Corley from pg 1 Kiana Corley will perform at Emmaus Road Café, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. Based out of Lancaster, Corley draws from the stylings of Corinne Bailey Rae, Tori Kelly, Lianne La Havas, Eryn Allen Kane, and other similar artists. Her sound is described as acoustic soul intertwined with twinges of pop. These influences can be heard on her debut EP, “One Way.” To learn more about Corley’s music, readers may visit https://kianacorley.band camp.com/. Admission is free. at Grace Baptist Church of Lancaster before relocating to Manheim Brethren in Christ Church last year. According to Ketchum, 270 guests attended in 2019, and organizers are projecting 370 guests for 2020. Donations are still needed to support Night to Shine. “One hundred dollars covers one guest and their buddy, plus all of the activities that we offer,” Ketchum said. Guests will be greeted by friendly paparazzi - ranging from photographers to local mascots surrounding a red carpet entrance. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be paired with for the evening. Hair and makeup and shoe shining services will be offered, too. Following a seated formal dinner, guests will have the chance
to dance, sing karaoke on stage, pose in a photo booth, play cornhole, win door prizes, get treats from the ice cream parlor and coffee station, and take limousine rides complete with sparkling cider and other goodies to add to the thrill. Upon their return to the building, guests will receive a crown and sash as their name is announced on the red carpet. All guests will receive a printed photo of themselves on the red carpet and a goodie bag of snacks and other fun items donated by local businesses. A parent and caregiver respite lounge will also be provided. “The impact that it makes is tremendous. Night to Shine is so special not only for the guests but for their families, too,” stated Ketchum. “Parents and caretakers get to see their child dressed up and given the royal treatment for one night. So many of the
parents come up to me and the other volunteers that night in tears, thanking us for doing it.” “This is the only time that a lot of the parents will get to see their kids dressed up like this. A lot of these guests will never get to have their own wedding or go to a gala or an event that’s just for them,” continued Ketchum. “This is something showing them that we value them and God values them.” More than 550 volunteers contributed to the success of the 2019 event, and organizers are seeking volunteers to help in a number of ways for 2020. Interested individuals may learn more and sign up at www.gbclancast er.org/night2shine. Donations may also be made at that website. Readers may also contact Ketchum at 717-314-7125 or j_bomb_67@yahoo.com for more information.

Pinewood Derby from pg 1 sausage, juice, and coffee. “(Attendees) can have breakfast and watch the competition,” she noted. Cuthie explained that one impetus for the public breakfast was the Cub Scouts’ new track and digital leader board. “We want to showcase this publicly because the New Holland American Legion Post 662 was kind
enough to make a donation to the Cub Scout Pack to fund a new track,” she stated. “We will be hosting representatives from the Legion and thanking them for their support at the same time,” Cuthie added, noting that the event will give Cub Scouts who are present a chance to thank the Legion members in person.
The breakfast and derby will give area residents a chance to interact with local young people. “It will be a fun opportunity to watch the Scouts and enjoy their excitement and share in supporting them,” said Cuthie. The breakfasts will be sold at a per person price, with a special discounted price for children age 12 and under. More information about Pack 148 may be found at www.pack148.scoutlander.com.

Fire Camp from pg 1 According to the chief, the idea will be to introduce the campers to firefighting as a community service by giving them opportunities to learn about activities involved, such as working with ropes and rigging. “(We will teach them about) using harnesses and anchoring ropes to a tree to go down a grade, fighting car fires, and firehouse basics, such as hose loads and handling hoses. Campers will learn about the use of SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) and possibly negotiate a maze in the dark using the SCBA. (That exercise is done) to get the impression of what it’s like in a real fire situation,” explained Darryl. GSFR member Stefan Kuenzli, who is a professional firefighter with Manheim Township, and Corbin Keiser, who is a professional firefighter in Reading, will teach campers. GSFR firefighter Cody Straub, a teacher at Brecknock Elementary, is heading the camp committee. Darryl noted that the campers will receive uniform fire company T-shirts and start each day with exercise to prepare for scheduled activities. Camp activities will also include an invitation to attend GSFR member training on Tuesday, June 23, and a special awards ceremony on June 26. “There will be a full dinner here at the fire company,” said Darryl, who noted that for GSFR mem-
bers the evening will be considered a class A uniform event. “(The campers’ parents will be invited, and campers will be given awards for their accomplishments during the week.” The campers will also have opportunities that evening to show parents around and tell them about what they have learned about the fire apparatus. The chief noted that space in the camp will be limited. “We want students who are serious about this,” he said. “(Prospective campers) will apply and interview (for available spots).” On Tuesday, March 24, interested students and parents are invited to visit the GSFR station where the camp will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. “We will hold an open house for parents to bring their children to see the agenda for the week and what they will be doing, and they will get to see the firehouse,” Darryl said. According to the chief, there is a sense of purpose and reward in firefighting. He noted that firefighting involves dedication and can be a long-term commitment. “You can continue to serve as a firefighter in this community for a lifetime,” he said. Readers who would like to know more about GSFR may visit www.gsfr39.net. Individuals who have questions about the camp may call 717-354-8311 or email chief@gsfr39.net.

