Asthe newly elected president of Elizabethtown College, Betty Rider is focused on one word: relationships. “I have learned that an important part of being a successful leader is developing new and building upon existing relationships,” she said. Having worked in various positions at the college for more than 30 years, Rider has already created strong relationships with the faculty, staff and students.
Rider was named transitional president of the college in January before being formally announced as the 16th president of the school in November. She came to Elizabethtown College as a psychology professor before transitioning into administrative roles, including registrar, provost
and senior vice president for academic affairs.
Rider said that it’s been easy to build the solid relationships she’s relying on, crediting the supportive campus community and noting that everyone at the school takes its motto - Educate for Service - to heart. “Because of this entrenched mission, we create relationships beyond our campus and make deep impacts on the greater community,” she commented. “We will work to transform and elevate our college’s greatest assets and build a strong sense of belonging for all.” She noted that she is also focused on continuing to grow enrollment, offer high-demand academic programs and promote a diverse and equitable environment.
She said one of the biggest challenges she’s facing in her new role
has been an ongoing one since 2020. “We are very much still rebounding from and dealing with the ramifications presented by the COVID-19 global pandemic,” she stated. “We are committed to helping our students, particularly those students who were in high school at that time and may need additional support and guidance.”
When she’s not at work, Rider enjoys getting out for walks with her two dogs. “I also have a son who works and lives in Seattle, and I try to visit him as much as I can get out to the West Coast,” she said.
As she settles into her role as head of the college, Rider said she’ll continue to put a premium on relationships. “Relationships create a collaborative and innovative environment to reach and exceed goals,” she remarked.

“The show tells a story of a group of friends struggling trying to create and survive life in bohemian Alphabet City (in New York City),” said Sonia Moll, who plays Mimi Marquez. “I think people can expect to see a story come to life and experience the value of love
and life through not only the story itself but by each character and member of the show.”
Sean Deffley, who portrays Mark Cohen, agreed, adding, “If you’ve never seen ‘Rent,’ you’re in for a real treat. It’s a fastpaced rock opera with some of the most iconic musical theater
songs of all time. It will have you jamming out in your seat one minute and then pulling at your heart strings the next.”
The show opens on Christmas Eve and takes audiences through a year in the lives of its characters. It makes a great Christmas show, Deffley stated. “For me, Christmas is a time of reflection on the previous year, a time to really appreciate life and be thankful for what we have,” he remarked. “That theme is ever-present in ‘Rent.’ It’s a celebration, so to speak, of all the blessings and tragedies that a single year of our lives can hold. It also speaks to the idea of loving and supporting your family, whether it be the one you were born with, or, like the characters in the show, the one you’ve chosen.”
Written by Jonathan Larson, “Rent” debuted almost 30 years ago, but the story has a timeless appeal, said Moll. “It’s relevant still today because it shows the struggles of anyone ... trying to figure out where they belong and trying to create and find a legacy to leave behind,” she commented. “We all somewhere deep down

struggle at times to find a place to fit in and to belong.”
Deffley noted that “Rent” offers audiences an important message. “‘Rent’ is all about love, inclusivity and acceptance,” he said. “It’s been more than 25 years since the show premiered, and as a society, we’re still working toward all of that. Any chance we get to tell a story as poignant as ‘Rent,’ even on a small stage like ours, is an opportunity to spread love and understanding into the world.”
“Rent” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 9 and 16; at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 10 and 17; and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 11 and 18. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit https://susquehannastage.com.

When people arrive at the church, they will be greeted by a Roman centurion, who will inquire if visitors are coming to Bethlehem for the census that was decreed by Caesar Augustus. The soldier will give visitors a booklet with the Christmas story, so people can follow along through the drive. Stations will include shepherds in the field watching their flocks and angels giving glory to God. Before guests arrive at the Nativity scene, the church will offer a complete takeout dinner featuring ham, a baked potato, green beans and a dessert. The final scene will depict the three wise men bringing gifts to the baby Jesus.
“This event has been wonderfully received in the past,” said Steph Heisey, one of the organizers. “We’ve served up to 300 or 400 people.”
Beverly Snavely, who is also helping to organize the event, noted that church members portray the characters in the various scenes, complete with costumes, and that live animals are featured as well. “It’s really something to see,” she said.
Heisey stated that not only does the Drive to Bethlehem offer a free meal, but it also provides sustenance for the soul. “It’s about getting to see the Christmas story come to life and understand the true meaning of Christmas,” she said. “It’s just a neat time for families to be together.”
Reservations are required for the ham dinner and may be made by calling 717-665-4499. The reservation deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 14. Anyone who wants to experience the

