A Safety Net For Mental Health New Holland’s Celebrate Recovery Offers Encouragement And Support BY ANN MEAD ASH

“Isolation is one of the triggers for addictions, said Karl Stoltzfus, one of the leaders of ELANCO Celebrate Recovery (CR), referencing the stay-at-home recommendations and social distancing associated with COVID-19 restrictions. “One of the keys to coming out of (addiction) is coming out of isolation,

ith COVID-19 restrictions putting a damper on many activities during 2020, business owners, individuals, and organizations put an emphasis on finding creative ways to continue to celebrate the seasons. In East Earl, the residents of Cedar Grove Estates have been lighting up the neighborhood with luminarias each Christmas Eve since 2014, but this year, the lighting was extra special. Cookie Yarosewick, who coordinates the effort with help from her husband, Steve, asked the neighbors if it would be a good idea to light the candles two nights, especially when rain was predicted for Christmas Eve. “This year, with (more people) being home (due to COVID-19 restrictions), I took a vote and they voted to do it (two) nights, said Cookie. A supply of more than 800 candles was purchased to make the

neighborhood Facebook page to ask the neighbors for their opinions on the subject. When the response was favorable, Cookie and Steve went to work. “The (residents in the) development donate to help fund the candles, said Cookie, who noted that 450 are needed to light the neighborhood for just one night. Steve and Cookie collect water jugs and cut the tops off while retaining the handles. “Steve and I store the jugs in our basement, and we pull them out every year and clean them, said Cookie, who uses a hot blow dryer on the jugs before scooping in sand and adding candles. With the aid of neighbors, the jugs are distributed throughout the neighborhood, including the cul de sac and an area at the entrance along Route 897. Cookie said the distribution, which is usually done around 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve, takes a little longer because she wants the luminarias to look just right. Steve is an engineer

relighting possible. According to Cookie, the plan was to follow up Christmas Eve with a relighting on Christmas night. In the end, the luminarias were lit on Dec. 25 and Dec. 27. Lighting up a neighborhood with holiday luminarias was a dream of Cookie’s from the time she was young. Born and raised in a rural area of Narvon. She would go with her parents to see luminarias on Christmas Eve when she was a child. “I always loved driving through the developments and seeing (the luminarias), she recalled. “My parents had to explain that we were not in a development, so we couldn’t do this. In December of 2010, Cookie and Steve moved to Cedar Grove Estates off Route 897. After getting to know the neighbors, Cookie began discussing the idea of putting out lights or luminarias. “It was something I wanted to make a tradition, said Cookie, who turned to the

added Stoltzfus. “ We offer an opportunity for people to meet with those who understand. Hopefully, we can encourage one another. Now in its fourth year, ELANCO CR, a 12-step, Christ-centered discipleship recovery program, meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, in the Student Life Center. Participation is not limited to those struggling with substance abuse, but it is open to a number of issues including codependency, eating disorders, and anger. Cookie noted that the display can sometimes be seen from the area where Sheep Hill Road crosses Route 897. “It catches people’s eyes,” said Cookie, who added that the Cedar Grove Estates neighbors have noted additional traffic on Christmas Eve when visitors drive through to view the display. “It’s really beautiful just to see,” she said.

was not difficult. “The cherry tomatoes were a big pull,” said Hurst. When Marburger noted that cherry tomatoes had not been prevalent among the donations from the garden, Ranck-Hower stated that the majority had fed NHELC garden helpers. Hurst planted 200 pounds of potatoes and 300 sweet potato plants, and Marburger noted that an abundance of sweet potatoes had fed CrossNet clients, including families that are enrolled in the Power Packs Project.

