The mission of the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans is to provide handmade quilts and afghans to several area hospice centers where they are distributed to veterans. Currently, creations are delivered to the Coatesville and Lebanon VA hospitals, AseraCare Hospice, Compassus, Caring Hospice Services, and Hospice & Community Care. The Stitchers is a committee of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA). Members of the Stitchers volunteer their time, and necessary supplies have generally been donated by the volunteers for the more than 125 blankets that have been given to veterans so far. Twice a year, amateur radio operators - colloquially known as ham radio operators - set up their equipment out of doors and attempt to contact as many people around the globe as possible. “We’re practicing for emergencies,” explained Red Rose Repeater Association (RRRA) president Daniel Boone of Willow Street. “Disasters don’t know the seasons of the year.” Field days are 24-hour events in order to include amateur radio enthusiasts in all time zones, as well as to give individuals experience broadcasting during the day and night. Amber Pavalko of Bowmansville wanted to go for bicycle rides with her 6-year-old daughter, Addie. What should be a simple desire is complicated by the fact that Amber has Chiari malformation, a neurological condition in which the brain extends into the spinal column. Chiari is associated with a variety of other physical problems including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), an inheritable connective tissue disorder, and syringomyelia, which occurs when a syrinx, a cyst caused by a buildup of fluid, forms in the spinal cord. Amber has been dealing with the issues related to Chiari since the birth of her daughter in July 2013. In the time since, she has been undergoing both physical and occupational therapy, but her health issues have made it difficult for her to make progress in either area. In the last year, Amber has

those who embody the spirit and vision of Olivia Stoner,” said Mueller, adding that recipients will be recognized for reflecting Stoner’s commitment to creating a better life for individuals with disabilities. At the end of August 2019, the first award was given to Benjamin and Mignon Bowman. Now in their 90s, the couple has supported the work of the ODC, and its participants, for more than 50 years. Ben first became involved in the early 1960s as a member of the AMBUCS, which raised funds for ODC. In 1965, when Ben was heading up Wickersham Construction, the company built the second addition to the ODC building. Wickersham
built the third addition in 1984. In the 1980s, Ben served as board president. “(The Bowmans) have been big supporters (of ODC),” said Mueller of Ben and Mignon, who have been generous with both their time and finances. Mignon is part of the ODC Auxiliary that raises money for the organization. “They are a sweet couple, and are still active with ODC in a variety of ways.” The second award was presented in October 2019 to Kinsey’s Outdoors in Mount Joy, which makes archery supplies and outdoor gear. “(Kinsey’s) has embraced the mission of ODC and our goal of finding meaningful employment for individuals with developmental disabilities,” said Mueller, who added that Kinsey’s was ODC’s first small group employment site. “ODC individuals who work there alongside other employees have become a part of the Kinsey’s family,” said Mueller. “(ODC participants) love going out there.” The skill set of participants has been a good fit with Kinsey’s, where tasks