Serving Seniors Christmas Dinner
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“When I see someone in need, I help them,” said Helen Bechtold. And for more than 30 years, Bechtold has been doing just that by providing a free Christmas meal to seniors. Bechtold and Sis Luzader are known as the “Columbia Christmas Ladies.” They will once again offer the meal on Christmas Day, Sunday, Dec. 25. It will be available for pickup only at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
The meal will include turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, a roll and butter, cranberry sauce and a dessert. It is available to anyone age 55 or older, regardless of income. “It’s for anyone who might be alone on Christmas or who doesn’t have anyone to celebrate with,” Bechtold said. “Christmas is such an important holiday to seniors. I think it’s when they miss their family and friends the most. Rather than sitting at home alone, they can come out and get a meal and know someone is thinking of them.”
Bechtold began serving the meal in the 1990s, when she took over as director of the Columbia Senior Center. “I was a little upset when I realized I was asked to give up my Christmas Day to do this, but I soon found I really enjoyed it,” she said. “When I see the seniors smile, it makes me happy.”
She noted that the giveaway is a community effort, and she emphasized that help is especially needed this year. Each senior not only takes home a meal but also receives a bag of grocery items and small treats such as cookies or candy. “The cost of everything has gone up, so we really need donations,” Bechtold said.
The Columbia Lions Club supports the project, and Bechtold receives discount grocery items from Blessings of Hope, but she said she’d gladly accept donations from individuals as well. Anything that is left over from the meal is donated to the Veterans Affairs hospital and personal care homes in the area.
Bechtold said she hopes to return to in-person dining next year, and she noted
that the meal has never been canceled, even during the height of the pandemic. “We get people from all over Lancaster County and York, and we’ve even had people come from out of state,” she said.
“If a senior needs or wants a meal for Christmas, they can get one.”
Providing the meal also requires help from many volunteers, Bechtold remarked, noting that helpers include members of the Donegal High School wrestling team, who set up and assemble goodie bags on Christmas Eve. A core group of about a dozen people help with the meal, some of whom have volunteered since the beginning, Bechtold said.

Public Invited To Christmas Light Show
The Christmas Spirit Light Show, a light display that residents of Lancaster and surrounding counties can enjoy from the comfort of their vehicles, opened on Nov. 25 at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster.
Visitors to the light show will journey through a 1-mile track surrounded by hundreds of thousands of colorchanging lights, animated and dancing in harmony to Christmas classics.
The show will run through Saturday, Dec. 31. It is open on Sundays through Thursdays from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Guests can enter the light
show on Prince Street through the south entrance into the stadium. The show takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to drive through, and food and beverage items along with holiday merchandise will be available for purchase at the entrance to the show.
Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the Christmas Spirit Light Show is given to a different nonprofit organization. This year, the selected charity is Power Packs Projects, an organization whose mission is to fight hunger among students across Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

minutes prior to each performance. A reception for the audience and singers is planned following each program.
This year, the chorale’s program will be enhanced with musical accompaniment by brass, organ, piano, violin, and percussion. Members of the Messiah University Brass will be featured in several selections, including a performance of John Rutter’s three-movement “Gloria.”
The chorale’s opening processional, “Personent Hodie,” will set the stage for an array of music, such as Jim Clements’ “Gabriel’s Message,” Eric
frompg 8
Whitacre’s “Lux Aurumque,” Jerry Rubino’s setting of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” and “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.” Traditional songs and carols will follow, including an audience sing-along of Mack Wilberg’s “Joy to the World.” As the lights are dimmed and candles glow, the chorale will surround the audience for the traditional finale, “Silent Night.”

Outdoor Holiday Decorating Tips Offered
The holiday season is here, but home and business owners still have time to plan and execute an outdoor lighting display. According to Neil Brenneman of Christmas Decor of Lancaster, a franchise member of the Christmas Decor network, the key to deocorating is having a plan. To create a plan that is right for local homeowners or businesses within a budget, he offered several pointers.
Start by finding a decor focal point. Identify the property’s most attractive features - a porch, the front door, some shrubs or a perfect tree - and focus attention there with garlands, greenery and lights. Then complete the look by enhancing other areas of the property. Outline windows or rooflines with lights or tuck
hints of color into the landscape to complement the focal point design.
Brenneman recommended keeping the decor simple and knowing when to stop decorating. Too many themes and colors will detract from the focal point. He noted that a clean, uncluttered display is more attractive, safer and more cost-effective.
Members of the Christmas Decor Franchise Network have been decorating homes and businesses since 1986 and now create outdoor holiday displays in more than 350 markets in 49 states and Canada each holiday season.