The Lancaster School of Psychodrama and Experiential Psychotherapies will offer a fourpart series on trauma-informed care with experiential and creative arts methods. This quarterly series focuses on best practices for trauma-informed care, particularly the safe application of experiential therapies, including psychodrama, sociometry, Family Constellations, art making, and meditation. “Creating Safety and Connection: The Basics of TraumaInformed Care” will be offered on Friday, Jan. 31 (with a snow date of Friday, Feb. 7). “Creating Body Awareness: The Body Remembers What the Mind Forgets” will be presented on Friday, April 17. “Creating the Bigger Picture: Addressing and Healing Ancestral Trauma” will be offered on Friday, July 17, and “Creating Possibilities: Post-Traumatic Growth as a Reality” will be presented on Friday, Oct. 23. According to Karen Carnabucci, the school’s founder and one of the instructors of the series, trauma-informed care is an approach that acknowledges the effects of trauma, recognizes the impact of trauma on behavior, and responds in a manner that is supportive, encouraging, and empowering. Participants will learn how trauma-informed care is different than trauma treatment; a strength-based actionoriented model, adapted for a high level of safety and containment on multiple levels; how to deal with the reluctant or resistant client; how traumainformed care supports relapse prevention with addictions and eating disorders; how to safely incorporate experiential activities and creative arts therapies in trauma-informed care; and selfcare as a route to nourish the professional and provide deeper care of client or patient. The series is intended for mental health professionals, educators, physicians, nurses, health care administrators, first responders, creative arts therapists, alternative health practitioners, midwives, youth leaders, school counselors, human resources specialists, addictions professionals, and others interested in trauma-informed care. The instructors will be Carnabucci and Sharon Czabafy, both of whom have experience with trauma care and treatment, substance abuse and addictions, and experiential and expressive therapies. Classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, offering up to 24 CE credits for social workers, marriage and family therapists, and licensed counselors, plus psychodrama hours. Psychology and Act 48 credits are pending. An early bird discount will be available until Monday, Jan. 20. The fee includes handouts and healthy snacks. Readers may visit www.realtruekaren.com for additional information and registration links or call or text 717-466-0788.

with a much closer margin of victory on Thursday, edging Lampeter-Strasburg at home by a 34-33 count. The win improved Spot’s mark to 6-0 (5-0 league). Martin’s decision at 285 was a close 3-2 victory in overtime, giving Garden Spot a 34-30 lead. Adam Hahn had to hang on and not get pinned in order for his team to prevail. Austin Reiff of L-S did record a 5-2 decision, which was not enough for the Pioneers to catch Garden Spot. The Pioneers opened with a pin at the 113-pound class. The Spartans responded with Schilling’s 6-3 decision and Grant Gehr’s 9-3 win to draw even at 6-6.

The Garden Spot wrestlers defeated Donegal in a LancasterLebanon League match on Wednesday, January 8, at Donegal. The Spartans improved to 4-0 in the league. Their 55-24 victory in this Section Two battle was the closest any league opponent has come. In fact, the Spartans trailed briefly before taking command of the match with four pins, a technical fall, a major decision as well as three Donegal forfeits gave Garden Spot eight of the final nine bouts. Drew Finkey led off for Garden Spot and promptly posted a pin 30
seconds into the 152-pound bout. After Donegal tied the score at 6-6, Alan Perez came through with a decisive 17-3 major decision. Senior Charles Martin came through with a pin at the heavyweight battle while Adam Hahn (106) earned six uncontested points on a forfeit as did Jeremy Schilling at 120. Garrett Gehr (126) and Gunner Gehr (145) both earned their respective pins in the first period. Mason Casey majored Taj Younger 15-5 at 132 while Josh Groff overpowered his opponent in a 15-0 technical at 138. The Spartans remained unbeaten

Strategies that can help Pennsylvanians protect themselves include verifying that a charity is legitimate, never following links in unsolicited emails, typing the website directly into their browser, being wary of any transaction involving checks, remembering that legitimate calls will not ask to “verify your information” and hanging up on any doubtful call. Anyone can contact the DoBS at 800-PA-BANKS or 800-7222657 to ask questions or file complaints about financial transactions, companies or products. Those who believe they have fallen victim to a scam are asked to contact local law enforcement.

