Emergency Shelter Seeks Volunteers BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When the Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter opens on Monday, Dec. 5, it will provide housing and meals for people who are experiencing homelessness. It will operate through Friday, March 31, 2023, relying on the help of 70 volunteers each week. As the shelter gets ready to open for the season, volunteers are needed, and there are volunteer options for everyone.

The “Swindle Sisters,” (from left) Savanna, Alexus and Ginetta Gingrich, invite people to “Radio Daze.”

Homeschool Students Will Present “Radio Daze” BY CATHY MOLITORIS

t’s “a bit of nostalgia mixed with patriotism, wrapped up in a hilarious storyline.” That’s how director Ginger Wayde describes “Radio Daze.” The play will be performed by students in the Elizabethtown Homeschool Drama Program, part of the Life Enrichment Center (LEC) homeschool co-op in Mount Joy. The show will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, and at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. Set in the 1940s during World War II, “Radio Daze” focuses on a melodramatic soap opera at a radio station. Americans are doing all they can to support the war effort, including keeping an eye out for spies, one of whom might be lurking at the radio station. The show is full of comedy, romance, rumors and misunderstandings, and it’s fun for the whole family, Wayde said. The cast members range in age from seventh- to 12th-graders, which presented a unique challenge since

Matt Espenshade’s family has been farming for seven generations. Now the Bainbridge man has been elected to lead the Pennsylvania State Grange. “It’s a tremendous honor that the membership would select me and give me this ability to serve,” said Espenshade, whose position became effective on Oct. 15. connect with other moms and find support and encouragement on their homeschooling journeys.” The drama program is just one of many classes available to secondary students in the co-op. Wayde has been directing shows for LEC for 10 years, and she credits both her production team and the students with helping to put on quality performances that are always free, a goal Wayde wants to maintain. “It is a fun night of family-friendly entertainment, not only in content, but also in price,” she said of “Radio Daze.” “There will be fun comedy, a professionally choreographed fight scene, excellent costuming and wonderful music. … No cost does not mean low quality.” The program relies on donations from the community to put on shows and also sells concessions and cast shout-outs at performances. “Coming to the show will be time well spent,” Wayde said. “You will not regret it.” For more information on LEC, visit https://lecmtjoy.wixsite.com/coop /homeschooling-in-pa.

most of them were not familiar with the play’s time period, Wayde noted. “Early on in the process, one of my seniors found a skit on YouTube of a Foley artist - the people who did the sound effects - who totally flubbed up her job,” Wayde stated. “It was hilarious, and we all passed it around and got into the groove of what a radio program could look and sound like.” The group, which includes more than 30 LEC students in the cast and crew, also discussed what it was like to be a young adult female at home while soldiers were overseas. “The girls felt that the actresses in the play talked about men too much, but I shared with them the very real concern about not being able to find a spouse to settle down with and raise a family,” Wayde commented. “It’s a concept none of us have had to face.” LEC is a homeschool group made up of more than 50 families. “LEC is a wonderful homeschooling community,” Wayde said. “Not only does it give kids a chance to gather with others in a group learning environment, it also gives moms a much-needed opportunity to

“There are volunteer opportunities through the shelter for people who would like to work directly with clients as well as for those who would prefer to help while the clients are not present,” said Natalie Dixon, development director for ECHOS, which operates the shelter. Client-facing opportunities include evening, overnight and morning shifts, with responsibilities ranging from greeting and checking guests in to serving meals. Other ways to volunteer include dropping off a hot dinner each evening, cleaning the shelter during the day and assisting with laundry services. “Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and have many reasons for why they are interested in volunteering in the Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter. In the same vein, our guests also come from a variety of backgrounds and have just as many reasons for why they need to utilize the shelter,”

