SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Finding hope during the holidays or some people, the holidays are anything but happy. People who are grieving may find the hustle and bustle of the season is especially hard to handle. Jeri Culbertson wants to help. The owner of Naturally Gifted by Jeri in Elizabethtown will hold a series of grief support groups in December. “Speak Your Peace: A Sanctuary of Solace for the Grieving Soul” will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17, with the possible addition of Dec. 24 if there is enough interest. The sessions will be offered free of charge at 1 Market St., Suite 103. A freewill offering will be accepted to cover the cost of refreshments and supplies. “I want people to know they are not alone during the holidays,” Culbertson said. “I struggle this time of year. I lost my parents and a lot of my family in October and November. It can be very hard when you see everybody with their families, happy, cheerful, and you’re not. There are not a lot of places where you can feel safe to share how you’re feeling.” The sessions will include breathing exercises and meditations, providing help and support for participants. “Each week, we’ll find a different tool in the toolbox to get through the holidays,” Culbertson said. An ordained Presbyterian deacon, she often holds workshops and groups on a variety of topics, and she has attended grief support programs in the past. “I really feel like in the last couple of years, there is a need for something like this,” she said. “Many people lost someone through COVID, or they are just looking for connection during this time of year.” There is no registration required for the sessions; participants can

The market will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, both inside the Marietta Community House, 264 W. “There are handcrafted items from local artisans, sweet treats and light lunch.” More than 18 vendors will be featured, selling a variety of items such as Nissley wines, fudge, cakes, cheese, pottery, wooden toys, candles and organic herbal products. it means to be a teen today,” said Moore. As a former school social worker, Moore is especially familiar with the issues facing students. “(Teenagers) have had their entire world shifted over and over,” Moore commented. “They haven’t had the sense of stability that most of us had.” Mental health issues among teens were rising prior to the advent of COVID-19 restrictions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 10-year Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that in 2019, nearly 40% of high school students reported periods of feeling persistently sad or hopeless. More than 18% seriously considered suicide. Moore pointed out that the rise of cyberbullying coupled with the pandemic has complicated the situation. “Complex trauma is what we’re looking at,” she said. “ Ways that complex trauma can present can look like puberty or trying to gain independence … (but) something that is true for most teens is that they benefit from support in figuring out their own mental health.” Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County

(MHALC), noted that communication is key, but not always easy. “Teens are struggling with feeling connected and heard,” she said. Moore agreed, saying, “These kids need safe spaces to process all that’s happened,” she noted. “Teens need to be accepted by their parents and to be capable of discussing mental health with their parents.” Ambur Gregorio, clinical social worker/therapist with Integrate Therapy, pointed out that parents may struggle to understand their child’s situation. “(Teenagers) are dealing with so much that their parents didn’t have to deal with, (and parents) don’t know how to help their kids walk through this,” she said, noting that after working many years in adult corrections, one of her goals is to help break cycles of trauma and abuse that may exist in families. According to McDevitt, help is available when parents and school staff members respond to student needs. “Lancaster is very fortunate to have a wealth of resources, but we need to ensure that kids feel safe sharing with the adults in their lives,” she said. “They need to know not only that they will be heard, but also that we will take action to provide them with tangible support.” Moore echoed McDevitt’s thoughts, saying, “As a therapist working with teens, I am primarily interested in giving them that space where they feel believed and trusted and respected.” She praised area schools for their efforts in this area. “Schools are doing an incredible job of integrating mental health awareness into the school system,” she said. McDevitt noted that breaking the stigma surrounding mental health is a necessity. “Parents and other adults engaging with youth need to become comfortable with uncomfortable conversations and situations when it comes to their children’s mental health,” she said. scan this code for more local news townlively.com

