Both Carl Edwards, youth center director with CrossNet Ministries,
and assistant youth center director Shanice Smith-Starr agree that one of the best reasons to take area high school students to Camp Orchard
Hill each year for Winter Blast is that the retreat gives students and staff a chance to build relationships. “That is why students continue to
pester Shanice and me about when registration is starting,” shared Edwards. “They have been asking for weeks.” See Winter Blast pg 7

Grandons Receive Recognition UPMC Pinnacle’s youngest patients - new borns - were recently dressed in holiday stockings and knit caps. Nurses arranged babies in the newborn nursery in the new maternity unit at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg for a photo op and visit with Santa. Since 1992, the Pinnacle Health Auxiliary volunteers have sewn stockings that are given to babies born at UPMC Pinnacle hospitals during the holiday season. This year, more than 140 stockings were delivered to UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg, Lititz, and Memorial maternity units and were to be shared with
mothers giving birth the last two weeks in December. James Grandon, chair of the Pinnacle Health Foundation board, and his wife, Jean, joined the festive gathering and were recognized for their donation to the Pinnacle Health Foundation’s Labor of Love Campaign. The Pinnacle Health Foundation launched a $10 million fundraising campaign, called Labor of Love, for its new Women and Babies Center in Hollinger Tower at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg. The Grandons’ contribution supported the construction of the newborn nursery in the
new maternity unit that opened for patients on Dec. 17. The full Women and Babies Center in Hollinger Tower is slated to be completed in spring 2019 and will include a 42 private-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). To view a video of Santa visiting the babies, readers may visit www.pinnaclehealth.org/news feed/video-home/video/7293.

The 2019 Winter Blast will be held Friday, March 8, through Sunday, March 10. The weekend, which is specifically designed for students from urban youth centers, will bring together more than
200 students and will feature a Christian hip-hop artist and speaker Josh Ott, a Schuylkill County pastor. In addition to four sessions with Ott, the students will have the chance to enjoy activities such as sledding, snow football, an indoor climbing wall, inflatables, hockey, and bubble ball. The theme for this year’s Winter Blast is “The Greatest,” based on

I Corinthians 13:13, which reads, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” According to Smith-Starr, the sessions with Ott can be powerful experiences for the students. “Usually that last session … includes the Gospel (message of salvation),” said Smith-Starr. Last year, three CrossNet students accepted the Lord during Winter Blast. “(These sessions have) been a blessing, especially as the students hear teachings and worship,” Smith-Starr added. “They are exposed to the Gospel during that time, so they are connecting with their peers and hearing God’s Word.” Edwards noted that the atmosphere at the event helps students feel comfortable. “We appreciate that Camp Orchard Hill creates a weekend for our students,” said Edwards. “(Camp Orchard Hill staff members) allow students to be who they are without a sense of judgment. They preach the Gospel (because) they want to see students come to Jesus, so they make sure the students are safe and cared for and that it’s a different (experience) than going to a church.” When students who make a decision for Christ during the retreat return to New Holland, CrossNet staff members take steps to help disciple them. “We are thankful those (young people) made those decisions,” explained Smith-Starr. “We try to be intentional with them when they come back from that weekend.” Because Camp Orchard Hill staff members plan and organize the retreat, Edwards and Smith-Starr have the opportunity to focus on the students they have brought. “We get to be leaders. We get to be fully invested,” said Edwards. “We get to be with our students to learn together and grow together. It’s so great.” This will be the 10th year that the center has taken a group to Winter Blast. Each year, the CrossNet youth center staff members endeavor to take 35 to 40 students on the trip. The total cost to send one student to the event is $150, and CrossNet is seeking scholarships to help fund the trip. “Anyone can sponsor a student,” noted Edwards. “Churches can come together to take a group.” Each sponsorship covers travel, food, lodging, and camp fees. Sponsors will receive ways to pray for the student prior to the trip. After the trip, sponsors will receive a group photo and a thank-you note from the student. Spartans Top Columbia, Zentner Scores 19 by Ara Grigorian
The Garden Spot Spartans turned away the Columbia Crimson Tide in a non-league boys’ basketball game at New Holland on Tuesday, posting a 70-44 win. The quick start was something head coach Nate Musselman and his coaching staff were trying to instill in the days leading up to this game. “The week before this, we struggled for whatever reason, in the first quarters of our games,” Musselman explained. “We hadn’t done that earlier in the season. “We changed some things up and our kids jumped out with 19 points in the first quarter,” he added. Garden Spot (8-6) carried a commanding 19-6 lead into the second quarter. The Spartans outscored the Tide by only a single point in that second stanza, making it 32-18 at halftime. However, a 25-6 run in the third quarter put this game out of reach. Andrew Zentner scored a gamehigh 19 points. The 6-foot-7 Spartan junior made one three-pointer and
was a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line. “Andrew was a sophomore last year on a very senior-oriented team,” explained Musselman. “A lot of the scoring came from the senior guards. “However, Andrew played his role and with that team playing in leagues and districts,” added the coach. “He earned great experience as a sophomore. He contributes a lot on the floor.” The team does have a handful of seniors on this year’s roster as well. Musselman gave credit to those upperclassmen. “Our seniors, and the leadership they bring has helped instill what we are preaching,” he said. “It spreads like wildfire through our team.” Keontae Nunn, who is one of those seniors, added 11 points, drilling a pair of treys in the process. Joseph Sharp poured in nine points while Jon Morales and John Dykie scored eight and seven points, respectively. Matt McCleary and Michael Poole each scored 10 points for Columbia. WRESTLING It was certainly going to be a battle with an arch rival as the Barons and the Spartans met on the mats at
Manheim Central for a Section Two wrestling match on Wednesday. The Spartans came in with a 4-1 record, trailing the Barons whose 4-0 record had them tied for first with Lampeter-Strasburg. And the match was as close as anticipated with Central leading by only six points heading into the final three bouts. That was where Dakota Thomas, Will Betancourt, and Cade Zeamer earned 12 points and a major decision to propel the home team to a 47-25 victory. Thomas notched a pin for the Barons at 126. Betancourt turned in a major at 132 followed by Zeamer’s first-period pin at 138. Earlier in the match, the pins and decisions helped the Spartans put together a comeback. Alan Perez won the opening bout, earning a 21-14 decision over Central foe Conner Zeamer at 145. After a Logan Hess pin at 152 put Central up 6-3, Clay Bedi earned a close 5-3 decision over Spot’s Drew Finkey at 160. The Barons earned 10 more points to go up 19-3, followed by Keegan McCord’s pin at 195.

