Wh en Brittany’s Hope hosts the eighth annual Christmas at The Star Barn Village on Saturday, Dec. 3, guests can expect a little bit more of everything.

“Everything is going to be bigger and better than ever this year,” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope. “We have some new games and crafts. We’ll have lots of outdoor music. There is going to be a lot of family fun.”

VIP admission to the event will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and general admission will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.

“This is a fundraiser for Brittany’s Hope, but it’s also about bringing the Christmas spirit to everyone,” Myers stated. “It’s a great family tradition.”

Festivities will include outdoor

reindeer games, a dance party, letters to Santa, interaction with characters from The Enchanted Teapot, cookies and hot chocolate, pony rides, face painting and a visit from Santa. VIP admission also includes breakfast and a family portrait.

Myers noted that visitors to Christmas at The Star Barn Village can also just stroll the grounds f or a self-guided tour, enjoying the scenery. “It’s a beautifully decorated property,” she shared. “It’s like walking into a Christmas wonderland.”

The event is made possible through the support of Stone Gables Estate and Food for Thought Catering, as well as presenting sponsors Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster and Abel & Son Roofing & Siding.

Proceeds will benefit Brittany’s Hope, which provides support for orphaned and at-risk children through international special needs adoption grants and humanitarian

initiatives. “Life-changing things are happening with Brittany’s Hope,” Myers commented. “There are so many wonderful stories we hear every day of how the lives of these kids are changing. One hundred percent of everything we raise goes directly to the kids. We have no administrative costs thanks to our corporate sponsors.”

Anyone who comes to Christmas at The Star Barn Village is helping to make a difference, Myers said, while also enjoying a fun day out. “If you’re busy and overwhelmed with the materialism of Christmas, you walk in here and you just feel joy,” she stated. “It’s a great way to start a new family tradition if you haven’t been here before. It’s a heartwarming day, and it kicks off the holidays, so those happy feelings don’t stop all through the Christmas season.”

On Thanksgiving morning, the streets of Elizabethtown will be overrun with people chasing turkeys. The Great Turkey Chase will be held on Thursday, Nov. 24, beginning at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St. Registration will open at 6:45 a.m., and

the race will start at 8:15 a.m.

As race director Grace Wells explained, participants won’t really be chasing turkeys during the 5K run/walk. “We will have stuffed turkeys located throughout the course, and when people find one, they can bring it to the end of the race and we’ll have frozen turkeys for them,” she shared.

The mission of Blessings of Hope is to end world hunger, and the nonprofit organization just took a step closer to that goal. The purchase of a 52,000-square-foot facility in Elizabethtown, the former home of Darrenkamp’s Market, will allow Blessings of Hope to expand its reach and impact more lives in its goal of becoming a “bridge of opportunity” to move people out of poverty.

GARDNER MOTORS CLOSING

To all our Elizabethtown and surrounding area residents who have been valued customers. It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing the closing of our business effective 12/30/22.

I came to Elizabethtown in 2000 and have served this community for 22 wonderful years. Due to recent health concerns, I have decided to move on and start enjoying daily life while my health still allows.

I have developed friendships with many of my customers that will last a lifetime.

I tried desperately to find another service garage to take over the operation but was not successful. The premises will not stand empty, as another company has bought the property.

The entire staff at Gardner Motors says “thank you” for your business over the years.

The wedding of Summer Mateer and Donald Brooks II took place on Oct. 22 at Sunset Golf Club in Middletown. Kevin Berry officiated at the 3 p.m. ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Lori Conant of Middletown. She attended Elizabethtown Area High School.

The groom is the son of Donald Brooks of Middletown and the late Sharon Brooks. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1995.

The bride wore a black and purple quinceañera ruffle ball gown with a corset bodice adorned with silver accents in the front. She carried a bouquet that she had assembled using black, grey and purple roses. The bride was given in marriage by her son Hunter Mateer.

The maid of honor was

Brianna Claar of Elizabethtown, adopted daughter of the bride. The best man was Ryan Lefever of York.

Providing music for the ceremony was DJ Todd Charles. The reception was held at Sunset Golf Club.

The couple resides in Middletown.

Turkey Chase

The event was formerly called the Great Turkey Hunt, but Wells noted that the name was changed this year for clarity. “The feedback we received made it sound like it was a hunting event, and we wanted to be clear that it’s a race event,” she said.

Prizes will be awarded in various age groups, including age 14 and under and ages 15 to 19, and then in 10-year groups up to age 80-plus. “We have gotten 80-plus-year-olds who participated in the past, and I want to be sure we recognize them for coming out,” Wells said.