Bechtold is joined in her Christmas meal effort by Sis Luzader, who has been helping with the meals for 35 years. Any senior is eligible to receive a meal and food bag, no matter their income or circumstances. “This is not charity,” Bechtold said. “This is not just for low-income people. This is strictly for people who will be alone on the holiday. Christmas is a special day, and seniors should not be alone. Even though they can’t stay and eat there, they can come in and visit with us when they pick up their meal.” She emphasized that anyone who would like a meal should sign up for one. “I want to make sure no one is ashamed to call,” she said. Asked what keeps her going with the project year after year, Bechtold said she has a heart

Sometimes, when she’s out running errands, Helen Bechtold feels like a celebrity. “It could be July and it’s about 105 degrees outside, and people will see me on the street and they’ll say, ‘Hey! You’re the Christmas lady!’” she said with a smile. For the 36th year, Bechtold is organizing a free Christmas Day dinner for anyone age 55 or older. The meal will be available for pickup only at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 25. “We’re going to have ham, turkey, filling, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, a roll and butter and a dessert,” Bechtold said. “I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to have turkey,

because our volunteers are getting older and it’s a job to cook and prepare the turkeys, but we found enough help to do it.” Along with the meal, each senior will receive a bag of food, much of which Bechtold purchases herself. “If I see something I think a senior will like in their bag, I’ll pick it up for them,” she said. “I like to give them things they don’t normally go out and buy.” Although she loves giving back, she noted that she’s looking for community support of donations of gift cards, candy or other items for the bags. “After the pandemic, we thought things would get easier, but it’s really gotten harder for people,” Bechtold said, noting that last year she served more than 100 meals. “We’re asking the community for more help than ever because the cost of living keeps going up.”

REYS offers students love, support and fun BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When kids are looking for a place to go after school, Rainbow ’s End Youth Services (REYS), 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, welcomes them with open arms. “REYS is a wonderful place for students to have fun, to learn about God’s love and to build relationships with other students and loving mentors,” said executive director Cristina Paden. REYS, which typically coordinates the start of a new year with the start of the school year, had a delayed opening this year due to some shifts in staffing, but the programs are now back on a limited basis. “We’re open three days a week,” Paden stated. On Mondays, students in grades six through 12 are invited to REYS from 3 to 6 p.m. On Wednesdays, programs are open for students in grades four through six, and on Fridays, students in grades one through three are invited to attend. Both of those pro-

grams are offered from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Activities vary depending on the age of the students, but all sessions share similar elements, Paden said. “They always have free time, they always get a hot meal provided by our volunteers, and they always have Bible study or a life lesson that we share with them,” she explained. “Everything we do offers the students opportunities for connection and to get to know other people.” REYS also offers one-onone piano lessons and group martial arts classes. She emphasized that REYS hopes to soon return to programming five days a week and resume field trips and special events for the students, and the organization is in the process of hiring a full-time student ministries coordinator to support programming. Paden noted that REYS fills an important role in the community, and when it was closed, people noticed. “A lot of families kept ask-

ing us, ‘When are you guys going to open?’ Our kids kept asking, ‘When can we go back to REYS?’” she said. REYS relies on financial support from the community to offer its programs for free to families, and it requires a roster of volunteers to support students. The organization is currently in the middle of a campaign to raise $100,000 by

the end of the year, Paden noted. “We want to do everything we can to continue to make our programs possible for local families,” she remarked. “REYS is a really fun place to make friends and for students to receive extra support and love as they journey through life.” For more information on REYS, visit https://reys.org.

Proceeds from the Christmas Market will be used to maintain and improve the Marietta Community House. The building has a long and important history in Marietta. Built in 1871 by Dr. John Huston for his nephew, the home remained a private residence until 1909, when it became a sanitarium that administered rabies vaccines to children. In 1919, as World War I was ending, Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Hiestand purchased the building and donated the house to the community of Marietta, dedicating it in the memory of their son, Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who had died while serving in the military. Over the years, the building has housed an American Legion post, a public library, a well-baby clinic, a soup kitchen and the Pennsylvania School for the Arts, among other organizations. Now a nonprofit organization, it serves as a wedding and spe-

cial event venue, with a focus on a variety of community events throughout the year, including an annual Veterans Day celebration and a garden tour.
