Welcome 2024 with a community celebration
Riding in support of veterans BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Fifteen years ago, Tyler Stumpf and his friend Jeff Andrews were sitting around “solving the world’s problems,” Stumpf recalled with a laugh, when they came up with an idea. “We said, ‘Let’s go for a ride on New Year’s Day,’” said the avid motorcycle rider. “A few other people heard about our plans, and we had 11

hen it comes to celebrating New Year’s Eve, the folks at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown like to do things a little differently. “We count down to the new year at 7 p.m., because that’s the time it’s midnight in Letterkenny, Ireland, which is the sister city of Elizabethtown,” said pastor A.J. Domines.

participants that first year.” The group decided to raise money with the ride, donating the proceeds to the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “I think we might have raised $400 that first year,” Stumpf said. “This event turned into much more than I ever could have expected.” He’s not kidding. Last year’s New Year’s Day ride featured the most participants ever - upward of 500 bikes and 600 See Riding pg 3
“We also raise a lit star on a flagpole. Our claim to fame here is, everywhere else, they drop something. We do not drop anything. We lift up the star, which is the symbol of Christmas and the Wise Men coming in a few days.” Welcome 2024 will be held in and around the church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31. “We’ll start with a chicken barbecue from Kauffman’s BBQ,” said Phil Clark, a member of the event committee. The meal will be available to eat in or to go, with tickets available for purchase in advance at the church office or at the door. It will be served from 3 to 6:45 p.m. and will feature a half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll and butter and a drink. Additional food options will be served in the church social room

and will be offered free of charge. Food will include hot dogs and three kinds of soup - tomato basil, beef vegetable and chicken and rice. Outside, free popcorn and hot chocolate will be served, along with s’mores over a firepit. At 3 p.m., juggler Chris Ivey will perform in the church sanctuary. “At 5:30, we’ll have our Music on High series with a carol sing in the sanctuary,” said music director Kevin Gane.
“People are invited to join in.” Outside, a DJ will provide musical entertainment throughout the event. Bingo will be held in the Lutheran Lodge on-site from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., and a variety of events will also take place at the Winters Heritage House Museum, located at 47 E. High St. The museum will host hearth cooking demonstrations, as well as children’s crafts and entertainment
After more than a year of planning, fundraising and construction, a permanent home for flag retirement is now established in Veterans Grove on the Masonic Village campus. It was the site of a special ceremony in October, when the location was dedicated, and hundreds of flags were retired. “Before this, we were using a cut-off oil drum that (the) maintenance (department) had given us,” said Ben Hoenich, describing the former flag retirement site. “It wasn’t bad; it burned the flags,
but now we have a 12-by-12foot pad, and in the center of it, there’s a pretty serious firepit with stainless steel inserts.” Hoenich, a Masonic Village resident and commander of the York Camp - Heroes of ’76, spearheaded the project to create the site, working with the maintenance department at Masonic Village and AB Landscape & Construction to complete it. At the dedication, members of the National Sojourners Harrisburg Chapter 76 led a ceremony called “When Duty Is Done.” They were joined by members of the York Camp See Honoring pg 2 R101812

Gane added that the church members enjoy organizing the event annually as a way to connect with Elizabethtown-area residents. “It’s a very nice, established community event,” he remarked. And it’s a melding of both secular and religious elements, noted Domines, adding, “It’s a secular celebration, but we insert our Christmas hymns and our Christmas star. We just want the community to come together and enjoy the camaraderie of being together.”

to dispose of flags that are worn out or no longer usable, he noted, adding that it shows respect to our nation’s symbol. Hoenich designed a graphic on a pedestal in Veterans Grove, explaining the process of retiring a flag. Masonic Village hosts a Massing of the Colors event around Veterans Day, when thousands of flags are displayed on the grounds. Many of those need to be retired afterward, Hoenich said, noting that he has also collected other flags throughout the year. He hopes to hold another retirement ceremony on Flag Day in June, and his goal is to host flag retirements twice a year on the campus.