include folding and packing items such as T-shirts, archery equipment, traps, and gloves. Gregg Richards, executive director of ODC, lauded the recipients of both awards. “I can’t say enough good things about them,” said Richards. “The awards are well deserved, and it’s wonderful to have support from such good people,” he said, adding, “In the case of the Bowmans, they literally built the building.” Stoner founded ODC along with Marian Headrick in 1948. She remained an integral part of the organization into the early 1980s. “(Stoner) served on the board and was very active in what was being done (at ODC),” said Mueller. “She was a forwardthinking, proactive, and strong woman who really had a vision for ODC that was ahead of the times.” Stoner’s interest in founding ODC was tied to a nephew who had developmental disabilities and did not have many opportunities in the 1940s. “She didn’t like (his) options,” said Mueller. “Who we are (as an organization) today is based on her vision.” The Stoner Award is unique, so ODC sought an item to exemplify the Stoner vision by working with the glass blowers at the Stiegel Glassworks in Manheim. to work toward, she said she wanted to ride a bike with Addie. Finding a bicycle that would work for her, however, was no easy task. “I have balance issues, and I can’t turn my head, so a regular bike would not be an option,” explained Amber, who looked at recumbent bicycles and found their price tag to be a problem as well. “When you’re sick, you spend so much money traveling to appointments and all the things you need,” she explained. Erica was not ready to give up. She contacted her friend Victoria Warfel of Lititz AMBUCS, a civic group that works to create independence and mobility for people with disabilities, and asked if the organization, known for providing adaptive bicycles for children, could help an adult. “They have all types of bikes, but you need a therapist to figure out what type of bike will work for an individual,” reported Erica. “I figured out what I thought would work best for (Amber),” she said. AMBUCS was able to provide Amber with a bike that could work for her at no cost. The bike has three wheels, hand brakes, and number of special mirrors so
Amber can see behind her. She hopes to be able to ride it with Addie by spring. Currently, Amber is looking for a system to turn the bike into a trainer for stationary use indoors and doing modified exercises to help her build the muscles she will need to be able to ride. Amber’s Chiari issues have required her to undergo 15 brain and spinal cord surgeries, some of which were necessary to save her life. The high pressure in her brain caused by excess spinal fluid had to be relieved. “(In 2017), my neurosurgeon stabilized my spine … which decreases a lot of mobility, but it saved my life,” said Amber, who added that she is grateful for the titanium hardware that holds her head in a forward position. “Without this, when I turned my neck, it dislocated certain joints, causing me to not be able to breathe.” Following her second shunt surgery, done by a specialist in Maryland, Amber began to feel well enough to engage in more daily living activities, although she still cannot drive and she tires easily. Amber is looking forward to being able to get out on the bike.
“It’s giving me another way to exercise,” she said. “With all the hardware, I lost everything but walking.” Before the onset of the Chiari symptoms, Amber liked to do aerobics and interval training. “That would all be too high impact for me now,” she said. “With high pressure, you can’t jump up and down.” Amber is also thankful to Erica, AMBUCS, and others who have gone the extra mile for her. “I am not an inside-the-box patient,” said Amber, “(but) people who have invested in me and walked with me are why I can still be a mom.” Amber’s mother, Pam Jaskierski, added that she is especially grateful for those who have been willing to step into Amber’s life. “(The specialist) who helped her was a godsend because he listened, and he fixed it,” said Pam. “Otherwise we would not be here.” Lititz AMBUCS is a local member of a national charitable service organization. The organization holds annual fundraisers in Lititz Springs Park. Readers who want to know more about the organization may visit https://lititzambucs.com or email Ambucs@ptd.net.

If asked whether they would be happy in a world without insects, some people might answer in the affirmative. However, such a scenario would be disastrous for Earth and its inhabitants, entomologists have said. “Insects are integral to the health of the planet and people,” explained Michael Skvarla, director of the Insect Identification Laboratory at Penn State University (PSU). “They pollinate our crops and feed on pests, help decompose dead animals, form the base of food webs, and stabilize natural environments.” PSU Department of Entomology graduate students Brooke Lawrence and Ginamaria Roman Echevarria will offer a perspective on the worldwide decline of insects in their keynote presentation, “A World of Insects: The Good, the Bad, and the Changes,” at the Penn State Extension Lancaster County annual meeting and social event at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. KDC: Cooperative Solutions has been offered an opportunity to share office space with one of its founding member nonprofit organizations in its new office space in Harrisburg. Pennsylvania Association Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), just relocated to 1007 N. Front St., Suite 3S, Harrisburg. The space includes one large private office, a shared kitchen and three bathrooms, shared use of a conference room and plenty of parking spaces on the riverfront property. In conversations preceding the move, KDC executive director Peggy Fogarty and PASA executive director Hannah SmithBrubaker explored multiple ways the KDC and PASA could find efficiencies by working together more intentionally. SmithBrubaker served as KDC’s board president in 2015-16. KDC plans to host its board meetings at the new space and have more in-person time with its members, board members, and other partners. KDC can start moving Saturday, Feb. 1, and plans to be fully out of the Ephrata office by Sunday, March 1. KDC’s mailing address will remain 108F N. Reading Road, Suite 200, Ephrata, for now.

