Daniel Vargas (left) and Elisabetta Vaccari, who are from Bolivia and Italy, respectively, are spending their senior high school year in New Holland through SHARE Education Resource Development Trust.

Exchange Students Happy In New Holland lisabetta Vaccari, from the town of Treviso near Venice, Italy, is glad she opted to stay the course and spend her senior year at Garden Spot High School (GSHS) in New Holland. “In March, (the exchange program) asked me if I wanted to change my plans,” recalled Vaccari, who noted that many other students chose to remain at home. “I am so happy to be here,” she said. “There was nothing to lose.” Vaccari and Daniel Vargas, an exchange student from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, are both completing their senior year at GSHS through SHARE Education Resource Development Trust. Their visit was arranged by Shannon Potales of Blue Ball, who has been hosting students in her home for several years. “(SHARE) asked me to help place students,” recalled Potales. “We had such good experiences, I thought it was important to do it.”

“I think people here want to know you. They want to know your culture, and they want to be friends with you,” stated Vaccari Both students said they feel they are experiencing more freedom here. Vaccari noted that in the area of Italy where she lives, some regions were still under lockdowns. Vargas said that Santa Cruz is a small city with a dense population. He recalled six months of lockdown

with designated hours to purchase groceries. “It’s better here (because people are spread out),” he said. While COVID-19 restrictions meant the students have missed out on some cultural experiences, both found positive activities to take part in. Vaccari played a full season of soccer, and Vargas ran cross-country. The students also attended two GSHS football games. Vaccari’s host family members took her to their beach house and planned a visit to their cabin. “They have been creating experiences for her,” shared Potales, who took Vargas to see her daughter, singer Juliana Wardle, perform in Maryland. Vargas noted that the GSHS building is a lot larger than the school he attends in Bolivia. “It’s a completely different culture (but) I love it,” said Vargas, noting that he has enjoyed new experiences, such as the change of seasons. “I don’t live very far from the Equator, so we don’t have such different seasons,” he explained.

Author Kim Kluxen Meredith had only met illustrator Lisa Madenspacher once before they began working together on Meredith’s latest book, “Henri’s Home,” which was published in October. “Henri’s Home” was inspired by summer vacations on the Jersey shore with Meredith’s grandchildren who prefer her made-up stories to

The issues surrounding COVID-19 complicated the experience this year for Potales, but she forged ahead, originally placing six students in the area. Several students decided to hold off, and others were grounded because they could not obtain visas while they were quarantined. Vargas was awarded his visa only about five days before his flight left Bolivia.

considering organizing a food drive that would give employees and residents an opportunity to donate to area food pantries. “We talked about it at the beginning of 2020,” recalled Keim, “but when COVID-19 (restrictions) happened, we put it on hold.” Keim explained that during the lockdown, the pair did not want to encourage anyone to go out unnecessarily. “At the beginning of the shutdown, everyone was freaking out about toilet paper and stores had limits on how much you could buy. We didn’t think that would be a proper time (to hold a drive).” Seibert noted that instead, the friends waited until September and then went to Fairmount president/CEO Jerry Lile for permission to set up the drive. else through grief. “Listen for the Whispers: Coping With Grief and Learning to Live Again” was first published in 2010. The book contains a workbook to help those who might be going through a similar experience. Meredith has conducted workshops and given talks based on the book. Meredith describes her second book, “Ocean Whispers,” published in 2018, as a gift book. It was based on a summer 2017 beach trip where each morning for 42 mornings, she picked up a shell and wrote a corresponding message to go with it in her blog, calling the series “The Daily Shell.” Meredith brought the writing together with her seashell photos to create a book that was sold in shops in Ocean City and Cape May, N.J., as well as Rehoboth, Del. More information about “Henri’s Home” may be found at https://kimkluxen meredith.com/henris-home. Madenspacher is a Lancaster County artist who has worked as an illustrator and received awards for her works of fine art. She has created classic car posters for the Lancaster Museum of Art and watercolors for Franklin & Marshall College. She has a gallery in Lancaster. books. “Henri the hermit crab and his family came into my head,” said Meredith, who told her friend Kathy Young the story while confessing, “But I cannot draw.” Young suggested Madenspacher as illustrator. The author and artist met once before the pandemic arrived, and Madenspacher showed Meredith samples of her work. “We hit it off right away. I knew she would be the right person,” recalled Meredith, who requested watercolors for a story that took place at the beach. For the next several months the pair communicated online as Meredith tweaked the story. “I would send her the text from a page, and she would interpret it so beautifully,” said Meredith. “It was a godsend that we were partnered together.” “Henri’s Home” is the story of a hermit crab who lives with his family under a fishing pier. The tale sets the stage for Henri’s “growing” experience as he and his sister and parents scavenge along the shoreline, duck predator seagulls, and play together. When Henri outgrows his shell, a new one is found, but as he adjusts to his larger home, a mishap occurs that separates Henri from his pier. His adventure gives him and the reader an opportunity to meet many ocean creatures and learn how they live as Henri endeavors to find his family again. The book, which features more than 40 of Madenspacher’s drawings, was formatted by Ashley Reinhard and printed by Yurchak Printing in Landisville. Originally from upstate New York, Meredith worked as a Spanish teacher and a paralegal before moving to Lancaster with her first husband David Kluxen. When their children were preteens, David died as a result of a single-car accident in the early 1990s. Meredith journaled to work her way through her grief. “At night, I would write and cry and put it away,” she recalled. When she told a friend about the journal, the friend suggested Meredith’s writings might help someone

