“The Crimson House Murder” will spoof detective shows

Plan to see the Elizabethtown Homeschool Drama Program’s fall play and be ready for an entertaining murder mystery.

“If you love the mystery shows of the past, you’ll truly enjoy this show,” said director Ginger Wayde. “It’s a smash-up of Columbo, Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie and more. All the fun, stereotypical characters from detective shows of the past are in ‘The Crimson House Murder.’”

“The Crimson House Murder” will be performed at 7 p.m. on

Friday, Nov. 22, and at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy.

“If you love the mystery shows of the past, you’ll truly enjoy this show.”

The play takes place at Crimson House, a rundown hotel where guests are charged exorbitant rates for less-than-stellar

service. When a body is found in the sitting room and a beautiful secretary turns up dead, Hercules Porridge, a bumbling detective known as “Junior,” must unravel the mystery. The suspect list is full of oddballs: a reclusive mystery novelist, a quirky young man dressed like a jungle explorer and a peculiar actress who’s always in black. Then there’s Colonel Chutney, the eccentric neighbor who insists he’s in 1880s India, and Jeeves, the absent-minded butler. Packed with laughs, this murder mystery farce pokes fun at the classic private eye tales of the past.

Crafting success: IU13 bazaar will showcase student talents

For the past few weeks, a group of budding entrepreneurs at Marticville Middle School has been putting its creativity and teamwork to the test. Students in Elizabeth Ortega’s autism support classroom have embraced the role of small business owners, preparing for their debut at the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13’s Holiday Student

Bazaar. Operating under the name The Spectrum Studio, these young creators have crafted a collection of one-of-a-kind handmade keychains and vibrant tie-dyed T-shirts, all ready for sale at the event on Thursday, Dec. 5. The bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the IU13 Conference and Training Center, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster.

Several of the seven students in the class are nonverbal, but

to free gently used household items, books and toys; and lunch for purchase.

“We are planning a scavenger hunt to have kids see various rooms used by the children through teens,” shared Peggy Shaffer, one of the event organizers, adding that children may also take home a balloon creation from a balloon artist who will be on-site from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Secret Santa area will invite children to purchase small gifts for their loved ones at a nominal cost.

“Additionally, the children will be able to create a craft or two to take home with them,” said event orga-

nizer Sandy Brubaker, who explained that crafts can be made while parents browse the free items. “The children will be able to hear the organ playing and get a chance to use and ring the bells as well.” Opportunities to play the bells will take place at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and the organ demonstrations will be held at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. A photo booth will also be set up for kids to pose while wearing Nativity costumes.

Food, including a chicken barbecue, will be available for purchase. “The chicken barbecue is only chicken and is for takeout. No advance orders are necessary,” said Shaffer. “We are offering chili, grilled cheese sandwiches, fruit and whoopie pies for eating on-site.” Free coffee will be served, and a variety of baked goods, including cookies, pies and candies, will be for sale as well.

The church has hosted community events similar to this in previous years but none with this specific focus, said event organizer Karen Ungemach. “We have held holiday events in the past, but this year we wanted to focus on children’s activities,” she said. “We felt adding gently used household

items and clothing for all ages would help with sharing what we have with others who would benefit from what we had once needed.”

Holiday gifts will also be available for purchase, including fair-trade items from the nonprofit SERRV and the farmers’ cooperative Equal Exchange.

Proceeds from the event will benefit a community organization, but details are still being finalized, organizers said. “Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care is one organization. We are open to other local organizations that help the community, and it will depend on the amount of the proceeds we generate,” Shaffer explained. The church members are looking forward to seeing people of all ages at the Holiday Celebration. “We encourage the community to come to a fun event with activities for the children as the adults get to enjoy coffee and see them playing in a safe environment,” Brubaker remarked. “We want to share our wealth of gently used items with those who would be the new owner.”

Young trapshooters target success

When someone tries trapshooting, they will experience much more than just hitting a clay target, said Tod Neifert, president of Manheim Clay Sports and member of the Manheim Sportsmen’s Association.

“Young shooters that take up trapshooting sports learn great skills,” he shared. “On top of shooters learning safety, sportsmanship and shooting skills, they also learn to work through difficult times, concentration during distractions and that there is value learning from the veteran shooters.”

One of the things Tod enjoys most about the sport is its inclusivity. “Trapshooting is for all shooters, not just males, not just females, not just young or old, and there are shooters that stand and shooters that are in a wheelchair. It is for all,” he said. “Because of the support of the Manheim Sportsmen’s Association, the joy of trapshooting is within reach of all young shooters in the Manheim area.”

As Tod explained, five young local trapshooters got together to try the sport for fun at a different trap club. “They all began to improve and enjoy the competition and camaraderie of trapshooting,” he said. “With all the boys being from Manheim, Jim Shreiner and Matt Powronzik, with the support of Kurt Diffenderfer, began reaching out and offering the boys to shoot at Manheim Sportsmen’s Association.”