The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manheim Farm Show exhibition hall, 502 Adele Ave., Manheim. It will feature a variety of vendors and food options. “It’s a great way to kick off your holiday shopping and support local families and businesses in the community,” said Chelsey Harnly, who

is organizing the event with Stephanie Rogers. “We try really hard to make sure the vendors are diverse, so you won’t be seeing six vendors with the same things at our event.” This is the sixth year for the market, which Harnly and Rogers started to showcase local businesses like their own. “Stephanie and I both had businesses, and we were not having much luck getting into the vendor shows that were already established because the fees were too expensive or people were already grandfathered into the events,” Harnly recalled. “So, we decided to start our own vendor show with other friends who had businesses.” Shoppers at this year’s market will find Thirty-One Gifts, Amy’s Mixing Bowl baked goods, Signature HomeStyles home decor, Haste Laud Press children’s books, Bri’s Handmade Treasure crocheted items, Mimi’s Bowtique bows and headbands, Pour Colleen poured items and That’s Sew You shirts, skirts and dresses. Dixon stated. “We are looking for volunteers who are understanding and accepting of that. Our volunteers should be reliable, nonjudgmental and respectful of boundaries.” She emphasized that volunteering is not as intimidating as some people might think.

“It is a short period of time, where you are working alongside other volunteers and staff members in a friendly and rewarding environment,” she said, noting that volunteers can serve individually or as part of groups from churches, businesses or organizations.

The Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter provides a “hand up rather than a hand out,” Dixon said, by offering support, equipping people with the necessary tools to be successful and enabling them to find stability in their lives. “By doing this, we are helping to ensure that their experience of homelessness is brief and non-recurring,” she explained, adding that the shelter is open to people who have a connection to any of the following towns in the northwest region of Lancaster County: Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Rheems, Marietta, Mount Joy and Maytown. “At the end of the 2021-2022 shelter season, 54% of our guests were discharged with positive housing outcomes,” Dixon said. “This means that we have 45 fewer community members experiencing streetlevel homelessness in our county.” She said shelter staff anticipate a busy upcoming

year for the shelter, noting, “It is likely with the current economic and housing climate that this may be the first year that capacity is reached.” The shelter does not receive full funding from any government grants or foundation awards, so it relies on community and organization donations for support. Along with financial contributions, the shelter has a wish list of items that can be donated. All volunteers are required to attend a training on Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. If a volunteer is not able to attend the in-person training, a virtual training will also be available. For more information on volunteering, email volunteer@echoslancaster.org. Walkers Raise Funds For Dyslexia Center

Community members gathered for the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster’s first fundraiser walk in two years.

Our Coats for Kids Program supplies over 1,600 children from preschool ages to 16 years old with brand new coats, scarves, hats and gloves. Our Mission is to keep kids warm throughout the cold months.

The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its first walk in two years at a new location, the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, on Sept. 24. The new location featured paths leading through the Memorial Grove and gardens. Approximately 20 people participated in the walk, with two children from the center raising close to $2,000. The event raised about $5,000 for the center, which relies on local fundraising to provide free tutoring for children with a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. In addition to free tutoring, the center offers free training for adults who hold a bachelor’s degree, using multi-

sensory structured teaching based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. There is a materials fee. The center is currently seeking individuals who are interested in taking part in the 2023-24 training year. Applications are due by Thursday, Dec. 15. The training will result in a Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc. certified dyslexia practitioner-1 designation. Graduate credit is also available. Upon completion, 180 Act 48 hours will be awarded to teachers for a fee. Training involves 60 lecture hours spread over the course of the year and 100 supervised practicum hours. The tutoring practicum takes place twice weekly after school hours. Training will begin in March 2023 and conclude in May 2024.

The center, which opened in 2002, has assisted more than 200 children with reading and writing and has trained 60 tutors as certified dyslexia practitioners. The center serves close to 50 children annually and can accommodate about 30 children per term. Fundraising efforts by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, the board of governors, and the parent group help offset costs associated with operating the program. Tutoring costs close to $6,000 per child each year, and children are often waitlisted for one to two years before there is an opening. The center hopes to expand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children in need of help. For more information, readers may contact the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster at 717-481-5680 or lancaster@cdcinc.org.