Later, Kurland took the concept to a more urban setting in Maryland, where hundreds of students took part, some driving up to an hour for a class. A year ago, Kurland came to the Lancaster area where he took the position of youth sports and activities manager with the Manheim Township Recreation Department. His background came to the attention of his supervisor Matt Stopa, and the result is a homeschool gym class for Lancaster County students. Classes for any homeschooled children in the county were slated to begin on Jan. 4 at the Overlook Activity Center, 301 Golf

Previous years’ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfasts have attracted more than 700 community leaders who gathered in one place to honor King’s legacy through performances, community awards, and a keynote speech. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, when attendees gather, they will do so virtually. The 33rd annual event will be held Monday, Jan. 18, from 9 to 10 a.m. in a livestreamed format. The theme of this year’s breakfast, “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?” takes its name from King’s final book. The breakfast will feature Heather McGhee as the keynote speaker. McGhee is a senior fellow at Demos, a public policy think tank devoted to creating a democracy and economy rooted in racial equity. She holds a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Yale University and a law degree from the University of California at Berkley School of Law. McGhee is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Civic Participation, and she serves on the board of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and Indivisible. She is the author of “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together,” which is slated to be published in February. The honorary event chair is Ron Ford, the first African American elected to Lancaster City Council and the first African American elected president of the council. To date, he is the first and only African American elected as a Lancaster County commissioner. The breakfast, which is a fundraiser for the Crispus Attucks Community Center (CACC), will feature Danielle Woods of WGAL-TV as master of ceremonies. CACC has been a fixture in southeast Lancast-

Holding a safe but in-person event was a top goal for Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with Garden Spot Village (GSV) and now race director for the GSV Half Marathon and 10K scheduled for Saturday, March 27, beginning at 8 a.m. at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. “As a runner, I really want people to have the opportunity to run,â€? shared Cuthie, who noted that race volunteers, most of whom are GSV residents, have been open to safe ways they can help out so the event can be held. The 2020 race was held in a virtual format. Former race director Scott Miller, chief marketing director at GSV, began working with Cuthie over than a year ago to prepare her to take over the race, which has been a tradition in the area for more than a decade. “I spent time ‌ observing everything (Miller) and staff members were doing so I was familiar,â€? recalled Cuthie, who said when it was time to start planning the 2021 event, Miller asked if she was ready to take over. Well aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role. To overcome those challenges, Cuthie has been meeting with the GSV infection prevention specialist to discuss how problems would be mitigated in certain areas. A variety of changes will be implemented, including packet pickup with little or no contact; a “togoâ€? style dinner the night before the race; a wave start, which sends racers out at intervals, on race day; and a finisher’s zone Cuthie is calling “Accomplishment Alley,â€? where pickup of medals and food will be streamlined. All awards will be mailed. A virtual option will be offered for those who choose that method of completing the run. As it has in the past, the race will begin and end on the GSV

campus, following the same route that was instituted in 2019, when the race went from being a full marathon and a half marathon to a half marathon and a 10K. “On campus, we will follow whatever the state Department of Health guidelines are at the time (of the race), said Cuthie, who noted that everyone at GSV must wear a mask, including runners who may remove their masks at the start and put them back on at the finish. Cuthie is hopeful that this year’s event will be held live. “Even if it’s pared down, we can still offer it, assuming there are Runner Allison Cuthie will take over the helm of the no restrictions on large events, Garden Spot Village Half Marathon and 10K for 2021. said Cuthie, who noted organizers plan to make a final deci717-431-9426 7 17-431-9426 sion before Monday, March 1. 3772 E.