The Arts at Millersville will present “We Shall Overcome - A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” on Friday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Winter Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. Multi-instrumentalist and producer Damien Sneed, who specializes in classical, jazz, and sanctified soul, recently premiered his new opera, “We Shall Overcome Our Journey: 400 Years From Africa to Jamestown,” at Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern Auditorium/Ronald O. Perelman Stage. The opera showcases musical styles from the African American diaspora from African rhythms to spirituals to gospel to jazz, all interwoven in the classical genre. Sneed has been touring “We Shall Overcome - A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” throughout the United States and Canada. Joining Sneed on tour is an ensemble of multigenre vocalists, including Chenee Campbell, Anitra McKinney, Alicia Peters-Jordan, Linny Smith, and Markita Knight, and musicians Joel Tate, drums; Arthur Sutton, bass; and Marquéz Cassidy, keyboards. The ensemble will be joined on Jan. 24 by a special guest, the J. P. McCaskey High School gospel choir. “We Shall Overcome” is a joyous celebration reflecting on the triumphant and victorious moments during the United States’ history and showcasing the musical repertoire that electrified generations of civil rights activists and defenders. The musical selections are interwoven with spoken word from the recorded speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK). The production ties together music and culture elements that include traditional gospel, modern gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway, and spirituals. Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Donny Hathaway, and “The Wiz” will be represented. Sneed has worked with jazz, classical, pop, and rhythm and

blues legends, including the late Aretha Franklin and Jessye Norman. He is featured on Norman’s forthcoming and final recording, “Bound for the Promised Land,” on Albany Records. Sneed was also commissioned to compose a new chamber opera, “Marian’s Song,” about the life of Marian Anderson, for Houston Grand Opera, which will have its world premiere on Thursday, March 5, at the Cullen Theater at the Wortham Center. In addition to “Marian’s Song,” Sneed was commissioned to compose a symphony in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen, with its world premiere slated for summer 2020 in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The J. P. McCaskey High School gospel choir is directed by Colette Stephens. The auditioned choir is a yearlong course that meets daily. In the course, students study inspirational choral music, various singing styles, and traditional composers such as Tommy Dorsey and James Cleveland as well as contemporary songwriters like Kirk Franklin, Byron Cage, and Hezekiah Walker. The students commit to a rigorous schedule of engagements and concerts throughout the year, and participation at all rehearsal activities and performances is mandatory. Tickets will be required for admission to the concert. Separate prices have been set for adults, for Millersville University (MU) students, and for all other students. A discount is available for groups of 10 or more people. Tickets may be purchased at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and at the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, on MU’s campus from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall - commonly referred to as The Wall. The VVMF has been posting the photos on a virtual Wall of Faces in order to put a face and a story to every name to help preserve each person’s legacy. The project aims to show the families and friends of the Pennsylvanians lost in Vietnam that their loved ones will not be forgotten. Volunteers from around the country were instrumental in locating these photos and spreading the word about the Wall of Faces effort. As an official partner in the Department of Defense’s Commemoration of the
50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, completing the Wall of Faces project is one way the DMVA is showing its support of the service, sacrifice, and legacy of Vietnam veterans. Since the VVMF launched the photo campaign in October 2009, the VVMF has located photos for more than 57,900 of the names inscribed on the memorial. To date, 44 states, two U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia have found every photo for their fallen. To view the virtual Wall of Faces, which includes all 3,150 Pennsylvanians, readers may visit www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces.
Purse Auction Raises Funds Approximately 150 people from across Lancaster County attended the ninth annual Pursenalities Party on Nov. 6, 2019, at the Eden Resort in Lancaster. The event raised $7,800 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health for all, and the Go Red for Women movement. More than 60 designer purses donated by local individuals and businesses were up for bids in a silent auction while guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres. Each purse was displayed with infor-
mation about the “pursenality” who donated the bag. Proceeds from the event will support the Go Red for Women campaign and the donation of Infant CPR Anytime kits and other resources to Lancaster County hospitals. The event served as a kick-off to the American Heart Association’s annual Go Red for Women campaign, which will include the celebration of National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 7, and the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon on Thursday, April 30, at
Rock Lititz Pod 2. The Pursenalities Party was chaired by Taylor Rotay. For more information, readers may contact Bill Coder at 717-7301736 or bill.coder@heart.org.