She added that the 10pound cabbages were so large, she cut them in half for smaller families. About 12,749 pounds of vegetables were harvested. “I targeted for 12,000 pounds,” recalled Hurst. Marburger reported that more than 7,000 pounds of produce from the garden came to CrossNet. Readers who would like to know more about the Sprouts for Peace Garden may visit www.new hollandmc.org.

corn and picking bugs off potatoes. Meara, age 4, said she picked tomatoes, cucumbers, and corn, but she noted that she enjoyed chasing lightning bugs each Tuesday evening during the weekly watering and weeding. Andrew, also age 4, recalled eating the fresh cherry tomatoes. The growing season of 2020 was the second for the garden at the church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland. The season saw the garden expand to two plots - one near the church parking lot and the other at the far end of the church’s property which effectively doubled the size of the garden. Dawn Ranck-Hower, pastor at the church, explained that providing food for NHELC meals is the first priority for the harvest. The second is to provide food for NHELC families to take home with them. Next, food is sent to CrossNet Ministries Food and Nutrition Center, which is overseen by Amy Marburger. “The amount of produce coming in would easily have served more than 40 families every week,” recalled Marburger, who noted that garden project manager Ray Hurst began bringing produce to CrossNet in early May. Hurst said that lettuce and onions were first and that in early November, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli were still being harvested. In addition to CrossNet, the garden provided produce to the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank in Terre Hill and to Lighthouse Assembly of God Church for a twice-monthly food distribution. Hurst said that a group of about 15 to 20 volunteers made up of church members, employees from the adjacent Goodville Mutual office, families of NHELC students, and others came to help on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Other workers included students from Revelations of Freedom Ministries and young men sent to do community service by Judge Jonathan Heisse. Ranck-Hower recalled that the Tuesday gatherings often ended with watermelon snacks and in the fall with fellowship around a bonfire. Engaging NHELC students to help in the garden

recommendations. CR includes worship followed by small group meetings, which are divided by gender. Carol Musser, who leads the group with Stoltzfus, echoed his comments. “Isolation is not what (people in recovery) need,” she said. “It’s the worst thing for them.” Musser noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly exacerbated mental health issues. She stated that upended schedules, job loss, working remotely, and having children at home who need more help with schooling than in the past has caused stress, which is especially intensified in dysfunctional situations. Emphasizing that CR is Christ-centered, Musser pointed out that during meetings, participants have the opportunity to connect with God and one another. “People need a place where they can be themselves and not be judged but be encouraged and find the support to take the next step in their recovery,” she said. “It’s almost more essential in these tough times to have that available to bolster the fight for better mental health.” According to Musser, COVID-19 and restrictions associated with the pandemic have resulted in elevated levels of depression and anxiety. “The public needs to know that anxiety and depression are important (issues),” she said, noting that the organization offers support and encouragement to participants. “It is our forever family,” she said. “There’s energy that comes from likeminded people who know that everyone has struggles.” Musser added that the group welcomes those who do not have family or other support systems in the area. “If you have a hang-up, you’re welcome (to join us),” she said, adding that sobriety in one area may uncover other issues. “We will have people say, ‘I struggled with alcohol, but now I need to deal with the life issues that were (causing that),’” she shared. A year ago, friends and co-workers Holly Keim, an LPN serving at Valley View at Fairmount, and Katie Seibert, an RN working in the rehabilitation facility at Fairmount, put their heads together. The pair was considering organizing a food drive that would give employees and residents an opportunity to donate to area food pantries. “We talked about it at the beginning of 2020,” recalled Keim, “but when COVID-19 (restrictions) happened, we put it on hold.” Keim explained that during the lockdown, the pair did not want to encourage anyone to go out unnecessarily. “At the beginning of the shutdown, everyone was freaking out about toilet paper and stores had limits on how much you could buy. We didn’t think that would be a proper time (to hold a drive).” Seibert noted that instead, the friends waited until September and then went to Fairmount president/CEO Jerry Lile for permission to set up the drive. With Lile’s blessing, a competition was set up between the first floor, second floor, and administration. The

Katie Seibert (left) and Holly Keim organized a food drive at Fairmount that brought in nearly 2,500 pounds of food.

group that brought in the most items would receive a pizza party. A table was set up in the vestibule of the W heat Ridge building to allow residents in cottages and at Crest View to donate. Food items that were requested ranged from oatmeal to canned meats to condiments. Personal care items such as laundry detergent and, yes, toilet paper were also on the list. By Nov. 23, nearly 2,500 pounds of food had been donated. Items were divided between the food pantry at Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services and the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank, which is located in Terre Hill. The food was delivered to the food pantries on Nov. 24. The first floor triumphed by donating the most items to win the pizza party. Seibert said that she and Keim felt it was especially important to hold the drive at this time. “We have been blessed to continue to have jobd at Fairmount throughout all this,” she said. “A lot of people have been struggling because of COVID.” She and Keim were so pleased with the response, they hope to make the drive an annual event. “We would like to increase it next year,” said Seibert. “Around the holidays, people want to give, and for people who can’t afford to have (food for) Thanksgiving and Christmas this gives them the help that they need.” More information about Fairmount may be found at www.fairmounthomes.org.