Masonic Village CEO William Kingsbury gave the dedication, and a Masonic Village resident sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” “Elizabethtown High School has a new Junior ROTC Navy program, and we also had four of their cadets, along with their instructor, who showed up in their uniforms and retired some flags,” Hoenich recalled. He estimates more than 100 people attended the event despite the wet and windy weather. “I invited people - dignitaries, donors, guests - to step forward, grab a flag and place it in the fire,” he said. “They saluted the flag as it went in the fire.” This is the proper way

I’m still surprised, every year we’ve had fireworks, how long and impressive the fireworks show is.” Vicki Yaider, a member of the event committee, noted that Welcome 2024 offers an opportunity for an early evening celebration of the holiday. “It’s a great way for families with young children to celebrate without having to stay up until midnight,” she said.

people - and raised more than $32,000. So far, the group has donated more than $270,000 to veterans. This year’s ride will take place on Monday, Jan. 1, with registration beginning at 10 a.m. at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. The ride will leave from the Legion at 1 p.m., and participants will follow a 25-mile route along the Susquehanna River, ending at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St. Members of the ladies’ auxiliary will serve breakfast at the Mount Joy Legion before the ride, and a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served at the Elizabethtown Legion at the ride’s conclusion. Fun traditions at the event include Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. “Baby New Year will arrive at the Mount Joy Legion at noon,” Stumpf said, noting that this year’s honoree is Jeff Shultz. At the end of the ride, an auction will be held. “We’ll have items donated by local businesses and individuals,” Stumpf said. “This
year is going to be our biggest auction yet.” Proceeds from auction sales as well as the sale of T-shirts and patches will also benefit the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Stumpf noted that the event has become much more than just a fun afternoon bike ride. “It’s really become a community event over the past 15 years,” he said. “Businesses and organizations support us, individuals participate, and people in the community come out to see all the motorcycles pass by. That’s got to be one of my favorite parts - seeing the people out along the route.” The ride is open to anyone who is interested in participating, and people may participate with any vehicle of their choice, including cars or trucks. “All of the proceeds for this event stay in our local area,” Stumpf said. “When you’re donating, you’re helping somebody you might know.” For more information on the ride, call Stumpf at 717-468-6197 or search for “Annual Frosty Balls & Frozen Susies Poker Run To Benefit Veterans” on Facebook.

Calla Stoltzfus
Caleb Garcia
The Elizabethtown Area High School Rotary Students of the Month for November are Calla Stoltzfus and Caleb Garcia. The program celebrates student achievements and seeks to sustain a culture of learning and belonging that values academic success and raises awareness of student contributions to the high school community. The honorees have demonstrated exceptional dedication to their studies, leadership and character qualities and positive contributions to the school community. Calla is the daughter of Todd and Mandi Stoltzfus of Elizabethtown. She has regularly been named to the academic honor roll. She is president of the chorus and a participant in both concert and chamber choirs. She is also captain of the twotime Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 tennis team, vice president of Model UN, a student leader for Bible club, and a member of National Honor Society (NHS), Key Club, and book club. She also completed the Attollo Recruit program, securing a spot as an Attollo Scholar. She has participated in the theater program, including performing in “Into the Woods” and “SpongeBob the Musical.” Calla volunteers with the Manheim Project and engages in a local coed recreational soccer pro-
gram. At East Fairview Church of the Brethren in Manheim, she is a member of the youth group and the worship team, volunteers with the children’s ministry, and has participated in numerous work camps. Her commitment to the church earned her a place on the National Youth Cabinet for the Church of the Brethren. Calla intends to pursue a nursing degree after high school, with the goal of becoming a labor and delivery nurse. Caleb is the son of Crystal Garcia of Elizabethtown and Julio Garcia of Middletown. He has consistently been listed on the academic honor roll. He is co-president of the Future Business Leaders of America and captain of the soccer team, as well as a member of NHS; the chess club; the Paws and Think Club; the Student Lighthouse Team; the Jump Start Program, which welcomes freshmen to the high school; and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care honored Caleb as a Do The Right Thing winner. He has an internship with Mirelle Associates in accounting and is a member of the Lancaster Elite Soccer Club. Caleb attends LCBC Manheim Campus. He plans to pursue a business degree in finance.
Student leaders at Bainbridge Elementary School join school principal Amanda Baxter (back, left), school counselor Taylor Eisenhart (back, right), and school custodian Gary Yaremchak (back, center) in sorting food donations for Thanksgiving food boxes.
Bainbridge Elementary School held a Thanksgiving food drive from Nov. 6 to 14, aimed at supporting local families during the holiday season. The school rallied together to collect nonperishable food items, including cereal, soup, canned vegetables, macaroni and cheese, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. By the conclusion of the drive, a total of 321 items
had been collected. These items were used to create Thanksgiving meal packages for six local families in need. The food drive engaged Elizabethtown Area School District’s core benefits-based accountability principle of community connections, whereby students have an opportunity to be a meaningful part of their school communities.