The students, who all attend Manheim Central High School, have achieved great success and improvement in their disciplines this year, Tod noted. He explained that there are three disciplines in amateur trapshooting. “The disciplines are singles, handicap and doubles,” he said. “Singles trapshooting is when you shoot

The production will feature students in grades seven through 12. The Elizabethtown Homeschool Drama Program is part of the Life Enrichment Center (LEC) homeschool co-op in Mount Joy.

“LEC is a wonderful homeschooling community,” Ginger shared. “Not only does it give kids a chance to gather with others in a group learning environment, it also gives moms a much-needed opportunity to connect with other moms to find support and encouragement on their homeschooling journeys. It’s a great place to forge lifetime

friendships for kids and moms.” She added that this performance will feature six seniors: Celene Gingrich, Nikolas Grab, Austin Kreider, Jonathan McNally, Josh Mummau and Molly Wayde.

Ginger noted that attending the show will be an interactive experience for audiences as people try to figure out the mystery before it’s revealed on stage. “We have a lot of fun ways for the audience to participate this year, ranging from guessing who the murderer is to owning their own show T-shirt to winning special (giveaway) items

related to the show,” she explained. “It’s an affordable family-friendly night out at the theater, with no tickets necessary. Our faithful fans look forward to the drama club’s performances every year. Not only do co-op families attend, but local community members come and make sure to mark the date on their calendars. We love our audience and look forward to performing some quality entertainment for you.”

Preparing to present the play has provided a fun but challenging opportunity for the cast members, Ginger said.

one act nervous as their particular character? What would they do or say? How would they respond to being accused? It gives the students a great opportunity to delve into the personality of their particular character.”

Ginger hopes community members will come out for the show to enjoy the comedy on stage and witness the hard work of the students.

“The challenge in this type of farce is the pacing,” she remarked. “There’s always action on the stage. Also, characters need to master staying in character, especially during the reveal scene, when the detective works out who the guilty party really is. How would

“We provide free performances because we know how expensive it is to take your family to the theater,” she said. “My desire is always to provide family-friendly, affordable theater to the community. We do sell concessions and cast shout-outs where you can honor cast members with treats and messages. We gratefully accept donations, too.”

In Memoriam

I am heartbroken to announce the death of my mother, Erin Kyle Musick. She unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at the young age of 61. Born in Shelby, N.C. on March 23, 1963. Erin was the daughter of the late Walter and Irene (McComas) Musick. She was preceded in death by both of her brothers, Todd Musick and Dane Musick. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Michael Paris of Bainbridge, where they lived together for the last 35 years. She leaves behind her children: Ronald Patterson III, husband of Kristen, of Elizabethtown; Zachary Patterson, husband of Mariana, of Manassas, VA; Adele Patterson of Bainbridge; Joshua McMaster of Ramstein Air Base, Germany. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren: Kyla Patterson, Brielle Patterson, Uli Vonder Born, Inga Vonder Born, Oslo Patterson, and her newest grandchild, Eve Patterson. Her nieces, nephews, and other family members will miss her dearly as well. If you were blessed enough to have known Erin, you know her faith in Christ was the source of her strength. She was not just a member, but a Pillar within the congregation at Heritage Miracle Life Church for about 25 years. As a member of the worship team, she could be heard belting out the loudest notes for the Lord during Praise or playing a soothing melody on her flute. Erin’s involvement within the church did not stop there, as she was an active member of the Women’s Ministry and Prayer Team. Not content with simply attending church, she became a Licensed Minister so she could teach the Word of Christ and was only a few classes away from becoming fully ordained. She was a true warrior for God, a soldier for her Faith, and did her best to live her life for Christ. Erin dedicated her life to her family, often sacrificing her own wants and desires so her family would endure. However, she eventually did pursue a profession which she had great passion for and in 2005, Erin graduated from the Baltimore School of Massage. Over the years she worked at various massage businesses, the most recent being the Firefly Hollow Wellness and Rocky Acre Farm Bed & Breakfast. In the two decades since she graduated, she also built an extensive in-home massage business. She valued and cherished the relationships she was able to forge with each and every client. An intellectually curious woman, Erin yearned to learn more. She took pride in her extensive knowledge of holistic techniques, remedies, and medicines. To meet the varying needs of her clientele, she became skilled in a wide array of massage techniques, including Swedish, Hot Stone, Myofascial, and Bowen Therapy.

When my mom wasn’t involved with a church activity or giving a massage, “Shades” could be found driving bus for the Conoy Summer Playground. She will be forever missed by the Bainbridge children she used to drive to and from the multitude of Summer Playground activities. Her other hobbies included knitting (she was a wizard with a needle!); tending to her garden of mints and herbs; reading the Bible and being immersed in the Word of God; being a proud cheerleader for her kids; cooking fabulous family meals; making her famous Thanksgiving and Christmas pies, especially her Apple-Cherry and Pumpkin Pies; as well as baking countless delicious cookies for the holidays. Her most treasured pastime, however, was spending time with her grandkids, being called “Mamaw”, and sharing as many experiences as possible with her loved ones.

