Updating The Past NHAHS Re-Creates 1949 Photo BY ANN MEAD ASH
At 2 p.m. on Dec. 19, 2021, a crowd gathered in front of the Kauffman Building. About 40 New Holland residents dressed in Christmas sweaters and hats, as well as local photographers, took their places with a goal of re-creating a photo from more than 70 years ago. Steve Loewen, one of the founders
of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS), said that the idea originated in 2019 when a blowup of the original photo was displayed in the historical society museum where Santa Claus was greeting children. The original photo includes a 1948 Mack fire truck and a ladder to a second-floor window. The museum is located in the Kauffman Building, 207 E. Main St., New Holland. See NHAHS pg 2

When Kim Skinner, volunteer coordinator with Lancaster County Office of Aging, looked at the county map in early 2021, she saw that the ELANCO and Pequea Valley areas had no Apprise locations. Apprise offers help to new and existing Medicare beneficiaries by providing certified counselors who can help recipients reduce Medicare costs during the annual open enrollment period, which ran from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 in 2021. Fairmount Friends Hold Food Drive BY ANN MEAD ASH
A little over a year ago, two friends and co-workers at
Fairmount, 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata, held their first food drive. The pair - Valley View LPN Holly Keim and RN Katie Seibert, who

works in rehabilitation - had first conceived of the idea in early 2020. A second drive was held during the summer of 2021 and a third drive from Nov. 29 through Dec. 13. “It’s something we wanted to continue to do because there’s a need,” said Keim, who noted that she hung up flyers and sent out emails encouraging staff and residents to bring unexpired, nonperishable food items, as well as personal care items to the lobby, in the Wheat Ridge building. Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator, included the information in “In Touch,” the biweekly newsletter to all campus residents. See Fairmount pg 7

holding up their cell phones was taken. The 1949 photo celebrated the arrival of Santa Claus at Kauffman’s Hardware Store for a Christmas promotion. Mike Kauffman, son of Ken Kauffman and grandson of Clyde and Evelyn Kauffman, who owned the store in 1949, said that Santa Claus was played by Lloyd Burkhart and that he and Ernie Cedargreen, owner of the New Holland Airport, would fly around eastern Lancaster County tossing event flyers out an airplane window. After landing, Cedargreen would drive Burkhart to the hardware store in a convertible, where the Mack truck was parked outside, and the ladder was positioned for Santa to enter the second-floor window. Mike said the second floor was Toyland, complete with a cardboard hearth for Santa. Santa is not in the photo organizers chose to re-create. “(The building) has been a hardware store for 200 years,” said Loewen, who added that the store was called Renninger’s Hardware before being purchased by Clyde. “Clyde married (Evelyn) Renninger,” explained Loewen. “Clyde came back from (World War II) in 1946 or 1947 and started expanding the store.” Loewen noted that the scene is different than it was in 1949. The original shows another building close to the Kauffman Building. “Railroad Avenue isn’t there (in the photo),” remarked Loewen. “Harris Brothers Department Store was across an alley that went out of town. The department store was torn down in 1958, and Railroad Avenue was built.” The New Holland House sat on the opposite side of Railroad Avenue until about five years ago, when it was torn down. As the crowd began to disperse, Narene Dyer Dowling spent some time looking at the original photo and identifying about 13 people she remembered from 1949, noting they would have been students in seventh grade. She also identified George Houck, whom she said is now 102. More information about NHAHS may be found at https://nhhistorical.com.

Loewen recalled that he and fellow NHAHS founder Mitch Dissinger along with Ralph Hess, owner of the 1948 Mack truck in the photo, were discussing re-creating the scene. “We were kicking around this idea, and then COVID-19 got in the way,” reported Loewen. Instead, the plans came together in 2021. Hess brought the fire truck and put the ladder up to the window, which had been opened by Dissinger. Photographers set up on the opposite side of Main Street, which fire police closed briefly. After recreating the original, an updated version with those in the picture

Educating The Community About five years ago, Lanny Millette, director of donor relations with The Potter’s House and The Potter’s House of Ruth, heard Joel Jakubowski, who is now men’s ministry director with The Potter’s House, speak at a workshop in Quarryville. “I got excited about bringing that same type of information to the people of eastern Lancaster County,” recalled Millette. “The Potter’s House appreciates the way the community has supported us, and that was a way to give back information, help, and support.”
Millette approached Jere Cassel, pastor of Conestoga Church of the Brethren, about using the centrally located church to hold the workshop. Cassel and his congregation agreed to help, and the first of several seminars was held. That series will continue with Addiction: Signs, Symptoms, and Prevention, a talk by Jakubowski followed by time for questions and answers, at the church, 141 E. Main St., Leola, on Tuesday, Jan. 18, beginning at 7 p.m. Local resources, including G.O.A.L. Project and CCARS (Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services), will have displays in the church fellowship hall. The
Jere Cassel (left) and Joel Jakubowski will take part in an addiction workshop presented by The Potter’s House and The Potter’s House of Ruth at the Conestoga Church of the Brethren.
Lancaster County community is invited, and no registration is necessary to attend. “The Potter’s House is deeply committed to individual and community wellness, and so we provide these workshops as a service to the community,” noted Jakubowski, who added that this particular workshop is “geared toward giving families a preventative and appropriately reactive approach to the potential for addiction to enter into their families.” During his talk, Jakubowski will detail signs and symptoms of addiction, which affects nearly 70% of families. “One symptom is abandonment of routines and daily responsibilities,” said Jakubowski, who listed additional symptoms such as behavioral changes; emotional highs and lows; and changes in sleeping, eating, and social patterns, along with physical fatigue. He will address prevention of addiction problems through education, which includes having conversations with children prior to any signs or symptoms.

Matt Casey (113) also posted a pin while Gehr recorded a technical fall in the 145-pound bout, winning 18-3. Adam Hahn came up just short at 120, losing a 10-7 decision. At 126, Smucker lost by an even closer margin, 108 in sudden victory. BOYS BASKETBALL After a busy December in which the boys’ basketball team won two of its three Section Three games, going 3-5 overall, the Spartans saw a couple of postponements delay the continuation of the season. Garden Spot’s most recent match was a 65-36 non-league loss at Warwick on December 27. The Warriors, who improved to 6-1 with the win, had a huge second stanza in which they outscored the Spartans 19-4. Warwick’s Tate Landis led all scorers with 15 points. “(I’d like attendees to gain) a conscientious awareness of what addiction looks like so as to be able to identify it,” Jakubowski said. Millette added that education is essential to raising awareness. “It is recognizing that addiction touches us even when we are unaware,” he said, “because a neighbor or a family member could be struggling, and (knowing what to look for) will help to bring it to the surface.” Cassel pointed out that hosting the workshops has impacted the Conestoga Church congregation. “I think out of the addiction seminars
grew the interest in the church to make space for CCARS addiction counseling,” he said. “This is a continuation of making the community aware of a problem that we face.” CCARS, one of the few licensed establishments offering addiction counseling in the northern and eastern parts of Lancaster County, is housed in the church. The organization will be a sponsor of the workshop along with The Potter’s House. More information about The Potter’s House and The Potter’s House of Ruth may be found at www.thepotters houselancaster.com.

This year’s donations went to the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank, located in Terre Hill, and to Hello Charity, a food pantry in Denver. Seibert noted that the lobby location serves the collection well
because visitors to the area see the food piling up on tables and then want to take part. “Employees and residents are really giving,” said Keim. “It’s an easy place to hold a food drive.” More information about the mission of Fairmount may be found at https://fairmounthomes.org. 711 E.