Schreiber client takes first ride on new elevator
R102488
Isaiah Martin signs the inspection form after verifying that the elevator is fully functional.
The checklist consisted of essential elements such as functioning lights, operational buttons, seamless opening and closing of doors, and a smooth up-and-down motion. Isaiah’s signature on the inspection form signifies not just an approval of the elevator’s functionality but also Schreiber’s commitment to providing its clients with a safe and inclusive environment where they may grow and thrive. Isaiah’s role in the inspection process exemplifies the core values of the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Devel-
opment, where every individual’s passion and contribution are acknowledged and celebrated, regardless of challenges faced. For more information, contact Alexandra Cahill at 717-393-0425, ext. 129.

The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development’s expansion project reached a pivotal moment as 10-yearold Isaiah Martin, a Schreiber client diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta type 3, became the first client passenger on the newly installed elevator by Benchmark Construction, following its state inspection and certification. Isaiah, the center’s resident elevator enthusiast, was entrusted with the responsibility of inspecting the elevator to guarantee its flawless operation. Despite the challenges posed by his condition, Isaiah checked off every element on the inspector’s checklist provided by Benchmark Construction.

Enjoy a free dinner and live Nativity BY CATHY MOLITORIS
... God with us!” “Immanuel
“This is what Christ requires of us - to take care of people,” said Steph Heisey, referring to a free community meal that will be offered at Ruhl’s Church. “We help people who are in need when we do this.” The church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will host a live Nativity and drive-through Christmas meal on Saturday, Dec. 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu will feature ham, a baked potato, green beans and a dessert. In the past, the church has hosted a Drive to Bethlehem event, but this year, only a Nativity scene will be featured. “People can see Joseph and Mary with the Son of God in a straw-filled manger,” said Kris Gray, who is helping to organize the event. Event committee member Randi Myer will bring a miniature horse named Jellybean to the Nativity, with the possible addition of other animals. “This will be an opportunity for people to drive up and see what it was like in Bethlehem when baby Jesus was born,” she said.

Make-A-Wish is seeking to spark hope this holiday season with the debut of the Holiday Wish Line, a telephone hotline with messages recorded by wish kids designed to give callers a moment of joy as they navigate the holiday season. The messages aim to inspire togetherness and maintain the festive spirit. Through Sunday, Dec. 31, six wish kids, who have all battled a critical illness, will provide kidfriendly advice, stories, and funny moments via phone at 215-445-1302. Callers will be asked to select from a series of prompts upon calling the hotline to listen to messages from Jasper, a 5-year-old with chronic respiratory failure, who wished for a backyard playset; Brantley, a 7-year-old with a heart condition, who wanted to see snow and wished to build a snowman with his family; Annabelle, a 9-year-old with cystic fibrosis, who wished to skate with her favorite hockey team, the Las Vegas Golden Knights; Ava, an 11-year-old with a heart condition, whose wish allowed her to learn firsthand what it takes to be a content creator; Fernie, an 11-yearold with cancer, who, as an avid athlete, wished for a batting cage in his backyard; and Holin, a 10-year-old, whose love for music landed her onstage with her favorite singer. Proceeds raised through the holiday season will go toward funding more wishes. To learn more, visit www. wish.org/wishline.
