SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
A Saving Grace For Young Mothers BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen Candace Abel became involved with the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program in Lancaster, she noticed something. There were plenty of programs in place to help the children she was advocating for, but it was a different story for the young mothers. “The mother of my very first CASA child appointment was developmentally disabled and only 19 years old,” Abel recalled. “She was really in need of strong and loving guidance, but she did not fit into any of the local programs for single moms. … I kept thinking what she needed was a reliable ally who could offer both advice and comfort to make the difference in her future life.” From that experience, Second Grace was born. The two-year program for single mothers below the

age of 25 will match “Graces” - the mothers - with “Sages” - trained mentors who will advocate on the mother’s behalf. The Sage might do anything from offering advice to driving the Grace to court or child care classes, helping with budgeting or assisting with finding housing. Each Grace will have her own Sage, but the Graces will move through the program in groups of four who will attend monthly Grace Gatherings. “This will give our Grace clients the opportunity to build community with someone who can understand their challenges,” Abel explained. “Additionally, they will need a better peer support system to get and stay healthy.” During the second year of Second Grace, the Graces will move into the work phase of the program. “Our vision includes long-term stability for our Grace, and an understand-
A Treasure Trove Of Books And More BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Tucked inside Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., there’s a treasure trove of treats to discover in etownbooks. The bookstore sells gently used books that have been donated to the library, along with locally made merchandise.
“We have a huge selection of children’s books,” said Janet Hench, treasurer of the Friends of Elizabethtown Public Library, who operate the store. “We have a large history area as well, with books about World War II and the Civil War, among others. We also get regular donations of beautiful coffee table books and travel books.” See Books pg 9

ing of the value of steady employment is an important piece of this stability,” Abel stated. The goal is to employ the Graces either at Girl Crush, a bath and body products company Abel started in 2017, or other local businesses. Abel founded Girl Crush after retiring from Brittany’s Hope, the special needs adoption advocacy program she created after losing her first adopted child in a car accident. She’s the mother of 17 children, 13 of whom are girls. “Every time I would adopt another daughter, people would say to me, ‘You must have a girl crush,’” she said. Although Abel was inspired by another organization, Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the idea for Second Grace is a unique one and required creation from the ground up. “The cream of the crop came forward,” she said, of Deborah Wilson Gadsden, a child welfare expert who is writing the curriculum for the Sages, and Karen Jaskot, a family and addiction therapist who has written the curriculum for the Graces. With the foundation for Second Grace set and a strong executive committee and board of directors in place, the program is ready to begin Sage mentor training. “Sages need the fortitude to go the road for two years with these women and the extraordinary, compassionate patience to stand firm and help when these women meet obstacles,” Abel said. “I am sure that when we make a good match, it will be life changing.” An information session for potential Sages is set for Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Event Barn at 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy. Fifth-graders in the Elizabethtown Area School District recently attended the district’s annual Agricultural and Environmental Science Day, where they took part in hands-on lessons on the contributions of agricultural and environmental sciences to the local community. High school students enrolled in Elizabethtown Area High School’s agricultural program hosted the Bear Creek School students at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. The fifth-graders spent the
day rotating through various stations developed by the high school students. The stations included dairy science, poultry science, equine science, Pennsylvania wildlife education, swine science, environmental science, agriculture equipment education, aquatics resources, small animal and vet science, and
plants, seeds, and soils. Members of the high school’s FFA chapter presented at each learning station, many of which included live animals. Many of the stations also included interactive activities, and each station featured a review game or activity. The purpose of the event was to introduce elementary
students to agricultural and environmental issues at the state and national levels. The learning stations addressed several state academic standards that all students are required to meet before graduation. In addition, the learning station presentations provided a public speaking experience to the high school students.

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has changed its name to Mennonite Life to welcome new communities and generations into Mennonite history and local history movements. The name change and rebrand signify a renewed commitment to clear communication and indicate that the organization is open to everyone. Those choosing the new name felt that Mennonite Life improves visual impact and will be easy to remember. The Mennonite Life campus on Millstream Road in Lancaster offers a Visitors Center, formerly called Mennonite Information Center, which introduces guests to Mennonites and hosts the Biblical Tabernacle Experience. In the Collections building, visitors can enjoy the Mennonite Life Museum or research using its archives
and library. The museum in Willow Street has gone by many names, starting with The Hans Herr House. Realizing the house was built by Christian Herr, and there was no definitive documentation on whether Christian’s father, Hans, ever lived there, the name changed more than a decade ago to the 1719 Herr House & Museum. The 1719 Museum simplifies the existing name. At the 1719 Museum, visitors can immerse themselves in 18th-century life through a guided visit to the 1719 Herr House. Visitors will also learn about the history and cultures of Native Americans by experiencing a full-sized replica of an indigenous longhouse, interpreted by a guide. To learn more, including hours of operation, visit www.mennonitelife.org.