baby clothing and more. DLT Farms will provide sausage sandwiches, hamburgers, macaroni and cheese and soups. The Clay House Bed and Breakfast will serve lattes and chai. When Harnly and Rogers created the holiday market, they wanted to include a giveback component, so each year’s event has benefited a local nonprofit or cause. This year, North Star Initiative will have a stand set up for donations, and a portion of the proceeds from the food stand and coffee bar will benefit the organization. North Star provides support and services for survivors of sex trafficking. “Sexual abuse recovery is something

that is very close to my heart personally, and I love the mission of North Star and how they provide a safe place for these women and also provide education, counseling and other resources these women need to get back on their feet,” Harnly said. Vendors are highlighted on the market’s Facebook page at 2022 Holiday Market on Adele and on Instagram @holidaymarketonadele. Because of construction at Manheim Central High School, parking is limited, but some will be available around the exhibition hall and across the street at the community pool. Craft Show To Offer Something For Everyone BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When you go shopping at the Manheim Holiday Craft Show, not only will you have the opportunity to pick up one-of-a-kind items, but you will also be supporting a great cause. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Mission Outreach Team of Ruhl’s United Methodist Church. The craft show will be held at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“ We have more than 30 vendors, and it’s a wide variety of handcrafted items, along with direct-sales vendors,” said Michelle Eakman, who is co-chairing the event with Gail Ruhl. “We have vendors selling wreaths, scarves, pillows, jewelry, home décor and more.” Direct-sales representatives will include Tupperware, Mary Kay, Young Living, Norwex and Tastefully Simple. Along with vendors, the show will feature lots of food, said Ruhl. “My husband and I

make chicken corn noodle soup,” she stated. “We’ll also have hot dogs, baked goods and drinks. You can grab something to enjoy while you’re shopping, you can eat here or you can take it to go.” The soup will also be available to go by the quart. This is the first time the show is returning since the beginning of the pandemic, Eakman noted. “We had done this for five years, but 2019 was our last one,” she said. “We’re excited to do it again.” Vendor entry fees and all

proceeds from food sales will support the church’s mission team. Ruhl explained that a group from the church takes a mission trip somewhere in the United States annually. Although this year’s destination is not finalized yet, the group will be going in June of 2023. Eakman encouraged everyone to check out the craft show, adding, “Come out and start your holiday shopping. There is plenty of free parking, and the room is easily accessible for everyone.” For more information, search for “Manheim Holiday Craft Show” on Facebook.

Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary advises local residents to keep an eye out for copperheads during the last warm days of the year. Residents are reminded to exercise caution when walking in leaf-covered areas, as copperheads blend in with their surroundings extremely well. Copperheads are responsible for thousands of venomous snake bites in the United States every year, although they will never approach if people keep a safe distance. Copperheads are about to disappear into hibernation, so they will use the remaining sunny afternoons to bask before temperatures drop in the coming weeks. For more information regarding copperheads, search for “ Venom in a Bottle” at www.youtube .com. To learn more about Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, visit www.forgotten friend.org.

As president of the State Grange, Espenshade will be responsible for continuing to increase the organization’s visibility within the agricultural and rural communities served, he said. “One of the Grange’s founding principles is to serve as the voice for rural America,” he explained. “There are many challenges facing our farmers and neighbors. We need to work together to find common ground and the solutions to sustain and strengthen our communities.” In addition to his roles with both his local Grange and the state organization, Espenshade has been an advocate for dairy issues. He is a past winner of the Pennsylvania Granger of the Year and served the Grange at the local, state and national levels. He also has testified on behalf of the State Grange on agricultural policies, including

speaking at hearings conducted by the Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board. Outside of the Grange, Espenshade is a member of the Wyoming-Lackawanna County Farm Bureau, Mount Joy Farmers Cooperative, American Guernsey Association, Abraham C. Treichler Lodge 682 and Mount Calvary Church. Founded in 1873, the Pennsylvania State Grange was created to serve as an advocate for farmers, businesses and citizens in rural Pennsylvania. As the new president, Espenshade becomes the first person from Lancaster County to hold the position since the 1950s, when the role was filled by J. Collins McSparran. Espenshade said he takes his new job seriously, noting, “There are more than 200 local and county subordinate Granges across the state. They play a pivotal role in the rural structure of Pennsylvania. I want to be sure the Grange continues to be the voice for the agriculture industry.”

