W hen Abby Moyer was a freshman at Garden Spot High School (GSHS) dur ing the 2021-22 school year, she joined the Youth Alive Bible Club led by teacher Colleen Bowden. While Moyer enjoyed attending, she felt called to do more than just be a member. “I started by leading prayer,” said Moyer, who soon partnered with fellow student Savannah Gray to lead the group. Youth Alive is a ministry of
PennDelYouth, which is associated with the Assemblies of God Churches in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Moyer and Gray worked with Landon Ritchie, youth and connections pastor with Lighthouse Assembly of God, to write a mission statement for the club. “We serve to be a safe place where students can gather together to grow in their faith and talk about God’s Word and share their faith with their classmates,” said Moyer, who now shares the mission at the everyother-week meetings followed

In her quest to bring lessons from the Fruits of the Spirit, found in Galatians 5:22-23, to both children and adults, local author Shelleen Weaver has produced four books. The most recent is “Grizz Bear and Skippy Cricket,” the tale of a ferocious and impatient bear whose w inter hib er nation is interrupted by an annoying cricket.
As with all Weaver ’s “Fruit Fables,” the books, which employ Weaver’s rhymes alongside Cody Wood’s illustrations, contain nuggets of truth for all family members. “It’s about a control freak who has a situation he can’t control,” explained Weaver. “He tries to control it with smashing (the cricket), but he can’t because (the bug) is out of reach. His next form of control is intimidation, which doesn’t work

Ideas for healthy eating Diet and exercise are the key components of maintaining a healthy weight and protecting against chronic disease. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, eating smart and being active have similar effects, including reducing risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, some cancers, and diabetes. In addition, these healthy living strategies can improve personal appearance and can improve overall well-being, helping people live longer and maintain their independence. People may wonder how to eat better when faced with many diets, each of which promises great results. Navigating the options can be confusing, and there is no mag ic formula to eating better. Common sense can come into play when attempting to eat better, and individuals also can consider the following strategies to make a diet work for them as they
seek to live healthier. - Eat colorful, varied, nutritionally dense foods. Medical News Today says each meal should be 50% fruit and vegetables, 25% whole grains, and 25% protein. Select an array of colorful foods that will provide most of the nutrients needed. - Choose fiber-rich foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes are good sources of fiber. Fiber helps people maintain digestive health and can help a person to feel fuller longer, reducing the potential for overeating, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. - Note how you feel after eating. Create a food journal where you jot down notes about how you feel after eating certain foods. If you notice that certain foods or ingredients trigger adverse reactions, it may be worth avoiding that type of food or looking for an alternative. Stomach upset or
bloating after eating dairy, for example, may indicate an intolerance for lactose. - Explore the Mediterranean diet. While it’s wise to avoid fad diets that often produce short-term but unsustainable results, the Mediterranean diet has stood the test of time. According to the authors of a study published in JAMA Network Open in October 2023, middle-aged and older adults who were overweight or obese and had metabolic syndrome lost visceral fat (belly fat) a nd s h o we d a g re ate r reduction in the percentage of total fat while adhering to a Mediterranean diet. They also had delayed loss of lean body mass, which often comes with aging. Mediterranean diets prioritize legumes, seafood, vegetables, and healthful fats like olive oil. - Control portion sizes. Sometimes it’s not what a person eats but how much he or she eats that affects health. Weighing
and measuring food can help a p ers on control portions and understand how many calories he or she is consuming each day. The National Institutes of Health says eating plans that favor 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day for women and 1,500 to 1,800 for men are good targets to lose weight at a healthy pace when combined with moderate exercise. - Focus on adding healthy foods to your diet rather than on trying to avoid detrimental foods. The greater quantity of healthy foods are eaten, the more unhealthy ones will fall by the wayside. Focusing on the positive can help people feel less restricted by healthy eating plans. B alanced eating is a major component of a healthy lifestyle. While there are many fad diets, eating plans with a proven t r a c k re c o rd t h a t a re supported by the medical community may be the best bet.
Fill up on healthy foods Hunger is one of the more common issues individuals encounter when transitioning to a nutritious diet. Many people aspire to eat healthier in an effort to lose weight gained due to overeating. That can make the adjustment more difficult, as individuals are accustomed to eating to a point of fullness. How-