New this year, the event will feature a kids’ run, beginning at 9:15 a.m. The kids’ course will feature an approximately 1-mile run, with the possibility of shorter distances as well, depending on the turnout. “I’ve always loved kids’ runs, and last year, we were working with ECHOS to set up the race, and they suggested adding one, so I decided to go for it this year,” Wells said. The kids’ run will be sponsored by The Tatted Toy Guys in Elizabethtown.

Although the event is not being coordinated with ECHOS

this year, proceeds from the race will still benefit the organization, Wells remarked. ECHOS provides family and individual supportive services, information and resources, eviction prevention and diversion, emergency shelter programs, job readiness and workforce development and more.

Last year, 169 runners participated in the race, and Wells noted that she hopes to reach 200 participants in this year’s event.

“It’s a very friendly course, very manageable,” she said. “It’s a fun family event that even the youngest ones can do. If they can’t do the 5K, they can participate in the kids’ run, or we also have a lot of parents who push their kids in strollers. It’s a nice thing to do with your family before you go home and eat your Thanksgiving meal.”

For more information on the Great Turkey Chase or to register, visit https://run signup.com and search for “Great Turkey Chase 5K.” Online registration will end at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, but people may register in person at the event.

In the late 1980’s thru mid 1990’s Dan volunteered as a youth baseball and football coach for the CBAA in Columbia.

Dan worked as a forklift mechanic at the former Grinnell/ ITT in Columbia in the late 1970s thru 1987 and then at Lift Inc. in Lancaster from 1987 until his retirement in December of 2019. In retirement, Dan was a part-time driver for Buck Hill Construction.

Dan was very mechanically inclined and he enjoyed spending time in his garage working on and fixing many different things, including automobiles. He also enjoyed the many beach trips to Ocean City, New Jersey that he took with his family, including the most recent trip this past October. Dan could also be found watching some of his favorite things on TV such as the Philadelphia Phillies baseball games, NASCAR races, the TV show American Pickers, and TV programs about the Alaska Triangle. Dan also relished spending time with his grandson Chase and had a love for hot rods.

Dan was preceded in death by his brother Leon. Dan is survived by his wife, Sally, of 48 years, two sons, Justin from Columbia, and Josh, husband of Gretchen Geibe from Red Lion, and one grandson, Chase and sister Rodena Blank from Gap. The family would like to thank everyone who has reached out with their thoughts, prayers, and words of encouragement.

The craft fair is designed to support local artisans and crafters while raising funds for special programs at Kraybill. Funds raised will be used to provide supplies for Kraybill’s new greenhouse and to offset the cost of the school’s eighth-grade trip.

For more information about the event, search for “Christmas at Kraybill Craft Fair and Celebration” on Facebook.

Bears End Season in District 3A Opener

One and Done most often refers to the NBA rule about players needing one year out of high school before becoming eligible for the draft but it does have other meanings. One of those meanings would be when a team’s postseason adventure lasts all of one game as was the case for the Elizabethtown football team.

The Bears rolled through their 2022 regular season slate with a spiffy 8-2 mark, earning them a District 3-5A first round playoff game at home, their first since 2018. That home game brought old Section Two foe, Cocalico, to

town with the Eagles using a power rushing attack to secure a 42-2 victory, ending E-town’s season at 8-3.

Cocalico’s racked up 327 rushing yards while E-town ended up in the negative by 20 yards, thanks to a handful of Eagle sacks. That left Cade Cappello and his three yards on six carries as team leader.

The Bears, as they have been all season, were more successful through the air with Josh Rudy tallying 157 yards on 15 of 22 passing but no touchdowns and one interception. Braden Cummings finished his stellar year with a four catch, 70-yard game, putting him at 65 catches for

1,563 yards and 17 touchdowns, all tops in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Add in Cummings’ previous work and he finishes his E-town career with 101 catches for 2,279 yards and 25 TDs. Rudy also managed to top the L-L chart, although he did his work in the passing category, finishing with 2,890 yards for the season and 5,463 for his career. That career mark is top in Elizabethtown history and the 19th best career tally in L-L history.

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross-country season is officially in the books. Jordan DiRisio tied the finishing bow Saturday November 5th by

taking part in the PIAA-3A Championship race at the Parkview course in Hershey.

DiRisio, who was named to the first team all Section Two team along with teammates Lilah Drager and Ali Fink, covered the state course, which head coach Ed Barlow described as “very difficult” in 20:44.7. That was the second-best time of all the L-L runners in the 3A race and good enough to push the senior into 56th place in the

233 person 3A field.

“Jordan did very well in the warm weather on Saturday,” said Barlow, “When you look at the total of runners in the state you must realize how difficult it is to even

qualify for the race. I was happy with her race as well as she was. This was a really good close to her season and she is looking forward to continuing her success during the track season.”

