Pre-K counts at NHELC BY ANN MEAD ASH
S
arah Dye, lead teacher in the New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC) Pre-K Counts classroom, which first started serving 3- and 4-year-olds in September 2023, makes it clear that the free government program is not different from other preschools. “We work on everything a regular preschool works on,” she stated. “Kindergarten readiness is a big one.” Nearly 20 students work with Dye and her two assistants from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays as part of the Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts program that NHELC opened in partnership with IU13. “This is something we have been trying to do for a while,” said executive director Wanda Bortzel. “It was one of the goals of our strategic plan.” Bortzel worked with the IU13 to complete the paperwork to qualify. She pointed out that the program is open first to ELANCO-area residents who are
at 300% of the poverty level. “NHELC was invited by IU13 to participate in the PA Pre-K Counts grant as a community partner based on the center’s high-quality rating,” said IU13 representative Jennifer Houser. “We teach colors, numbers, shapes, and letters,” said Dye. “We do a lot of social-emotional (learning ) as well with this age,” she noted, adding that the social-emotional gap between ages 3, 4, and 5 is large. T he d ay for the students always begins by washing their hands followed by working to write their own names. “They sign in,” said Dye, who noted that children use nametags to work on creating the letters based on ability. She uses verbal cues to help older students work to form letters. “For some they don’t have the skills yet to draw a circle or a line, I do hand-overhand where they hold the pencil, and I coach them verbally as I write their names with them.”
The rest of the morning is filled with learning time. “Pre-K Counts is specific on how time is scheduled,” said Dye. Students must spend an hour at centers, which include science blocks, cutting, and a discovery table that encourages learning at play. “I go around the room and facilitate the learning and conversation,” said Dye, who said she may focus on the letter of the week, encouraging students to make the sound and discuss words that begin with the letter. A large group lesson may focus on either the social-emotional or creative curriculum the program uses, and small group time allows opportunities for specific activities for each lesson and individual work. Small groups may also focus on the time of the year, a craft, or a letter. Students also have snack, lunch, nap, and outdoor time. “They do a lot of learning, concentrating, and focusing,” said Dye. “They need that time to give their brains a break.”

It started with a Facebook post that alerted readers as to what to do if approached by a lone dog in a service vest. The post advised following the dog because the canine’s person might be in trouble. While the advice seemed reasonable, suspicion of such posts alerted this feature writer to seek an opinion from the staff of United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dog program. Puppy coordinator Kristy Conrad confirmed that the
advice is good. “If a service dog is separated from their person, that should be a reason for concern,” she stated. “If (the dog) turns around to take you, you should follow because the person could be in trouble,” added service dog program manager Lori Breece. These answers led to discussion of general service dog etiquette that respects the dog’s owner or handler - things we should all be aware of when we see a dog working in public. to the dog’s working status. According to Conrad, UDS’ service dogs and service dogs in training wear red vests, while ambassador dogs wear blue and facility dogs wear purple. Often s e r v i c e d o g v e s t s a re printed with words admonishing members of the public not to pet the dog or to ask before interacting. “It should be standard to ask the handler, ‘May I pet your dog?’” stated UDS service dog trainer Susan Vollmar. “It should always be the person (you engage) first, and not the dog,” added Breece. Vollmar went further, noting, “The public should not be soliciting the dog’s attention (in any way),” she said. “Don’t make noises. Don’t talk. Don’t look. Don’t touch.” The reasons behind such warnings go straight to the dog’s purpose in serving its person. “What if the dog is doing something for their person?” pointed out Breece, who noted that the dog may be focused on retrieving anything from a cane to a credit card from a wallet. “The task the dog is doing is important to the person’s independence,” she said. “Just don’t distract the dog.” Conrad suggested thinking of the dog in the same way one would any other a s s i s t i ve d e v i ce . “ Yo u wouldn’t hinder someone using their wheelchair or cane,” she stated. Breece stated that the same advice holds for service dogs in training. “Out of respect for the

doesn’t have one,” she said, noting that UDS has clients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), who really need their service dogs. “PTSD is a medical diagnosis a service dog can assist with,” she said, noting that one client almost gave up using a dog because of
comments made to him about not needing one. Instead, he persevered and has become an advocate for the program. Individuals wishing to lear n more may email lorig@udservices.org, call 717-715-8753, or visit https://udservices.org.