ever, there’s good news for people in that situation, as a variety of healthy foods can provide a feeling of fullness and put an end to between-meal hunger pangs. - Water: Water may not be a food, but drinking more of it can provide a feeling of fullness that people are accustomed to. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics notes that symptoms of mild dehydration often present as feelings of hunger. In addition, the PKD Foundation reports that clinical studies have found that 37% of people mistake thirst for hunger because signals that indicate thirst are weak. Dry eyes, feeling sluggish, increased heart rate, and headache are some potential warning signs of thirst. So when mid-afternoon hunger pangs hit , tr y drinking some water before reaching for a snack. - Vegetables: One of the
misconceptions concerning food and fullness is that low-calorie foods are unlikely to be filling. That is not true, and vegetables are a testament to how filling certain low-calorie foods can be. According to the Mayo Clinic, most vegetables are low in calories but high in volume or weight. That means they can contribute to feelings of fullness without compromising individuals’ efforts to eat healthy. - Baked potatoes: Nearly 30 years ago, researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia developed a satiety index in an effort to measure how effective certain foods were at helping people feel full. No food finished with a higher satiety ranking than baked potatoes. That’s good news for individuals looking to transition to a nutritious diet, as baked potatoes without any added butter or other toppings are low in sodium and do not contain any cholesterol. Baked potatoes also
are a good source of vitamin C and dietary fiber. Buttering a baked potato can compromise its nutritional value, so consider sprinkling pepper in place of butter if you need some additional flavor. - Pulses: One thing to look for to overcome hunger pangs while trying to eat healthy is slowly digested foods. Pulses - the seeds of legume plants - fit that bill. Carbs that the body does not digest quickly can help individuals avoid hunger pangs, and pulses are slow to digest. Beans, lentils and peas are some examples of pulses. Adding pulses to salads or even using pulses like lentils as the foundation for a salad is a great way to eat healthy and avoid hunger. Hunger pangs can compromise a healthy diet. Thankfully, many healthy foods pack a nutritional punch and provide a feeling of fullness that can reduce the likelihood of potentially har mful between-meal snacking.

CrossNet Ministries, noted that the ministry is thankful for the drive. “We are grateful to FCA NHES Huddle for collecting hats and scarves for families in the ELANCO community,” said Dahl, who pointed that the items from the drive will be made available to members of the community who need them to keep warm this winter. “As we hit these cold winter months, having these items available is a huge blessing and makes an impact for many local families,” she said. Currently, NHES is the only elementar y school in the EL ANCO School District to hold a Huddle. “We have teachers at the other schools willing to be advisers,” said Burns, but he added that a student at the school must request a Huddle before one may be formed. Since Moyer and Gray began leading the club, it has grown from fewer than 10 students to more than 20. The club also merged with another Bible club at the school. Moyer’s experience with the club and openness to the leading of the Holy Spirit led Ritchie to ask her to preach at a Fifth Quarter event held at the church, 105 Earland Drive, New Holland, following select GSHS home football games. Fifth Quar ters include games, refreshments, and a message for students who choose to attend. In 2023, Ritchie preached at the Sept. 15 Fifth Quarter, and he asked Moyer to preach at the Oct. 27 event. Prior to that event, Moyer’s mother asked her if she was nervous. “I said, ‘No,’” recalled Moyer. “I want to tell them about Jesus so that nobody will be able to say I didn’t tell them.” Moyer preached about the mental, emotional, and spiritual freedom that can be found in Christ. “Abby gave a salvation message, and she knocked it out of the park,” reported Ritchie, who added that more than 40 students accepted Jesus in front of all their peers in the church parking lot. “For her to have that (response) on her first preaching in that setting … it was like hitting a grand slam. It was phenomenal.” M o ye r h a s a t te n d e d Pe n n D e l Yo u t h e v e n t s and training experiences since 2021. From Jan. 12 through 14, she was in Carlisle at the organization’s winter retreat where she spoke about her experience preaching at Fifth Quarter to more than 500 students. Ritchie feels that Moyer’s openness to God’s call on her life is crucial to her efforts. “What’s different about Youth Alive is we believe in the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to be witnesses and share