CHEWY HOMEMADE SALTED CARAMELS Sweet, salty, chewy, and melt-in-your mouth delicious, these homemade salted caramels are the best of the best. - 1 & 1/2 cups heavy cream - 1 cup Golden Barrel Organic Cane Sugar - 1/2 cup packed Golden Barrel Light Brown Sugar
- 1/3 cup Golden Barrel Light Corn Syrup - 1 tsp. salt - 1 tbsp. butter, softened - coarse sea salt for topping
Line an 8x8" pan with aluminum foil that overextends the pan on all sides (to lift out for easy removal). Lightly grease foil with butter. Combine cream, sugars, and light corn syrup in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon until sugars are melted and mixture starts to boil. Stop stirring. Attach a candy thermometer to rim of pan making sure the bottom of the thermometer doesn't touch the bottom of pan. Let mixture boil until temperature reaches 245 degrees F (it'll take time so be patient!) As soon as it reaches 245 degrees, remove from heat and add in salt and butter. Stir until butter melts. Pour hot mixture into prepared pan and sprinkle coarse salt over top. Let set uncovered on counter for 4 hours or overnight. Once set, remove caramel from pan by lifting the foil. Remove foil and cut into rectangles or squares. Wrap individually in wax paper wrappers. Store at room temperature.

Galbreath, a graduate of Villanova University, is a student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. When he was a small child, his life was saved by a diagnosis and subsequent treatment at Lancaster General Hospital. As a result of that experience, over time the treating physician

Diagnosed with a pediatric disability at an early age, Bankert shared that he seeks to treat patients with a high level of compassion and understanding. Maillie graduated from University of Notre Dame and, following a gap year researching access to cancer care in Tanzania as a U.S. Fulbright scholar, is currently in his first year at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Making A Difference Every Day In The Field of Senior Care The field of senior care offers employment opportunities for people with a variety of skills and talents. The senior care industry includes many different positions that are vital to ensuring that senior living communities provide the best possible care for residents as they age. “One of the many perks (of working in senior care) is having the opportunity to be part of something bigger and having the opportunity each and every day to affect people’s lives in a positive way,” explained Kim Focht, director of human resources at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. “Our residents are our primary focus,” noted Kelly Miller, director of sales and marketing at Heatherwood Senior Living Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey FT & PT COOKS FT & PT DIETARY SERVERS Great Benefits: Paid Holidays, Sick & Vacation Days for FT and PT Associates. Brook. “This is their home, and they should be made to feel important and well cared for. Patience and understanding are key. Caring about how well our residents are treated is our main focus.” For Alicia Erdman, sales director for Legend Senior Living of Lititz, 80 W. Millport Road, something she enjoys about working in the senior care industry is the “satisfaction of knowing you were able to help a family and they no longer have to worry about their loved one’s overall safety.” Nurses are in high demand to fill various roles within senior care. Retirement communities offer positions for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Registered Nursing Assessment Coordinators. A license is required to work as an RN or LPN. A certification is needed to serve as a CNA, but some senior care employers will help staff members obtain the certification. “We (at QPRC) do provide this education as well as pay our staff to get the education,” noted Focht. Personal care aides and medication technicians are also needed. A certification is required to serve as a med tech, with some employers providing and paying for the necessary training to staff members. “If you are serious, after 90 days
(at Heatherwood), we will train and pay for the med tech certification, with the promise of a one-year employee commitment,” noted Miller. Other positions offered in the field of senior care include several roles within dining services for servers, cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, dietary aides, and managers. Also needed are housekeepers, laundry aides and assistants, maintenance and renovations team members, activities aides, and receptionists. The field of senior care also includes home care professionals, who serve as caregivers, companions, and transportation providers to help seniors continue to live independently in their homes. Full-time, part-time, temporary, and PRN (as needed) employment opportunities are offered in the field of senior care. As facilities care for residents around the clock, employees are needed for all shifts. Nursing jobs offer a variety of options and flexibility, allowing for people craft a work schedule that fits with their current season of life and family obligations. No matter which position they are interested in, one key attribute for senior care jobseekers to exhibit is dependability. “We’re looking for someone who is reliable and shares a passion for
seniors,” explained Erdman. Other representatives from the senior care industry noted that displaying some longevity on a resume, without a lot of job hopping, is also a plus for those looking to get hired. Focht added that employers also look for individuals who have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in the industry is preferred, but not required. “Bring a positive, team-like attitude, and we will train you,” noted Miller. “These careers require a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. They are both physically and emotionally demanding, and - at the same time - endlessly rewarding,” said Focht.