“We are looking for volunteers and for coaches willing to have character coaches (help out),” added FCA’s Kyle Martin, who works with students at Lampeter-Strasburg , Conesto ga Valle y, and Solanco high schools. Adam Burns, FCA area representative with Pequea Valley and Ephrata high schools, noted that the job of a character coach is to serve the coaching staff team in any way he or she can, and that a volunteer need not be proficient in a sport to be a character coach. Character coaches are asked to aid the head coach with a focus on social and emotional development of student-athletes. Objectives include encouraging athletes, working to create a positive culture, and helping to develop leadership characteristics in athletes. The first year
of serving usually involves building relationships, followed by working to develop leadership skills. “If the door opens to spiritual conversation, that’s awesome, but the sole purpose is to serve,” added Burns. Burns also noted that character coaching may look different depending on the specific sport and the players. He pointed out that Diana Roth, who is the FCA representative for ELANCO and Cocalico school districts and Lancaster Mennonite High School, is also a character coach for the Garden Spot girls’ soccer team. “It’s a team of girls with an all-male coaching staff,” explained Burns. “(Her ro l e ) o p e n s d o o r s fo r girls when they’re going through stuff. She is there to be on the bench and develop relationships.” Burns recalled that one of his first experiences as
a character coach for the Pequea Valley baseball team was to oversee six students who needed to complete schoolwork to be academically eligible to play. “We would have had to forfeit three games the following week because we would not have had enough players (if the work was not completed),” Burns explained. Martin noted that his experience has included working throug h emotions with a student who was benched by a coach due to a class disruption. He has also worked on character development with team leaders. “ The way you react to things on the field can change anyone’s perspective,” he said, noting that in one game an opposing team player made an inappropriate gesture as he crossed home plate. “How do we respond to that as a team?” he asked. “ We
don’t want to emotionally react. We want to take a deep breath and respond.” Swarr said that the FC A volunteer process includes an application and a 30-minute training video. “It’s an introduction to FCA’s discipleship strategy,” he said. “Ideally, (volunteers) meet regularly with the local staff people for resources and advice.” Burns added that character coaches are asked to be at each home game and to try to be at practice once or twice a week for 30 minutes as their schedule allows. FC A has chapters in nearly ever y L ancaster County school district, and the organization is eager to meet individuals who would like to serve as character coaches and team coaches who are open to taking part in the program. Readers who would like to know more may visit www .lancasterfca.org or email tvandalen@fca.org.
Dye said that because many of the children in the program are refugees, learning English is a priority. “One little girl came in not knowing any English, but she is now speaking to me in sentences,” she said. Bor tzel has already witnessed the classmates helping each other to learn. “I saw one of the children asking another, ‘ Which one is my name?’ One of
the other children got her nametag for her so she could write it (to sign in).” Four-year-old children in the program will go to kindergarten next year, but 3-year-olds will come back to continue to build on the skills they learned the year before. The current class is full and has a waiting list. Readers who have questions may call NHELC at 717-354-4440.