State Police To Offer Law Enforcement Training Program

Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. As CEO David Lapp explained, the new location will fill a need for the organization of getting the most from the food donations it receives. “We’d been wanting to get into food processing for a while and into dehydration,” he stated. “This will allow us to use bigger amounts of fresh produce and reduce waste.” Dehydration will also make it easier for Blessings of Hope to ship food, both locally and internationally. The organization will also begin dehydrating food on a smaller scale at its East Petersburg location on Enterprise Court later this year.

Founded in 2006, Blessings of Hope started in a three-car garage in Ephrata.

Aaron Fisher, the organization’s executive director, noticed large corporations were willing to donate semitruckloads of food, but most food banks could not handle that amount of donations. After planning and strategizing for four years, while also distributing small volumes of food, the organization moved into a 1,500-squarefoot warehouse, committing to packing seven banana boxes of food weekly to send to a local pastor for distribution. In 2011, the organization filled its first semitruckload of food and shipped it to a Native American reservation in Minnesota. As the organization grew over the years, it purchased a 44,000-square-foot warehouse in Leola and started

its first satellite location in Kentucky.

“Our mission is to take food that large corporations are getting rid of and make it available to food pantries, outreach groups, nonprofits and others who need it, sharing the love of Jesus while giving out food,” Lapp stated. The organization delivers within a 200-mile radius of central Pennsylvania, as well as to organizations in Kentucky and Tennessee and some overseas locations. “We provided food to help with the war effort in Ukraine,” Lapp remarked. “We’ve shipped to Jordan, Iraq and Haiti.” With the addition of food dehydration capabilities, the organization hopes to expand its reach even farther, he noted.

Blessings of Hope receives food from more than 200 sources and serves approximately 70,000 meals a day. The organization has more

than 700 partner ministries that receive food, with almost half of its operating revenue generated by these partners.

To serve its partner ministries, Blessings of Hope operates Ministry Selection Centers where items can be selected for each nonprofit ministry. The Elizabethtown location will be the second Ministry Selection Center in Pennsylvania, joining the

current location in Lancaster city.

Blessings of Hope staff members are in the process of settling the sale of the Elizabethtown location, and then the organization plans to complete several months of renovations before a tentative summer or early fall of 2023 opening.

Blessings of Hope will expand its services with a new location in Elizabethtown. Partner ministries help distribute food through Blessings of Hope.

enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”

Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “ We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”

This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.

He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above

ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.

The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”

Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter -acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

Lancaster Science Factory Named Semifinalist

The Lancaster Science Factory was selected from more than 2,000 national applicants as one of 64 quarterfinalists for the 2022 Yass Prize. All 64 finalists will receive a $100,000 award and move into the next phase to compete for awards up to $1 million before the end of the year.

The quarterfinalists were recently announced at the Forbes Under 30 Summit in Detroit. The awardees, located in 33 states and the District of Columbia, represent eight different kinds of education providers.

The award highlights education providers that strive to offer education that is sustainable, transformational, outstanding and permissionless (STOP). In conjunction with the $1 million Yass Prize, which will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Forbes

on Fifth, the STOP Awards Initiative will distribute over $10 million to honor the remaining education innovators, providers and entrepreneurs through the course of the competition.

The next phase will determine the 32 semifinalists, which have the ability to

receive a $200,000 STOP Award and will take part in a four-week hybrid accelerator program. The applicants will be paired with an array of technology leaders, change agents and investors to identify ways to take their ideas to the next level. This philanthropy model is intended to reward

innovators in the education space and amplify their work through numerous experiences and an extensive mentorship network.

At the end of the accelerator process, organizers will name the seven finalists, from which the grand prize winner will be chosen. The remaining six

finalists will each receive a $250,000 STOP Award.

The Yass Prize for Sustainable, Transformational, Outstanding and Permissionless Education is powered by the Center for Education Reform in partnership with Forbes. For more information, visit www.YassPrize.org.

The Lancaster Science Factory is a nonprofit science center located at 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. Its mission is to inspire curiosity, creativity and confidence by fostering an inclusive environment for hands-on STEM exploration.

The center seeks to make the facility and educational programs accessible to all. To learn more, visit www.Lancaster ScienceFactory.org.

Blood Donor Eligibility Criteria Updated

The American Red Cross invites those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, or France and have never tried to give blood due to concerns over variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), related to mad cow disease, to give blood. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated its blood donor eligibility guidance on vCJD, eliminating the deferral for those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, and France between 1980 and 2001.

In alignment with FDA changes, the Red Cross began accepting donations from individuals who have not tried giving blood before due to the prior donation criteria. In combination with prior eligibility updates in 2020 for those who spent time in other European countries, this new change effectively eliminates the deferral related to vCJD for all donors.

More people, especially those with type O blood, are urged to donate. Book a time to give by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting www.redcrossblood.org, or by calling 800-733-2767.