Dustin Swanson started the comeback with a pin at 220, which was offset by a Central pin at 285. Jeremy Schilling earned six points (106) via forfeit followed by Mason Casey’s (113) major decision and Garrett Gehr’s pin at 120, closing the gap to 31-25. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL While the boys’ hoops team was putting up 19 points against Columbia in New Holland, the girls’ team was busy pouring in 21 first-period points en route to a 66-42 non-league road win on Tuesday. The win improved the Spartans’ record to 5-10 on the year. Megan Fisher had a tremendous game, scoring 30 points to lead all scorers. The 12 baskets she put up included a pair of three-pointers. She also was a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line. Paige Kemper went 8-for-9 at the foul line and finished with 17 points on the night. Lauryn Ashcroft and Erin Gonzalez each added five points. Janeah Neal scored a team-high 18 for the Crimson Tide. Columbia’s record fell to 6-8. Taking the 21-10 lead into the
second quarter, the Spartans increased their advantage to 31-17 by halftime. They outscored the home team 34-25 in the second half as they continued to dominate. BOWLING Palmyra Lanes was the site of a Section Three clash between Northern Lebanon and Garden Spot on Tuesday afternoon. The Spartans came in as the second-place team in the section. Despite a strong 622 by Trevor Courtney, they were unable to stop the Vikings, who claimed a 7-0 victory. Northern Lebanon was led by Bryce Lentz, who bowled a 230 in
his first game and a 234 in his second, eventually finishing with 676. Aliza Shirk had a 269 in the third game of the afternoon, tallying 643 on the day. Courtney’s top game was his third, where he registered a 225. The Spartans, whose 37-12 league record has them in second place in the section, were coming off a 7-0 defeat of Elco at Dutch Lanes the previous week. Courtney was crushing the pins at a count of 726 on that day. He peaked with a 268 in his second game, sandwiched by scores of 234 and 224.