NHELC assistant director Jennifer Morales pointed out the importance of the social-emotional curriculum. “If they don’t have that in place, they can’t learn academically the way they need to,” she said. “It’s very important to focus on that social-emotional piece, so we have really embraced that. may believe trauma is normal. By making music, they’re more likely to talk when they have a problem. It brings about healing physically, mentally, scholastically and behaviorally.” Music also inspires work ethic, teamwork and achievement. As SWAN kids become more comfortable and advanced, they are afforded opportunities to present what they’ve learned musically. “ T heir per for mances are very important,” said Vuolo. “They get applauded and see that they have success. They gain confidence. They start owning the stage. It gives our students the joy of giving back to others. It’s an identity that’s very positive.” Vuolo was a violin professor at Lancaster Bible College in 2011 when she
founded SWAN. “I saw the impact music had on children,” said Vuolo, a 68-year-old resident of Downingtown. “My husband was counseling inmates and I started to obser ve how trauma impacted children. I’m an advocate for children. T hat ’s how SWA N got started.” “I started an after-school pro gram and then the School District of Lancaster became interested,” Vuolo continued. “Kids who are affected by incarceration fall through the cracks. Nonprofits are all about focusing on a problem, then educating the community about the problem and inspiring the community to join us in solving it.” For additional information on SWAN, go to www .swan4kids.org.

There are few things more detrimental to development than kids growing up without parental figures. Conversely, there are few things that possess more healing power than music. Scaling Walls A Note at a Time (SWAN) is performing some wonderful work with music and kids in the School District of Lancaster who have been affected by their parents’ incarceration. An organization without a brick-and-mortar building or office, SWAN is currently serving about 80 Lancaster city kids ages 5 to 17. “ S WA N ’s m u s i c a n d mental health program is a unique and innovative model,” said Diana Vuolo, SWAN’s founder and executive director. “The School District of Lancaster gets to be leaders. There is a mental health crisis among youth, and we are a solution. The impact SWAN has had has been lifesaving for some children and life-changing for many.” Vuolo estimated that on any given day in Lancaster County, 3,000 kids are affected by parental incarceration. She also said that there are 900 to 1,000 homeless children in the city of Lancaster and that many of them are affected by incarceration. “Incarceration has a great impact on children,” said Vuolo. “Of course, it separates them from their parents, and they have a sense of abandonment. There could be alcohol or drug abuse involved. Children can experience domestic violence.” “Parents are the primary people that children trust,”
continued Vuolo. “When that is removed, trust is remove d. T he ir w hole sense of self is lost. You’ll find they have difficulty learning. It often crushes them or breaks them.” SWAN identifies kids through school counselors and then reaches them through music, music lessons, singing, dancing and playing instruments like the violin, guitar, ukulele, drums and bass. But there are als o p er for mance , mentoring and spiritual counseling pieces involved with what it does. “Research underscores how much music helps develop brains,” said Vuolo. “By playing an instrument, kids can express themselves without words. It helps them socially. They have to focus. Our children

T h e Je s s Z i m m e r m a n Band is led by Jess Heitz, who is accompanied by guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis. This is the second year the outfit has been nominated for awards at the ceremony, which was hosted at the famous American country music venue the Grand Ole Opry. Last year, T h e Je s s Z i m m e r m a n Band received the Album of the Year award for its debut album “Breathe.” T his year, in addition to being nominated for multiple awards, the band performed during the ceremony. Out of nearly 1,000 applicants, only 10 artists were selected to play at the event. “It was really one of the biggest highlights of the year,” Heitz said. “The Grand Ole Opry is iconic for country music.” The Jess Zimmerman Band performed songs from an album released in May, titled “Be The Light.” “The idea behind‚ ‘Be The Light’ was putting together something that puts you in a good place when you listen to it,” said Heitz. “It’s bright and bold, and it shines through.” The group began to work on the album at the end of 2022, and it will be submitted for the 2024 Josie Music Awards. The Josie Music Awards specifically highlight independent artists, as in musicians who are not signed to a record label. Without a label, independent artists

Following The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success at last year’s Josie Music Awards, the group had opportunities throughout the year to share the stage with artists such as Shania
Twain, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band. “It’s been quite a year,” said Heitz. “ Winning Album of the Year helped set the tone for 2023. Going into 2024, who knows what’s in store?” Although The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple gigs booked in other states, the group will perform several shows in Lancaster and York counties in the new year. Emergency shelter to expand capacity The City of Lancaster, Lancaster County Food Hub, L ancaster County Housing & Redevelopment Authority, and Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition have announced that 80 emergency shelter beds will be made available for the winter season through Sunday, March 31. The Lancaster County Food Hub has committed to providing 40 additional emergency shelter beds, for a total of 80 beds, and is working to secure all necessar y resources
to increase capacity. Currently, the Food Hub’s low-barrier shelter offers 40 beds. Additional beds will made available as soon as staff members can be recruited. Additional financial resources are needed to ensure the expansion in shelter capacity. Community members may donate to the Lancaster County Homelessness and Afforda ble Ho u s i n g F u nd at www.lancfound.org/fund/ lancaster- county -home lessness-and-affordable

