtown Lions Club will help fund the ongoing care and training of the dogs.
The Elizabethtown Lions Club has a longstanding history of supporting the school district, and the recent donation reflected the club’s commitment to fostering a positive and supportive environment within the school community.