New Holland. The event is sponsored by the Winter Field Day Association. The RRRA will have three stations set up, and licensed operators may use the equipment to contact other operators. Additionally, as part of its goal to welcome newcomers, several seminars will be offered during the event, and interested individuals may learn about safety and technical skills such as how to cut out interfering signals. Events like the Winter Field Day enable amateur radio operators to make connections without the pressure of a stressful situation. Being able to legally and comfortably operate a ham radio can open doors to friendship, an enjoyable hobby, and public service, Boone said, adding that ham radios can operate in areas where cellphones cannot. The RRRA used to drill for Three Mile Island emergencies and still practices in case of an incident at the nuclear power plant in Peach Bottom. Two seconds after the first bomb was detonated at the Boston Marathon in 2013, the cellphone towers in a 20-mile radius were shut down. A network for 200 ham radio operators established communication between all the race checkpoints and the hospital. reports,” Boone remarked. “The next thing you know, you’re talking to a guy in Israel on 5 watts.” “That’s like walkie-talkie energy,” explained RRRA board member Doug Rice of Lancaster. “Most (easily accessible) radios are 100 watts.” Radio broadcasting is licensed by the FCC, and that includes amateur radio operators as well. “If somebody would like to get a license, we would like to help them,” said RRRA vice president Leon Hess of East Earl. Although the RRRA does not offer exam preparation, it does assist in offering the tests, and it will refer people to training classes in the region. The RRRA has many opportunities for those who become licensed. “For the exam, you use sponge memory. We don’t want to lose those people who get wrung out for the test,” Rice commented. “About half take the exam but never use it. When you start using the skills … (your knowledge) becomes more meaningful.” “It’s like getting your driver’s license and never using it,” Boone added. The RRRA leaders hope that newly licensed or inexperienced operators, as well as anyone with an interest in amateur radio, will participate in the Winter Field Day, which will be held from 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Welsh Mountain Community Center, 564 Sandmine Road,

A First Friday reception for “From Scribbles to More Refined Scribbles - A Journey of a Literal Lifetime,” an art exhibit featuring the work of Lancaster native Jenni Buffington, will be held at the Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will include time to meet the artist, live music and food. During a stay at her mother’s house after an illness, the artist discovered that her mother had held on to every piece of artwork Buffington had ever created, which developed into the idea to hold a concept show. The upcoming exhibit will showcase Buffington’s progression as an artist. The reception will feature live music by Stephen Diehl, another Lancaster native, who will perform original acoustic melodies. Spot Matmen Topple Barons, Improve to 7-0 by Ara Grigorian
In a crucial battle with Section Two rival Manheim Central, the Spartans strengthened their hold on the top spot in the Section Two standings with a 52-18 victory at Central on Wednesday night. The win improved the Spartans’ record to 6-0 (7-0 overall) in the league while the Barons fell to 4-1. The Barons’ inability to fill the 138and 152-pound weight classes resulted in 12 uncontested points for the Garden Spot grapplers and a 12-3 lead, which soon became 18-3 on Drew Finkey’s pin at the 160pound bout.
Two straight decisions went in Garden Spot’s favor - Ethan Eberly (6-3 at 170) and Alan Perez, who won 7-5 in overtime at the 182-pound class. The next four bouts belonged to Garden Spot, including a 195-pound pin with only two seconds before the second-period buzzer, registered by Mason Musser. Dustin Swanson (220), Charles Martin (285) and Adam Hahn (106) pinned each of their opponents for a 48-3 lead. A pair of pins by Central wrestlers sandwiched around Jeremy Schilling’s 7-4 setback at 120 made it 48-18 before Mason Casey majored Uriah Warner for the winning margin of 52-18.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Spartans faced a tough undefeated Columbia squad in a Lancaster-Lebanon League boys’ basketball game on Tuesday night. The Crimson Tide came away with a 56-49 overtime victory, improving to 6-0 in the league and 10-0 overall. The Spartans outscored the home team 27-22 in the second half, forcing overtime. The Tide held Garden Spot (5-9, 3-4 league) to one point in the extra period. In this overtime contest, each team featured three players who finished in double digits for points. Cory Ream, 6foot-4 sophomore, Brendan Weaver, a 5-foot-10 freshman, and Jahvar Ham-
mond each scored 10 for the Spartans with Ream making a pair of threepoint field goals. Andrew Zentner finished with eight points. The Tide trio to tally 10 or more included Kerry Glover (15), Ryan Hinkle (15) and Michael Poole (13). In Saturday’s non-league home game against Wyomissing, the Garden Spot Spartans found themselves chasing the competition. The Wyomissing Spartans held the home team to single digits in the second and third quarters in a 43-36 victory. Brady Conroy had a team high 12 for Garden Spot, scoring all of his points on the four treys. Zentner had 11 and Jesse Martin scored eight. Darren Brunner led Wyomissing with 13 points.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Three days following their heartbreaking 41-39 loss at Muhlenberg on Saturday, January 11, the Spartans were home, facing Columbia in girls’ basketball action. The Tide were never able to climb out of a 12-4 hole in the first quarter. Despite a push before halftime, closing the gap to 20-16, the Tide turned the momentum over to the home team as Spot went on to win 49-39. The win improved the Spartans’ record to 4-11. Olivia Usner was a solo wrecking crew scoring 35 points to turn away the Tide. She dropped in five threepoint baskets and was a perfect 4-for4 at the foul line.