Project Receives Wildlife Grant The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), with the recommendation and support of the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group, applied for and was awarded a Huplits Wildlife Grant of $9,800. The grant will focus on a wildlife habitat revitalization project at MCC’s 9-acre campus in Akron. In tandem with the eradication of invasive species, the project will provide educational opportunities for local schools, community groups, and other organizations, as well as research projects for young adults that concentrate on the restoration of woodland. Currently, MCC, whose campus is strategically landscaped to promote biodiversity, offers children and community groups hands-on education that promotes healthy forests, native

plants, wildlife, solar energy, and water conservation. The grants are subsidized by the private Myrtle Huplits and Woodman Huplits Foundation of Yardley, which was founded in 1991 and most recently had more than $1.8 million in revenue. Sierra Club entities, as well as non-Sierra Club organizations in Pennsylvania that share similar goals with Sierra Club groups and/or the Sierra Club - Pennsylvania Chapter, can participate in the competition. For more information about MCC’s project, email katrinalefever@mcc.org. Complete details regarding the grants competition can be found by visiting www.sierraclub.org and searching for Huplits Wildlife Grant at the bottom of the home page.

including pork, turkey and beef barbecue, hot dogs and a variety of soup. “We’ll have chicken corn soup and vegetable soup as well as some others,” Myers said. “We usually get a good variety.” Baked goods will also be available for purchase. “This year, you can eat here again,” Myers said, noting that on-site dining was paused during the height of the pandemic. “The bazaar starts at 9 a.m., but it’s never too early for lunch.” Although the bazaar is organized by the Women in Mission at Chiques UMC, it’s a team effort involving many members of the church, Myers emphasized. Proceeds from the event will benefit local organizations, including Water Street Mission and Samaritan’s Purse, as well as international missions. Leftover items that are not sold at the bazaar are picked up by GreenDrop and donated to Purple Heart, continuing the church’s mission of giving back, Myers said. She encourages anyone to come shopping on Nov. 12, adding, “There is something for everyone, and we don’t have high prices.” For more information on the bazaar, call the church at 717-653-5175.

E-town Soccer Nipped in District Quarterfinals

BY ERIC PYLES

“Soccer can be unkind dominating play sometimes doesn’t matter,” sounds like it comes from a beginners guide to soccer, but it was actually Elizabethtown head coach James Sostack after his top seeded Bears were bounced from the District 3-3A playoffs courtesy of a 3-2 loss to Lower Dauphin on October 27th. “It’s all about finding the net when the opportunity presents itself,” continued Sostack, “As a coach it was a great honor to have such a talented team led by such a great group of senior boys - the day simply was not theirs.” Sostack backed his words with examples pointing out that both of the LD goals in the first half came from bounces that many would consider lucky. Of course, the Falcons still had to convert those opportunities and Vicente Martinez and Astin Lehman did just that, erasing E-town’s 2-0 cushion in a few short minutes. Even the game winner can be chalked up to misfortune according to Sostack with a bad clear ball ending up on the foot of LD striker Rees Schrode who happily deposited the ball into the net. Sostack was quick to give credit to Lower Dauphin. “Hats off to the LD boys for finishing what was provided,” said Sostack, “but all who watched the game would