PENNYSAVER

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society will offer an online workshop on the Pennsylvanian German folk art of fraktur on Saturday, Jan. 23, to 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The workshop will guide attendees through painting a fraktur with traditional colors and designs and creating a grain-painted frame to display their work. No experience is necessary. Lynn Janelle Sommer will guide the fraktur painting segment. Fraktur is a form of storytelling using watercolor and ink that celebrates life events and usually incorporates treasured spiritual mottos, verses, or poetry. Jim King will demonstrate the grain painting process. King learned the process by restoring antique blanket chests using traditional oil or vinegar glazes. There is a fee, and participants must also purchase a few supplies on their own before the class. After registering at http://bit.ly/ FrakturFrame, people will receive a Zoom link and a list of recommended supplies. The historical society will mail participants the design on watercolor paper as well as the frame. Any questions may be directed to Michael Bodner at operations@lmhs.org or 717-393-9745. The historical society’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and one another’s stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.

did. “I had signed a contract and was moving forward when COVID hit,” Hernandez-Tuten recalled. “I was not expecting to be writing during a pandemic with (all my family) in my house.” Calling the experience “the opposite of anything I had ever imagined,” HernandezTuten set about writing with three school-age sons attending school virtually and her husband teaching school virtually. “The concentration part was really hard,” she remembered. Eventually, she asked her husband to take the boys on a brief camping trip so she could have the solitude she needed to meet her deadlines, and she completed the book in about four months. About a month after the book was published, Hernandez-Tuten’s father died. To honor her father’s legacy, Hernandez-Tuten held a “Buy a Book, Donate a Book!” event on Nov. 9 at The Mustard Seed Boutique in Lititz. For each one of her books that was sold that day, Hernandez-Tuten donated a book to a local women’s shelter to help fulfill her passion to help women who have been abused. Readers may find writings by HernandezTuten at www.inspiredby familymag.com.

In Proverbs 31, the writer describes a woman of noble character. To many women studying the text, the characteristics of this woman may seem daunting. “A lot of women who read Proverbs 31 … walk away with a list of things to do,” said Lancaster County resident Mari Hernandez-Tuten, author of “Proverbs 31 in 5 Minutes a Day Bible Study,” which was released in early September. Hernandez-Tuten wanted to give women a different

said Hernandez-Tuten. With that focus in mind, Hernandez-Tuten pictured her reader as serious but busy. “I think of this Bible study as something for women who have been doing devotionals and want to go a little deeper but aren’t ready to sit down for one or two hours,” said HernandezTuten, who worked with her editor to offer readers studies that can be done in a short amount of time. The study is set up to be completed in seven weeks when the reader finishes a segment each day. HernandezTuten noted that the study offers variety. “Some days are short devotions with a question and sometimes an activity,” she said. There is an “Act” section that encourages the reader to “put into action what (she) just learned.” The study can be done individually or in groups. With more than 20 years of experience in ministry, Hernandez-Tuten had considered writing a book later on in her life. When she was contacted by a publisher at the end of 2019, she decided Mari Hernandez-Tuten, author of “Proverbs 31 in to accept the opportunity as a gift from God. 5 Minutes a Day Bible Her feelings about the Study,” has written the book to help busy women opportunity did not change, draw closer to God. but her circumstances soon

perspective on the virtues of the Proverbs 31 woman. “This woman (in Proverbs 31) is doing all these things, but I don’t think it’s just a day in her life. I think these are seasons throughout her life,” noted HernandezTuten. “You see her being productive, and you see her trusting God in the midst of all sorts of situations.” One goal of the book was to show women that they can make significant contributions. “This whole theme of having influence as women no matter where we are is ... a theme I want to share with other women,”