our faith,” he said. “To see Abby allow the power of the Holy Spirit to work in and through her life has really been so cool.” Ritchie sees hope in the willingness of students like Moyer and Gray to work on God’s behalf. “Everybody is saying the future is bleak and that the next generation has problems and issues,” said Ritchie. “I believe God has a plan for
the next generation, and young people like Abby are making a difference.” Students who would like to take part in a Youth Alive Bible Club at GSHS or Garden Spot Middle School may contact the school offices to sign up. From Doug: The life of discipleship is “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.” The journey begins when we recognize who God is and who we are and call to Him as Psalm 130 discusses. My thought is to use my life’s journey to illustrate the life of obedience which includes moments of victory, moments of defeat, moments of loss, and moments of joy. Doug Myer began his management career with WDAC Radio Company in 1999 and currently oversees all operations. He is a graduate of the Moody Bible Institute and Lancaster Bible College, where he met his wife, Janet. They live in Strasburg and have three children and three grandchildren and counting.

because Skippy is oblivious.” Weaver explained that the bear stews a while before calming down and allowing the cricket’s song to lull him into memories and dreams of summer. Grizz wakes up with a new outlook. “Sometimes it’s better to be a reed that can bend (rather than) something that breaks when it gets windy,” said Weaver. “I write fables,” noted Weaver, explaining that her stories use animal characters to teach a moral or a principle or a character quality. “We have fewer defenses up when we hear a story.” To enhance the lesson, Weaver ends each book with a “Let’s Chew on It …” section of discussion questions. The most recent includes: “Was Grizz Bear used to getting his way?” and “Was Skippy Cricket trying to annoy him?” The books each include a verse from Galatians, an intentional prayer, and a special song. “It’s built to almost be a cur r iculum,” said Weaver, who noted that the books grew out of her son’s
demands for a bedtime story each night. “It started with my daughters, but my son (Adrian) was tenacious,” Weaver recalled. “He really developed (storytelling) in me.” Weaver said she often asked her son for a prompt to start the story, such as a type of animal or the name of the animal. One night, Adrian asked for a story about a dog named “Clammord.” “But Clammord was not a dog,” said Weaver. “He was a loud, clamorous duck.” Clammord will be the main character of Weaver’s next book, “Clammord Is Kind.” “Clammord is obliviously annoying , and he gets shamed and ostracized because he’s not gifted in the way (the others in his community) are, but he returns that cruelty with kindness,” said Weaver. Weaver’s first book in the series, “Love Bird,” about a bird that rudely repeats everything that is said to him, came out in 2020. In late 2021, Weaver released “Glub Glum’s Ship Flip,” about a fish she called
“a bottom feeder ” with “victim mentality pessimism.” “Sir Beaver Finds the Missing Peace” tackles workaholism with poetry that evokes pictures, with lines such as: “Once upon a winding creek, where brook trout swim and bullfrogs leap. Sir Beaver lived, but couldn’t sleep nor leave his work for fun.” Weaver is also a musician and singer, and she likens her books to her musical creativity. “I write the stories like I write music,” she said. “You can use one word and carry it

Giant announces Feeding School Kids initiative
T h e G i a n t C o m p a ny recently announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative. Customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, buy a reusable bag or convert their Choice points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs. The initiative, now in its fourth year, will run for three months through Sunday, March 31, to help meet the needs of many students. T his year, Giant will donate $100,000 to launch the pro gram. T hroug h Feeding School Kids, public school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs. For example, in Pennsylvania, Norristown School District distributed 10,000 meal boxes in the summer containing five breakfasts and five lunches in each box and York Suburban School District restocked its pantry to double its service to 175 families.