agree that Etown had essentially defeated themselves the bad bounce combined with mental errors created an exit ramp for the #1 seed out of playoffs. A heart-breaking end to the season.” The Bears’ control early led to that 2-0 lead with Dax Kelly and Tavan Schoenberger giving and receiving. Schoenberger gets credit for the first score, in the 20th minute, thanks to help from Kelly with the pair flipping sides for the second goal nine minutes later. With the majority of the action on the opposite side of the pitch, Tyler Bell finished with zero saves. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ soccer team was not alone in seeing their season end on October 27th. The Lady Bear volleyball team dropped their District 3-4A quarterfinal match to Wilson by a 3-1 final with first year head coach Katrina Shelly saying, “I am super proud of this group of girls. I could not have asked for a better group to kick off my first year of coaching.” Elizabethtown opened the match with a thrilling 25-22 win but saw momentum shift in game two with a 25-13 Wilson victory. The Lady Bulldogs kept ‘old ‘mo’ on their side, closing out the match with 25-19 and 25-17 wins. Hailey Oller crossed over the 1000 career assist threshold during the match thanks to her 39 assists. added 15 digs, eight kills and one ace while Liz Kerin had 11 kills and one ace. Paige O’Connell matched that one ace while Paige Horst finished with 19 digs. FOOTBALL To close for comfort is the best way to describe Elizabethtown’s 35-30 win over Ephrata on October 28th. But a win is a win, and the narrow victory puts E-town at 8-2 on the season and earns the Bears their first district playoff berth since 2018. As the season finale got underway it looked like the Bears were going to run away with the contest, scoring the game’s first three touchdowns. Josh Rush and Braden Cummings were responsible for the first two as the pair followed their 44-yard score with a 27-yard strike. Cade Capello (11 carries - 83 yards) added his lone TD, a 16-yard scamper that made it 21-0. Ephrata ripped off the next three scores, spanning the second and third quarters with a 15-yard Rudy scramble breaking up the Mountaineer run and putting E-town back in front 27-22. Rudy scored what proved to be the game winner with a 29-yard fourth quarter scramble before hitting Cummings for the twopoint conversion that made it 35-22. Ephrata added one last score and two-point conversion, but Elizabethtown was able to hold on for the win.

Rudy finished the game with 73 yards rushing and those two important touchdowns and became the program’s all-time passing leader, his 304 yards in the game pushing him to 5,306 and past former head coach Andy Breault and his 5,195 yards. Cummings (eight catches 186 yards) and Brady Breault (nine catches - 118 yards) covered the receiving while Capello added a team high 83 yards rushing. If the 8-2 mark and postseason berth is not enough, Rudy and Cummings formed the top QB-WR duo in the L-L this year. Rudy topped the L-L passing charts with 2,733 yards while Cummings posted a L-L high 1,493 receiving yards and 17 TDs. CROSS COUNTRY Saturday October 29th was a big day for the cross-country teams with both the boys and girls taking part in the District 3-3A Championship at Big Spring High School. “I was very excited and happy with the performance at districts,” said head coach Ed Barlow, “It is always a big deal when you can get both boys and girls teams to the district AAA championships.” Nine of Elizabethtown’s scoring runners finished in the top 100 with Jordan DiRisio leading the way with a PIAA qualifying run of 19:18.9, placing her 12th on the girl’s side. Ali Fink (29th - 20:11.4), Lilah

Drager (63rd - 20:49.3), Rowan Hess (93rd - 21:24.5) and Jillian Wivell (116th 21:42.8) pushed the Lady Bears into 10th place in the girls’ team standings. On the boys’ side, it was a 9th place finish in the team standings with all five scorers finishing in the top 75 for the day. Nicholas Mascia, who lost one of his shoes in the opening 100 meters, according to Barlow, led the boys with a time of 16:48.8, good enough for 48th place. Jayson

Conrad was the next Bear to finish, doing so in 56th place with a time of 16:57.3. Bradley Kreider (69th 17:08.3), Jackson Kay (73rd 17:12.0) and Jack Myers (75th - 17:12.4) rounded out the scoring five. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team also wrapped up their 2022 season, bowing out of the District 3-4A playoffs with a 6-0 quarterfinal loss to Penn Manor on October 29th. See Sports pg 9

explaining that a nationwide shortage of turkey breast separate from whole turkeys prompted the committee to shift to ham. The meal will also include mashed potatoes, filling, sweet potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, applesauce, rolls and butter and dessert. Volunteers are needed to help prepare the meal on Wednesday, Nov. 23, beginning at 6 p.m. at The Gathering Place. Volunteers are also needed to help on Thanksgiving Day. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun,” Lehman noted of volunteering. “You’ll