CV Boys’ Hoops Sponsor Hoodies For Homeless The Conestoga Valley High School boys’ basketball team is planning a community service project called “Hoodies 4 Homeless.” “We are looking for new or gently used hoodies,” said head coach Jim Shipper. Community members are invited to drop off hoodies at CVHS’ Rill Gymnasium on Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on game nights: the tip-off tournament on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10 and 11, featuring Warwick, Cocalico, Bermudian Springs, and CVHS; Tuesday, Dec. 14, against Cocalico; and Friday, Dec. 17, against Elizabethtown. There is also a collection bin at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. “All sweatshirts will be hand delivered to homeless centers on Dec. 18,” Shipper said. “We wanted to find a way to give back and help those in need.” For more information, email coachshipper@msn.com. “It’s called ‘Magical Memories,’ and it’s a look back and a re-creation of all our greatest hits over the past 20 years,” said Wolfer. “Our principal skaters will do songs that were featured numbers in past shows.” Principal skaters for 2021 are Amelia Atkinson, Lily Babione, Evan Bertz, and Lauren King, along with area high school seniors Cassie Peck, Isabella Kettles, and Navya Reddy. “Magical Memories” will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 12, at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Lancaster Ice Rink, 371 Carerra Drive, Lancaster. The show will feature more than 30 skaters ranging from beginners to adults. Among the show numbers will be features from past shows including “Arabian Nights” from the “Princess Classics” show, “Hoedown Throwdown” from “Toy Story,” “Neverland” from “Finding Neverland,” “Defying Gravity” from “Oz on Ice,” “What Time is it?” from the “High School Musical” show, “Come Alive” from “Mirror Mirror,” “Circle of Life” from “Festival of Life,” and “Ugg-AWugg” from “Peter Pan.” According to Wolfer, audience members should expect
Principal members of the cast of “Magical Memories,” the Red Rose Figure Skating Club’s 2021 show
to see a presentation that will draw on skaters’ skills and acting ability. “We will have some high-flying double jumps, including double axles,” she reported. “(Skaters) showcase all kinds of spins that require extreme flexibility.” She added that fancy footwork will include twists and turns that represent the highest level of U.S. figure skating rankings. “(Skaters) work hard at emotionally bringing the characters to life,” Wolfer stated, adding that theatrical movements that require unison and
teamwork among skaters will be featured as well. The final performance will bring back costumes from featured skating solos throughout the years. Wolfer has confidence in the Red Rose coaching staff that will be helping prepare the skaters for the show. “Our coaching staff is very experienced,” she said, pointing out that many of the coaches have taken part in past shows and performed in some of the numbers that will be included this year.
Wolfer skated with Disney on Ice for several years, and she has brought her professional experience to the choreography of the show. Readers who wish to purchase tickets may email Lynne@rrfsc.org. Tickets for certain seating areas will be discounted. Children age 2 and under who sit on a caregiver’s lap will be admitted free. Because the club is associated with the United States Figure Skating Association, masks will be required for audience members.

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24
This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.
The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.
July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5

In the center of the store, tall white shelves display featured books on a specific topic that changes regularly. “ When we get a donation from someone, and it includes books about a certain subject, like maybe a lot of books about baby care, we showcase them there,” Hench explained. In addition to books, the store sells items created by local artists and craftspeople. Doll clothes that fit 18inch and 13-inch dolls, such as American Girl, Bitty Baby and WellieWishers dolls, are sold year-round, while other handcrafted items rotate on a two-month basis. Currently, potter Roxanne Dombrosky’s work is for sale. “This is the first potter I’ve brought in, and she’s from Elizabethtown,” Hench remarked. Artist Ingrid Spangler’s collage creations are also for sale in the store. “She paints, but she also puts in pages of old books into her collages,” Hench explained. “She also creates wreaths that are made from old book pages.” Other featured items might include jewelry or fabric pieces. “I try to change it up regularly, so there’s always something new to see,” Hench commented, noting that she frequents local craft shows to find vendors to highlight. A portion of the proceeds from the non-book items benefits the library, along with 100% of sales from books in the store. The bookstore began more than 20 years ago during a capital campaign. To raise money for the library, a team used some
vacant space in the area where the Elizabethtown Coffee Company is located today to set up a small store inside the library. Eventually, due in part to the success of the store, it relocated to its current, larger space opposite what is now the Coffee Company. The bookstore is open during all library operating hours, and it is fully staffed by volunteers. “We also sell gift certificates, so if you have a family member who is a reader, but you’re not sure what they like to read, that makes a great gift option,” Hench said. She emphasized that the inventory is limited to what is donated to the library, but that the Friends keep a running wish list of requests. “If somebody is looking for a specific title, they can tell us and we’ll call them if it happens to come in,” she stated. The Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library are looking for volunteers. Interested people should stop by the front desk of the library and ask for an application.

Weis Markets Receives Award became the first sponsor of the new Live Fierce Capital Region community impact campaign. This yearlong campaign helped the American Heart Association address community health priorities, including providing CPR in Schools training kits to several school districts throughout central Pennsylvania, supplying a local Federally Qualified Health Center with blood pressure selfmonitoring tools to help patients most at risk of uncontrolled high blood pressure to manage their blood pressure at home. The campaign also equipped Harrisburg School District with new filtered water bottle filling stations, which will provide students with access to clean drinking water in an effort to encourage them to hydrate with water instead of sodas and other sugary drinks.