My Mom was tireless in her efforts to ensure that each connection she made was deeply personal, that every relationship was meaningful, and treating everyone she met like family. She leaves behind a life-long legacy of selfless caring, gracious service, and soulful compassion that will never be forgotten. Though she was called away too soon, we can rejoice that she is without pain and is dancing in her heavenly glory. We will all miss her dearly.

they use pictures and communication devices to share their enthusiasm for their projects. Pointing to the beaded keychains, Zayvion Jones showed off his favorites, while Nesha Hopstetter said she loves making keychains from silicone beads and shrinky dinks.

As they string the beads and color the keychains, they are doing much more than just making crafts.

“There are so many good skills they learn from this,” Ortega said. “They learn to handle the money, work on the budgeting and prepare all the items.”

Participating in the bazaar is the perfect fit for student Cole Hartman, who was hard at work making a SpongeBob SquarePants design. He’s been practicing his favorite school subject in preparation for helping to run the business. “I like to do math,” he said. “It’s fun.”

Ortega’s students will be among hundreds throughout Lancaster County who will offer their homemade items for sale at the bazaar.

“We have well over 300 participants and approximately 40 mini businesses,” said Doreen Unton, coordinator of job training services for the IU13, who noted that a similar event is held in November in Lebanon County. “We set up the Conference and Training Center using the perimeter of the room and three rectangle groups so that customers can walk around easily to see merchandise. … It is usually loud and busy but happy!”

The bazaar began after the IU13 established a grant program to support teachers in setting up classroom mini businesses, she said.

“The primary goal of a mini business is to teach students job skills, social awareness and work ethics in a practical, class-based setting,” Unton explained. “By managing a classroom business, teachers can provide direct instruction on work responsibilities, specific job skills, production processes, quality standards and employability skills.

… Running a mini business offers students valuable insights into business operations and entrepreneurship. Each experience, including facing low sales, becomes a learning opportunity.”

Unton noted that the bazaar is a win-win for both shoppers and students. “As a customer, from the moment you walk into the building on the day of the bazaar, there is an energy and buzz of excitement,” she shared. “Students are smiling and telling you all about the craft they made, and shoppers are happy to browse for treasures. The events have also become a reunion of sort for past students and staff. People are hugging, laughing and engaging with the students. It’s a wonderful atmosphere, and I guarantee that visitors will leave the event with a smile, full heart and lots of goodies!”

For the students and staff, the event represents the culmination of their hard work. “Now they get

to set up their display of crafts and sell them to customers,” Unton said. “They get to practice social skills, sales skills, math and so much more. And they get to do a little shopping at the other vendors.”

Sales from the mini businesses directly benefit the classroom, with funds used for student incentives, donations to charitable causes or even unique initiatives such as a class sponsorship of an Alaskan Iditarod dog race team.

Proceeds from The Spectrum Studio will be used to fund community-based outings and field trips.

“I’d like them to go to a restaurant, practice ordering their own food and paying for their own food,” Ortega shared. “We want to go bowling or go to the movies. We want to give them opportunities to

practice those kinds of skills.”

Unton encourages people to visit the bazaar to pick up one-of-akind items and see the students in action. “Ask them what they made and how they made it,” she said. “If you purchase something, allow them to test their math skills and customer service skills. Oftentimes students blossom in this environment when they are outside the classroom and can interact with people. … By attending, you will help reinforce and demonstrate public support for our local area students and make the event impactful and memorable for them and their teachers.”

For more information on the bazaar, visit www.iu13.org and go to “All Events” under the “Events, Workshops & Classes” tab.

Each of the Manheim shooters has events that he gravitates to, Tod noted. Shooters Chase Kirchner, Avery Kirchner, Andrew Waddington and Joel Hershey represented Manheim Central FFA at the Lancaster County FFA competition earlier this year and won first place.

Leonidas Neifert has achieved the ranking of All-American. “In the 2024 season, Leonidas is ranked 18th in the world in amateur trapshooting in the Sub-Junior Category,” Tod stated. “He also achieved the honor of being named to the Pennsylvania state team.” In the 2024 season, Leonidas amassed more than 40 awards in each of the three disciplines.

“The group’s success would not be possible if they wouldn’t have found a sportsman’s club to accept them with open arms. The Manheim Sportsmen’s Association did exactly that,” Tod commented.

He added that the association emphasizes safety first, and he noted that club members serve as mentors for the young shooters.

Tod is optimistic about the future of trapshooting in Manheim. “It is refreshing to see families accompanying their young shooters to the club,” he said. “It is exciting to see the veteran trapshooting members of Manheim Sportsmen’s Association mentoring the young shooters. It is a symbiotic relationship where the young shooters learn from skilled veteran shooters that have already experienced the problems and difficulties that young shooters will see. The veteran shooters have a deep sense of pride as they mentor and pass on their skills to the next generation of shooters.”

Tod noted that with the support of the Manheim Sportsmen’s Association, a youth trapshooting program is forming now.

“Trapshooting is a safe, fun sport that will challenge every person. As Manheim Clay Sports is a new organization, we are actively looking for community support,” Tod said, noting that anyone interested in supporting the organization or learning more may email him at Neifertt2@gmail.com. “It is our hope to have the official program up and running by spring.”