get to meet a lot of neat people who will be helping out, and you’ll get to make a lot of friends.” Volunteers might do anything from peeling potatoes to packing food in takeout containers, cleaning up or washing dishes. Anyone interested in volunteering may contact Lehman at 717653-4189. Lehman and her husband came up with the idea for the free meal when they found themselves without family nearby to celebrate Thanksgiving one year. They realized there might be others in the community who were looking

for food and fellowship to mark the holiday, and the community meal was born. “It’s a good, homecooked meal,” Lehman remarked. “It’s for anyone who maybe doesn’t have family to celebrate with in the community, or maybe they can’t afford a Thanksgiving dinner or maybe they just want a good, homemade meal. Everyone is invited.” Reservations are required for the Thanksgiving Day dinner and may be made by calling the church office at 717-653-5493, ext. 222. The reservation deadline is Friday, Nov. 18.

“We’re going to have a nice mix of direct-sales companies and vendors who sell homemade items,” said Leslie Hawkins, describing the Holiday Home Market. “There’s going to be a lot of unique gift items and lots of opportunities for holiday shopping.” The Holiday Home Market will be held at Teen Central, 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday,

Nov. 19. Vendors will include LuLaRoe, Thirty-One Gifts, Tupperware and Mary Kay, and other items for sale will be jewelry, soaps, candles, ornaments and more. “We’ll have some people taking custom orders and the opportunity to purchase personalized items,” Hawkins commented. Good Eats Catering will be serving breakfast and lunch items, and My Sweet Bliss will sell cupcakes.

Sports from pg 8 “We were not at the same level as Penn Manor,” said head coach Mark Brown, “making too many unforced errors. Their speed and experience showed for long stretches of the game.” That speed and experience edge led to three goals from

Carly Keene as well as single scores from Anouk Landgraff, Lily Rineer and Paityn Smith. Keegan Miller finished with eight saves. “It was a good season, one in which we learned a lot. We will be ready for that level next year,” summarized Brown.

The members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy want to make sure everyone enjoys a homecooked meal on Thanksgiving. For the 18th year, the church will offer a free community Thanksgiving Day dinner on Thursday, Nov. 24. The meal will be available for curbside pickup at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy, between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. “We’ll be doing the majority of the cooking and prep at The Gathering Place, with some things made at the church,” said Janet Lehman, who helps to organize the meal. The Gathering Place offered the use of its facilities for the first time last year after demand for the meal began to outgrow the church’s capacity. Last year, more than 700 meals were served. This year’s meal will be slightly different from past offerings. “This year, we’re doing ham instead of our usual turkey,” Lehman said,

DHS Class Of 1955 Holds Reunion Safety Guidelines For Holiday Outdoor Lighting People should keep themselves, their decor and their equipment at least 10 feet away from power lines during and after installation and removal. Turn off all indoor and outdoor electrical decorations before leaving home or going to bed for the night. Brenneman reminded property owners that there is another, safer way to approach outdoor holiday decorating chores: turn them over to a professional outdoor holiday lighting expert like Christmas Decor. The service includes design, installation, maintenance, takedown and storage. For more information on Christmas Decor, contact Brenneman at 717-318-1941

The first class of Donegal High School (DHS), which graduated in 1955, recently celebrated its 65th reunion. Those in attendance were (front, from left) John Hershey, Dick Hallgren, Sonja Carver Bates, Mary Louise Murry Kline, (second row) John Hiestand, Helen Gorman McCurdy, Patty Hughes Yoder, Barbara Warfel Heinaman, Karleen Raffensperger Ney, Kitty Wittle Crider, (back) Ken Good, Faye Stephens Anspach, Agnes Rosenfeld Hacker, Jim Longenecker, Bob Melhorn, Gail Shelly Hawthorne, Jere Thome, Jim Brubaker, Dave Weidman, John Heisey, and Jim Smith.

In anticipation of the holiday season, outdoor holiday lighting expert Neil Brenneman of Christmas Decor of Lancaster offered do-it-yourself decor warriors some basic safety guidelines from the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). Use extension cords and electrical decorations that are designed for outdoor use and confirm that they have been approved by a recognized testing lab. Inspect lights, decor and extension cords for damage before using them, and plug them into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). Do not overload a single electrical outlet with too many devices.