Historical Society Slates Music Night The annual Music Night organized by the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society is slated to take place on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. This year’s Music Night will continue the tradition of involving a variety of Mennonite groups and individuals. Aspire Chamber Choir, composed of Anabaptist singers from
Lancaster and Lebanon, seeks to glorify God through choral singing and share the beauty of God’s creation of music. Having received a rich musical heritage, the group performs classic and contemporary choral works. The group is organized by the wellknown Kravets family and directed by Lee Weaver. Sopa Sol, consisting of singersongwriters Daryl Snider and
Frances Crowhill Miller, will also perform. Both Snider and Miller view their music as more than entertainment and draw on their experiences in other countries and cultures to explore transformative music. Joshua Good and Rosemary Eberly Lebold will perform a collection of classical, theatrical, and gospel selections. Good studied vocal performance at Liberty University and has performed semiprofessionally in both opera and musical theater. He has performed as a soloist for choirs including the Mennonite Choral Singers, the Altar of Praise Chorale, and the Lancaster Meistersingers. Lebold, a soprano, graduated from West
Swope Harvests Buck
Chester University with a bachelor’s degree in music in vocal performance. Merle Good will lead congregational singing. Tickets may be purchased by visiting www.lmhs.org or by calling 717-393-9745. Admission is free for children under age 12. The event is a fundraiser for Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society. Proceeds will support the organization’s services, including public programs, a library and archives, publications, online services, and ministries of engaging the past as an insight into the present and future. The annual Music Night is one of more than 40 Lancaster Roots 2019 events.

The Milk Duds 4-H Dairy Club will hold its reorganizational meeting on Monday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Club activities include taking part in dairy judging practices and competitions, fitting and showing workshops, the county show, and other events, and each meeting has a different topic related to the dairy industry. Items attendees should bring to this meeting are a pen or pencil, a 2019 calendar and the completed enrollment form with parent signatures. This meeting is important for both new and returning club members and their parents, so those who cannot attend the meeting are asked to turn in their enrollment form to the Extension office prior to the meeting date. Readers may contact Amanda Arrowsmith, club leader, at 717-548-2664 or a194arrow smith@epix.net for additional information.
Through the Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (AAAOK), campers ages 13 to 21 have the chance to take part in community service projects such as running an Alex’s Lemonade Stand, playing bingo at Pleasant View Retirement Community and Danner Home, and having a car wash to raise funds to donate to a local nonprofit selected by the campers. Optional programs for parents are also offered during camp, ranging from guest speakers to pampering days with manicures, pedicures, and massages. Aaron’s Acres has hosted its summer camp in Manheim since 2013. It merged its Dauphin County camp site with Manheim in 2017 and its Berks County site in 2018. Transportation to camp from Dauphin and Berks counties is available. Aaron’s Acres is currently in the process of looking for a property or space to purchase as a permanent centralized facility for its offices, summer camp, and year-round programming.

people who want hands-on experience, and they’re always supervised by professionals.” Unpaid positions are also open to high school students age 14 and up who would like to volunteer as buddies at camp. Buddies act as positive role models for campers under the supervision of the group leader. Activities at camp include swimming every day, music therapy, therapeutic horseback riding, arts and crafts, group games, and sports. “The staff give 200 percent, and they always say they feel like they learn more than they feel the campers do,” Paskoff stated. “They are really energetic, passionate people who will do whatever it takes to make (camp) an exceptional experience.” “We take every moment, and even though you think of it as just camp, we’re working on socialization and other skills at all times,” added Paskoff. Special activities, theme days, and community service are other significant aspects of camp.

The first session will run from Monday, June 17, to Friday, June 28, and session two will be held on Monday, July 8, to Friday, July 19, both with options of half-day hours from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and full-day hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A third session scheduled for Monday, July 22, to Friday, Aug. 2, will offer half-day hours only. “That third session is usually made up of new families who want to try it out for the first time,” noted Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. Interested individuals may register at www.aaronsacres.org by Sunday, March 31. Scholarships are available. New families will be scheduled for a face-toface meeting in order for everyone to get acquainted and for staff to become familiar with the camper’s strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities. Having professional staff, including special education teachers and a nurse, as well as a 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 staff-to-child ratio, enables Aaron’s Acres to accept any child, regardless of medical or behavioral challenges. “Having that individualized attention makes for a great relationship and experience for the child,” Paskoff stated. Counselors are needed, and interested individuals age 18 and over may apply at www.aaronsacres.org by March 31. Paskoff noted that serving at Aaron’s Acres summer camp is great for undergraduate and graduate students studying subjects such as social work, special education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, but the organization is also thrilled to have anyone with a heart for the campers. “We love when people without those majors do it and get comfortable interacting with our campers,” added Paskoff. “It’s great hands-on experience for