T hroug h a community effort, individuals exper iencing homelessness were moved to a temporary space in less than 24 hours. Additionally, the Food Hub is overseeing a portable toilet at the rear of the shelter for public use to fill the gap in overnight restroom accessibility in the downtown core.

Over the years, Binding Love has sent more than $40,000 to the homes, supporting hundreds of girls. “None of our volunteers receive any payment for their ser vices, even me as the founder,” Peifer explained. “ This has always been and always will be about making a difference and bringing hope to the girls in Thailand.” At the Columbia workshop, Impink hopes participants will take away an understanding of Binding Love’s mission along with a one-of-a-kind scarf. “It’s a great opportunity to put together fabric that meets your style and see it come together in a unique accessor y that only you will have,” she said.
She added that the organization is always looking for new opportunities to sell the scarves on a consignment basis, with the product currently available at Kindred Collections, Lancaster Sweet Shoppe in downtown Lancaster, Divine Consign in Manheim and New Holland Coffee Co. “Also, we accept donations of clothing that
can be cut into strips to be used in the making of scarves,” Impink said. “Sports scarves sell very well, and we always take donations of clothing with any sports team’s logo on them, high school, college or professional.” For more information on Binding Love or to register for the workshop, visit www.bindinglove.org.

Watching a documentary about the lack of women’s rights around the world, Audra Peifer felt moved to act. In 2012, she started Binding Love, a ministry that sells handmade scarves with proceeds benefiting Christian-based homes for girls in Thailand. Now you can help support the ministry at a Binding Love workshop in Columbia. The workshop will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, beginning at 1 p.m. at Kindred Collections, 452 Locust St., Columbia. Participants will have the opportunity to design their own scarf at the “make and take” event, with 50% of the cost for each scarf donated to the girls’ homes. “I will provide the fabrics and participants will select the pieces they want to make into their scarf,” explained Dory Impink, Lancaster coordinator of Binding Love. “One of our designers, Karen Graver, will assist them in how to lay out the scarf. Then, we will have a seamstress on hand, Marsheila Richter, to sew the scarf.” Any scarves not completed before the workshop wraps up at 4 p.m. will be sewn off-site, and the participant may pick up the completed scarf at Kindred Collections. Each scarf is made from upcycled clothing purchased at thrift stores or donated by individuals and organizations. “So much clothing is wasted in our country, but this gives those shirts, skirts and sweaters new life and an opportunity to make a difference,” Peifer said. The fabric is cut into patterns by volunteers, who also create the scar ves. T he f inishe d pro ducts

Lecture to explore gender and media Mennonite Life will partner with the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies to host a lecture about gender and media in two conservative communities on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in the chapel at Brethren Village, 3009 Lititz Pike, Lititz. Amish and ultra-Ortho-
dox Jewish communities are associated with religious obser vance and a renunciation of worldly things. Investigation of women’s relationship to media in these communities, however, reveals a more nuanced picture of the boundaries at play and women’s roles in negotiating them. In this talk,
Rivka Neriya-Ben Shahar will draw on extensive interviews with women in both traditions to compare how they do or do not use contemporary media technology. Neriya-Ben Shahar is a senior lecturer at Sapir Academic College in Sderot, Israel, where she teaches communications, religion,
and gender. She received her doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has been a Fulbright postdoctoral fellow. Her book, “Strictly Observant: Amish and Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Women Negotiating Media,” is forthcoming. T his event is free of charge and requires no registration.
